For as much credit as he gives Mint, he doesn’t think this plan is working. It doesn’t seem like anything they throw at this guy is going to get him to move. He swallows down his wince at seeing Petra lifted and slammed into magma like some WWE move-- but that, and the magma, become secondary to the flooding water and the shadow of Primal Kyogre in the sky.

He recalls Petra-- the pieces of her, really, because that’s all that’s left, and he barely has time to be thankful that her fragments go back in the Pokeball before the Zamazenta’s attack looms over him; he half-dives, half is tugged into the gripping undertow, and the behemoth bash creates a tidal wave, buoying him up and away from the fight. His back hits something hard, and he hears the sound of glass breaking underwater.

Raph bounces like a pinball, off office furniture and through pressboard walls, as the initial wave sinks away and leaves him gasping like a fish on cheap tile flooring. He has the wherewithal to summon his Serperior-- not a Water-type, but not so distantly related so as to be useless, here, either-- who wraps a strong tail around him as they prepare for the next wave.

Raging heat and boiling magma. Steam hissing through new cracks in the earth; Petra’s earthquake, seized and grown and built upon. Superheated rocks flash red and shatter.

He has no say in this war. He’s here because ’s here. But hearing over the rise and scream of the spewing magma makes him bark a laugh.

Innocent families might be suffering, but he didn’t really believe the League gave a shit about them, until they were numbers on a bottom line. The dregs, like him, tossed aside and forgotten, until people like and and and and all the rest of ‘em could wrap their disembodied souls around raised fists like a war banner. Fodder under the wheel, to grease the way, to make the going easier. Blood on a soiled flag, useful only as currency for the flame.

Petra takes the hydro cannon like a good shield, defending Raph and at the expense of a few chunks of her round body, before the water streams are drawn in by Gnocchi’s decoy.

Raph’s first instinct is to dive into the fight, but just as he’s about to put his shoulder down and do that-- likely to charge face-first into his death-- the blue-haired shadow at the edge of his vision solidifies. Something like a familiar touch pulls against his clothes, his skin, and in a blink he’s being lifted, up and away from , and he scrambles to call Petra’s name. A few traces of molten rock sluice down the Golem’s body, dark veins of space burning red hot as she hotfoots it out of the way.

He floats above the battlefield, unsure of direction, directive, for the briefest of moments. Hadn’t they jumped in to defend ? And now they were just… leaving her? Letting her disappear in the forest of magma plumes?

But Mint is saying change targets, so he’s going to change targets. He ain’t here to get caught up in thinking. He’s here to follow orders and be a good soldier.

Mint’s asking him and question and Raph wishes to god he had a cigarette. All he sees, he wants to say, is one big fucking dog with a big fucking shield. But what comes out is, “Let’s test that theory out. Petra!”

His Golem roars, couches her head, and charges, aiming to bulldoze on the spot.

Mint’s promise to dispel the strange phantoms haunting Raph as a result of being embedded with many of his preternatural feathers had not gone unfulfilled-- but so, too, had he professed his inexperience in the act. So Raph had nothing to compare them to, but there they were, little neon-blue flashes at the corners of his vision, like he could look at them fully if he turned quick enough.

He didn’t so much mind. He thought about Mint most of the time, anyway, and their hushed whispers promising Raph it’s all an act, he doesn’t really care about you might as well be his own damn thoughts. Ain’t like he hadn’t thunk 'em before.

The demons who would be gods began to whisper to men from their tombs within the earth.

“I’m fine,” he says, speaking over the quiet murmur of the ghost-mind haunting his peripherals, “are you?”

It’s not enough. He wants to hold him, to press fingers over his bruises, make sure nothing’s broken, to bundle him up and draw him a bath and feed him something, and tuck him into bed if he hurts, and fuck him good if he doesn’t. But he can’t do any of that now and he knows it, so he settles for raised eyebrows and a cigarette.

Raph was no stranger to slapdash attempts at healing. Heavier on his mind were the strange events of their last fight, and the changes in Mint’s burgeoning abilities. He knew they’d have to talk about them, and, hopefully, soon-- just not right this second.

Mint summons him to fight with a rhetorical question.
[break][break]
“Last round barely had me sweatin’,” he answers, exhaling smoke in even measure.

Raph does a good job of pretendin’, but he didn’t quite grasp the true weight of what he was stepping into. Mint having a god’s power was one thing-- but here, now, everywhere he looked, every direction he turned, every fucker and their brother had a goddamn god as a pet, and he had in his mind the funniest vision of a toddler finding the gun in their dad’s sock drawer and waving it around. That’s what it felt like, surrounded by Lugias and funky-colored Moltreses and whatever the hell that weird saber-toothed ferret thing was.

