Ultra Megalopolis - Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
[break]

A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

PROMPTS

LIST OF PROMPTS

[attr="class","ynospace"]
  • 5 survive a cyclone of sheer, swirling darkness that siphons all light into them and disables technology that utilizes electricity.
  • 7 discover barely working vending machines that dispense odd tasting energy drinks in exchange for defunct Z-CRYSTALS.
  • 8 explore an abandoned or dangerous building that represents a societal institution (e.g. a destroyed school, a dilapidated church, a powered down 'police station').
  • 9 encounter a friendly megalopolan that has not gone mad yet. this megalopolan has not known a life outside of this ruined megalopolis, having been born while or after the city was reduced to ruins.
  • 10 escort the megalopolan in prompt 09 to safety.
  • 11 risk scavenging for supplies, which include megalopolan versions of everyday supplies (e.g. flavour them as alienesque and futuristic).
  • 22 encounter one or several blacephalon slumbering in a building, alleyway, or any place else in the city. they will use their move, MIND BLOWN to detonate their ever-spawning head like a firework. every explosion will attract danger to the area as they prance about before fleeing.
  • 🗺️ utilize a PARADOX POKEMON in an advantageous way.

[attr="class","textbox"]In a perfect world, one trip to the Megalopolis would be more than enough for Isaac in a lifetime. He'd been to distortion worlds, warzones in the middle of the Ultra Space, and even the boundary of life and death itself. All of these paled in comparison to the nightmare that was the Lesser Megalopolis.[break][break]

The decayed remnants of a civilization long since past, similar to theirs and yet unfathomably different. Its occupants, the same slavering revenants they'd found in the Blooodmoon Ursaluna's swamp and their twisted monstrosities like no Pokemon found in Hoenn. The massive tower that presided over the ruins, at times the only light hanging in a sunless sky.[break][break]

And who could forget the worst of them all, ?[break][break]

Yeah. No. Isaac had already gotten his fill of being chased around by this host of horrors. However, the Blood Moon incident had raised far more questions than it had answered, and El wanted to get to the bottom of them. Considering they'd busted themselves up trying to fight them off, Isaac figured he at least owed them an explanation. What better one could he possibly give?[break][break]

"Just remember. No shame if either of us decides 'screw this' and bails, yeah?" Unlike the Ultra Deep Sea all those months ago, this was an out Isaac offered himself too. He'd done his time. He'd paid his price. He had every right to turn this bus around if he wanted to. "This place can get . . . intense."[break][break]

At least the rift had the kindness to drop them off at the city's outskirts this time. Before them sat a city that sprawled out into forever, dark, twisted shapes faintly backdropped by the light of a distant tower. Behind them lay a wasteland, no sign of start, end, or even the curve of the horizon. It may as well have been a dive into the inky black abyss.[break][break]

"Now, c'mon. Let's see what we can find."

It feels subterranean here, for how dark it is - even as El gazes off into the void beyond. Crystalline lights occasionally flicker in the dark, in the city ahead - but everything else is an inky uninterrupted black. There is no sun to warm one's skin. There are no stars to let one feel as though they aren't alone. No moon to give even the barest luminescence in this strange and ruined world.

After the chaos of the Bloodmoon Ursaluna, El had wanted to know more. To better understand everything that was going on - with the Megalopolans, the Ultra Beasts... And the siblings had both agreed, that the best way to learn more was to investigate where a number of them probably used to live. A city that had seen better days - left a husk of its former self.

At El's side, Bibidi floated closeby - regularly reaching outwards with her psychic senses to keep an 'eye' out for any other presences. She did not like it here. Something about this place unsettled her in a number of ways. And if she didn't care so much about El's autonomy, she'd have scooped them up and left this place a long time ago.

Yet, they had questions - questions she could not answer on her own. And so, they sought answers.

