a few days ago, someone had been battling in rusturf tunnel when a wall had collapsed, revealing a brand new tunnel no one knew even existed until that exact moment. a few hours later, investigation had revealed it was an archaeological goldmine, some ancient person's stash of treasures and other goods. a day later, researchers began to flock to the area, tearing up the tunnels in the hopes of finding something even bigger, even better.

about two hours ago, nikola heard of the site. about twenty minutes ago, they arrived in an air taxi, eager to assist in the digging. most of the original discovery had been sorted and appraised by now, but there were still things here and there that suggested the pocket might run deeper than expected. they'd brought pokemon along that they hoped would help.

before they can get to work, though... their clumsy feet manage to catch on someone else already working on digging, and they fall forward into the other person.

While it may have been just a standard cave to some people, the excitement of a new scientific discovery turned it into something marvelous, especially for Seren. He had hurried to the Rusturf Tunnel as fast as he could once he heard the news, now searching for artifacts of his own with the help of his Heracross. Armed with a small dust brush, a flashlight, and a magnifying glass, the dark-haired man pointed out a specific area to the towering blue beetle at his side. [break][break]

"Could you scoop out a little more right there, buddy?" he asked, blinking over at the Pokémon. Heracross vibrated his wings a little from beneath the wing covers and dipped his head, using the prongs at the tip of his horn to dig into the dirt. Seren watched carefully to make sure the beetle didn't go too far when someone tripped over his kneeling form, crashing into the two of them. Heracross's horn was shoved further into the rubble as the Bug-type chittered his mandibles in a hiss. [break][break]

Seren righted himself now, looking around, bewildered, only to see a purple-haired person getting up from the ground. "Oh, goodness, are you okay?" He helped them up, getting to his feet with them. "There's some uneven ground in here, careful!" A noise caught his attention behind him and he spun, only to see poor Heracross struggling to get his horn out of the wall.[break][break]

"Heracross! Wait a second, I'll help--" He stepped over to his partner's side and grabbed the base of his horn, slowly wiggling it back and forth. "Easy now...Uh, hey--?" He looked up at the other person. "Do you think you could get on his other side and help get him out?"

nikola stands and straightens themself up. thankfully, they avoided injury when they took that tumble. it seems this heracross wasn't so fortunate, having been wedged firmly into the wall it was digging at. nikola blinks and then rips off a smart salute. "yessir!"

they take gentle hold of the heracross's other side, marveling at its sleek, shiny carapace. carefully, without using too much force, nikola wiggles the base of its horn in tandem with seren. it comes loose gradually, the heracross now freed from the wall. the wall, on the other hand, seems like it may not survive the incident... and promptly starts to fall apart, kicking up dirt everywhere. nikola coughs, waving the dirt away from their face.

what's been revealed is a small tunnel, just big enough to crawl through. there's nothing but darkness on the other side, but nikola's curiosity is piqued. they pull a pokeball out and release their quilava, requesting that he flare up to shed light on the tunnel. it's still dark, but... is that something glimmering on the other side?

"...fascinating! it seems our little accident may have revealed a hidden passageway!"

Heracross pulled free from the wall and Seren released a relieved sigh, patting the beetle on the back. "You alright there, pal?" Before the Pokémon could respond, the wall crumbled before their eyes, kicking up more dirt, dust, and rubble. He coughed and covered his eyes, swiping away the dust before peering into the hole that had been left.[break][break]

"Oh, wow!" What sheer luck, a new tunnel to explore! The new person released a lovely Quilava into the passageway, instructing it to light up the area. Fascinated by what he was seeing, Seren stepped into the tunnel before remembering his manners. "Oh! Uh, thank you for your help," he said, turning back towards his new excavating companion with a smile. "I'm Seren, what's your name? And you have a beautiful Quilava by the way, very healthy flame production." Over the person's shoulder, he noticed Heracross squinting his beady eyes at the mustelid Pokémon. With a quiet chuckle, he shook his head and added, "...I don't think Heracross is too much of a fan, though."[break][break]

Quilava shed enough light that there was indeed a glimmer of something deeper within the tunnel. Furrowing his brow, Seren moved in closer to get a better look. "What is that...?"

at the compliment, flammula blazes brighter. if he were human, he'd be puffing his chest out right now. "nikola!" nikola says, introducing themself. they peer further into the tunnel, but it's small enough that they have to crouch down just to see through the darkness... the glimmer in there could be anything. it could be precious metals, or jewels, or even a pokemon, hiding away.

they get down on their hands and knees. without further ado, they clamber over the fallen rocks and head into the tunnel. "there's only one way to find out, right?" they call over their shoulder. with a small huff, sounding awfully like a sigh of exasperation, their quilava follows after them. it casts a backwards glance at seren, as if asking, are you coming?

nikola continues to crawl until they come out on the other side. it's a cramped journey, but worth it when flammula's flame lights up what seems to be a cache of small treasures. personal trinkets and toys are glittering there in the dark. they look just as old as everything else in the cave-- maybe even older.

"Nice to meet you, Nikola," he said, shifting back against the tunnel wall to allow them to pass. He chuckled as the Quilava gave him an impatient look, and motioned for Heracross to follow as he went after Nikola. It was a bit of a tight squeeze into the second cavern, but once he stepped through, the light glittering off the various artifacts nearly took his breath away. "Incredible..." he whispered, hardly daring to speak aloud for fear of somehow disturbing their find. Without pulling his eyes away, he added, "What do you suppose we do with all of this?"[break][break]
