Furia yelps as the ground cracks in a rapidly traveling split under the Alolan ninetale’s paws. The fissure makes her jump back, but one paw catches in the crumbling earth and twists painfully. Even so, she is not one to back down from a battle. Her maw loosens again to reveal sharp teeth. Ice coagulates on her fangs as the cool swirl of an ice beam fires in the direction of her attacker.[break][break]
Calla grits her teeth, nose wrinkling in snarling distaste that mirrors the vulpine sharpness of her companion. Another pokeball is unclipped from her belt, and it rolls into her hand, though she doesn’t immediately send a second party out. Each of them sit in a neat line—shiny and far from scratched or battered. An obvious tell that Calla is green behind the ears.[break][break]
Not that this stops her from pressing forward against her discovered opponent.[break][break]
Her violet eyes scan the rocket across from her—from their reaction, her assumption seems to have been correct. There is a sense of validation that comes from trusting her gut.[break][break]
The cadence of the electronic voice hums in the air and Calla frowns. “Why should I waste my breath on hellos? We both know why we’re here.”
The large dondozo vanishes and as Furia backsteps to her side, Cal hurls the ball in her hand forward. In a burst of light, her shiny mawile’s large jaws swing as the pokemon twists toward der goodra. The appendage unhinges wide and snaps against the muddied attack—earning her a mouthful of watery, slimy silt and grit.[break][break]
“Now do me a favor and lose.” Vesper hisses her agreement and the mawile lunges forward toward the soft-looking dragon with sharp teeth. Intent on playing rough with it.[break][break]
It’s bold talk for someone who has fought so little. But Calla has never been anything short of pugnacious and headstrong.

calla roth had decided that she was done standing on the side lines.[break][break]

though petalburg isn't close to her home, she finds herself wandering route 104, determined to do something other than pace the floor back in her apartment or do all of her paperwork at hq days before it's due.[break][break]

in truth, it feels like kanto all over again. a repeat of a dark chapter in her life that makes her cagey and restless at the idea of repeating it for a second time. but she isn't as young this time around and she isn't going to run away now.[break][break]

what she has is a chip on her shoulder and a whole lotta anger that she doesn't know where to put down. she finds herself here, itching for an ill-advised fight simply because she's looking for that.[break][break]

foolishly trying to prove anything and nothing at once.[break][break]

by her side, her alolan ninetales prowls forward, ears alert and fur on end along the ridge of her spine. furia senses another presence first, but it doesn't take calla long to catch up. she locks onto a pair of ocean blue eyes and for a moment, she only stares at dem.[break][break]

then the spell breaks and tension draws a tine line in her posture like a wire pulled tight.[break][break]

she sucks in a sharp breath, mind skittering before it all goes silent. this is what she's been looking for - the hesitation in her actions dies with the snap of her fingers. the only wordless command her pokemon knows, and furia heeds it instantly. she crouches in front of her trainer, maw opening to let loose a SHEER COLD gale-howl that is intent on freezing the opposition in der tracks.[break][break]

she'd rather act first and apologize after if she's made a mistake. no one can fault her for being on guard. (or so she tells herself.)

Calla yawned as she shuffled through her apartment. It was early—earlier than she probably needed to be up on a weekend, but the habitual routine of being an early riser in order to commute to work had embedded itself into her sleep cycle. Rubbing her eyes, she made her way to the coffee pot to begin its daily percolation.[break][break]

Only to stop short as she passed by the patio door to her cramped balcony. There was an eiscue perched in front of her tiny window garden. Could eiscue fly? How had it gotten up there??[break][break]

hey! shoo! she yelled as she thumped on the glass, but the bird only looked at her and went back to its snooping.[break][break]

Scrambling, she found a pile of pokeballs she’d recently bought and threw open the door. Vesper, her mawile, roused from the couch and followed. She pelted the eiscue with a fairy wind and while it was dealing with the pulse of air to its face, Calla chucked a ball at it, smug as it was sucked inside. that’ll teach ya to mess with my grepas.

If he’d given her any sort of honest answer, Calla probably wouldn’t have known what to do with it. She didn’t anticipate one—or any sort of explanation for that matter. And so she was content to let it hang there between them. Questioning the nature of things, and how they had come to be, would only make her over analyze it.[break][break]
She glanced at him again—a long, withering look. “Oh, yeah? I’ll think about that, then.” And if she chose to sock him in the nose, she wasn’t going to give him warning, or time to brace himself. She’d clock him once his awareness was dimmed, or he was inevitably distracted by all the cute duckletts that lived at the pond.[break][break]
But Calla had been trying to manage her temper better (something that was going poorly.) Or at least, she was attempting to curb it into something that didn’t burn until she felt the need to expel it in some way. Break something just to outlet the energy. She’d lost too many coffee mugs and water glasses lately with the way the region was spiraling into chaos.[break][break]
It all hit too close to home.[break][break]
Shoving off the annoying reminder of her anxieties and latent anger issues, Cal threaded her fingers through her hair before tossing long strands of silvery white over her shoulder. “Ducklett pond.” She sipped from her cup again, and continued to trace the familiar route until they reached the entrance gate of the park. It wasn’t too fancy of a place. A simple stretch of grass surrounded by a fence. Total urban set up for a city like Slateport to point to when their ecological sustainability was called into question.[break][break]
But it wasn’t far from her apartment, either. And sometimes she liked to sit somewhere that wasn’t inside the walls of her home. Or her office. “Run your mouth again, and I’ll push you in,” she warned as the concrete sidewalk gave way to gravel.

