her eyes fasten themselves to the splintered wall, to the way it fractures from a single fixed point. if she unfocuses her eyes, allows herself to slip away... it could almost look like a distortion's edges. chaotic, swirling energy. she sees it even when she closes her eyes to sleep at night.

"or something doesn't want us opening rifts."

not yet - not when the world is so wounded. the dimensions bleed from jagged, open cuts in their realities. to add more to space's suffering would be wrong.

she knows that now.

with him and his pokemon at her back, she takes a few tentative steps forward to get closer to the chunk of ore. upon further closing the distance, she feels a faint stirring of energy. it's subtle, yet familiar.

"it reminds me of the deep sea."

nearby, with its opening sheltered within a cave.

her hands reach out and she gingerly plucks the piece of ore up from the ground to hold it up for closer inspection.

"i'd need to analyze it in the lab to be certain, but it's definitely familiar to me somehow."

not quite like something out of a dream, but more like she's seen it so many times before that it all blurs together into one single instance.

and with the material still in her hands, her eyes stray to find his.

"should we keep going or head back?"

[attr="class","textbox"]"Sounds like the Triad's MO. They seem sick and tired of us poking our heads around." So far, whenever they were oddities in the fabric of spacetime, they weren't far behind. Sometimes, they were there to clean up the mess. At other times, they were using it for their own heads. "Kinda wonder if they've got a point sometimes."[break][break]

It was clear that he and Illeana's heads were in the same place. The Hoenn region was, to put it bluntly, a mess. Dream mist bled out from open wounds. Other dimensions peered out through stolen gateways for what had been over a year now. Legends, even ones needed and revered back home, flocked to the region like moths to a flame. No less than five different energy sources were being actively wepaonized.[break][break]

"But if they're gonna use that point to call for our heads, they're gonna have to get through me, first."[break][break]

Me. Avatars were always that inexplicable mix of selfish and selfless. They threw themselves into the fray with reckless abandon, but always made it clear they were the ones doing it. Isaac would laugh at himself for it, but he'd always been that way. He could've had two broken arms, a half-fainted Totodile, and a gun to his head, and he'd still launch himself at the Triad one last time.[break][break]

There was no glory to it. Just a love for the people he'd come to put his heart in and a burning need to make sure they would be okay.[break][break]

Illie would need more time to analyze the sample. The lab would be the best place to do it, but who knew what else awaited them deeper inside the cave? There was only one way to find out. "We've got our lifeline," Isaac pointed out, giving Taranza's toxic thread a little bounce in his hands. "If we see something we don't like up ahead, or it gets cut, MUGEN can cover us while we bolt. But 'til then?"[break][break]

A daring spark lit up in his eyes. "Might as well see where it goes."

"if it were the drk triad, we'd still see the dome... it's something else - something stronger than them."

she thinks of pink energy and of decaying ultra space. the instances are not a coincidence, she's certain of it, but could the drk triad be behind such a thing?

she has her doubts.

a tinkering sort of laugh escapes and she flashes a small smile.

"that's the spirit! i'll be right there to stop them, too."

hopefully, anyway...

he sets up a lifeline for them in preparation. and she can't quite deny the urge to keep going, to continue along the hidden path in hopes for the unknown. is it wise? or will they end up in ruins?

"okay, let's keep going."

the only way is forward. mist swirls up ahead, a cloudy cover for whatever lies ahead. she begins to step through the mist...

Could anyone blame them, though? The temptation to delve into the unknown was strong for even the most incurious of people. For the man who broke his chains and the woman who saw her entire universe play out before her, it was downright intoxicating. Were it not for the war, they could spend all day crawling around those tunnels.[break][break]

Naomi Sato would be there too, surely. Arceus, why couldn't that be his life instead of this?[break][break]

Oh well. He couldn't rewrite his history, but he could delve into his future. Taranza continued casting his lifeline out. MUGEN continued to Lock-On to any shadows and sounds that didn't seem to belong. Isaac followed ever-confidently in Illeana's wake, letting himself get swept up in the trail she blazed.[break][break]

The mists grew thicker and heavier by the moment. The little party packed closer together, if only to make sure they didn't get separated by the machinations of their strange, broken realms. MUGEN's eyes, one cracked, the other bright as ever, shone through the mist like a pair of high-powered headlamps.[break][break]

All the while, Isaac peered into the abyss, pondering two all to important questions. The first was what lied ahead. The second was what in the world could be stronger than the Triad.[break][break]

He wondered if the same answer went for each.

[attr="class","illeana i"]as fate would have it, the answers they seek are not easily defined in terms laid out before them. they would have to work for it and even then, likely never entirely figure it out.

for now, they advance on through pooling mist and dark spaces illuminated only by his genesect's powered eyes.

each step feels more hesitant than the last until she's forcing feet to move and legs to bend. she can't shake the sensation that there's nothing here for her... like she's bled this place dry of any information she wanted.

and yet, she keeps going.

"i see something up ahead."

her voice is soft, echoing against cavern walls.

"it looks like it's... glowing?"

red, not pink. her hope deflates a tiny bit at the realization.

