it's so hot and knox is dying. okay, so he's not quite dying, but he's melting. soon, he'll be nothing but a puddle of a pale boy with cotton candy hair and he'll sink into the sand and it will get all gross and clumpy and then the sea will take him away and that will be that, except by then he won't be sweating his balls off.

mostly he's in a bad mood because sam is busy. sam isn't as busy as he was a few months ago, but he's still busy and it means knox has to find something to do with himself.

turns out when your only hobbies were peacocking for other men for most of your life, you don't really know what to do with yourself when your monogamous partner is off making the bacon.

his water-types love the beach. knox loves the beach. so he's here on the beach, sitting with his ass in the sand, letting the foamy waves peter out and swirl around him. nio sits beside him, blinking on and off in that way he does - one eye after the other.

blissfully unaware of the heat.

he'd rent jet skiis or do something fun or something, but summer's throwing a bitch fit and went and cancelled all his cards again.

nio's big tail slaps on the wet sand and he shifts back and forth, looking excitedly down the stretch of beach. knox noses his sunglasses down and gets a look at the man striding by.

[attr="class","text"] “Aw, Peaches..” Maybe it’s better that he didn’t manage to wrangle Rook into coming to the beach with him. Because it was quickly becoming apparent that the time is spent not lounging in the sand with his partner, but rather actively preventing his psyduck from being a hazard to herself.[break][break]

Clumsy as ever, she toddles into the surf and promptly faceplants in the shallow water. Rather than swim, she flails with burbled PSY YAIS until Lam has to jog away from where he’s dropped his things to go pull her up. Near the abandoned towel, his sprigatito plays.[break][break]

Clove chases the tide as it rolls out, only to scramble away when it comes creeping back in. Her paws kick out, irritated by the sensation of wet sand between her toebeans. And yet, moments later, she’s repeated the motion. Chase, run, priss.[break][break]

Her endeavors only cease when someone nearby speaks up– clever enough to know that cat means her. It makes sense, given all of the times she’s been called iterations of cutie pie kitty cat, cat cat, lil tiny babey cat, and so forth. Her ears prick, and a loud mrrp chirps from the back of her throat as large, rosey-pink eyes turn on Sam.[break][break]

Lam, who’s finally managed to wrangle up Peaches, twists when the sprigatito backtracks in an immediate effort to introduce herself. His smile is an easygoing thing that hangs on his lips with a lazy sort of friendliness. “Oh, thanks! She definitely doesn’t get tired of hearing it.”[break][break]

He hoists up the squat psyduck in his arms and she warbles out a dramatic lament as she flops back against his chest. As if to protest– “But what about me??”

knox pushes the sunglasses back up to the bridge of his nose. nio struggles to his feet with a huff and waddles slowly over to the sprigatito, small beady eyes fixated intently. knox pays him no mind and chuckles instead at the psyduck in the man's arms.

"psyduck always seemed so stressful to train. won't they, like, explode if they get too anxious? i mean, same, but that sounds horrifying."

nio, unblinking, reaches with one blobby paw to gently place it on the cat's head.

“I mean, she won’t actually self-destruct or anything,” he answered with a huff of laughter as he tries to juggle the Psyduck who is still flopping around in his arms dramatically. A flipper hand presses to her head—mimicking a swoon as she chatters out more pssssyyy yai yai yaaaais.[break][break]

“The psychic blast is something else, though.” A doozy, but he’ll take that over an explosion of feathers and other duck bits any day. “But it doessss make her pretty forgetful of her moves.”[break][break]

Lam plops down in the sand, releasing the Psyduck some, but still keeping her in the protective circle of his arms and crossed legs. His sprigatito, happy to accept any attention, trills and chirps as a floppy paw covers the top of her head.[break][break]

For a moment, she stares up at the quagsire with wide eyes before circling him and pouncing at his wide, flat tail playfully.

oh, well there goes all his knowledge of psyduck out the window. to be fair, knox isn't well-versed in most pokemon, even his own. he's good at reading captain and cry. that's pretty much it. (but cry's easy. he just whines all the time.)

"who's a useless little baby?" knox coos to the psyduck, thinking very much of himself as he says it.

nio blinks down at the cat. that blubby paw stays where it is in the air even after she ducks out from under it. by the time she's wiggled her rump and pounced on his tail, he's only just lifting the paw to see she's not there. he turns, slowly, lifting an arm to see her over his bulk.

a trickle of muddy water dribbles out of his mouth and he claps exuberantly.

"she's just like nio," knox says and raps on the quagsire's head, "absolutely nothing going on up there. the morpeko running around in that wheel died a loooooooooong time ago."

knox points out into the water. "y'ever swam out there to that rock?"