As Isaac spoke, the two would both glance in his direction - and El, smiling in equal parts reassurance, nervousness, and determination, would nod. "Yeah - we don't need to stay if, uhm, things get a bit too scary." They agreed. Bibidi would be able to help in that regard, they figured - her Teleport was very handy, and she could bring the group back to the rift in no time if they had to make an escape.

At Isaac's lead, the group would move into the city - the only real sounds being that of their own footsteps, echoing emptily through forgotten streets. El's gaze was constantly on the move - observing the old and dilapidated buildings that had been left behind. "Do you... Know what might've happened here?" El asked softly. Isaac had been here once before - so he probably had a better idea of the big picture here than they did.

Whatever it was though, it was probably something catastrophic.

[attr="class","textbox"]Some of El's stubbornness had died down since that day in the Deep Sea. Having actually proven themselves instead of getting dismissed did wonders for that. They'd actually agreed to a tactical retreat if worst came to worst instead of reflexively insisting they could handle it, which after the horrors Isaac had experienced was frankly relieving.[break][break]

On the flip side, Isaac wouldn't have a shred of doubt about what El could handle. They'd proven themselves time and time again.[break][break]

"Hey, don't sweat it." With the gravity of the situation sufficiently established, a reassuring smirk lit up Isaac's face. His confidence, both in himself and in El, shone through as brightly as the lights of the tower above. "Even if it does, that's what I'm here for."[break][break]

What Isaac was not here for was seminars on Megalopian history, something his "I'm pretty sure I finished high school" level of education left him woefully unprepared for. His main contributions to academia were looking sexy and holding wrenches for much smarter, more important women (and ) while they brainstormed. That had prepared him for many a situation, but not this one.[break][break]

"Your guess is as good as mine. But judging by the mural I saw in that tower, some kinda dragon decimated this place. From the looks of it, they never stood a chance." He'd taken what he'd seen for granted, and yet something felt wrong. "Wait. That's weird. Whatever this place's damage is, it doesn't seem like . . . well, damage."[break][break]

"All these buildings are intact. I think." They didn't look like any building Isaac recognized. If anything, they looked like you asked a child to draw a skyline. Had he not been in the tower, he would've wondered if these were just solid slabs of Something instead of actual, functional locations. "Feels less like this place was destroyed and more like it was . . . drained? Hollowed out from the inside. But how? Why?"[break][break]

Something howled, snapping Isaac out of his train of thought. He tensed up, hand on his belt, but saw nothing on the horizon. Much to his relief, when he heard the sound again, something familiar rushed past his face. "It's okay," he said, letting go of the breath he'd been holding. "It's just the wind."[break][break]

". . . El. We need to get moving." Any relief on Isaac's face gave way to widened eyes and paling skin. "There shouldn't be any wind here."

El couldn't help a soft smile as Isaac provided some reassurance, the gravity and grimness broken up by a little bit of brevity. With the confidence in his demeanor, the nervousness they felt before would melt away in turn - released with a light chuckle. "We'll watch eachothers' backs," They spoke with a nod, trying to match his energy the best they could. Even if this place was unsettling, the two of them would be fine, surely - they just had to keep an eye out.

As Isaac answered and mulled over their question though, El would quietly digest the information given - examining a wall. Indeed, much like he said, it didn't seem as though any huge dragons had been rampaging around here. There would've been a bigger mess, otherwise, right?

"Maybe... The dragon didn't attack here?" They wondered out loud, glancing around. "Maybe it attacked another part of the city, and everyone abandoned here to get away?" Though, then came the question of where... "Or maybe it terrorized them, and people left as a result..?" Even if it was just something like your cliche of a monster demanding maidens as tribute, eventually people would start leaving, right? "And then without anyone to maintain the city, it began falling apart?"

Isaac had his own theories, too - and the mentioning of something having been drained made them perk up a little in thought. "Like... Something was stolen?" They questioned, glancing in Isaac's direction. Something important, perhaps.

Like maybe even the people themselves; something that Bibidi would suggest with imagery of indistinct citizens disappearing from the streets one by one. "Maybe, yeah!" El mused out loud in response. They felt like the three of them were onto something...

