Raph gives the order the barest of nods to show he’s heard and understands. If this is going to work-- all of it, all of them, not just this one fight-- Mint-- Neon-- has to trust him to be able to work in sync with him.

He faintly recognizes lam logan for his celebrity and his position in Hoenn, and not the person himself. Any realizations are cut short by the whistle of falling projectiles, purple slicing through the air. Raph swallows a curse as he and Kiri try to move out of the way. He manages to evade, but his Froslass is not so lucky, shadow stamped to the ground and run through with purple spikes.

He has sealed his love and affection, so sharply unspoken as to cut at his gums, as rings of teeth in the back of Mint's neck. He traces them with an index finger, making sure they don't bleed, relishing in the tiny shivers his touch elicits.

He did not miss the way Mint’s liturgy of wings fluttered and flared in beautiful concerto with their master’s pleasure, and he wants to kiss and worship every one. But for now, he settles for nosing against the nobs of Mint's spine, eyes closed, breathing in the fragrant incense of this holy altar, perfumed by their lovemaking, sweat and salt and Mint.

It takes every ounce of control in Raph’s body to not throw Mint on the bed.

He shadows the smaller man in and lays him down, kissing him all the while, until Mint’s back hits the sheets. Raph’s hands slide up a narrow spine, fingers flexing and shifting around sprouted wings, then back down again, soft, caressing touches--
[break][break]
--until they’re clear of the vestigial wings and, instead, moving with meaning, like he could somehow pull Mint apart and make his home in the new space between.
[break][break]
Raph wants to be gentle for Mint, but Mint does not want gentleness, and Raph aims to please. There are some things he knows in life, things important and precious enough to apply all his expertise to. He knows Mint’s body, knows its tells, knows when arched spine and rolled-back eyes mean its getting too much, too soon, too fast.
[break][break]
It’s perfect. It’s so far beyond perfection that it has to be something sinful. It’s so right, so good, and he almost loses himself to it, loses himself to Mint physically like he already has emotionally, spiritually.

When there’s no more space to fall, Raph lets himself fall, cascading over Mint’s back to press hungry kisses to the back of his neck, the space behind his ear, over each shoulderblade, anointing the fluttering pinions with breath and teeth and tongue, worshipful ministrations of awe and gentleness that sharply contradict the roughness of his very self.

“Impatient, are we?” his voice is more growl than anything resembling words; he lets Mint know he gets the joke with a bite to the inner thigh, tongue rolling over the hastily forming bruise, before he stands, guiding Mint’s legs to wrap around his waist.

Teeth pull at Mint’s neck as Raph carries him into the dark of the bedroom.

Raph squeezes the muscles of Mint’s thighs-- now he knows what they’re so strong, despite their delicate appearance-- and kisses him, breaking it only to follow the column of Mint’s neck, trail over his collarbones.

His hands span the small of Mint’s back. With deft, practiced fingers, he pulls down the waistband of Mint’s pajamas. Before Mint can lock his ankles, Raph hoists him, sinking down at the same time, so Mint’s legs are slung over his shoulders, back still pressed against the door, and Raph is on his knees in supplication.

It was important for Mint-- for them both, Raph was slowly beginning to realize-- to understand that Raph wasn’t here for a quick fuck. He hadn’t wanted Mint to get that idea, and, more importantly, he hadn’t wanted to hurt Mint, wanted to give him enough time for his body to grow-- however weirdly it was growing-- and heal.

But he’d also had a feeling that Mint wasn’t entirely comfortable in his new skin, and he’d had to rein himself in, regardless of how attractive he thought Mint always was.
[break][break]
He straightens his spine as Mint bends, and they’re nose to nose for a moment, for an hour, breath intermingling, hovering but not touching.
[break][break]
“Forever,” he says in answer, a quiet rumble and yet as loud as a thunderclap, as he seals their lips together and scoops Mint up with hands spread along the back of his thighs, to lift and turn and press him gently, yet firmly, back against the door to the outside world.

There was little Mint could do in error. Finding his blatant disregard for his own body, his own healing body, had made Raph angry; but so, too, had the knowledge that Mint was harvesting from himself all on his own.

Raph doesn’t want to infringe on his freedoms. First and foremost, he wants Mint to know he’s not an island. That, if he wants to draw his blood, there’s someone there to squeeze his hand to pump his pulse and make him cookies afterward.
[break][break]
Any questions come from a place of curiosity, not a place of judgment. To better know how he can help. To better know how he can be involved in Mint’s life.
[break][break]
He doesn’t want Mint to worry. He wants Mint to feel relief, knowing Raph is involved, knowing he isn’t alone.

