Her brow rose—obvious in her skepticism. “Wow, am I supposed to be, like, soooo insulted by that?” Her face twisted up, “If you could come up with plenty, then you should have no problem giving an example.”[break][break]
She plopped down on a bench that faced the pond, and for a moment her mouth twisted smugly. “Someone sounds embarrassed. Hit too close to home?” Watching him sulk, she fell silent to some of her own lingering thoughts.[break][break]
Calla snorted and looked away, and she pulled her feet up on the bench so that she could rest her chin on her knees as she hugged her legs. She didn’t look at Ant as she spoke, concentrating hard on the duckletts. “I’m not that girly.” Not usually, though maybe it was nice sometimes. “…I was dating someone until recently, and a lot of our dates felt like that. Not all the time, he was really sweet. But his family was really rich. It was easy to feel like that was a gap I couldn’t cross. Even if he never actively did anything to make me feel like I was less than.”[break][break]
Why was she telling him all this? It was stupid, she had no reason to justify her earlier reaction. Or explain away her dating preferences. It was Ant so he’d probably just crack some stupid ass joke. “But when you grow up with next to nothing, it’s difficult to not expect that treatment.”[break][break]
And in the end, it hadn’t mattered anyway. Uriah could give all the reasons in the world, but the small paranoid part remained in the back of her mind—for all her work and grit, she was never going to be enough. Not for a family like his. Almost two years, wasted.[break][break]
She huffed, suddenly annoyed at herself for showing her hand. So she twisted it back into scolding. “You shouldn’t be feeding them that, it’s bad for their digestion.”

She’s not thinking with a clear mind. The punches she tries to land on the Rocket are uncoordinated and flailing. More like slamming her fists down and hoping she makes contact. Like a wild, cornered animal finally lunging out.[break][break]
Her mouth opens, and no words come out. Only guttural sound. War cry.[break][braek]
Dey are trying to twist away and she is still on dem. She can feel her knuckles make contact against soft skin. Her nails grapple at der clothes—an infuriated purrloin trying to scratch.[break][break]
And then an outside force snatches her up.[break][break]
She howls at the resistance as her eyes register the Rocket now at short distance from her. She flails and lashes out against the pokemon holding her back, hands scrabbling at the sturdy arm of the grimmsnarl. And much like the unkempt, childhood version of herself would do, her mouth opens and she bites down on that arm so that it will let her go.[break][break]
WHAT THE FUCK?[break][break]
A laugh slips out at der obvious horror. “Yeah,” she spits out as she continues to struggle, “expecting some uptight, law abiding citizen who only plays by the rules? Ha!”[break][break]
This is what people expect of her. They think because she is formal and stiff and icy, that she is bound by an unwavering code of ethics. That she walks around with a perpetual stick up her ass. She lets them think so. It’s partially true.[break][break]
Just not the stalwart morality part.[break][break]
This is who she is under the surface. It is nice dey finally see beyond her obvious inexperience to what lurks underneath. It is empowering.[break][break]
“YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT!” She screeches as they hightail it. The grimmsnarl releases her to follow, disappearing in a flash. Calla takes off after dem, but her lungs burn from her first sprint, and from the unhinged screeching. Her steps slow to a stop. “YOU BETTER RUN!”[break][break]
Her teeth are bared, fire lit in violet eyes as her chest heaves with loud breaths.[break][break]
She stares after dem for a long time. Even after dey vanish from immediate view.[break][break]
Then, composing herself, Calla flips the long strands of her hair over her shoulders, straightens her clothing, and assesses the situation before pulling out a radio to report the situation. The wild-eyed girl is gone, replaced by cold formality.[break][break]
But it’s still there, hidden away—the thrill.

In their patience, or lack thereof, and she and Freya are two peas in a pod. She holds herself in and reigns in the tempest of emotions that batter at her every day. Her job demands professionalism, and if there is anything Calla Roth is exceptional at—it’s her job.[break][break]
She is not working right now, however.[break][break]
Like hell is she apologizing. She’s repulsed by the idea and it writes itself across the lines of her face. The crease in her brow and the wrinkle in her nose. Her indignance flares up, and refuses to give Freya what she wants simply because she is older and higher ranked.[break][break]
“Okay. Fine.”[break][break]
Calla straightens her shoulders, chin tilting up as she eyes the councilwoman. Someone who is far tougher and stronger than herself. There is a twinge in her gut that says bad idea, Calla. What do you think you’re doing?[break][break]
But she has always pushed back with the scrappy insistence of an underdog. Surviving in the streets of Viridian City before the takeover ever upped the stakes and forced her out.[break][break]
In the last two years, she has become a softer creature. The hardness around her heart softening for someone she treasured, and for what? For URIAH BLACK to walk away.[break][break]
She is so, so tired of being too soft.[break][break]
She wants that girl back. Cold and removed like ice, but burning wild under all of those layers. Molten cored. Even if it means punching above her weight class. She steps away from the equipment, eyes still on Freya.[break][break]