... But, any further thoughts would be interrupted by the howling of wind. Much like Isaac, El would jump a little bit - surprised - before settling back down as they felt the brush of some gentle breeze against their skin.

Unlike Isaac, El didn't have any immediate reasons to believe that the wind was off; this was their first time here, after all. But this wind was an ill-portent - and when their older brother insisted that it was time to move, they weren't going to argue against it. Especially not with the look on his face, and especially not when Bibidi was similarly unsettled.

There was some form of interference that was putting her on edge - some form of static, that was messing with her ability to cast out her senses. Like the equivalent of sending out a ping that never gets an answer. And this sensation was only getting closer and closer by the second.

But even as El let Bibidi scoop them up so that they could pick up the pace down the street, there came a question. "Which way do we go?" El asked, looking for Isaac's input. "Should we hide, or take cover somewhere?" Was this some sort of natural disaster they had to weather, or a living breathing thing that they had to avoid?

[attr="class","textbox"]El had given Isaac a lot to consider. Unfortunately, he couldn't really weigh in on this new information. When he tried to speak, the winds threatened to swallow his voice.[break][break]

Yeah, no. Before Bibidi could even scoop El up, Isaac put a hand on both of their shoulders. This wasn't the time for regular running. This was the time for some advanced running. As Isaac sank down into a runner's stance, the hands on their shoulders faded away, replaced only with a cool breeze coiling around them.[break][break]

When Isaac ran, El and Bibidi would find themselves being carried along in his wake. They would also find that Isaac's wake was all that was left of him. Not even a silhouette lingered behind. Only his presence remained, a supportive warmth that stood in stark contrast to the northern wind that danced around them.[break][break]

Fight or flight? Today, Isaac chose both.[break][break]

It was all Isaac could do to ensure those he loved would be safe. Already, a second wind was nipping at their heels, and this one was nothing like the clear breezes they were familiar with. This wind was as dark as the void, as if it sapped the very light from wherever it blew past. In fact, if El was to pay close attention, they might notice the wind seemed to be blowing backwards compared to the direction it traveled. Was it even truly a wind? Or was it more of a vacuum?[break][break]

Whatever the cyclone truly was, it was coming fast. Even as Isaac ran like the wind, he was only just keeping ahead of it. At times, it was close enough to lash out at them, the northern wind barely able to parry away its writhing tendrils of darkness. Were it ever to make contact, it would seem strangely cold and strangely sharp. Only the lack of rigidity would make it clear that this wind was no blade.[break][break]

It was no good. Isaac could run like the wind, but he stood no chance at outrunning the void. As the northern winds started to spiral into the cyclone, Isaac broke a hard left and ran for the nearest shelter. El and Bibidi would pass right through the shelter's walls, as if they weren't even there.[break][break]

Isaac's chest heaved as he pressed himself against the wall, reforming out from the spiraling winds. Flickering lights overhead turned pitch black in the cyclone's wake, and its roar threatened to overwhelm any and all sound. Only the beating of their hearts would let Isaac and El know that they were still alive.[break][break]

It was there that they'd wait, the sound of the cyclone slowly but surely fading into the distance.[break][break]

"That's the damndest thing." Isaac's voice was still a little shaky from the experience, but he tried his damndest to bring back some normalcy. "This city's gone. But the people never went anywhere. They shamble around here like some sort of walking dead. And they're still every bit as hungry as those ones we saw in the swamp." Were they always maneaters? Or had their entire people been cursed by whatever stole the light from this city?[break][break]

Speaking of lights, the ones in the shelter they'd taken finally started to flicker back to life. It appeared they were in a parking garage of sorts, etchings in the ground dividing the ground into a series of circular pods. Twisted, broken down machines filled a few of these pods, their forms unrecognizable. They'd been stripped for parts, leaving what they looked like when intact a total mystery. Outside of that, they were alone. It was just Isaac, El, and Bibidi.[break][break]

And the Megalopian staggering towards Isaac from behind, step by lurching step.