Which meant he had to get stronger.
[break][break]
“Together.” It was as close to an admission he’d ever get, he felt.
[break][break]
Despite the significant circumstances, Raph can’t help the pride that worms through him, watching the color splay over Mint’s cheeks, down his neck. He hides his smile in the dip of Mint’s hipbone.

“I don’t want to go,” he said, words like a promise, thumbs tracing the soft flex of Mint’s abs as they moved beneath his skin. “I want to be here.” A pause, a press of his lips. “I want to see what your wings do when you’re happy.” He lets the growl in his voice emphasize the words. “I want you.”

Mint is warm beneath him. Raph slides his hands under the hem of Mint’s shirt, needing to feel the softness of his skin against the rough of his own palms. Soft, but strong, and taut, and pale as moonlight; beautiful and quick to bruise, like some particularly precious fruit.

“You don’t have to protect me.”
[break][break]
He says these things like a prayer, a mantra, an offering. A psalm, repeated. Though darkness closes, I am shielded by flame.

“I don’t want to be a weakness for you.”
[break][break]
His lips ghost across the fabric of Mint’s shirt, eyes fluttering closed for half a beat, breathing him in, subsumed in him.

“I want--,” --you. I want you-- “--to be a strength. I want us to be a strength.”

He flexes his fingers and lifts the hem of Mint’s shirt. Presses a soft kiss to the skin of his navel.

Mint moves into his space and Raph has to fight down another chuckle, because goddamn is he cute when he’s mad.

He reaches out when he feels its safe and takes Mint’s clenched fists-- so small, but so strong-- into his own. Trailing his thumb over ridges of knuckles and popping veins, he slowly rubs them out until they’re pliant enough to twine his own fingers through.

“An’ you have no idea how happy that makes me,” he said, tugging Mint close if he’s amenable, voice gone quiet with a sort of reverence, “I ain’t taking that for granted.”

This close, he could see the small twitches and shifts in Mint’s facial wings, the way they flex and move as though they were living, breathing structures.

“T’be honest, that was just the worst thing I could think of.”
[break][break]
Raph struggles to get oxygen into his lungs, swallows around the lump in his throat. He splays his hands alongside the small of Mint’s back and slowly, ever so slowly, goes down to his knees, chin coming to rest against Mint’s abdomen.

“I don’t care much for party loyalties,” he says, looking up at Mint with big, dark eyes, “but I would be loyal to you.”

True to form, Raphael’s survival instincts kick in a beat too late. His eyes go a little wide and a little glassy, mind flying back over his words like an old-school film spooler, except the wheel’s gone hinky and the film strip’s thrashing everywhere.

But he can’t. He honestly can’t find it. He doesn’t know what made Mint upset. He fights down the urge to hold up his hands in a show of innocence, keeps them-- somewhat firmly-- at his sides.

“Yes, that’s it,” he says, figuring now is not the time for jokes or bravado. They need to hash this out if they’ve any chance of being… whatever it is they are. “I mean, I get-- fuck, let me explain-- let me explain--,” he interjects pointedly over Mint’s anguish cry, “--I get why you keep it a secret and I get why it’s a big deal for you. It ain’t a small thing, and that’s not what I’m sayin’. I'm not tryin' to make you feel small. But I don’t think-- I care about you, mitten. A lot.” He let his arms go wide, then. “I wouldn’t-- I don’t-- there’s no secret in the world that would change that. Is all I mean.”

He runs a hand through his hair again. "I thought you were about to tell me you were dyin', or something," he added, as sort of an afterthought.

Mint seems to bristle, to flare and fade, in quick succession.

At first, when he spoke, Raph was about to turn on him. What do you mean, not yet? He wanted to ask. To demand. What else do I have to do to get you to let me in? But Mint keeps talking, and so all he does is sort of freeze half-turned, waiting, expectant.
[break][break]
“Bullshit. That’s jus' somethin’ you tell yourself to feel better about-- bein' distant.” There’s no venom to his words, and very little heat; simply acceptance, plain and simple, like he’s countering Mint’s admittance with fact. It is something Raph knows, knows down to the bottom of his heart. There’s no hurt, no harm, that he can’t take-- except, maybe, this.

