It was the middle of the night, the "witching hour" so to speak, but she banged on the door anyway. Beside her, Kallistatus hovered watchfully, its shining blue body - shaped like the letter K - glimmering faintly in the dim lights attached to the exterior of the apartment complex. If Nomi lost focus for even a moment, she could see out into the street despite facing away from it - as if she were looking through Kallistatus's eye - which was incredibly disorienting.[break][break]
"Parker, I need you!" She cried out desperately, heart still racing, adrenaline pumping - like she was still in the machine.[break][break]
Isaac hadn't wanted to leave her, but she'd insisted she would be okay. He had nearly as much to grapple with as she had, and he'd seemed...intent on something, like he needed to be somewhere else too. In the end, she trusted him.[break][break]
Her head ached, mind buzzing with the revelations she had experienced, the world forever changed, and somehow, deep down, she knew that she had been changed, too.[break][break]

after the texts, a very sleepy parker gets out of bed and plods over to the bathroom, though not before heavily patting maisey on the head. the granbull grumbles. parker brushes her teeth and swishes some mouthwash around and, still tired, stoops over her sink to splash some cold water on her face. it wakes her up well enough to chase away a dream's clingy remnants.

when she comes back out, there's another text from nomi. 3:35. that was three minutes ago. which means, since she's bringing an unown, she should be - "fuck." the phone falls from parker's hands as loud banging comes from the other side of the studio apartment.

parker leaves the phone where it is and sidles up to the front door, peering through the peep hole just to make sure it's actually nomi and not one of the dozens she's probably made angry enough to warrant a 3 am shakedown.

but it's nomi. and a blue unown behind her. huh. never seen that one before.

she opens the door and leans back a little because nomi's fist comes dangerously close to her face. one look and parker's shoulders square, gaze sliding from nomi and out onto the street. she grabs her arm.

"what's wrong? someone after you? get inside."

She careened forward as the door opened, the momentum of her swinging fist nearly bashing Parker in the face. Nomi stared up at the other woman with wild eyes, and time seemed to stand still until finally, blessedly, Parker got it. She pulled Nomi inside by the arm, none too gently, shutting the door so fast Kallistatus was trapped on the other side (the street was still empty, a flickering light next-door, a yawning Skitty in a nearby window) for several seconds before blipping inside via teleportation.[break][break]
"No," Nomi answered. Then paused. "Maybe?"[break][break]
Under any other circumstance, Nomi would have excitedly looked around the room, relishing her first time in Parker's apartment. But she only had eyes for Parker, launching herself forward. She clung to familiar muscles, buried her face in the other woman's chest, holding onto her so tightly it was as if she feared that Parker would suddenly disappear.[break][break]
"Parker - " she stammered, unnoticed tears streaming down her cheeks, awed and afraid and so very, very tired. "I saw it. They showed me. The beginning of everything. The creation of the universe. Of all universes."[break][break]
It made no sense, not even to her. She breathed in the familiar scents of Parker's soap layered on top of the remnants of yesterday's deodorant mixed with the sweat of sleep, and tried to calm her breathing.[break][break]

parker does not really care that the sparkly unown gets stuck outside. nomi may have brought it here, but that doesn't mean parker needs to let it - "nomi? nomi?" panic eeks into her voice when she turns and sees nomi's eyes have gone nearly white, leaving only black pupils staring at, no, through parker.

jump scare. the unown-k pops into existence beside parker's shoulder. she flinches and then nomi's eyes are back to normal and she's babbling like nothing's happening. like nothing happened at all.

"nomi, that's...what?" she says, exasperated now. she raises her hands to hold nomi's face, thumbs stroking away her tears. her brows furrow in concern.

"nevermind. just...breathe in?" parker sucks in her own breath, holds it, and then releases it. repeats the process until nomi catches on too.

