Mossdeep burned before his eyes.[break][break]

A white light waxed across the lens of his glasses, illuminating his dead stare to the company of this dark, empty room. A long table was where he sat, elbows propped, as an assembly of seats branched from him; two rows left unoccupied, as if to represent the purge he had wrought.[break][break]

A projector flickered, broadcasting its display on the far wall, showcasing the video that he played from the adjacent laptop—the same video, over and over.[break][break]

A dark monolith shambled across the streets of Mossdeep, firing a hyper beam at the League Officer that had dared to oppose it—an entire city block laid to waste before the might of an unknown creature that had descended from a portal in the sky. Footage of that day was captured by those foolish enough to remain in the city, catching glimpses of the ensuing battle from their cell phones.[break][break]

Shaky, low-quality videos were the only sources of evidence that were easily accessible.[break][break]

Rocket had disbanded, or so a headline read, as he scrolled through his web search. The story would not hold his interest as his finger dragged down the track pad.[break][break]

Been there, done that.[break][break]

Desmond Kelley, the self-appointed Rocket Underboss, knew where his priorities lied. After the events of a few days prior, there had been no time for leisure as he left countless Rocket members to flounder in the dark—a necessary sacrifice. If Rocket was supposed to play dead, then he had to make that death convincing.[break][break]

dominic sinclair had his own tasks to handle as they transitioned through this... re-branding. Some members would have to be cut off—left to the mercy of the League or to fall into obscurity without Rocket to protect them. Others would surely branch out on their own, making fires that the League would have to cleanse. Whatever course was taken, whatever chaos was wrought, it did not matter to him.[break][break]

It would only make it clear to the world that Rocket was truly and utterly destroyed—and what a splendid lie that would be.[break][break]

But, not all would be sacrificed.[break][break]

A phone was raised to his ear, listening to the dial tone as he waited for an answer. “Find me in Lilycove, in the new office block that is adjacent to the Museum. The building will be empty and you will find the doors unlocked. Come to the 26th floor and seek Conference Room 1209... and don't dally, unless you're keen to the treatment your constituents have received.”[break][break]

The burner phone was wrought in his hands, splitting the device into two halves—he had not given the woman the chance to reply. The silence of the newly build office could have been deafening, if Desmond Kelley was not wrapped in his own thoughts.[break][break]

He waited, letting the footage play on repeat.

[attr="class","anyapost"]she welcomes change. warfare, slaughter, has been the same for a millennia, and she's grown bored with the current state of affairs. if silas hadn't been so easy to manipulate and take advantage of in his manic state of mind, she'd have turned to other outlets a long time ago. the world is an unforgiving place and there's many who would reward her methods.

she raises a cigarette to her lips, inhales, leans back against a dilapidated building just inside the confines of slateport. what boats haven't been ransacked by unchecked grunts drift against their bindings.

she flicks ash. her pocket buzzes. unknown caller. she raises the phone to her ear, inhales more smoke, half-closes her eyes as she listens.

a smile curls at her lips.

this is evolution.

she's an inkling as to who's on the other end of the line. as the call disconnects, she thinks back to the footage she'd witnessed several days ago, the public outcry following the aftermath of the goliaths that now threaten their world.

rocket is gone, promise the league, and we will turn towards this new foe with unwavering resolve. we will protect you.

but now that silas has been disposed of, the metamorphosis has begun. they've only jump-started the next chain of events. warfare, slaughter--the tactics never change; people die with bullet holes in their chests, choked by psychic forces from armor-fitted pokemon.

it's brutish, boring. but now rocket has a clean slate. now they can fester in the darkness like they're supposed to. cockroaches don't die so easily.

she flicks her cig to the ground, clears her throat. the statuette lions at either side of her blink, shaking out their coats as they rise to follow her. they arch their backs in unison, stretching with jaws open, tongues lolling, teeth glinting.

she boards one of the boats, sniffs disdainfully when a half-drunk grunt is woken from his slumber. "i's all over, lady. we're--hicc--eughall finished. i's done."

"kain, dear." the male pyroar lunges, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt and dragging him overboard.

"w-wait, i can't swim!"

she turns incredulously as she twists the boat's key (withdrawn from her pocket) in the ignition. shiva's jaws snap around the ropes tethering it to the dock. he flounders in the water and anya laughs. "then what the fuck were you doing here?"

the engine sputters to life and she heads off. the twin pyroar stare at the wake she leaves behind. fingers slip under the waves.

the arrangements are as promised, though she's not surprised. she takes the elevator to the 26th floor, as per his instruction, hands lovingly scratching at the backs of her pyroars. they purr affectionately, though fall quiet as the elevator doors click open. her heels clack against the floor.

1209 looms before her and she knocks twice before entering. the lions follow behind her and she shuts the door.

