Nothing like a good hike to feel energized, right? Well, maybe in his own case, at least. Lam wasn’t sure he could say the same for Rook. Maybe he should’ve picked somewhere a little less toasty than the fiery path to drag his boyfriend out to for a good dose of exercise. And nature![break][break]

But hey—at least it was a dry heat and not the humid heat found on the islands around Alola. Still, he eased off his pace and slowed to a stop. Twisting around, he took careful backward steps as he faced Rook. “Holding up okay, babes?” He was just about to offer a water bottle from his bag when one of his two cramorant waddled up to Rook, head cocking to the side as she surveyed him. Her long beak opened, and Orange Crush promptly spritzed the other man with a weak WATER GUN.[break][break]

Pepsi Blue watched on with Lam as he winced. At least she was trying to be helpful?

Rook was a bit of a city boy, apparently.

He wasn't much of a mountain hiker or a traverser of hot terrain. The heat swelled up, sinking into his skin. He was very sweaty already, and they'd hardly been walking more than an hour. Every step-up in their path was a massive obstacle, made worse by the fact that bubblegum didn't seem to know how stairs worked and would cry for help everytime it came to one. He had to haul the fuecoco's fat little body up to the next step, only for him to cry again.

"I'm okay," He said, a little out of breath and completely unconvincing.

That was about the time that orangey spit on him. Watergun, spit. Same thing. He was dripping with liquid that had no defined source and that was bad enough. Still, he didn't have it in him to be angry at a pokemon that was only concerned for him. Did he really look that bad off? "Thanks, buddy..."

“You sure?” he asked, not wholly convinced. Though Bubblegum was worse off, it looked like. “Maybe you should get one of those strap-on carriers,” he said with a laugh, stooping down to pick up the fuecoco this time.[break][break]

Lam’s grimace remained throughout the remainder of Orange’s ‘assistance,’ nose wrinkled up. Even he wouldn’t have cared for the treatment—at least in a locale where there was little actual water to draw from. “At least she didn’t use spit up?” he offered as a consolation once the ginger cramorant had finished and simply looked up at Rook, pleased at her efforts with unblinking, green eyes.[break][break]

She was very obviously proud of herself, so Lam had to fight off a smile as he backtracked a few paces to finally hand the water bottle over to Rook. “Guess she takes your hydration seriously.” A laugh started to creep into his words, though he tried to keep it down. It was still evident in the wobble in his lips, the twitch of a nerve in his cheek.[break][break]

"Yeah, I think so." The whine that was emitted wasn't intentional. He wanted to seem like it was all okay and he wasn't being defeated by a big ol rock. Sadly, his cover was blown. Rook smiled though as Lam helped Bubblegum up, he was thankful because he wasn't looking forward to helping the pink chunk up again.

"I can't imagine it feels much different though." He laughed, shaking like a dog to dry off, but it felt like a wasted effort. At least he wasn't hot anymore, which dramatically helped the queasiness he was feeling. It certainly wouldn't be the first time the heat affected him this way.

He rolled his eyes, but was distracted by a pokemon in the distance. "Ooooh!" He quickly tossed out a pokeball while it was distracted, hoping to catch it.

[attr="class","text"] Lam juggled the fuecoco, curling the little guy in his arm like Bubblegum was a barbell. “Dude, you’re like a bowling ball,” he remarked, tickling the pink reptiles under the chin. “Well, think we can hang here for a minute anyway. See what’s around?”[break][break]

He poked Rook with the water bottle to get him to take it. “True, though maybe a little less gross.” At least Rook was upright. Lam knew his partner didn’t do quite as well in the heat as he did. But that was, of course, reversed when it came to the cold.[break][break]

“Oh, good eye. I didn’t even notice that,” he said as Rook tried to snap up the victreebel. Instead, it was the grafaiai perched on a nearby boulder that caught his eye.[break][break]

Switching Bubblegum to his other arm, he fished out a pokeball, and then nodded to Pepsi Blue, who had remained placidly by his side. The cramorant waddled forward, and blasted the lemur-like creature with hydro pump.[break][break]

“Think the poor lil guy got it worse than you did,” he observed, laughing again as he tossed his pokeball. Returning, Pep’s wings stretched out as he squawked—obviously showing off for the other cramorant.

"You're gonna make him self-conscious." He whined, but it was true. Bubblegum was a chonker. Rook couldn't help it, he had to give him extra food. He just looked up at him with those sad eyes and fuecoco tears.

Tucking away the Victreebel, he was immediately graced with the sight of an arcanine, laying down and sunning itself. "Big puppy," He whispered, loosing Queenie, who attacked with Crunch. He threw another pokeball. He cringed a little at the poor grafaifai who was laid flat by a massive spurt of water. "Okay, I'm not feeling so ungrateful anymore." He laughed at that.

[attr="class","text"] “Nawww,” he replied nonchalantly as he tossed the fuecoco up into the air, then catching him again with a quiet oof as Bubblegum chattered enthusiastically. “There’s nothing wrong with being a lil tank, right bud? Gonna be good and supermassive when you’re all grown.” Lam tossed him up again.[break][break]

Having retrieved the waterlogged grafaiai with a grimace, he silently promised it a sit under the hair dryer later if it was still soaked through. A little purple nidoran nosed at his ankle and he stooped to pet it—he loved these little dudes. Much to Bubblegum’s annoyance once the attention was off him.[break][break]

Lam was undeterred— “I got two arms.” he scooped the nidoran, who climbed halfway onto his shoulder, peering over it with awe to see the larger nidoqueen take down the arcanaine. “Holy— that was a ginormous one!” He looked over at Rook, grinning as he returned to his side. “I’d give you a high five, but my hands are kinda full.”

Bubblegum seemed to appreciate Lam's encouragements, which made Rook feel a little bad for not being more encouraging. It was a little difficult right then. Though there seemed to be something of a competition for Lam's affections, which made him laugh. "Should I be jealous too? I don't have a shoulder." He pouted, shaking his head.

"Yeah he was cute, right?" Maybe not in the way he appreciated but he still liked big dogs (even if he preferred cats).

"Yeah yeah yeah, rub it in why don't you?" He scoffed, but his attention didn't last as his attention zeroed-in on a Venipede. Before the little guy could see him, he whipped out a pokeball to catch.

[attr="class","text"] “Nahhh,” he replied with a short shake of his head as he wandered over again, “you don’t need to be ‘cause you get this instead.” Leaning up he pressed a quick kiss against the other’s nose, then added a second to his lips. The nidoran crawled further up Lam’s shoulder, as Bubblegum was squashed between them with a honk of protest.[break][break]

“Yeah, he looked super fluffy. Like I could take a long nap with him as a pillow.” He grinned, brows lifting. When was he not thinking about the opportunity for a nap?[break][break]

He laughed, “You know I only tease.” Lam bumped him with his hip for good measure as he finally tapped a pokeball against the nidoran to secure it. A shadow from above fell over them as Rook was distracted by the venipede. Lam looked up to see the large shape of a charizard sailing over them, mouth open as it looked to turn them into toast.[break][break]

“Tag team it, quick!” Both cramorants squawked, and turned their long beaks upward–one with a jettison of water gun and the other with a much heftier hydro pump.
