[attr="class","text"] The longer the days stretched on, the more thinned out he feels. It's to be expected, of course. But the constant back and forth grows taxing. And with each return to the shores, the less he can avoid the water itself.[break][break]

He has little aquatic fortitude, but he stands on the flat expanse of the boat's deck anyway as it presses forward toward the island again. A brief fall break sends it forward with refreshed resources.[break][break]

Hermes, his pidgeot, is perched on the rail of the ship's side - waiting for the moment where they can actually take off. But Lam is waiting for the proper dispatch. Until then, he's here to play support for the crew. With no immediately threat in sight yet, he stoops with a full restore in hand to a leafeon resting by his ankles.[break][break]

He's not the only one that needs more than a little r&r after this is all said and done.

[attr="class","beckmain"]the water is his domain but it is one of peace and solitude, not war and violence, so his disposition reflects no enjoyment from these fights. this is simply what is required of him as one of rocket's underboss.

battle commences on one of the many league vessels; just not the one lam logan is currently on. lilycove's gym leader will have to respond should he wish to.

until then, theo is focused on seizing this vessel, leading the charge with his banette and malamar, the former quickly MEGA EVOLVING.

The sound of distant clashing comprises the backtrack of their voyage, but it is the sound of closer impact and the sudden crackle of a voice requesting aid in his ear that pulls him to the ship rail.[break][break]
“Backup on the way,” he replies into the communicator as he scoops up the small leafeon under an arm and gets moving.[break][break]
His hand finds the keystone embedded in the flying goggles currently perched atop his head. The motion is fluid as he swings atop Hermes’ back (Fig in tow,) and the pidgeot mega evolves before launching into the air, tailfeathers streaming behind him.[break][break]
The jump from vessel to vessel isn’t a long one, and soon he is touching down on the deck of the boat THEO BECKETT looks to overtake.[break][break]
“Can’t let ya do that!” he calls down as Hermes circles the prow, sweeping in at an angle as he blows HURRICANE winds that push against the current to force back the waves that their opposers try to sail in on.

but now, they are nothing more than enemies.

a PSYWAVE is fired up to blast through the incoming HURRICANE, protecting theo well enough. his banette fires off a THUNDER aimed at the gym leader.

Lam frowns, eyes narrowing as familiarity sets in. “Theo?” There’s little time to reconcile the connection as a two-pronged attack breaks through torrential winds.[break][break]

The dodged PSYBEAM drives them straight toward the crack of THUNDER. His pidgeot shrieks as electricity surges over his feathers as he pulls up to take the brunt of the attack and shield his trainer.[break][break]

The bird twists back, retaliating with a MIRRORED MOVE to pull down more THUNDER on THEO BECKETT instead. “Can’t say it’s good to see you this time.”[break][break]

But that’s just the way it is now, huh?[break][break]

The leafeon springs from his arms and darts forward as a pitched sound warbles in its throat. The GRASS WHISTLE seeking to slow the malamar down.

[attr="class","beckmain"]that's just the way it is—the way it has to be—because on the battlefield they can be nothing more than enemies.

malar slides up to take the brunt of the THUNDER, zapped and electrocuted as its wet flesh sizzles. it whips one of its tentacles up to SLASH at the pidgeot in return.

banette hovers protectively over the malamar, drawing the GRASS WHISTLE to itself as it proves immune with its INSOMNIA. in return, it sends out balls of WILL-O-WISP at the leafon, looking to burn it.

There isn’t any time to be spared for negotiation. To attempt any sort of amends between the two of them. He tells himself he’s okay with that. That it’s just the way this world works. But it’s a lie to say the disappointment is nothing but a bitter taste on his tongue.[break][break]
As Fig tries to dodge, the WILL-O-WISP catches the end of his leafy tail and spreads to a searing conflagration that makes him wail before he rolls. But the burn remains, having reached his hind legs. Lam grits his teeth, but whistles to Hermes again.[break][break]
The pidgeot, having done his best to lift up and away on flapping wings from the malamar’s SLASH lets out another shriek before the BRAVE BIRD descends toward the squid, talons outstretched.[break][break]
Despite the injuries, the leafeon tries to mitigate the damage that pain of burning brings. Photosynthetic energy pulses from the little canid as tendrils that reach for the banette, attempting to GIGA DRAIN its vitality for himself.

