The Destitute Delver

Personality: Howard Slayte is a well-read archeologist, paleontologist, and historian who is eccentric and light-hearted to those who know him publicly. While he isn't strictly 'positive', he insists on moving forward with a smile, given it is the one thing that Team Rocket and the League cannot take from him. Howard is not particularly brave, but he has an inquisitive side that leads to him exploring the world in an attempt to find out more about both it and himself. He is a respectful scholar who struggles with his position within the world as a whole, and laughs even as he hates himself for joining Team Rocket.

Role Within Team Rocket: Primarily focuses on excavating, extracting, validating, and transporting rare artifacts to be sold on the black market or at auction via smuggling. Indirectly funds Team Rocket. Assists in information gathering due to his public image as a respected historian and paleontologist, and is capable of traveling to other reasons for 'archaeological surveys'.

Etymology: Named after Howard Carter, the famous archaeologist, and slate, which fossils can be found in.

MOTIVATIONS

Howard's motivations can be divided into three categories: Understanding the world by understanding the past, surviving in Team Rocket, and financial stability.

Understanding the World: Howard is a person who researches the past in order to understand it for the sake of knowing more. He suspects that the world is doomed to repeat its own errors unless people learn from history. He has a passion for understanding why history repeats itself, as well as understanding the beliefs and means of communication belonging to ancient peoples. He has collected and read into dozens of religions worshipping everything under the sun, and also focuses on collecting and speaking as many dead languages as possible. He currently claims to speak fifty-six languages, though he is only fluent in a fraction of that.

Surviving in Team Rocket: Howard's relationship with Team Rocket is rocky, as he is fond of the pay the organization sends his way and that the organization 'values' his field. He is not, however, fond of their assassinations, brutality, and general cruelty. He has deluded himself into avoiding facing the consequences of allying with such people, but it is impossible to avoid this forever. Eventually, he'll have to confront this struggle.

Financial Stability: Howard is broke because he is poor at managing his money. While he has several degrees and a doctorate, he is constantly struggling with financial instability because of his obsession with collecting artifacts without sending them to Team Rocket to be sold. The reason for this contradiction in behavior is complex, to say the least.

PLOTS
Archaeology/History

As an archaeologist, Howard is constantly going out on digs and other missions to obtain valuable artifacts for Team Rocket to sell. This does not strictly include Team Rocket, however, as Howard still participates in digs for occasional jobs when requested. He is always interested in exploring ancient ruins, discussing history, discussing Legendary Pokémon, and visiting auctions and pawn shops to hunt down authentic valuables.

Team Rocket Corruption

Howard is in Team Rocket for the simple reason that they pay him well and respect his position (to an extent). However, his knowledge of the organization is lacking, and he is truly unaware of how destructive the group can be. How deep does the depravity go, and how much will he hate himself when he realizes what he helps fund?

Rocket characters who are interested in forming friendships and unfriendships outside of work.
Rocket characters interested in dragging Howard along while committing brutalizing and violent actions in the name of Team Rocket.
Rocket characters interested in utilizing Howard's talents as a historian/polyglot to further their own aims/that of the organization.

Social

As a Team Rocket member who hides in plain sight, Howard is constantly interacting with those with little affiliation with Team Rocket. As such, relaxing threads where shenanigans ensue, such as hiking, chillaxing, learning more about racing and training, and more are also welcome. These are primarily to keep Howard from turning entirely to Team Rocket.