Then Mint seems to really go through it. He looks like he’s about to scream, vomit, and pass out, all in quick succession. Raph takes a half-step towards him because he’s afraid the man’s gonna keel over; he has to stop himself from running to his side, and isn’t that a bitch? That deep-down built-in kicked-dog devotion that sends him to his knees with barely a look. And so now he’s looking at Mint with something worse than betrayal: concern.

But Mint stands on a precipice and Raph already feels bad for the part he’s played in pulling him there; he’s worried too much motion will overbalance him, one way or another, and either have him receding into the woods, again, or pitching right off the cliff.
[break][break]
There’s a part of him that relaxes, slightly, when Mint says not the League. Raph likes-- loves the guy, yeah, sure. He doesn’t particularly think he’d be able to feel the same way if Mint dropped the actually, I’m a cop bomb on him right then, especially given the many years worth of jailtime in illegal drugs currently scattered throughout Mint’s apartment.

After Mint’s done-- after it’s all out-- Raph lets his hackles down. He turns to face Mint fully. And he tries not to laugh. Not in a mean, belittling way, but out of some sick feeling of relief.

“That’s it? That’s-- that’s the big secret?” he shakes his head, runs a hand through his hair. “Okay. That’s real swell. What th’ fuck do they need yer blood for?”

Distant sounds of combat rumble like thunder, sound lifted and carried by the proximity to the sea. There’s a soft series of clicks and taps that Raph now recognizes as Mint touching base with his suit, his changed body-- so quiet you almost couldn’t hear it unless you knew to listen, unless you were looking.

He’s not wearing anything special, himself-- sunglasses and t-shirt and suitcoat. He doesn’t have any fancy tech and he’d almost insisted on forgoing the codename until he remembered Mint has a life outside of all this.

Mint had seemed a bit torn up about it all. It just went to show how vastly the chasm between them ways, how what they knew about each other could both fill an ocean and barely a thimble. Raph was born for this kind of shit, and he’d put people in the ground for lesser things than control of a city.

Maybe the difference was the distance between their egos-- Mint and Neon and the divisive line, whereas Raph was just, always, Raph.

He gets, what he expects, will be his one order, his one referencing acknowledgement.

He’s not here to be dead weight, after all, to be a weakspot, or a target. He’d kill himself before he allowed that to happen.

One day, he hopes, their bond will be a strength, and not a weakness. But that’s a long way off. It’s okay. They’ve got time. He’s here to help Mint-- Neon-- and to stop himself sitting at home being terrified he’ll never see him again. Raph may have been an errant worshipper before, but he has a new god, now. A god whose altar was built on bloodied bathroom tile in a bed of shed baby feathers.

What bizarre happenstance. His life was a weird one, for sure.

Punching waves of pink rippled through the gray, damp air. Raph resisted the urge to step up, step forward, take the hit for the team-- any team, really, but moreso because it was Mint-- and instead, summoned Kiri forward with a flick of his wrist. The Froslass fired off shards of ice through the psyshock in an attempt to break it up and disperse it, hopefully weakened after such a distance to travel.

He just needs a break. A breather, to put this in perspective. To dull the ache of seeing the needle in Mint’s arm. To stop the wild circles his brain is turning trying to wonder what, or who, he’s doing it for.

“I don’t hate you, mitten. I couldn’t. It’d be easier if I could.” He pauses on the threshold, door still shut, hand mid-reach for the knob. “I jus’... I dunno. Thought you’d trust me, by now.”

That’s one way to put it. Raph tried to school his errant heart, chastise it back into place like the sisters and their willow switches did to him so long ago. Just as then, it didn’t work now.

He should have stopped fooling himself, should have known that, eventually, something would have to give, and he’d cross the line of this little dance he was doing with Mint. This give and take of wanting more, wanting something concrete, tactile, and acting like he didn’t.

He was a good pretender but, eventually, you ran out of room to run.

“You don’t have to apologize. It’s… your life and you can do what you want.”

“I don’t--,” he reaches out, like he could take Mint in his palm, cup him there, carry him next to his heart and keep him safe. But he never could, could he? So he flares his hand and pats at his ass pockets, trying to find his smokes. “--I don’t give a fuck what it is you’re-- I don’t care, Mint. I jus’ want you to stop hurting yourself.”

“Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. My bad.” His mouth is suddenly dry and his throat too small and his eyes too wet. “My mistake. I’ll just--,” he hooks a thumb towards the door and nods, trying to hide the catch in his voice, “--see myself out.”