Mint steps into the fray and starts holding back magma with the power of his goddamn mind. This shit is insane.

The overwhelming moment, one lub-dub-lub of heartbeats, passes. Raph slides down the small slope to stand next to . His Golem is summoned, and she stomps her feet, summoning an earthquake beneath the feet of the Leaguers.

She had images of some grotesque, string-covered eggsac. Not cute, wriggling little larvae sheltered neatly in organized combs, like her own species.

No. We collect nectar and pollen from the flowers, then take it home to our hive, for our queen. Or, at least, I used to. It’s… just me, now. No hive.

Raphael was many things, but Miel didn't think she'd go so far as to call him a queen.

[attr="class","rapha"]While Raph was off to war, he’d left a bunch of his younger Pokemon at various daycares. It was important they get stronger if he was going to help … or, at the very least, keep up with him.

Miel buzzed through the Pecha trees, doing loops through the sweet-smelling foliage. As she flew, she saw the little Scatterbug, munching on a leaf.

Miel pulled a face-- three faces, actually, but-- as if to say, you EAT that junk?

(She was also here to consume the Pecha trees, though not the leaves, but the vibrant, pink blooms.)

He holds Lam through his thrashing, through his screaming, and in doing so, gets a firshand view of what happens. Of a sort. He’s not in Lam’s mind, obviously, but he sees. He watches his face go dead slack, eyes fogged, aura peeling off his skin; then, he blinks, the physical version of a record scratch, and his voice changes.

Mint had… done something to him. Changed him, somehow.

His memory? His recollection of the last several minutes?

Oh, god.

His last requests for freedom culminate with Mint’s order to let him go, so Raph does. He steps back, sloshing through water up over his boots, now.

He was so caught up in his swirling thoughts he didn’t notice Virizion, who would have body checked him out of the way if it weren’t for the fact that he took 83 pounds of sopping-wet, injured Fearow to the face first. Halcyon battered him badly about the head and body, screaming the entire time, voicing her grievances and her anger and her pain. Whatever loud boom Mint heard was muffled by the screeches and beak-clacks of his own angry bird. Raph spat brown feathers and stumbled to the side. When she was done, she fell to the sand, hissing like an angry swan, one wing dangling loosely, bleeding from several punctures.

Lam was gone.

The ocean was rolling in quicker, now, and the water was getting higher. Kiri’s dead bones had slipped away, never to be seen again. There was pain in his heart, but Raph ignored it, for now. There would be time to mourn later. Hopefully.

Who said Mint was the only one who could compartmentalize.

He recalled Halcyon to save her further pain. His long, beleaguered exhale was stolen by the wind.

He squared his jaw and looked up at Mint. His clothes were ripped and drenched in blood. A steady drip of it peeled from his wounds and plopped to the wet, foamy tide below.

He had questions. He was concerned. He wanted to talk about it. He wanted to kiss him and tell him it would be all right. But that was a sort of mourning, too, and so too, there would be time for that later.

He patted for his smokes with his uninjured arm.

The wind screams so sharply it opens stinging lines across his cheeks, the pitch of the pain in harmony with the rise of Mint’s voice.

Raph had spent a lot of his youth in houses of worship. He had a lot of experience in the art. But despite the time-- years, probably-- he had always had a space in his heart between what was true and what was a story, like all along, he’d had this bottom-line understanding that he, and the rest of them, were slightly superstitious idiots.
[break][break]
Now he considered for the first time there had been deeper meaning, all along.
[break][break]
He watches ’s transformation now and his own existence diminishes to insignificance. Merely human. Nothing.
[break][break]
You’re nothing but human.
[break][break]
This is not his place. Or, maybe, moreso, it is. The mortal vestige. The shadow at the holy feet.
[break][break]
He did not go to his knees for all of the weather god’s angry winds.
[break][break]
He does now.
[break][break]
He does not hear the mysterious voice that speaks to Mint. Those words are not for his ears. But he’s so caught up in the awe-struck beauty of it that there’s nothing to do when the feathers shift and turn, and everything goes pear-shaped in a second.

Shunk, shunk, shunk. Serrated daggers slamming the ground, in a staccato line. Halcyon’s feather, adrift in the windstorm, gets sliced in half. Then there’s a different sort of noise, a punched-out wet sound, and Raph barely feels the pain, his hand going to cup around the shaft of the feather buried in his abdomen. At the same moment, Halcyon shrieks, flails, splatters blood down across the ground, over Lam’s face, over Mint’s face.

