the gym is mostly empty. there are a couple of stragglers this late at night, but freya pays them little mind. she's been here at stranger hours, with stranger company. her shortsword lay some distance away, resting in the towel she'd tossed it on. after growing frustrated with her footwork, she'd moved on.

weights, legs, cardio. anything and everything under the sun while her phone pinged occasionally with reminders to other loose commitments.

but KING WAYLAND can't fault her for this, not when he does the exact same. she wipes the sweat from her face, blinks through a wave of vertigo (did she forget to eat lunch again? it's been harder to remember with Gwendolyn Conway still on the mend.) and bumps someone while racking her weights.

she's made a habit of coming here when there will be as few people as possible to share the space with. it is bad enough that she hardly knows how to train properly without the eyes of others shifting toward her mid-set. but as the region slowly crumbles to the chaos building in, around, and through it, calla finds herself more and more agitated.[break][break]
so more visits to the gym are necessary.[break][break]
that unsettled feeling claws at her insides, and she refuses to address it for what it is - fear. ugly, incessant fear and a sense of foreboding that her past in kanto will come calling for a second round. and because she will not look that fear in the face, it stokes her anger into something hot and bright and ravenous.[break][break]
so when someone draws too close to her periphery for comfort, it takes very little for her to boil over about nothing.[break][break]
it only takes a stray nudge, in fact.[break][break]
calla staggers with the movement, and the weights she'd been resetting clang against one another. "do you mind?" she barks the words as she yanks down her headphones and whirls on the person.[break][break]
fully expecint some dudebro to start instructing her against (Greyson Connors) she finds that the target of her misdirected fury is actually freya morningstar.[break][break]
the councilwoman. shit.[break][break]
but the buzz of her nerves overrides any starstruck behavior or attempt at apology. her heels dig in. even as her face flushes bright red from the mistake, her jaw sets stubbornly. "well?"

patience wears thin. it has never been her strong suit, as no shortage of others in league hq would like attest to, so her brows furrow as soon as the person whirls with such intensity. her jaw tenses and in the seconds it takes to swallow her anger and to decide, not worth it - walk away, she follows up with just enough to send her over the edge.

it doesn't help that in that fraction of a second, she puts a name to her face, and recognizes her as matias' pr rep.

"you can apologize," she says slowly, hand raising as she points to their left, furious golds not once leaving the woman's own, "or you can spar me."

In their patience, or lack thereof, and she and Freya are two peas in a pod. She holds herself in and reigns in the tempest of emotions that batter at her every day. Her job demands professionalism, and if there is anything Calla Roth is exceptional at—it’s her job.[break][break]

the hunger snaps at this woman just as much as it bores into freya. her head tilts, following her movements as she stalks to where freya had pointed, and with each step freya catalogues her strengths and weaknesses. anger vibrates in her cells, threatening combustion, and their fight will end quickly so long as the draconid pushes the right buttons.

her weights clank as she racks them. she yanks her tangled hair and knotted braids into an elastic and follows her. she walks three paces, turns, and raises her hands. her knees soft-lock and she sways, loose and flexible, just the way king taught her.

and then she explodes outward like an oil fire, racing to get into the woman's guard before she can say mercy.