There is absolutely no way type:Jill will hold up against that grimmsnarl. Especially not when the bronzing tanks the hit instead—leaving the goblin at full vitality. The battle seems to be lost, but the war? That, she thinks, has just begun.[break][break]
It doesn’t matter, though.[break][break]
All at once, the gravity lifts and Calla’s stride stumbles. She’s quick to catch herself, though, and rights her balance mid stride. Then she’s launching herself forward with renewed motivation, a grimacing smirk stretching across her mouth as her lungs burn and her sights lock on dem with target precision.[break][break]
In her periphery, she knows that the rising type:null is going down again just as quickly. It is subdued by the spirit break, unconscious body flashing back to its ball.[break][break]
But her motive has shifted trajectory—amplified as she sees dem take a backward step with confused, uncertain footing. Good.[break][break]
If the battle is going to reach a dissatisfying conclusion, then she can have this instead.[break][break]
Calla Roth is not a disciplined or practiced fighter. All of her skills, rusty for sure, rest in playground tactics. Kicking and spitting and clawing and battering with fists far less coordinated than any trained boxer’s.[break][break]
“Not so tough now, huh?” She yells the question with the sort of taunting menace of a child pushing back. Defiant and half wild with delight as she lunges at dem with the intent of grappling dem to the ground for a sound smackdown.[break][break]
In hindsight, maybe she should’ve led with this.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, Calla knows that sending out the type:null was a mistake. That she is not weathered enough despite her trips to different ultra worlds. Despite getting her hands on the amalgamation of a creature in the first place. It is too much in its wildness. And perhaps she is too much too.[break][break]
She’s too angry, she’s too weak.[break][break]
She’s not the person she thought she would be when she was a little girl. She’s not the person she thought she would be when she was a teenager watching Kanto go up in flames around her–forced to flee what little home she’d had.[break][break]
But when she was no more than a weedy, whipsmart girl, she’d been tougher. The need to keep her twin brother safe and happy had demanded it. At one time, there had been a reason the bigger kids in their neighborhood didn’t want to see her around. She hadn’t been afraid of them, or intimidated.[break][break]
She tells herself not to be intimidated by this Rocket or her type:null’s failure to do as she says now. Somewhere, buried under the shambles that her life has become, that girl tries to claw her way to the surface again. She tries to yell for the type:null to yield again as it charges the ultra beast, but it’s futile. They collide, and it detonates.[break][break]
The impact of the blachephalon’s mind blown is immediate. She barely has the time to twist and shield herself from the brightness of the implosion before she tumbles. As the smoke clears, Calla rolls to her feet, wiping dirt from her face. She expects to see the type:null mangled, or maybe in pieces.[break][break]
But it’s tougher than she gives it credit for. She’s tougher than she looks. That doesn’t mean it’s in any fit condition to fight for much longer, though, and her list of options is running down. The realization intensifies as the smoke clears and she’s met with the site of a mega-evolving grimmsnarl and the ever present bronzong.[break][break]
Mega evolution. Yet another tool she lacks.[break][break]
Calla staggers under the weight of gravity as the air becomes leaden around them. An annoyed sound rises in the back of her throat as violet eyes pin on her opposite. It’s akin to a growl.[break][break]
But as she struggles, so too does the Type:null in its attempt to rise back up on clawed feet again. It forces its head up and finally uses the move Calla had requested of it in the first place–the multi-colored glow of a TRI ATTACK aims itself at the grimmsnarl, if only to keep it back.[break][break]
“You sure lean on all these extra gimmicks a lot, dont’cha?” Calla leers at dem. Though if she were being honest, so would she. It doesn’t stop her from bluffing, however. She takes a shake step forward. If she can’t unnerve dem in battle, she will do so with her fists instead.

