The curses of one of his favorite places in the city being popular, honestly. With a number of meetings and other things of importance either postponed or otherwise already attended to, he’d found himself with the odd free day that day— and for a little while, he hadn’t exactly known what the fuck to do. After some thinking, he’d settled on heading to one of his favorite cafes, but y’know. One thing leads to another. You get called up, distracted, maybe even almost kidnapped into a chain of regretful situations—[break][break]

—regretful but fun situations, mind you, but still.[break][break]

Then those plans get canceled, briefly revived, and then canceled again. You know the drill, really— but the important thing was that he was left with time in the end. By the time his schedule was in the clear, though, it was already a fair amount of time past opening, so as he slipped through the door and found himself in the face of a pretty hefty line, he could really only sigh and bite the bullet.[break][break]

Not that he minded waiting, but yeah. He had other ways to pass the short wait times, anyways, and in light of that, he breathed an idle hum before reaching for his phone and earbuds. He’d only barely managed to plug them in and slip a bud into one of his ears before noting the faint audio of a…familiar audio.[break][break]

…A very familiar audio.[break][break]

He looked around with as much subtleness as he could before tracing the source to be right in front of him, ironically enough. Blinking, he gave those around him another, quick look before slowly and ever so slightly leaning to the side in an attempt to look over the shoulder of the person in front of him.[break][break]

[attr="class","star2"]A day off during the week itself had come to feel like a rarity these days. Unneeded at HQ in Evergrande, Calla was afforded the opportunity to do as she pleased—not that she necessarily stopped working in all entirety.[break][break]

Her thought had been that if she just swung by that little cafe on the corner, she could tip tap away at the stupidly elaborate planner spreadsheet saved on her laptop (as a precious backup to the one on her work computer.)[break][break]

Then she’d feel prepared for the following day before it even began.[break][break]

Okay, so maybe she was a bit overzealous about the thoroughness of her job. Whatever. No one was there to judge her for it.[break][break]

Or for the tiktoks she scrolled through on her phone as she waited in what she’d call an egregiously long line any other day of the week. But she wasn’t running drink orders for the rest of the office, so her impatience dialed back a few degrees.[break][break]

Normally she scrolled past the fancams that would pop up on her feed, but her thumb paused then hovered away at the familiar flash of bright, tealish-blue hair. Okay, she was a fan, so she’d watch this one—even if these sorts of videos were kinda corny.[break][break]

Music tinkled from her phone speaker, and she clicked the volume down a bit as she zoned in on that seemingly endless screen scroll.[break][break]

”...oh, hello~.”[break][break]

Now that hadn’t come from her phone. Calla’s shoulders hiked up as a voice spoke over her shoulder. Something that wasn’t difficult to accomplish given her short stature, but startled her all the same.[break][break]

“What the—?” the words blurted out in a squeak. Panic crawled through her and lit her nerves on end. Because she could really think it over, her fight or flight instinct chose the former, and her foot lifted to stamp down at the same time as her elbow drawing up before ramming straight back in a blind search for a soft spot.

The words left his mouth without much thought, but they’d been realized quickly after the fact, nevertheless. Y’know, not quick enough to prevent imminent disaster from claiming his ass and making him its bitch, but for what little it counted for, damn did it count. Out of instinct, he lifted his hand to cover his mouth as soon he’d said his stupid, stupid part, already beginning to lean back and get ready to apologize for overstepping, but hey.[break][break]

He’d only been given enough time to blink and begin to open his mouth, but rather than words, a stunned and otherwise indescribable wheeze left his lips as the person in front of him snapped her foot onto his. Naturally, he hunched over slightly as the pain jolted through, but not quite enough as her elbow swung back and found its quarry[break][break]

Bullseye, really— but not at the sweet spot that was likely intended, oh, no, no.[break]
Listen closely, and you could hear the sweet, sweet rustle of jewels, coupled fittingly by the guy that owned them hunching over even more and letting out a second wheeze— one that was somehow even more indescribable than the first.[break][break]

”God—...! Yup. Yup...” he rasped, slowly crumbling onto a knee as he keeled over onto himself. His knuckles found themselves against the floor beneath him, tapping rapidly against it in a feeble attempt of…what? Composing himself? Making himself feel better? ”Deserved. Deserved. Sorry—”

Not that she particularly felt bad. Well, not at first. He’d gotten in her space and startled her. It was a knee-jerk reaction from someone who was accustomed to sticking up for herself and for her brother.[break][break]
If he didn’t want to get elbowed, he shouldn’t have been creeping over her shoulder.[break][break]
It’s a mentality that quickly faded from her mind as she whirled around to tell him as much. Self-consciousness had been at the back of her mind, but it crept in as other people in the coffee shop turned to side eye the commotion. It prickles at the back of her neck, but the flush that had begun to seep into her face didn’t darken until she looked up at the man curling in on himself at her feet.[break][break]
She blinks repeatedly as the familiar shock of teal blue hair registers in her mind. No. No way.[break][break]
Then it fully clicks and her mind erupts into pure, flustered chaos when he actually manages to glance up at her.[break][break]
“Oh. Ohmygod.” Her face goes completely crimson, all of her bravado gone.[break][break]
Xiao. The Xiao. She just elbowed, the Xiao in the balls because he’d caught her watching a fancam tiktok of him..[break][break]
Eyes round and mortified, Calla stoops down beside him. Offering hands to help him up, though she’s not sure she can really pull him up. She’s tough, but not that strong. Heart hammering in her chest, her expression pulls into a wincing grimace. All of her normal pride and steeliness falling away in favor of her embarrassment and also…her reprehensible, swooning, fangirlish behavior. Which was also embarrassing as hell, quite frankly.[break][break]
“Sorry, I’m sorry! You scared me.”