One moment, El and Bibidi were preparing to escape on foot - to perhaps even try a Teleport somewhere, if she could also get a grasp of Isaac... But much to the two's surprise, Isaac would be the one taking grasp of them - and in the next moment, they were moving with that of the wind. Carried upon a chilling - and yet comforting - embrace, that rushed around and with them.

Were it not for the dangerous situation they were in, El would've loved to take in every moment of this experience.

But instead, they found their attention drawn to the eldritch storm that seemed to chase after them - a cyclone of pure dark, drawing in and consuming any energy that it could snatch up into its embrace. Staring into it sent chills through them, a deep gut feeling of this did not belong. That this wasn't normal. But there wasn't much that they or Bibidi could do to force the storm back, or get away from it - all they could do was trust that Isaac knew what he was doing.

Which, he sort of did, sort of didn't. It was hard to plan an escape on the fly when you were being actively chased by a threat - but their brother was a clever quick-thinker. The trio would make for the nearest shelter - and though El would make a shout of alarm as they realized they were about to fly into a wall...

... They'd instead find themself tumbling on through the wall, into the safety of some unknown building! For the duration of the storm's presence - roaring outside the walls of this mystery building - El would be laying flat on their back, staring at the dark ceiling above. They, perhaps, needed a good few minutes to process everything that had happened here.

But - in the window of time where the howling winds gradually faded away, before the lights turned back on - their voice would speak up. "Isaac... P-please... Warn me next time, when we... When we decide to no-clip?" They request with a half-wheezed half-anxiety laugh. "I... I think I saw my life flash for a second..." They could still feel jitters in their entire body from their near-heart-attack experience.

As the lights began to flicker back on though, El would finally move - carefully pushing themself up onto their feet. And as they did, they'd listen to Isaac speak in turn - and they would mull over his words.

"... So... Maybe the dragon stole like... Their souls, or something? And they became zombies as a result?" El wondered out loud, glancing to a few of the stripped down machines. Cause really, 90% of the damage in the city felt less like 'rampaging monster', and more like 'wear and tear from noone taking care of it'. "That, or they were relying on something in the city, that the dragon stole?"

However, they still didn't have much of a chance to properly consider things. Because as they cast a glance back in Isaac's direction, they'd see something staggering in his direction! "Behind you..!"

Bibidi would act quickly - reaching out with Telekinesis to stop the Megalopian in their tracks and hold them in place.

[attr="class","textbox"]"Heh. My bad." Isaac bashfully rubbed the back of his neck as El finally showed signs of life. "I think I've been getting a little too used to it." At this point, he had to try not to meld into the winds whenever he moved faster than a light jog.[break][break]

"Still. Don't tell me that didn't kick ass." Any bashfulness was gone now, replaced by a big, cheeky grin.[break][break]

With the cyclone passed, El was all too happy to get back to theorizing. "I think you're onto something," he said, remembering how the zombies they'd encountered seemed less rotten and more . . . Incomplete. "They've been hollowed out, just like their city. But what kinda Pokemon's able to do that? Is it even a Pokemon at all?"[break][break]

Any further speculation died in a flash of psychic energy. Bibidi snapped to action at El's command, pushing back against a presence Isaac hadn't even noticed. He turned around just in time to notice a blue skinned humanoid, eyes wide with surprise. They tried to push against Bibidi's psychic force, but it was to no avail. It was as if their legs were seized in a vice.[break][break]

"They're getting sneaky," Isaac cautioned, reaching for his belt. "Keep an eye out, there might be more of the-"[break][break]

"Those things outside are nothing like me." If Isaac was gearing up for a fight, the Megalopian's words were quick to make him stand down. Nevertheless, he eyed them suspiciously as they averted their gaze. "At least. Not anymore."[break][break]

None of the Megalopians shambling around outside had spoken to him before. Perhaps they were telling the truth. "Then you'd be able to tell us what happened here?"[break][break]

The Megalopian shook their head. "This is all I've ever known," they said, voice tinged with sorrow. "That won't be the last of those storms. They always come in threes."[break][break]

"We need to move while we still can."[break][break]

Isaac's eyes narrowed in suspicion. Between the madmen in the Ursaluna's swampland and the zombies roaming the Megalopolis' streets, he wasn't exactly trusting when some member of the Blue Man Group came marching up. However, he wasn't the only one making decisions here. He shot a glance towards El, curious to see where their head was at.