Raph can’t take his eyes off of Mint. A feather that would have struck him between the eyes sails over his head and hits Kiri, directly in the center of the purple diamond on her forehead. She staggers back in the air, arms outstretched; the golden light goes from her eyes, and she crumples, turned to snow-dry, white bone. She sounds like a windchime hitting the ground.

Mint’s order is strained and bitten off, but Raph is nothing but a good soldier. He has a job and he’s going to do it. He braces into his right leg and stands, blood streaming from the puncture in his abdomen where he holds the feather like the handle of a cranking wheel. He lurches towards Lam, and it’s only in the way his body is sluggish and he has to really haul that he realizes there’s more than one feather. There’s one in his left shoulder and another in his right thigh and one in his right forearm.

There’s no pain he feels-- there’s nothing, really, except the task at hand. This is what he was made for: the damage sink, the tool, the shield.
[break][break]
His knees hit the dirt and he wrestles with Lam to pull him up and hold him. That’s what Mint told him to do so that’s what’s going to get done, goddamnit. He’s so focused on it that he doesn’t notice the taste of blood in his mouth. Down but not out.
[break][break]Something sweeps against the ground behind him, Halcyon dragging one bum wing, brown feathers stained with red. [break][break]Down, but not out.

Flashing yellow-green light slices through the whirling air like a cursed beacon.

Halcyon knows the attack is coming. She and Artichoke continue the dance, like two birds of prey with talons locked, spiraling wildly out of control.
[break][break]
Contrary to popular belief, flight was extremely difficult. The muscles contributing to flight were many, varied, and hard to control; almost every flight-feather grew into bone. Hovering was a particular skillset not beholden to creatures like Fearow and Decidueye-- they were too big, their shoulderset too broad, their wings not finite enough. Fast, quick aerial movements, in the same vein, were easier to do with momentum behind them. Reversing was a similar task.

There is little she can do to get out of the way. Shifting her bodyweight to backflap would take too long, be too tedious. Dodging to the side would sacrifice the majority of one of her wings.
[break][break]
And so she couches, and dives, and the solar blade burns hot up along the side of her keel, carves a niche out of her flesh, and sears off her outermost primaries, scalding her right wing from feather to skin.
[break][break]
Don’t tell Raph that he was part of the reason Mint took a duck to the face. He might end his life then and there.
[break][break]
He loses Mint in the maelstrom, heart going into his throat, sitting there and choking him; but even amidst the panic, Raph is a professional, and he stays focused on the target, having to trust that Mint is a big boy and can take care of himself.
[break][break]
He has to trust him. He has to. They’ve done this fucking song and dance so many times-- don’t worry about me, Raph, I can take care of myself, you don’t need to be concerned. It would be fucking awful for it to not be the truth, suddenly, right now.
[break][break]
Icy water drenches him and sticks his soaked shirt to his skin. His sunglasses stay on by the grace of his oft-broken nose bridge. Howling wind slices against his skin and steals the breath from his lungs. Still he couches his shoulder into the wind and pushes forward.
[break][break]
Mint’s voice breaks over the comms, staticky and distant-sounding (because his mouthpiece’s been smashed, but Raph doesn’t know that, yet) but alive, and Raph doesn’t let his body sag in relief. He’s forcing himself through a screaming wall of wind and then he’s into a break in the storm, a moment of pure silence at the eye of it, and he gets a first-hand view of the moment between Lam and Mint, with Mint’s bare face poorly hidden behind fractured black glass, like a partially completed puzzle left abandoned, and the pure, unsheltered hurt that breaks just as unevenly over Lam’s face.

He feels like an intruder, like an unwelcome third. Like he stumbled through a door that should have been locked. Any other time and place he may have muttered his excuses and walked away-- but that wasn’t an option, here. His first true instinct is to step in, bundle Mint up, and take him away from the hurt-- equally as impossible.

“He told you to walk away,” is what he says, voice rough through windburnt lips, his Froslass hovering behind him, Halcyon’s shadow passing overhead.

thread summary: Raph hasn't heard from Mint for a while. Like, nothing. Not a peep. Fearing he's been ghosted, he goes to Mint's apartment to get a proof of life or break it off officially, for good, and discovers the problem is something else entirely.[break]

why is it important?: Kimmy managed to trigger two and a half of my trapcards in one single thread.

