She swung out at the punching bag with her fist with as much power as she could manage.[break][break]
Swung, overestimated her ability to aim, missed it by a mile.[break][break]
An annoyed sound rose in her throat and she impulsively swung the other. Her knuckles smacked against the dense, sand-filled bag. The chain suspending it rattled, but it barely moved the damn thing.[break][break]
Instead, a flare of pain reverberated up her hand and her wrist, and Calla winced back, flapping her hand in a lame attempt to dispel the hurt.[break][break]
“Stupid,” she muttered furiously, “stupid bag, stupid, weird alien city with its big ass pokemon.” As she complained, she reverted to just pushing at the bag with the flat of her palms, the shocks still traveling up to her elbows.[break][break]
It was frustration with herself, of course. For how soft and vulnerable she felt.[break][break]
She used to feel stronger than this. In Kanto, as a child who refused to let anyone step on her or her brother. Her strength, of course, has been no more than playground ferality. Stomping on feet and biting rogue fingers didn’t translate into this sort of fighting.[break][break]
Her time here in Hoenn had softened her. Her relationship had softened her. Or her former relationship, rather. This job, void of the need to hold her own, had softened her.[break][break]
And Calla Roth hated it.[break][break]
So she was there in the training facility with free access for staff, taking bad swings while undoubtedly holding her fists wrong. All because she’d gotten snatched up by a Guzzlord in some derelict city, and because the whole HQ was now buzzing with energy. Tension because they were on the precipice of something dark.
It felt the way it had when she was a girl. Before things went south in Viridian City. She felt it in the pit of her stomach.[break][break]
She should have never let herself grow so unprepared.

[attr="class","snub-greyson"]Repeated thumps reverberate all throughout the hallway outside of the training center. The sound was common enough but something to its uneven cadence pulls his attention, curiosity lending to his steps as he enters the training center.

A woman, strands of ashen hair clinging to her forehead in sweaty clumps, grumbles to herself as she attacks a punching bag.

Greyson frowns. He was far from the expert in hand-to-hand others might've been, but he was certainly experienced enough to see the problem.

He decides to intervene more out of intrigue than anything.

"You'll break your wrist if you continue striking that way."

Frustration continues to build in her chest—all heat and fizzy, angry static. Her fist cocks back, prepared to make another lousy blow when a voice lifts through the room. Straight through the quiet that permeates the gym apart from the creak of the bag and her own complaints and breathing.[break][break]
Immediately, she startles—whirling toward Greyson Connors, instantly annoyed with the fact that he scared her. Worse, that she let it show.[break][break]
Instead of thanking him for the tip, Calla cuts a sharp glance his way and then turns toward the punching bag again. Her fingers flex in irritation. “Do you make a habit of watching people when they don’t know you are?” she asks instead.[break][break]
She considers punching at the bag again, but she doesn’t know how to hold her wrists that isn’t the way she was already doing it. So she settles for wiping at the sweat that beads on her forehead with the back of her arm.[break][break]
To the side of the mat, Cal’s mawile is plopped on the ground. She glances at the Elite Four, almost apologetically. As if to say, Don’t mind her. She’s like this with most everyone, with a silent blink of her eyes.

Greyson’s eyebrow quirks up, hands clasped behind his back, chin raised proudly. A side-effect of his patron and the stigmata etched into his flesh.

“I find the surprise cathartic.”

Most here recognized him and instantly were on guard so as not to offend or delay him; a tiresome side-effect of rank that he downright despised. Nothing felt genuine anymore.

“As I was saying: you’re going to break your wrist that way. Your strikes are too inflexible; furthermore, you need to rotate the hip and leg on the same side as your strike.”

Amethyst orbs steady on her as if absorbing every single detail.

“Do it again. Better this time.”

“How nice for you.” Calla sniffs, lip curling. She finds the surprise irritating. He watches her with an air of something refined? She can’t determine the word she wants. It nettles her.[break][break]
Her job assures that she knows who Greyson Connors is. She would not be able to work under a different member of the Elite Four and not have at least a passing awareness of the others. But she had never been the most deferential sort of person.[break][break]
In fact, she’s fairly certain that’s a large part of the reason MATIAS SILPH hired her in the first place. That, and to clean up after him. As much as she’s able, anyway.[break][break]
Her attitude is not spared for Greyson, nor does she really care if he takes offense to it. He does not reprimand her, though, and she offers no apology. He didn’t do so for startling her, after all.[break][break]
Instead, he responds with instruction.[break][break]
A muscle in her brow twitches, her jaw setting as her teeth clench. She watches him for a beat, staring hard as she meets his stare—eyes a blaze of furious violet. Her mouth opens, about to tell him to shove it, then it closes.[break][break]
Her feet shift, hips rotating as her stances flows with the motion he suggested. No, it isn’t a suggestion. He demands it, and she’s annoyed to listen, but when she cocks her fist back and swings at the bag again. The reverberation that kicks up her arm is far less severe this time.[break][break]
Calla’s face flushes immediately, pleased with the outcome. Then her lips press in a thin line. She could have figured this out on her own, surely.

"Felt better, right?" His voice carries the weight of confidence without the bias of arrogance. He wasn't ignorant to the flare of anger that crosses her face, but nor does he particularly show interest in apologizing for his own attitude.

Greyson moves to a bag of his own, positioning himself in-front of, and within' line-of-sight of calla mccoy.

"Momentum carries a great deal of force. I'm sure there's some equation behind it—don't ask me though. Watch my wrist." He follows his own direction from before, this time rotating his wrist as he executes the jab.

"Break your wrist and Team Rocket will take advantage." His punch comes louder; faster. "They'll take advantage of anything, if you let them. Soon enough you'll find yourself at the end of one of their blades, then next—"

He doesn't finish, flaring his anger into WILLPOWER just enough to empower his strike. His fist meets the leather and keeps going, ripping a hole through the bag, catching him off guard.

Greyson blinks.

"Ah, my bad. Got ahead of myself." He shakes out his fist more out of habit than pain. "Anyways, what's your name and why are you beating my bags to all hell?"

Felt better, right?[break][break]
Violet eyes shift away, lips pressing into a thin line. “...yes.” She doesn’t quite know what to make of the way he carries himself. His swagger isn’t exactly cocky in the way she’s come to know in interacting with Matias. But it’s still confident in a way that makes her want to push back.[break][break]
She holds her line just as stubbornly as he holds his own. She does not say thank you. She does not demure or swoon or go to pieces over his expertise and insight.[break][break]
She simply observes. A calculating, clinical gaze that tracks his movement–pinpointing on his wrist and the way his muscles flex in his forearm as the joint twists and makes impact with the back. She thinks that she gets it.[break][break]
And then he pretty much obliterates the bag, and her eyebrows shoot up. Though she doesn’t emote much more than this. He has already startled her once, and he won’t be doing it again.[break][break]
Calla watches in mute fascination (not that she would like to acknowledge it as fascination, mind.) “Right..” Clearly, he knows what he’s doing. But that was markedly different, and they both know it was a little more than than getting ahead of yourself.[break][break]
“I was told that the gym was open access for all building staff and associates.” She steps back, arms folding across her chest. She covers her internal reaction up with an air of indifference and snark. The sudden thought that maybe she’d wandered into the wrong room and mistook it for the staff access gym space.[break][break]
“Calla Roth. Cal.” She watches him coolly, wondering if he thinks she’ll be impressed with the way he’s just obliterated his own training bag. She might be–but she will not be showing it. “I think you’re the one beating your bags to hell, actually.”