As Isaac grins to them, they initially try to give him a firm look - as if to scold him - but it's clear to see that they're in full agreement. Their serious expression quickly breaks down into a smile they're failing to hold back, and snickers escaping their lips - all until they begin to laugh, smiling brightly to Isaac. "Ehehe - yeahhhh, I guess it was pretty cool," They respond with a coy hue.

But not long after, there's that familiar light in their eyes as they muse out loud "I wonder how it'd work with like... Going underwater! Or maybe even when other pokemon are doing wind stuff, like using Tailwind!" They'd love to better figure out Isaac's newfound abilities - how far it could be pushed, what it could bounce off of.

. . . But, any more chatter would have to wait - as the two of them had a surprise visitor, in the form of a Megalopian. One that appeared quite sapient, at that! El would watch and listen as Isaac spoke with them - their own expression shifting to one of brief sympathy at the sorrow that this individual showed.

Though, with the conversation came the question - did they trust this Megalopolan enough, to let them go? Because El's first impressions in the swamp debacle weren't exactly a pretty look at how Megalopians are. But as they glance to Bibidi for her counsel, she dips her head, and they nod back. "Bibidi thinks they're being honest," They mention to Isaac - trusting in her judgement, and trying to avoid being biased against who appeared to just be an innocent survivor.

And as El speaks, the Alakazam releases the Megalopian, relaxing her stance. Her attention is still on the Megalopian - just in case - but she otherwise is more welcoming of this blue-hued stranger.

Though that being said, that meant that the other's words were worth some salt. Glancing to the Megalopolan, El offers them a friendly smile and asks two questions. "You probably know this place better than us - any suggestions in where to go? And what's your name?"

[attr="class","textbox"]If Isaac trusted Bibidi enough to care for El, he could trust her enough to respect her judgment on this one. With a begrudging sigh, Isaac lowered his guard. There was still a healthy glint of suspicion in his eye, but he tried to push it back in favor of a warm smile. "Alright. That means you're with us, then."[break][break]

Despite their differences, both Isaac and the Megalopian had come to the same unspoken conclusion. If they were to survive through these apparently-recurring storms, they'd need to count on one another. The Megalopian had far more of an idea what was going on, while Isaac and El had become powerhouses in their own right. There was safety in numbers, and they had some real big ones where it counted.[break][break]

"You may call me Merola." Their smile was a little too jagged and toothy for Isaac's comfort, but at least they were trying. "As for where to go next . . . this parking garage will do us no good. Any of the cycles here have long been stripped down. There is no light to be found here."[break][break]

Damnit. Isaac wasn't even thinking about having some kinda ultra bike until Merola mentioned it. Now he was sad.[break][break]

"The hospital." There was a far-off look in Merola's eyes, as if attempting to capture a figment of their imagination. "It will not help us escape, but it will help us endure. These storms can last for many, many pulses. There is much sustenance hidden there, and many ways to put ourselves back together." Nothing they said was wrong, but man did Isaac not like how any of it sounded.[break][break]

"Okay. It's a start, at least." Isaac worked the skepticism out of his system before he started shuddering. "And how far is this hospital?"[break][break]

"It is a journey of a thousand pulses and several cycles. Many a time we will need to brave the alleyways so our torpor does not leave us in the path of the storms. We will need to keep watch cycles, for to walk these streets alone is to invite our end. If the storms do not catch you, the lost ones surely will. It may do us well to salvage waycamps to the east as we proceed, where we can rest for several cycles more-"[break][break]

