Ultra Megalopolis - Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon

A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

if they hadn't just willingly stepped inside the rift, marcus would have trouble believing that he and giada morgan are actually in a different universe. it feels like a perfect simulation; the ruined city looks too surreal to exist outside of some rocket scientist's imagination.

he looks up at the strange architecture looming overhead. dark, prismatic skyscrapers stare down at them. a light flickers in one of the rooms far above. they walk down a deserted street until they find an ornate building. like gargoyles, broken statues of unrecognizable beasts guard the façade from the rooftop.

unperturbed by their crystalline onlookers, marcus tries to open the door.

[attr="class","giada i”]bad, bad idea - terrible, really, but she's in too deep to find a solid escape route.

and each day she spends in rocket, the closer she gets to the rug being yanked out from under her feet.

how long until they know? how long until the target on her back burns into her skin?

her eyes meet her partner's and they linger, as if searching for some hint of recognition. she finds none.

"uh, break it down?"

the luxray at her side snarls, its tail slowly swishing - she can tell it's annoyed just by the slight movement.

"wait - actually, I can pick locks."

duh, how could she forget?

a hand snakes into the pouch at her hip and two small picks are pulled out. she steps forward and positions herself in front of the door, picks already lurching forward to begin on the lock. over her shoulder, she steals one last glance of her partner.

"watch our backs. I'll need a few minutes..."

giada morgan stares at him a little too long, looking for something yet unknown to him. there's no recognition in his eyes, only a there-and-gone flash of freshly-kindled curiosity. he ruminates over what she hopes to find, even after she turns away and starts fiddling with the lock. [break][break]"i will," he promises curtly. far down the street, shuffling slowly, humanoid shapes move beneath a flickering light. he feels urgency rise in his throat the longer time stretches. the rattle and click of the lock feels like it goes on forever. [break][break]"we have to move." [break][break] he comes up behind her and presses a palm against the door. it creaks open, but it's accompaniment of swift, steady pound of footsteps approaching them from behind that makes him reach out to try and drag her into the shadow of a pillar within the church. [attr="class","giada i”]his hand settles against the door as the last click she needed sounds. the lock gives way and she tugs the picks away quickly to hastily shove them into her bag once more... just as he tugs her in. louder noises outside, like something out of a zombie movie she recently watched, instill fear into her bones.

her back settles harshly against his chest and she stumbles, cheeks flushing a soft pink. did she step on his foot?

"you okay?"

it's too dark in here - the realization coming with an uncomfortable sense of dread.

"give us a little light, please."

the luxray at her side grumbles and its tail lights up with charge, storing enough electricity to use as a light source. it paints them in a soft, golden light and highlights their close proximity...

[attr="class","body"]giada morgan does step on his foot, but his desire to continue living supersedes the fleeting pain that accompanies her stumbling back against him. the flurry of footsteps quiets, but he can still hear the grumbling presence of the mob lingering near the open door. [break][break]
"i'm fine," he whispers, dismissive. the glow emanating off her luxray's charge illuminates the trepidation lining the angles of his face, makes him narrow his eyes against the light. [break][break] he sucks in a sharp breath as the megalopolans begin to spill into the church, drawn toward the light or the people standing within it. [break][break]
"close the door!" he orders.[break][break] it almost sounds meant for giada morgan , if not for the flash of light at his side. his reuniclus spreads its arms and then claps its hands together, slamming the doors almost-closed around megalopolans trying to get in. bones crunch, but their mangled, broken bodies persist.

"come," he says, pulling away. "quickly."
[break][break]
the swarm is halted, however briefly, by protect. they gnash their teeth and slam their fists against the barrier, but they seem more interested in devouring gia's luxray than them. [break][break]

she's faintly aware of the position they're in - the ravenous undead scrambling and clawing at walls to get closer certainly puts a damper on every single thing about this expedition. she's even less aware of the shrill shriek that escapes as one particular decaying hand is sliced off by the door slamming shut just as bony fingers brush against her skin.

and his voice sounds like an echo in her ears, ushering her through the motions she already instinctively knows: get away, get back.

her luxray snarls as it sticks by her side, backing up in sync with the two as they seek further refuge in the cathedral. the megalopolans, despite their brainless stares and bodies full of rotted out holes, seem to follow the path the luxray takes. it gives her an idea, a dawning moment of clarity in chaos.

"discharge - aim it in an arc above them."

the luxray's tail glows brighter with electricity until it fires off like a flare, the discharge arcing above them and the protect to fall behind the mangled megalopolans. they turn, insatiable hunger driving them toward the light.

and she doesn't wait to watch them devour - her hand darts out and claws dig into his arm to drag him as far away as possible...

"go go go!"

there's no time to sink his teeth into curiosity, but he does find strange fascination in watching the megalopolans follow the discharge of electricity as it arcs above them. his eyes linger on them a little longer as giada morgan digs her nails into his arm and tugs him away.[break][break]
"it's the light," he says in a low voice, coming to the same conclusion she had. they respond to strong stimulus, so they just have to stick to the shadows to avoid confrontation. or so he assumes — it's a hypothesis that will inevitably be put to the test if they want to leave this world. at the very least, the light is more attractive than any sounds he or gia are making. "if we stay in the dark, we should be fine."[break][break]an empty promise. his unoccupied hand reaches out, feels for a wall, then a door. the door is opened painstakingly, then he pulls his occupied arm forward to encourage her through first. once they're in, he eases the door shut behind them and releases a sigh of fleeting relief. [break][break]"i wonder if this is some kind of place of worship," in the dark, the toe of his shoe makes a quiet thud against a piece of furniture — a desk, maybe, as he places a palm against the smooth tabletop — as his exploration is felt beneath fingertips and tentative grasps into the dark. "what do you think?"[break][break]

[attr="class","giada i”]she wastes no time in scrambling forward through the door, her luxray following close at her heels. only when she's through the threshold does she turn her head to confirm he's following her. the sight of him loosens knots of anxiety mildly, not enough to undo them but enough for her to breathe easier.

"i think i see an altar or something?"

it's difficult to tell in the darkness, but she can vaguely make out the shape of one. at least, if it's not her eyes playing tricks.

regardless, with a shiver clawing down the spine, she looks for exits instead of information.

"we should probably head back - this place is creepy."

and she suspects they've overstayed their welcome.