Something smug sinks in under Calla’s skin as the Type:null makes easy work of der hisuian goodra. Maybe she can actually do this. She’ll claw her way through all of her opposition if It means she makes something of herself.[break][break]
“Duh. Obviously.” Her hair flicks back over her shoulder as Calla lurches forward and sweeps it out of the way. Her mouth curls in a toothy grin though her brows are still pinched together in concentration. In a weird show of ferality that makes her look more like she’s grimacing. But there is something thrilling in the turning tables.[break][break]
Until there isn’t.[break][break]
She watches the blacephalon emerge, round head rocketing up into the air. She hates these things. Between the guzzlord and these jesters in the ultra space city, she’d been unable to have an actually useful trek there. Then again, she probably should never have been there to begin with.[break][break]
But it doesn’t matter, because the type:null will make quick work of it.[break][break]
Confidence swells where it has no right to. “Take it out with Tri Attack!” She commands the beast, but no multi-colored beam forms at the helm of its masked head to inhibit the ultra beast. Calla’s anger stokes, and under that…there’s a flurry of panic. “Tri Attack!”[break][break]
For a fleeting second, her assuredness returns as the type:null swings the blade of its head down and turns toward the headless blacephalon. Her broad smile returns, and she looks across the space at the Rocket triumphantly.[break][break]
But then it charges.[break][break]
The smile slides off of her face as it barrels full tilt toward its opponent. Risking it all for the biscuit with an ensuing double-edge.[break][break]
“No!” she howls the word, but there’s no stopping it. Her gamble was an ill-advised one—who does she really think she is, trying to command a wild beast like that? It happens so quickly, the detached head of the ultra beast hasn’t returned to its body yet.

she's made a habit of coming here when there will be as few people as possible to share the space with. it is bad enough that she hardly knows how to train properly without the eyes of others shifting toward her mid-set. but as the region slowly crumbles to the chaos building in, around, and through it, calla finds herself more and more agitated.[break][break]
so more visits to the gym are necessary.[break][break]
that unsettled feeling claws at her insides, and she refuses to address it for what it is - fear. ugly, incessant fear and a sense of foreboding that her past in kanto will come calling for a second round. and because she will not look that fear in the face, it stokes her anger into something hot and bright and ravenous.[break][break]
so when someone draws too close to her periphery for comfort, it takes very little for her to boil over about nothing.[break][break]
it only takes a stray nudge, in fact.[break][break]
calla staggers with the movement, and the weights she'd been resetting clang against one another. "do you mind?" she barks the words as she yanks down her headphones and whirls on the person.[break][break]
fully expecint some dudebro to start instructing her against (Greyson Connors) she finds that the target of her misdirected fury is actually freya morningstar.[break][break]
the councilwoman. shit.[break][break]
but the buzz of her nerves overrides any starstruck behavior or attempt at apology. her heels dig in. even as her face flushes bright red from the mistake, her jaw sets stubbornly. "well?"

Once again, Calla presses forward–intent on carving her place among those in the League who can actually do something about the Rocket’s that continue popping up along the western seaboard like noxious daisies. Her stubbornness hasn’t flagged quite yet, though maybe she should’ve been thinking a little bit harder about the whole stealth aspect of moving forward. It shouldn’t surprise her as much as it does when she actively crosses paths with someone.[break][break]
She stops short– the machop at her side drawing up with flexed arms. The Rocket uniform is, obviously, a dead giveaway.[break][break]
Her head tilts as her eyes narrow at her opposite. If they hadn’t been donning it, she might’ve not been able to tell her apart from your run-of-the-mill civilian. Small and petite just the same as herself, though (regretfully) just a bit taller.[break][break]
Not that Calla was about to bring any less of a fight. More often than not, her shorter stature often left her underestimated, as a matter of fact. “Get ready, focus up,” she tells the machop, who has yet to be bestowed with an official name just yet. “You don’t waste time,” she remarks, her mouth twisting in a sharp smirk as she brandishes a different pokeball. It rolls in her hand. The heavy ball’s dark silver color flashes in the gray light of the sky overhead. This suits her fine– her hand curls inward toward her chest for a moment, ball clutched between her fingers before her arm extends upward.[break][break]
It goes flying forward, an overhand with a back spin.
A roaring bellow echoes down the route as a golden steelix flares into view and stretches up, up, upward to tower above all. “No holds barred, Kin.” Another sound issues from the steelix’s throat–the sound maybe a growl, but more like crumbling gravel as he shakes and AUTOTOMIZES. Rubble sheds itself from its heavy body, and when each bit falls away, he moves just a bit faster with each thrash of his body.