Isaac looked towards El. "El. I'm doing the thing again." Without further warning, he put a hand on El and Merola's shoulders, ready to go go gadget get the fuck out of here. They weren't staying in this creepshow of a city for any longer than they had to, and with the northern winds at his back they sure as hell didn't "have" to.[break][break]

They landed in mere seconds. As poor Merola hurled black bile into a nearby assembly of crystals, Isaac took in the enormity of the impossibly smooth, egg-shaped structure they had called a hospital. Xs dotted it along all sides, the only nicks and carvings along its surface. Compared to the jet black, multi-faceted structures surrounding it, it stuck out like a sore thumb.[break][break]

"How do we-" Isaac asked, only for Merola to stagger up to the front of the building. He sunk his fingers into it like claws, pulling a white membrane away from what seemed like smooth wall moments ago. From beneath it, a yawning abyss greeted them.[break][break]

Isaac could tell the inside would be even weirder than the outside.

Even if the toothy smile did give El a bit of unease, they would smile back to Merola, nodding. "I'm El - and this is my brother, Isaac." They'd introduce themselves in turn, gesturing in turn. "It's nice to meet you, Merola - even if things aren't the safest right now. But we'll protect you!" And that was a promise; they wouldn't let someone else who was just trying to get by in this ruined city be hurt, if they could help it.

It'd certainly be a way to make up for that psychic grabbing before, as well.

But once introductions were out of the way, came the question of what next. Staying here was apparently a no-go; though the mention of light made El blink. Being able to see was important, sure - but did it matter for weathering the strange storm, as long as the shelter held up? (And did Merola mean cycles having been stripped down as in bikes..? The next mention of cycles in the context of time was a bit confusing...)

At the mention of a hospital though, El smiled and nodded. "Yeah; that sounds like a safe place to hunker down!" They agreed - maybe it'd even have something like a backup generator, to counteract the storm knocking out the lights like it did here?

And Isaac had just the thing for the three of them to get there in a hurry. The only trouble was whether Merola was ready for it - and El glanced over to the Megalopolan with the intention of warning them... Only for Isaac to place a hand on either of their shoulders, and whisk them away without any further warning!

At least with the initial heads-up, El was able to remain on their feet this time around - but Merola was not in as good of shape. They would give the Megalopolan a gentle rub on the back to try and help soothe any lingering nausea from the trip - mentioning "Sorry - he's, uhm, more used to doing that on his own than having passengers, I think. It took me by surprise, too, the last time he did that." They spoke in a soft tone, to avoid Isaac overhearing them. "You okay?"

The hospital was certainly not what El had expected for a building to look like, though, let alone a medical building. The round and smooth shape was equal parts less imposing than the geometric shapes the other buildings were, and more unsettling - especially with the markings, and the lack of any apparent windows or doors.

When Merola opened the way though, El was the first to step in - Bibidi close behind, just in case. They'd also let out another pokemon - their Shedinja, Ahtal-ka - so as to act as a scout, for the way ahead. Because what better scout, than a pokemon that treated walls as a suggestion and attacks as a 'please'?

[attr="class","textbox"]"Protect me from yourselves, perhaps," Merola grumbled between heaves. The poor Megalopian was wondering if they'd truly escaped the cyclone, or if they'd simply been swept up in its wake instead. Nevertheless, at the pats on their back, they glanced over to look back at El. "I will be fine. It should not be hard to find a de-nauseafication chamber around here."[break][break]

From El's hushed tones, and the fact that there were swirls of purple and black splashing everywhere, Isaac decided to give them some space. However, he couldn't help but remember his first time experimenting with these powers. It was both great seeing how far he'd come in such a short amount of time and embarrassing remembering how he'd all but KO'd himself from decelerating too fast.[break][break]

Either way, he made a mental note to help the poor guy find their chamber.[break][break]

Ahtal-ka would get an early glimpse of the reality of their situation; the darkness within wasn't just for dramatic effect. The building had next to no light, its white walls eerily translucent as a result. At times, a crystal from overhead flickered to life, casting the halls in a pale blue glow. These lights faded as quickly as they'd began.[break][break]