Peaches clearly enjoys the attention, either because she doesn’t realize that he’s calling her a useless little baby, or because she’s fully aware that she is very much that. Either way, the psyduck pushes herself up from the cradle of Lam’s arms and waddles over to Knox, continuing to squawk as she flops against his arm in what seems to be a hug.[break][break]
“Looks like she likes ya,” Lam remarks with a snort of laughter. Though that’s not really a difficult feat—Peaches likes anyone who babies her, little princess that she is.[break][break]
Clove follows the flap of his tail, chattering as if the quagsire’s tail is a pidgey outside the window rather than, y’know, a tail. She bats at it with soft paws, clearly playing rather making any attempt to maim Nio. The sprigatito mews in triumph when he looks back at her, then uses his tails to launch herself up his back to flop on his head.[break][break]
“That dopey smile is mad cute, though. Not gonna lie.” His nose wrinkles in amusement as he watches Nio. Then he follows the direction of the other’s point. “Don’t think so,” he answers with a tilt of his head, “why? Something special about it?”

"i'm honored," knox says affectionately, but he still looks quite terrified. he's not entirely convinced that the psyduck won't spontaneously combust at a moment's notice. wouldn't be the worst way to go, he supposes. all at once, not feeling anything at all. not sick to your stomach after swallowing half a pint of paint.

"he's a big dumb doofus, but he's my big dumb doofus. helluva swimmer, though." knox hoists the psyduck - arceus almighty, the thing ain't exactly light - up into his arms and grins wildly at lam's question.

"uh yeah, what's special is it's a coolass rock and you gotta swim to get to it. leggoooooo."

[attr="class","text"]As if he senses the apprehension from Knox, Lam shakes his head quickly with another laugh. “She really won’t implode, I swear.” He eyes the psyduck, who is now tottering back toward him before flopping on her belly in the sand. “Plus, if she was about to have a psychic outburst…you would know.”[break][break]
This level of drama from the psyduck is currently all personality.[break][break]
“Yeah, I getchu. Same with her.” Lam points at Peaches, who lets out a loud honk of sound when Knox wraps his arms around her and yeets her off the ground. She doesn’t struggle, though, which is par for the course. She’s a damn bowling ball, but she does love being carried.[break][break]
Again, his attention deviates from Knox and the wild look on his face, and moves to the rock in question. Honestly…it sort of just looks like a rock. But he’s not really the argumentative sort, so Lam shrugs as a lazy grin of his own twists at his mouth.[break][break]
He pushes himself up out of the sand. “Yeah, okay. Let’s swim to the big, coolass rock.”

she really won't implode, he swears. knox can get behind this, especially when the adorable little thing falls over into the sand. he too likes being dramatic for attention. the haunting threat, though, does make knox curious. how far do her buttons need to be pushed before the Beast is Unleashed?

nio seems to want to find out because when she flops, he mimics her. and nearly squishes her with his flabby body in the process. his mouth slowly crawls open with delight as he rolls over to look at the psyduck, and then at knox.

"get up, you oaf," knox says as he tosses his sunglasses to the ground and squints. his light eyes aren't made to be in the sun like this. the psyduck is in his arms now. he hefts her to his hip like a baby and watches lam consider the proposal.

then he whoops and takes off running. nio takes a full three seconds to comprehend, digest, and then act. he follows on all fours, blubber rippling every time paws meet sand. knox hauls ass and when they get close enough to the water, he throws the psyduck into the surf.

and dives immediately after.

[attr="class","text"]Peaches is content with the attention that Knox provides her. Well, she is until he takes off at run and then hurls her into the ocean. The psyduck goes flying, screeching as Lam watches. The flurry of frantic protests aren’t met with too much concern. She plops like a stone, and then pops up like a disgruntled, yellow buoy.[break][break]
“Don’t think she liked that too much.” He laughs, though, and takes off after the other.[break][break]
Clove scampers after them, fully intent on joining the fun… only to stop short as soon as the first drift of the shallow water licks her little kitty toes. The sprigatito recoils, little pink nose wrinkling in distaste. With a little hiss, she backs up and retreats to the towel Lam left behind shaking her paws off in an annoyed little dance.[break][break]
While she waits for their return, Lam catches up to Peaches easily. Paddling out, his hands extend toward her—ensuring that she keeps herself upright in the surf. “I know you know how to swim,” he chides her as she makes a show at flailing from the injustice of Knox just tossing her out there to fend for herself.[break][break]
Grumbles follow when her bluff is called, and within minutes the psyduck is paddling alongside him. Determined to keep him moving at her slower pace.[break][break]

The water fowl's stink eye now falls on their pale haired companion. "Oop. Maybe she's willing herself to self-combust, after all."