Calloused thumbs wiped away her tears, so tender it was grounding. She began to breath slowly and deeply - in and out. In and out. In rhythm with Parker, their chests rising and falling, Nomi felt her heartrate slow and her head clear. In and out. In and out.[break][break]
The details of her surroundings began to crystallize, come into focus. Nomi's eyes - normal now, twin rubies that betrayed a struggling mind - glanced around the room, taking in the normalcy of it, the cozy messiness of a regularly inhabited studio apartment. A living room section with a tv, windows against faintly-cracked walls that looked out over Slateport (blinds shut to keep out city lights), a partition that - upon closer glance - was partially hiding a bed (she blushed, because she was still Nomi underneath all the cosmological untethering), and a small utilitarian kitchen area. There were other details ("Parker-things", she'd come to think of them later), but trying to identify all of them all at once threatened to disorient her all over again.[break][break]
Steady now, arms still wrapped around Parker's solid torso, Nomi asked softly, in a voice that sounded more like herself albeit exhausted, "Can I have some water?"[break][break]

nomi starts to calm down. parker's pinkies, stretched under her jaw, feel her pulse slow and only when that wild light fades in nomi's eyes (still their normal red now, thank the gods), parker drops her hands. not all the way though. one lingers by nomi's hip, a casual reminder that she's there. that nomi has a tether.

parker glances sideways, seeing her apartment through nomi's eyes. it's small. cracks spiderweb up the walls. her gym clothes are strewn over the worn leather couch in the living room. an empty cereal bowl is out on the glass coffee table. the rest of the dishes in the sink are rinsed, but they haven't been cleaned thoroughly (no dishwasher life, sadge...).

she runs her hand through her hair nervously. "i, uh, woulda cleaned the place if i'd known ya were comin'." and thrown some more clothes on.

as it stands, she's in boxers and a sleep crop. if she'd known beforehand nomi wasn't here for sexy times, she would have put something more appropriate on. that reminds her.

"you wanna get changed? i got some stuff y'can borrow. top drawer." she gives her hip one more squeeze before releasing her to go grab the glass of water.

The physical touch was grounding, Parker's voice a soothing normalcy. Nomi's breathing returned to normal, her heart stopped pounding, and her head ached a little less acutely. Now, she was simply tired, in a bone-weary sort of way. She yawned, swaying a little, leaning into the hand on her hip.[break][break]
"It's okay," she assured, in response to Parker's obvious self-conscious realization that she'd had zero time to prepare for her brand-new girlfriend to visit her living space. "I didn't give you much warning. No need to apologize." What she didn't say was: this is wonderful because it's yours and you're wonderful, but she had a feeling her expression would convey the sentiment, despite fumbling for the words.[break][break]
Parker walked away and Nomi was left floundering for a few seconds, not fully comprehending what Parker had suggested because of the sudden lack of stability, the loss of her tether. She blinked a few times, then padded forward, towards the section of the apartment that acted as a makeshift bedroom. She found the dresser, slid open the top drawer, stared down at Parker's clothing. Reaching out a hand, she ran her fingers over the fabric of a hastily-folded t-shirt, letting the tactile sensation further ground her. With each passing second, she felt more present, more settled.[break][break]
She pulled out the oversized t-shirt and quickly swapped it with her more formal blouse. It came down to her mid-thighs, so she pulled off her skirt, too. As she laid her discarded clothing on the bed, a sound startled her: there was a body on the bed. And it was snoring. Loudly.[break][break]
"Oh! Hello," Nomi greeted, as the Granbull sleepily cracked one eye open. She reached down to pet the violet canine, scratching behind her ears. The Granbull grunted - a happy sound? - then glared at Nomi when she pulled her hand away. Oh, okay. More pets, then. She could do that.[break][break]
Kallistatus appeared, floating down to observe Nomi's new friend. Nomi giggled, watching as the Granbull sniffed the shiny Unown-K with a mild interest.[break][break]
"What's your name?" She asked, as if the Granbull might actually answer.

parker has a brita filter. she reaches in the fridge for it and reaches up in the cabinet for a glass for nomi. her body stays mostly turned to nomi, watching her walk through her apartment like it's the most normal thing in the world. well, not really. she looks like a lost little deerling, puttering around and wired after...whatever made her come here in the first place.

nomi doesn't excuse herself to the bathroom to change. which makes sense. but there's something intimate about the silence and parker thinks, maybe don't look, but does so anyway. appreciates the drop of her skirt, the brief flash of skin when shirts swap, and then a swelling pride when one of her old shirts falls over her curves.

parker tucks the brita filter back into the fridge and snorts when nomi tosses her shirt on top of the pink shape.

parker comes up behind nomi and holds the glass of water out to her. she palms the granbull's head and scratches her roughly behind the ears, earning her an affectionate growl turned yawn. one eye stays open to watch the unown-k. her disinterest to the thing ought to speak volumes, but parker doesn't care.

