The mawile tromped ahead of Calla, the long, toothy maw swishing behind her. “Did you hear something, Vesper?” she asked her companion, and Vesper fixed ruby eyes on her before pointing toward the brush where a gligar bounced and swayed on its tail. Calla frowned and turned down a different place where the road split. Tossing her hair and ignoring the wild pokemon as it craned forward and stuck out its tongue at them.

Had she ever been to the safari zone? No, Calla didn’t think she had. Maybe once in her youth, she’d visited the one in Kanto. But this one was foreign to her. It seemed like a good idea, though. She’d been tromping around in those rifts, so maybe if she wanted to actually get stronger, she should take the time to practice more.[break][break]

Vesper shuffled along beside her, completely prepared to do battler with whatever they found.

Assistance with poke-jobs was not something Calla often had time for. But the opportunity was not one to pass up when she came across the request.[break][break]

Enmei was a regal creature—elegant and graceful in temperament and action. So when she took the stage, spinning up into the air in a DRAGON’S DANCE, it didn’t look quite the same as the other dragons who had gone before.[break][break]

All of that mighty power turned graceful and fluid in the extending sweep of a long next, softened by the floating drift of cloudy feathers as she swept through the air. All of it undeniably pleasing to the eye, and hiding the fury of a strong strike beneath a more placid surface. The long, delicate feathers from her head and tail streamed out around her as she trilled proudly and twisted upward so that spiraled before she descended.[break][break]

Felt better, right?[break][break]
Violet eyes shift away, lips pressing into a thin line. “...yes.” She doesn’t quite know what to make of the way he carries himself. His swagger isn’t exactly cocky in the way she’s come to know in interacting with Matias. But it’s still confident in a way that makes her want to push back.[break][break]
She holds her line just as stubbornly as he holds his own. She does not say thank you. She does not demure or swoon or go to pieces over his expertise and insight.[break][break]
She simply observes. A calculating, clinical gaze that tracks his movement–pinpointing on his wrist and the way his muscles flex in his forearm as the joint twists and makes impact with the back. She thinks that she gets it.[break][break]
And then he pretty much obliterates the bag, and her eyebrows shoot up. Though she doesn’t emote much more than this. He has already startled her once, and he won’t be doing it again.[break][break]
Calla watches in mute fascination (not that she would like to acknowledge it as fascination, mind.) “Right..” Clearly, he knows what he’s doing. But that was markedly different, and they both know it was a little more than than getting ahead of yourself.[break][break]
“I was told that the gym was open access for all building staff and associates.” She steps back, arms folding across her chest. She covers her internal reaction up with an air of indifference and snark. The sudden thought that maybe she’d wandered into the wrong room and mistook it for the staff access gym space.[break][break]
“Calla Roth. Cal.” She watches him coolly, wondering if he thinks she’ll be impressed with the way he’s just obliterated his own training bag. She might be–but she will not be showing it. “I think you’re the one beating your bags to hell, actually.”

“Yeah, you’re right..” Her brows furrow, and she tries not to fret anymore. But he stayed behind because he had to get her free. It would have been her fault if anything happened to him.[break][break]
While they’re waiting, she stumbles back when a smaller guzzlord rumbles out from behind a building. She tenses, prepared to set her ninetales loose on it like they had with the other. But it’s…confused? She’s not sure exactly.[break][break]
Or maybe the more aggressive one was protecting it for some reason.[break][break]
Whatever the case, she tests the water by fishing out a pokeball and tossing it out. The guzzlord is sucked inside without much fight. Strange… Maybe it was sick, or injured? Or just a baby? Frowning she stoops down and picks it up. Turns it over in her hands before Chad’s return distracts her.[break][break]
A smile breaks across her face at the sight of the machamp. “Good job, Chad.” Relieved that he wasn’t lost because of her, Calla pats his arm and grins up at them both.[break][break]
“Let’s get out of here.”[break][break]
Unknowing of the fact that is probably the last time she’s with the both of them like this.

“How nice for you.” Calla sniffs, lip curling. She finds the surprise irritating. He watches her with an air of something refined? She can’t determine the word she wants. It nettles her.[break][break]
Her job assures that she knows who Greyson Connors is. She would not be able to work under a different member of the Elite Four and not have at least a passing awareness of the others. But she had never been the most deferential sort of person.[break][break]
In fact, she’s fairly certain that’s a large part of the reason MATIAS SILPH hired her in the first place. That, and to clean up after him. As much as she’s able, anyway.[break][break]
Her attitude is not spared for Greyson, nor does she really care if he takes offense to it. He does not reprimand her, though, and she offers no apology. He didn’t do so for startling her, after all.[break][break]
Instead, he responds with instruction.[break][break]
A muscle in her brow twitches, her jaw setting as her teeth clench. She watches him for a beat, staring hard as she meets his stare—eyes a blaze of furious violet. Her mouth opens, about to tell him to shove it, then it closes.[break][break]
Her feet shift, hips rotating as her stances flows with the motion he suggested. No, it isn’t a suggestion. He demands it, and she’s annoyed to listen, but when she cocks her fist back and swings at the bag again. The reverberation that kicks up her arm is far less severe this time.[break][break]
Calla’s face flushes immediately, pleased with the outcome. Then her lips press in a thin line. She could have figured this out on her own, surely.

Frustration continues to build in her chest—all heat and fizzy, angry static. Her fist cocks back, prepared to make another lousy blow when a voice lifts through the room. Straight through the quiet that permeates the gym apart from the creak of the bag and her own complaints and breathing.[break][break]
Immediately, she startles—whirling toward Greyson Connors, instantly annoyed with the fact that he scared her. Worse, that she let it show.[break][break]
Instead of thanking him for the tip, Calla cuts a sharp glance his way and then turns toward the punching bag again. Her fingers flex in irritation. “Do you make a habit of watching people when they don’t know you are?” she asks instead.[break][break]
She considers punching at the bag again, but she doesn’t know how to hold her wrists that isn’t the way she was already doing it. So she settles for wiping at the sweat that beads on her forehead with the back of her arm.[break][break]
To the side of the mat, Cal’s mawile is plopped on the ground. She glances at the Elite Four, almost apologetically. As if to say, Don’t mind her. She’s like this with most everyone, with a silent blink of her eyes.

There is a certain frustration that buds under the surface. A feeling of helplessness, like she can’t take care of herself. Of course, it’s a little irrational—at her stature, of course she wasn’t going to be able to free herself of the guzzlord’s hold on her own.[break][break]
But she doesn’t care for feeling so breakable, either.[break][break]
Her ninetales pelts ahead of them, frost pooling at her feet as she ensures the path is clear for the two retreating humans.[break][break]
Calla doesn’t let her hand slip from his, allows him to pull her along—though this, too, makes her feel a bit useless. She is not fast enough on her own.[break][break]
She frowns, looking back over her shoulder. “Are you sure? I don’t want to just leave him.”[break][break]
Chad is like family, after all.