[attr="class","beckmain"]BRAVE BIRD finds the malamar, doing nearly enough to bring it down but the slippery malamar persists, clinging on for dear life only to return a PSYWAVE.

as tendrils latch onto the banette, GIGA DRAINING its vitality, its eyes glow purple, but it is not the leafeon it targets.

"i'm sorry it has to be this way, lam."

a PSYCHIC wraps around lam in an attempt to slam the gym leader into the ground.

The PSYWAVE batters the pidgeot back, forcing him to retract the flurrying claw of his talons. In a flurry of wings, though, he returns to the malamar to drive it back with the cut of AERIAL ACE.[break][break]
“If that was true, y—“ the reply falters as sudden PSYCHIC force collides with him. Driving the air from his chest and pulling his feet out from under him. [break][break]
He wheezes out a dry laugh, as if this only proves his point, which it sort of does. “—you wouldn’t be doing this.” Before he can call the leafeon back to him, the pokemon reacts. Fig darts forward, QUICK ATTACK carrying him toward the banette out of protectiveness for his trainer.[break][break]
But the lingering burn wasn’t truly healed and it slows Fig’s pace, and muddies his effectiveness.[break][break]
Pinned as he is, Lam eyes THEO BECKETT intently. He doesn't voice it, but for the first time that day, an actual patter of real fear slips back into his system.

PSYCHIC never fades, not even when the leafeon QUICK ATTACKS forward, failing to realize that banette's typing makes it immune.

he says with a sigh.

"i'm just disappointed."

PSYCHIC looks to break lam logan's arm.

Wide eyes dart to his pidgeot, fixating on how he mangles the malamar. “Hermes, no!” But it seems that the bird doesn’t care in the thick of the moment with his trainer compromised.[break][break]
Another piercing shriek follows and he detaches from the squid to allow its limp body to drop into the surf before he circles around the boat.
Belatedly realizing its folly, the leafeon turns toward THEO BECKETT with staggering steps and springs the same QUICK ATTACK toward him instead, looking to offbalance the man to disrupt any instruction between him and the banette. His legs burn and buckle, but he persists as Theo speaks of disappointment in a way that makes Lam’s gut twist.[break][break]
“You only have yourself to be disappointed in.”[break][break]
Pressure mounts in his arm as it’s forced to bend where it should not by unseen force. His teeth grit, and no amount of thrashing will loosen the grip.[break][break]
Then he feels the crack of bone straight through his system. Light sparks bursting behind his eyes as white-hot pain follows.

with the wind knocked out of him, he struggles to his feet.

PSYCHIC fades in favor of a THUNDER that cracks toward lam.

It seems like he’s fighting a losing battle. No one else is coming to aid this boat, and as he looks around, it seems like he’s given those who were aboard the time to vacate.[break][break]
That’s something, at least. The thought is a dry one, as he cradles his arm to his chest.[break][break]
He can hear Hermes’ cry on the wind as the pidgeot makes for him, and he doesn’t want to feel satisfaction as his leafeon manages to trip up Theo, but it’s there. A smug little flicker though it’s a move that pales in comparison to the throb in his own bones.[break][break]
In one last burst of speed, Fig uses QUICK ATTACK a third time over, though without the intent of the offensive. Instead, the leafeon darts back toward his trainer, absorbing the brunt of the THUNDER before it can hit Lam.[break][break]
Strength spent, he crumples in front of him and Lam is quick to recall the leafeon before more damage can be done. His eyes flicker to THEO BECKETT’s as his pidgeot lands beside him, his own breath heavy in his chest. A silent standoff where they are both sprawled on the deck.[break][break]
Wondering if he will allow them the tactical retreat of returning to where he’d been situated in the first place.

Silently, Lam watches Theo across the way. He isn’t fully trusting that he’ll be left alone, not at first. Not after the decisive action the other has shown today. But the subtle gesture is the only thing he seizes upon, and he doesn’t really realize he was waiting for it until it happens, and he’s moving.[break][break]
Staggering to his feet and clutching his arm close despite the fresh wave of pain that nauseates his stomach before Hermes shifts to shuttle him onto his wide feathery back.[break][break]
He spares Theo one last look, lips pressed in a thin line, as he sends the man a mock salute, and then the pidgeot is lifting off and they are gone.