maybe she should make a habit of this - visiting the safari zone. it had gone over decently well the last time she'd visited with her mawile. but today she'd brought along a newer companion.[break][break]
the machop was much smaller than the machamp she'd grown fond of over time. but with enough time and patience, surely this one would grow up to be just as big and tough as chad had been. damn. she missed chad.[break][break]

calla rolled the pokeball between her hands as she looked down at it hesitantly. what if this one wasn't as friendly? she sighed, and pushed the release regardless to set the machop loose anyway. it fist pumped the air and then blinked up at her with bright red eyes.[break][break]

well, this was the way to find out, she supposed.

Of course he’d make her regret being playful only minutes later, but for right then, it was okay. “Yeah, so I work doubly hard to meet my mark.” She never wanted anyone’s help. She taught herself how to subvert her shortcomings. Small stature included.[break][break]
Simply put, his kneecaps were toast.[break][break]
It was unfortunate, then, that Ant had to go and ruin it. For once, she wasn’t remaining totally pissed in his presence. But it would’ve been better to stay annoyed than feel the pang of hurt he subjected her to. It was too vulnerable, too under the skin. Calla didn’t’ like that. Didn’t like that he could needle her so pointedly with little effort. And still, he followed.[break][break]
“Dunno why you are,” she retorted, grumbly as violet eyes shifted away. Her brows were still pinched. If she was such a princess, why did he trail after her? No matter how much satisfaction it brought her to realize that he felt the compulsion to do so.[break][break]
Well, he sounded contrite, at least, which wasn’t all that typical for him. The self-degradation, however, was not new. Calla’s determined exit slowed to a stop and she looked at him sidelong. She softened somewhat, but she didn’t relax her posture. Her lips remained pressed in a thin line. “You shouldn’t make claims about a person’s life that you nothing about,” she said, still terse, but her tone had quieted. The anger had seeped out of it.[break][break]
She sighed, long and defeated. Her shoulders sagged slightly in her resignation. Fingers relaxing around her cup, she lifted it and took a sip. Then she jerked her head to the sidewalk ahead of them. “Shut up, Ant. It was, but shut up. C’mon.” Calla definitely wasn’t parading him up to her front door. But he could suffer a walk to the park. There was a ducklet pond she liked sitting at.

“I’m sure you’re perfectly capable of evading the PD…” she huffed, arms folding as her chin tilted up, “but not if I take you out at the knees first.” The corner of her mouth twitched upward as she eyed him. The only indicator that she might have actually been making no more than a joke. Of course, she was fairly certain that Anton was capable of ducking trouble—he had that natural sort of slippery look that spelled trouble.[break][break]
Calla did not stop to evaluate why she was friendly with him when she could deduce that about him.[break][break]
She wasn’t sure where he’d come from, or what he was like before they knew one another. As far as she was concerned, he’d sort of just shown up in her life and then camped out there ever since. Showing up at random moments until their interactions became more regular and almost routine. But that didn’t mean she was cool with him just assuming her own history. Especially when his guess landed so far off base.[break][break]
It stung, quite frankly, and it wrote itself across her expression plainly before she could cover it up with the anger that seeped in too. It was easier to deflect with her temper. But he’d struck too close to a pain point. She’d never tried to disguise her circumstances. She had always simply tried to rise higher with no more than stubborn willpower. She wasn’t forgetful of the dirt her parents had left her and Kieran in. The turmoil of war and the fear of not knowing whether or not they’d make it out.[break][break]
And what right did fucking Ant have to judge her?[break][break]
Her hand gripped her cup too hard. She could feel the hot liquid through the cardboard, searing heat because she wasn’t holding it carefully. If he wanted to insult her by deciding something completely untrue about her, well then he could do that. Cal wasn’t sticking around to humor it.[break][break]
But there was a strange twinge of satisfaction that followed when he scrambled up to follow after her. She didn’t stop her trek, though. Fully expecting him to follow her out the door. She cast him a look back over her shoulder. “Are you?” Cal rolled her eyes. “Yeah, you are.” And then, quieter, she added, “That was low, even for you.”

With the trapinch out of the way, cal gave her mawile another pat on the head. Curious, and wanting similar attention, an observant popplio flopped forward, fin swishing happily. Vesper readied a defense, but calla shook her head. no, it’s okay, I think. The seal pup hopped over as she stooped down—eager to receive a friendly scratch. Pretty cute, wasn’t it? She couldn’t help but take this one home too.