I on draw a lot of religious references-- fiction or otherwise-- for Raph. His name, first and foremost: (though he is also named after my favorite ninja turtle) Raphael the archangel, who guarded the gates of Eden with his flaming sword (fucking listen, crowley was raphael, no i am not taking criticism on this) who slew the principal demon Asmodeus, who cast the false angel Azazel from heaven (don't get me started on this one) etc etc etc. None of that is really important in the long run but RAPHAEL IS THE ANGEL OF HEALING. He is the angel of medicine. And that's what he's kind of been, specifically for Mint-- more of, like, the angel of selfcare, but-- and it's magnified tenfold in this thread.

Honestly the fact that Mint is an avatar now and has wings growing out of his body is, like, the least important thing in this thread, but I digress.

We tie back into angels, here, with Mint's seraph wings, and the second aspect of religion that I draw on for Raph in regards to Mint which is this idea of divine worship. Set counter to this is Mint's personal background with religion and his own views of his Avatarhood and how much he DETESTS the sort of religious idolization.

The core theme for their relationship, from Raph and my POV, has been you have brought sin to heaven and doom upon all the world, which is from Threnodies 8:5 of the Chant of Light, but I've kind of twisted the meaning. The literal context, in a nutshell, is 'humanity breaks into the throne of god and sullies it with their mortalness and in retaliation releases great sickness upon the world'. But for Raph, it means more that he wants to worship Mint like the god he feels he is but also wants him carnally, personally, like a human does; and the doom upon all the world is just Raph's eternal damnation of loving this man.

TRAP CARD NUMBER TWO IS BIRDS AND FEATHER CARE. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE birds. I was going to get my avian specialty but that's a lot of schoolwork. One of the most important things of having pet birds is feather care! So I got to teach Kimmy a bit about that, and how nutrition/stress plays a big part in healthy feather development, and then I got to let Raph be a little freak about birds, too.

Halcyon aimed her aerial ace for soft, downy breast feathers, where Artichoke would pluck himself bald to warm an egg, for the ardor of his heart was greatest here. She snakes her neck out long and draws on the fullest extent of her instincts, turning the extension into a repeated drill peck over fragile breastbone.

His coat whips and lashes around him, black wings for the shadow of the shadow of death, as he makes his way through his valley.

Raph squints through a cloud of purple, thankful for his sunglasses. The last thing he needs, he thinks, is to look confused. To mask his anxiety, he produces his lucky pack of smokes, taps one out, and lifts it to his lips.

seems to recognize moreso than at face value; when Raph is mentioned, he covers the flame of his lighter, trilling three fingers up in a paltry salute, before dropping his hands and exhaling a plume of smoke.

He swallows a laugh at duck out. Because, birds, right? Mint’s feathers, Lam’s Pokemon, Raph’s… everything. Dos plumas. Even his codename, calamus, is a reference to plumage. But he doesn’t think Mint would appreciate the chuckle.

He gets to watch Lam go through the seven stages of grief and confusion at seeing Mint’s transformation. It’s kind of relieving, to be on the other side of it, knowing he was there just a short course ago.

The Psyduck goes down and Lam covers her. Raph forces himself not to wince-- out of pity, mostly, because he’s been there, he’s had a deep muscle wound before, and they fucking hurt. He has little time to garner sympathy, though, because now the Decidueye is attacking him.

Kiri is pinned in place by those fuming, purple arrows; Raph steps back to her, wrapping broad hands around the arrow shafts, and tugging them out of the ground, palms burning with shadowy cold. The frenzy plant writhes towards them, hissing like a living being where vines caress each other, tendrils bursting up through the ground to wrap around Raph’s ankles.

“Spicy chicken,” he amends, wrenching free the last arrow as Kiri exhales frost breath across the frenzy plant, freezing it solid and letting herself and Raph snap free of fragile, frozen vines.

Things seem to unravel from there, as they usually do in the peak of battle. The Psyduck becomes a projectile with maximum prejudice. Mint’s order to stay back and slowly gain ground evaporates, the line crossed by . Raph bites back a cry of Mint’s name, instead putting that energy into hurling a Pokeball towards Lam’s Decidueye.

There’s only so much resistance in his body, though, because he can’t fight the pull that puts him on an intercepting course with , couching his shoulder and aiming to take the gym leader down at the hip.

Halcyon bursts free in a shrill cry of excitement, the war and chaos in her veins festering since her Spearow days breaking free with victorious rise. She flares her wings against the storm, then couches them and dives towards the Decidueye, aiming her aerial ace like a falling arrow.

• Froslass & Raph are hit by frenzy plant. Raph is also injured freeing Froslass from the spirit shackle. Froslass uses frost breath to counter the frenzy plant.[break]

• Raph runs sort as a reaction to Peaches' attack and ends up on a course to intercept Lam and like rugby tackle him. im stupid this should make more sense now