"this is maisey," parker says.

she nods to the water. "drink." she rubs one of her eyes and flops into bed, shimmying up against the headboard and holding one arm out for nomi in invitation.

"and tell me 'bout the drugs you definitely didn't take tonight."

The water went down in one big gulp, and Nomi let out a small moan of relief as it eased the aching of her parched throat and the throbbing behind her temple. She set the empty glass down on top of Parker's dresser, then turned back to regard the Granbull, expression softening further as Parker introduced her.[break][break]
"Hi Maisey," Nomi greeted her officially, tone affectionate. "Sorry to wake you."[break][break]
Maisey merely yawned, shifted slightly - as if anticipating a new presence in the bed - and promptly fell back asleep. Nomi stifled a giggle, then crawled into the bed, drawn to Parker's outstretched arm like a magnet. She snuggled up close to Parker, resting her cheek against the other woman's chest, the top of her head nestled neatly beneath Parker's chin. Waves of cotton candy hair fell across them both, and Nomi closed her eyes, momentarily losing herself in the comforting warmth of Parker's body.[break][break]
"No drugs," she murmured. "I went into the RKS Machine. You remember what it's like, right?"[break][break]
Maybe Parker didn't want to remember. Nomi had mistakenly invited Yumi Hasegawa along for that particular trip, without realizing there was bad blood between the two women. She hadn't questioned Parker about it further; it wasn't her place to force it. If Parker wanted to tell her, she would. The jealous uncertainty that had inspired Nomi to bring Yumi along seemed silly now, a fragile thing that had shattered after the lake.[break][break]
"I went with Isaac," she continued. There was a weight to that choice. Parker would understand. It might even reassure her.[break][break]
"It was all rather routine. Three stages, like it always is. Except...when the final simulation concluded, the machine didn't spit us out. We got stuck." She paused, curling into Parker, twining their legs together. When had she started shivering? "We got stuck because of Holo. She's the DRK Triad agent I interrogated with Lulu after Meteno."

maisey tends to put up somewhat of a fight when someone new tries to crawl into parker's bed, but not nomi. either the damn dog is too sleepy to do anything about it, genuinely likes nomi, or nomes is small enough not to bother her (all of which are highly likely), parker doesn't know. but it's still a nice enough thought to make her lips quirk as nomi snuggles up against her.

"yea, i remember," parker says; that blissful smile on her face becomes a bit more strained. she doesn't really like reliving her bad memories and dealing with yumi on top of the whole reliving her worst memories ever didn't really make her jazzed to go back in.

she thought (still does think) nomi's fascination with it was crazy.

nomi doesn't notice she's started shivering, but parker does. with nomi all tucked against her, she can't see the expression on her face. but she looks down, chin grazing the crest of nomi's head, and tightens her arm protectively around her side.

anxiety rises. her stomach does a couple of flips. usually any time the DRK triad shows up, shit goes sideways. and usually in a bad way. a people get hurt kinda way. nomi's here in one piece, rattled, but...no, isaac must be okay. nomi would be inconsolable if he wasn't.

"she's the hot one you showed me a pic of, yeah? i remember." she chews the inside of her cheek. "she hurt you? i gotta beat her ass up? fuck, nomes, you're shakin' like a dog in heat."