Agitation leaked into Calla’s posture and movements as she stomped through the woods around Route 104.[break][break]
She’d set out that day with the intention of proving something, even if it was mostly just to herself. And while she was still in one piece…it would be a lie to say she hadn’t gotten her ass readily handed to her. The battles had been somewhat close, but her poor skills were abundantly clear.[break][break]
Maybe she hadn’t totally lost.[break][break]
But it wasn’t good enough. Not to her. And it wouldn’t do the League any good if she couldn’t drive at least one Rocket into the dirt.[break][break]
Irritated, she kicked at a loose rock that was maybe a bit too big to be kicked. The flare of pain in her toe was instant, and she howled her indignant rage, only to realize that she should’ve been keeping quiet. Her hands slapped over her mouth and she froze in her tracks. Her alolan ninetales, worse for wear but steadfast, cocked her head to the side as she looked at her trainer.[break][break]
Furia made a slight chuffing noise–a sound of exasperation if there ever was one, and she leaned forward to nudge her cool, wet nose against Calla’s hand. A slight attempt to soothe the fury that lingered in the girl’s petite body.[break][break]
Cal tried to let out a breath and she leaned against a tree, eyes falling shut as she pressed a palm to her forehead. This was pointless, wasn’t it? Some of her anger bled out and she registered the tiredness in her limbs. The frustration at not being good enough finally sliding from indignant to despairing.[break][break]
She was meant to run, wasn’t she? A coward’s exit, just like Kanto.[break][break]
Her hand smacked lightly against her forehead as she grit her teeth and tried to shake off the self-deprecation. Maybe she should just call out her altaria and fly out of there. Forget this ever happened and that she’d ever tried to be something more capable than her means.[break][break]
But the low growl that erupted from Furia made her go still–the cold flush of dread washing through her. And it was then that she could hear the rustling coming from behind the tree she rested against. How did she miss it before? It was plain as day.

“Then we agree on something,” she retorts, then scoffs. “Astonishingly.” Calla doesn’t waste time on things like considering why a Rocket is a part of the organization. Or now dey don’t look all that much younger than herself. It’s black and white in her mind–someone is on her side, or they aren’t. And all she cares about is making sure that she doesn’t lose to dem.[break][break]
If she can be considered a threat to this person, then maybe she’s actually getting somewhere.[break][break]
Not that her mawile noshing on the pure steel of the goodra’s hardened shell really cuts an intimidating impression. She grits her own teeth as Vesper reels, jaws shaking as the pain reverberates through the appendage. The sparkle of terastralization overtakes the dragon, and something inside of Calla seethes at the sudden disadvantage.[break][break]
This is where another, formidable trainer might mirror the upping of the stakes. But she doesn’t have a tera orb. Or a dyna band, or keystone, or anything that might elevate her poor mawile against the now-ground type.[break][break]
She doesn’t have anything.[break][break]
Or wait. Maybe she does have something. Calla’s brows furrow for a split second, the only trace of hesitation through the red veil of her aggression. She hasn’t exactly worked with this pokemon, and working in League HQ, she knows the risks in sending one out that hasn’t been properly regulated.[break][break]
Either way, she had better think fast. Still, reeling over the toothache, her mawile stumbles back–turning back toward the goodra only to be blasted back by the second mud shot. The jet of watery sludge smacks into her head-on and sends her sprawling.[break][break]
Despite her hesitancy, or maybe in spite of it, Callas’ fingers slide over the pokeball anyway, and the voice in her head that says no weakness, no mercy pushes her forward. Dey are not deserving of her pity or any more of her time.[break][break]
She intends to push forward toward Petalburg, whether dey like it or not.[break][break]
In a fluid motion that surprises even herself, the pokeball snaps open in time with the recollection of her spent mawile disappearing into her own ball. “Take it down,” she hisses at the type:null that barrels free, the axe-piece embedded in its head swinging wildly. Free of confinement, it rages forward and that chaotic, wild feeling hums in Calla too.[break][break]
Her mouth splits in a grin, and she finds herself stepping forward, closer to the fight itself as her eyes look beyond the clash of the type:null attempting to drive its IRON HEAD into the soft belly of the hisuian goodra, toward her own opponent with der clever moves and cheeky, electronic quips.

Rumbling emanated the center of the abomasnow’s chest as he plodded down the street. Littering the small section of the lower district were other Pokémon, watching dutifully as excited, costumed children scattered through the neighborhood—yelling and laughing as they marched door to door with the intent of raking in biggest of candy hauls. Rufus, however, had never been relegated to babysitter.[break][break]

Beside him, his trainer watched on and sensed his uncertainty. Tiny and hardly coming up to his middle, Calla nudged him with an elbow. “Hey, it’s not so bad. Theyre all pretty thrilled to see such a big witch’s familiar.” It was true—complimentary to her dress, striped tights, and wide-brimmed hat, the big ol’ abomasnow was sporting a clip on pair of meowth ears.[break][break]

More than one curious child had patted him, and eventually he became a big fuzzy vehicle, toting them around on his shoulders despite his intimidating size. A big softie, after all—though keen to keep any outside trouble at bay. If only for the sake of the kiddos arguing over who got a piggyback ride next.