Time waxed and waned. Its passage was not lost on him.[break][break]

Desmond stirred his spoon, watching cream melt into his mug of coffee until it shone like caramel. He needed something sweet—something warm—to keep the mind sharp as he regarded the mess that laid before him. A mess that was present through the videos displayed and the pile of manila folders that were spread across the table.[break][break]

A folder was taken, opened, and inspected.[break][break]

If it did not have what he desired, it was closed and thrown back to the pile. It was a constant rotation of information that he had to digest.[break][break]

When Miss Fowl made her appearance, she would find the man resting a hand to his temple, easing the tension as his skin crinkled. It would just mar his features with more wrinkles. “Good evening,” and the man would pivot his chair to regard her, looking far more at ease than his phone call would have suggested.[break][break]

“Please, have a seat,” his hand to gesture to the chair nearest him—steam still rising from cup of coffee that rested on the cluttered table. “I called you here to—” fingers would fold to form a steeple as he pondered his phrasing, “—discuss the recent changes in management.”[break][break]

Silas Blackwell was dead, and he made it sound like a company merger.

[attr="class","anyapost"]several office chairs sit empty before her. she keeps her looking subtle, but still she observes as she sits, distant gaze flickering only to take in his features--several decades older than her, pale eyes, sharp nose, simple black glasses. she commits these features to memory; he's fairly plain, as far as men his age go, and she supposes that that's the point. their job isn't to stick out.

"good evening," she says as she leans back in her chair. she folds her hands in her lap, crosses her legs. the air crackles with the tension of strangers.

a smile curls at her lips and she laughs a teeth-bared laugh. cherry lipstick resembles blood. "so it's true then." she waves a hand. "do what you will up on your thrones. i care only about my funding and my resources and that they'll still be secure after these management changes."

she purses her lips, extends a hand to rest it on shiva's muzzle. the lioness purrs and leans into her palm. "how may i be of assistance in these regards?"

“Funding will not be an issue,” not with their new benefactor.[break][break]

Desmond Kelley leaned back in his chair, grasping a file from the pile—the aether foundation's logo was emblazoned on its cover. “We have already allocated a good majority of our resources from Slateport following the... events of a few days prior. I believe you will find it to be to your benefit.”[break][break]

The projector flickered, displaying the paused footage of Mossdeep.[break][break]

“You see, I will have to resend my responsibility as Head Scientist. I will need qualified candidates to overtake my existing projects—not that I will be ignoring my old position completely, but I will have other matters that will have to take precedence.”[break][break]

He gestured to the folders. “And there must be new projects, as well. Our areas of expertise may differ, but I believe I have something that will match your skill set.”[break][break]

A folder would be slid her way—the contents blacked and redacted.[break][break]

Type:Null. Polaroid pictures were tapped to the pages, showing the specimen that Alison Everly had retrieved. A secret that he had kept.[break][break]

“I believe you will find that one to be to your interest. Our connections at Aether have been fruitful, and it seems that they have found success with their various projects,” and he would tap his laptop.[break][break]

Mossdeep footage played again. “And we would not want to fall behind the curve, now would we?” He would say as the portal that deployed the Ultra Beasts hung high in the sky, distorting their atmosphere to show a world that they had never seen.

a neatly manicured brow rises as he belays her worry over money. curiosity peaks and die as quickly as it comes around; with nothing of true interest to latch on, it's put in a file cabinet in the back of her mind. so long as they have a benefactor, she's satisfied.

she reaches for the folder, leans forward a bit in her seat, giving away her interest. she pours over the photos, runs her fingers almost lovingly over the strange creature.

light shifts and she looks up sharply, dimples flashing as she smiles. though she half-stands, lips parting, as he points out the portal.

of course they'd have quieted this information.

she hungers for it. sitting tentatively back down, still on the edge of her seat, she rips her gaze away from the image and neatly fingers the stack of polaroids.

"no," she says, "we certainly wouldn't want that."

she relaxes then and leans back, sighing. "given slateport's compromise, i'm looking to relocate. i've never been in the business of getting my hands dirty unless i'm in a lab coat and under some fluorescence." she taps her chin. "i believe lilycove might make for the best possible location, but i'm curious to hear your thoughts."

she tilts her head. "and i'd like to to work with you, especially given our shared qualifications. when you have the time, of course."

“Those arrangements can be made,” and his smile was satisfied.[break][break]

Another member was welcomed to the fold. It was always so nice when a plan was coming together. “Miss Giovanni has left samples with us regarding her strange pokemon. They are still being processed. Matching segments of its DNA has been the most time-consuming. This was the first time I laid eyes on an artificial pokemon,” and there was a hint of fatigue as he rubbed his temples.[break][break]

“As far as I can tell, the pokemon has been engineered from multiple sources. It was a miracle that it managed to form one cohesive creature.” A question would linger from this analysis: why? Why had Aether gone so far to produce this chimera? And for what purpose?[break][break]

“I imagine Alison Everly will be in touch—she's just as interested in her little discovery as the rest of us,” and this was only scratching the surface. More research would await them. “There will be more prospects to come, but I'm still waiting on specific... information regarding the portal.”[break][break]

He sipped his coffee, nudging a small pile of the folders in her direction to read as she pleased. “If the information is what I believe it to be, then try to stay close to Lilycove in the coming days. You will not want to miss this opportunity.”