"Am I?" She asked distractedly, not even registering the comment about "the hot one" (something that might have caused a surge of irrational jealousy once), brain working overtime to desperately find the right words to explain things she didn't know how to explain...which was an entirely new conundrum for a brain like Nomi's, so accustomed to working out the kinks of various scientific quandaries, translate them for the average listener. For what felt like the first time in her life, she was...struggling to think logically.[break][break]
Parker's concern did make it through, however, and Nomi's cheeks warmed against the other woman's bare skin as she was held tighter - possessiveness layered beneath protectiveness wrapped-up in tenderness. Nomi nuzzled her nose into Parker's neck.[break][break]
"She tried to hurt us. She was looking for me, but found both of us unexpectedly - and Parker, she knew Isaac. Called him Blackjack, his Rocket codename. She said she's...they've...had to eliminate him across multiple realities - "[break][break]
She floundered. It sounded ridiculous, even though it had rung true at the time: a thing Nomi had long suspected but hadn't had proof of.[break][break]
Something occurred to her. Something important she needed to clarify before continuing.[break][break]
"But don't worry, he's alive. He made it out with me. I don't know where he is now, but when we parted, he was uninjured."[break][break]
She took a deep breath. Needed to remember those. Breathing was important.[break][break]
"Anyway, she wanted to stop me from becoming the Architect. An Avatar. You know...like Cillian, sort of."

across multiple realities. part of being with nomi is having to bear the astronomically ridiculous bullshit she wants to sink herself into. the look in her eyes is cute when she talks about it, sure, but parker's convinced she doesn't really understand just how badly this is going to end up fucking her.

parker used to chase fantasies in the park during her jogs. it was fun, at first, thinking about owning a candy shop or some bullshit with nomi and only doing domestic things. like running a business and cooking and cleaning and eating and vacationing (but not too often, because vacationing is expensive) and all the lewd acts they can manage in between.

but whatever hope she'd had for a normal life was gone when...well, she doesn't really know when. not when she first laid eyes on her, but sometime after that. sometime through the falling, as it crept up on her, and - her nose scrunches. a headache teases her temples.

she scatters the thoughts.

parker shudders. it's good to know isaac's okay, but at the mention of cillian, parker's anxiety gets the better of her. she tucks her chin against nomi's head and squeezes their entwined legs tighter.

"can't fault her for that, can i? avatars are fuckin' scary, cupcake. cillian's fuckin' scary. 'm just glad you 'n isaac got outta there."

She couldn't blame Parker for that opinion, not really. Cillian Quinn had tortured her, frightened her so badly she still had nightmares about it. It had been a cruel irony, a routine Rocket interrogation based on a misunderstanding Nomi herself had believed out of jealousy. So it shouldn't have surprised her, shouldn't have gutted her, to hear Parker disparage Avatars. Her primary experience with one had been terrible. It was a logical conclusion to draw, a natural reaction to have.[break][break]
But Nomi wasn't in a logical headspace, and Nomi wasn't even remotely okay.[break][break]
She pulled away, leaned back so she could look Parker in the face. Eyes brimming with tears, she trembled.[break][break]
"Parker, I would never hurt you," Nomi insisted, agonized. "Please believe me."[break][break]
But how do you know? The insidious voice of doubt hissed in the back of her mind. You have no idea what they did to you.[break][break]
This wasn't how it happened. There were no notes about a Visionary in the field notebook she'd recovered at the Ancient Tomb. She had no memories, vague though they were, of interfacing with the Unown in their collective dream of Galar. She and Parker had been...together, in the best possible way: the star-crossed lovers romance-story-to-end-all-romance-stories sort of way. A ring, a white dress, and a strawberry cake she could still taste on the tip of her tongue.[break][break]
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks, fearful of the inevitability of abandonment, eyes begging for forgiveness.[break][break]

chalk it up to it being somewhere around 4am and with nomi in her arms, despite the situation, she could quite easily doze off. or some part of her that just doesn't want to admit to the truth after seeing nomi's eyes, but she still doesn't piece it together.

that is, until nomi looks down at her with smarting eyes and a promise that she would never hurt her. and alarm bells are ringing while parker's brows furrow in confusion, hands moving up of their own volition to cradle her face and tell her of course not, silly, why would ya'ever hurt me? but the words don't come out because she is realizing it.

her eyes. the blue unown is a new unown. and holo wanted to stop her from...

"fuck." it's on accident. she doesn't mean to say it. it's made better by the fact that she doesn't flinch, at least. just blinks a few times and thumbs nomi's cheeks, brushing stray tears.
