Haina Desert - Pokemon Sun & Moon

A VAST DESERT LANDSCAPE dotted with rocky structures and monoliths. Curiously, they almost seem humanmade, though there are no signs of people here. Shrubbery and turquoise crystals are encrusted throughout the bright and sweltering dryland. Occasionally, you may stumble upon rocky terrain that is difficult to traverse.[break][break]

Mysterious obelisks with missing seals are situated throughout the desert. No one knows why they exist, or who made them.

Yumi had read the reports. She knew what to expect of the Ultra Desert. Her backpack was full of water, energizing snacks, sunscreen, and other items to help her survive the blazing heat. She'd even worn appropriate clothing.[break][break]

Still, she sweated an obscene amount, rivulets rolling down her brow and into her eyes. For what felt like the hundredth time, she wiped it away with a handkerchief that was already soaked through.[break][break]

At least she had thought to bring her Rapidash, the Pokémon outfitted with a saddle and bridle to make riding easier.[break][break]

"What are we looking for, again?" she asked her companion, her partner for the job.[break][break]

Yumi would not be there if it weren't for an assignment by Team Rocket, pairing her with DANNY HALL, a man she'd worked with once or twice before.[break][break]

"Some kind of outpost or ruin, right?"[break][break]

[attr="class","dannymain"]danny has read the reports as well so the dangers of the ultra desert are not foreign to him. he knows of them even before he steps across the threshold that separates realities and universes.

"that's right. i dunno if we'll find one but we can at least try to make this trip enjoyable. i mean, look! there's something in the distance already."

he points ahead at a shape in the distance.

"race you there?" he asks from atop his mudsdale that stops at the sight of odd tracks in the sand. "hm?"

From that distance, the shape was indiscernible; Yumi could not tell if it was a manmade structure or a natural formation. But she was ready to race Danny if it meant getting out of the blistering sun's rays.[break][break]

But suddenly his Mudsdale stopped, prompting her to stop as well. When she followed his gaze, she finally noticed the tracks in the sand.[break][break]

"What are those?" she asked, unfamiliar with the type of Pokémon that could have made them. They led to the same far-off shape.[break][break]

"They're heading that way. Let's follow them and find out," she said, digging her heels into her Rapidash's sides. The Pokémon shot off. The woman shouted "Race you!" over her shoulder as she grinned.[break][break]

On the horizon, a sandstorm gathered, growing in size as it hurtled toward them.[break][break]

lost in his own thoughts, it allows yumi the perfect headstart.

"damn—okay hold up!"

they follow, trailing behind, and as they approach a SANDSTORM, danny is quick to slide on the SAFETY GOGGLES.

the further they go, the worse it gets.

"this is getting quite rough!"

The sandstorm quickly overtook them. Yumi wrapped a scarf around her nose and mouth to protect herself from inhaling sand particles, but they stung her eyes and grazed her skin where it was exposed. Squinting, she fumbled for a Pokéball and released its resident.[break][break]

"Mamoru! Use WIDE GUARD!" she yelled at the Gallade that emerged. A moment later, a shimmering field surrounded her, Danny, and their Pokémon.[break][break]

But it was only a momentary relief. The howling gale of the sandstorm shattered the shield.[break][break]

At the same time, the ground gave way beneath Yumi's Rapidash. Frightened screams filled the air as they fell through loose earth. Thankfully, she landed atop her Pokémon, the hardy creature using HEAL PULSE on her own injuries.[break][break]

"Danny?" Yumi called out, wondering if he'd fallen in with her.[break][break]

An underground tunnel surrounded her. Though the walls were rough and rugged, they seemed purposefully hewn out of the rock. Above, the sandstorm howled but did not enter, giving her and her Pokémon relief.[break][break]

[attr="class","dannymain"]danny hasn't fallen in but perhaps he should've because it seems like the far safer route. he stops beside the gap in the ground, hopping off his mudsdale to peer down.

"yumi! you okay?"

more okay than he is, that's for sure. he makes a quick decision and recalls his pokemon before dropping down into the hole with her.

"this looks like a safe route. i think it leads to that structure we saw."

centiskorch emerges from its pokeball, flames alight with a small FIRE SPIN as it leads the way.

Yumi recalled her Rapidash as Danny joined her in the underground passage. Mamoru the Gallade, however, remained out, ready to defend them in case of danger. "Ready," she replied with a nod.[break][break]

They followed the winding tunnels for what felt like an eternity, traveling in the direction they remembered seeing the structure. Finally, the ground began sloping upward, leading back to the surface.[break][break]

A clear sky greeted them as they emerged from underground; the sandstorm was gone, either abating into nothing or traveling in a different direction. Yumi breathed a sigh of relief—at least, until she saw the same tracks in the sand from before.[break][break]

"Hey, that Pokémon came here, too," she said, pointing.[break][break]

A strange, alien cry filled the air, startling Yumi. Glancing up, she saw an unfamiliar creature standing amid the wreckage of dilapidated vehicles and buildings.[break][break]

An Ultra Beast, she realized, just as the Pokémon LUNGED at them. Her Gallade jumped in the way, taking the full force of the blow, before retaliating with PSYBEAM.

[attr="class","dannymain"]not given much time to react, danny's forced to rely on his centiskorch and hope that its FIRE LASH is enough to hold the ultra beast back.

"that's an ultra beast!"

obviously. the question now is which one?

while he thinks, a FIRE SPIN wraps around the ultra beast in an attempt to restrain it. it breaks free with a HIGH JUMP KICK that sends the centiskorch up into the air.

"What?!" Yumi exclaimed, her gaze snapping to Danny in alarm, awe, and a little bit of fear. "It is?!"[break][break]

Even though she knew to expect Ultra Beasts in these realms beyond the rifts, she hadn't really imagined running into one during her first expedition without a superior officer.[break][break]

Gritting her teeth, she faced the slender Pokémon busying itself with facing down Danny's Centiskorch. While the Ultra Beast kicked it into the air, Yumi ripped a Pokéball off her belt and threw it to the ground.[break][break]

When the light faded, her Scream Tail stood alongside her Gallade.[break][break]

"Take care of that thing for us!" Yumi ordered.[break][break]

Charging with shocking speed, her Scream Tail attacked the Ultra Beast with PLAY ROUGH. At the same time, her Gallade aimed another PSYBEAM.[break][break]

Battered and severely outnumbered, the strange Pokémon decided it had enough. Uttering a horrible screech of frustration, it turned and fled into the desert.[break][break]

In the silence that followed, Yumi breathed a deep sigh of relief. "Holy shit," she said to Danny.[break][break]