[attr="class","textbox"]Isaac could tell they were slowing down. Not every endeavor they set out on would bear fruit, and not everything searched for would be found. For a moment, he was ready to suggest turning back. However, before his resolve fully wavered, Illeana pointed out a glow from up ahead.[break][break]

While she had been disappointed by the specifics of the surprise, Isaac lacked those preconcieved notions. He excitedly sped up to the source of the red glow, only slowing his approach when he remembered he didn't want to leave Illeana in the dust. Not only was this her trip, but she was the brains of the operation. He was just on sexy wrench holder duty, same as always.[break][break]

That said, sexy wrench holders had one other important duty. Like the passenger seat on a road trip, they were here to be an essential extra set of eyes and ears. In this case, those eyes were locked on that red glow, equal parts brand new and surprisingly familiar. For a moment, Isaac remembered those artificially extended cave walls, red sparks dancing off of them where his fist made contact.[break][break]

"You think this is the same kinda stuff as that chunk of ore we found?" Isaac asked. "If this glow's the real deal, we might've found the motherlode!"

"yeah, it looks like it's the same."

her head turns as her eyes scan across the cavern floor. larger clusters of the same ore are scattered throughout the chamber. some are whole, still stuck against rocky walls while others have been chipped away, laying helplessly on the floor.

"larger pieces of it, too, actually. we might find more ahead if we keep going."

although...

"this looks like more than enough, though."

she bends to scoop up a few scattered pieces before turning toward isaac, cradling the ore in her arms. they paint her face with a red glow, pale hair and skin turning a light pink.

"we could probably head back now with these."

[attr="class","textbox"]Apparently Isaac heard "more" and not "enough," because he was already greedily eyeing those shards of ore closer to the surface. Was it really a surprise, though? Tell him about buried treasure or hidden secrets, and nine times out of ten he'd become hellbent on unearthing them. In another world, he'd make a fantastic dwarf.[break][break]

Normally, the lack of mining equipment would be an issue. However, Isaac already had all the equipment he needed, and his name was MUGEN.[break][break]

It turned out, with proper application of Silvally memories, the Genesect's Techno Blast could function like a high-powered mining laser. The initial Ground-typed technique struck the earth, tracing deep fissures around the sites where the ore was embedded. After that, the light of Terastalization shone through the cavern. Blue crystals spread along MUGEN's body, forming a silhouette more reminiscent of the apex predator life he once lead.[break][break]

The Tera Blast shining out from his body flowed like water, sinking into the cracks his Techno Blast formed and continuing to eat away with them. Whenever a piece of ore was about to fall, Taranza was on hand to catch it, bundling it up with his Sticky Web to make sure it was safe and ready to transport. Time after time, they repeated this, gold rush fever lit up in Isaac's eyes.[break][break]

By the time he was done, he approached Illie with a proud grin and quite a few bundles of ore. "Yeah. I think we've got more than enough of a payload here," he said, the red glow of the ores intermingling with the blue light of MUGEN's crystals to paint him a deep purple. "Now let's skedaddle before all that drilling wakes something up."[break][break]

Then again, was it really a proper science adventure if it didn't end with being chased?

[attr="class","illeana i"]she observes as he begins to collect more ore, following the motions of him and his genesect from the sidelines. it's interesting, she notes, to simply watch the way pokemon and trainer work together in tandem. there's nothing quite like it, if she had to really describe it... like a dance of sorts, perhaps.

the dance inevitably ends as all things do and they regroup with more ore than they initially thought.

she surveys the goods with a quick glance before nodding.

"yeah, this is good."

enough that in the event testing breaks one piece, they'll have back ups.

she turns on her heel and begins leading them back the way they came, glancing over her shoulder every so often to check in on isaac and mugen.

"anything following?"

[attr="class","textbox"]"Let's make sure nothing does. Taranza!" The Ariados nodded, scuttling backwards to keep pace with Illie, Isaac, and MUGEN as they retreated. Every few moments, he flexed his abdomen up, firing a Sticky Web to seal the path behind them off.[break][break]

It'd be one thing to leave it at that. However, with a pat on the shoulder, Isaac prompted MUGEN to turn around as well. "Your turn, buddy," he said, the Genesect letting out a grumble as the parts of its main cannon separated. Whenever Taranza put down a web, MUGEN fired Magnet Bombs that nestled against the sticky threads.[break][break]

"These should crash down on anyone that tries to cut through the webs," Isaac said. "And even if they don't fire off like planned, we should hear them clattering from a mile away." Sometimes, all it took was playing around with the tools his Pokemon had on offer to cook up a perfect little scheme.[break][break]

Most of the walk through the cave was fairly uneventful. Bar the echo of their footsteps, the thwip of freshly-launched silk, and the hydraulic launch of MUGEN's bombs, there was barely a sound to be heard. Already, they made it through the passage where the walls first narrowed, their lifeline holding firm and unburdened all the while.[break][break]

That was when Isaac heard the first clatter.[break][break]

"Alright, that's it, time to go," Isaac said, offering his arm to Illeana. Each footstep was faster than the last, the northern winds seeming to swirl around them. Isaac wasn't in full go-go mode, but he was definitely putting his pace to the limits, trying to outspeed the increasingly regular sound of Magnet Bombs crashing to the floor.[break][break]

Isaac sure as hell wasn't going to stick around and find out what was hot on their tail. He'd wait until he and Illeana had made their way out of the cavern, then backed up to get as much space as possible. "MUGEN, hit it!" Isaac said, the Genesect turning his cannon to the entrance of the cave. Just as an unseen Pokemon's shadow started to stretch out, his Techno Blast hit the roof with explosive force.[break][break]

Whatever had been pursuing them, it was now trapped behind a tide of stone and rubble.