On the bright side, there didn't seem to be anyone present. The hospital's membranous doors were all sealed tightly, and not even a single groan or footstep managed to break the silence. At times, they would be able to make out the outline of various devices bolted to the walls. Their sharp, talon-like prongs made it difficult to tell if they were medical equipment or torture devices.[break][break]

Luckily, Merola wouldn't have far to stagger before they found the wall they were looking for. "Here," they said, pulling the membranous door open as they had the entranceway. They made their way to what seemed like a large, impossibly smooth wheel, strapping their limbs into the proper restraints. "Push me the opposite way of . . . whatever that was. The terminal should let you do so."[break][break]

Isaac looked over to a blank globe with no buttons, no keypads, and no power source, only a flickering crystal embedded into its top. It didn't even seem to be on. How the heck was he supposed to use this thing? It was like every other crystal in this place; inert, holding onto only the slightest bit of-[break][break]

Light.[break][break]

"This one's all on you, Queen," Isaac said, releasing Sectonia from her ball. The Vespiquen stroked her chin thoughtfully as she looked at the terminal, only to perk up when she saw the crystal on top. "This place is all out of light. Let's change that."[break][break]

Firing the Light of Ruin directly into a piece of unknowable alien machinery seemed like the opposite of a good idea, but the entire attack ended up sucked into the terminal's crystalline power source. Now glowing a vivid pink, the globe flickered back into life. Atop it was a crude image of the wheel, a stick figure Megalopian strapped into its harnesses.[break][break]

After what had been a nonstop rush forward, Isaac pushed the orb back. As if on cue, the wheel roared to life, a rush of gravity pushing Merola back against it. "Yes . . . most excellent . . ." they said, strained heavily from the force pushing against them. "Explore in my stead . . . I shall catch up . . . soon . . ."[break][break]

With a shrug, Isaac prepared to leave them to their own devices. "Give us a shout if you need us, okay?" Isaac asked. "Sectonia here can light a path to help us find the way back to you." Those flickering crystals on the ceiling were able to pay off, big time.[break][break]

Sure enough, the first one they illuminated revealed what appeared to be a simple lobby. What appeared to be floating chairs lay in crumpled heaps, haphazardly buoyed against one another. A conch shell shaped device stuck embedded from the wall, inches away from what appeared to be a room sealed by crystalline shutters. Despite the cracks and gashes running across their surface, they remained unbroken. What appeared to be a scale model of the Megalopolis, hewn from magnetic black stones, lay half-complete in the room's center.[break][break]

One of the few structures to not lay vandalized was an octet of vending machines, vaguely arranged in a circle. What appeared to be a faded Z-Crystal stuck within one's diamond-shaped coin slot. Mischief flickered in Isaac's eyes as he pulled the crystal out, tying a loop of string around its midsection. "Thirsty?"

The hospital was a strange one - but perhaps that was to be expected, given this was an alien civilisation that they were wandering through. Ahtal-ka, though, was not moved by the sights. Instead, they were simply content to continue wandering - occasionally floating through a wall as ghost-types tend to do.

El scratched their cheek a little at watching the Shedinja's straightfaced antics - not that they really expected Ahtal-ka to be much for emoting. They sometimes found themself wondering what was on the bug-type's mind - though it seemed as though that since they had sent Ahtal-ka to scout, that they were content to continue scouting.

Which, though El didn't expect any danger here - aside from maybe trying to mess with machinery that they didn't understand - did help put them a bit at ease. Especially since Bibidi was actively keeping tabs on Ahtal-ka (and Merola, albeit less directly) all the while.

So, El was free to focus on other things - such as exploring the building alongside Isaac. They'd eyeball the different objects - from the odd chairs, to the shell-shaped device that almost made them think of a phone. There was even a little model in the middle of the room - and on closer inspection, it almost made them think of those 3D jigsaw puzzles. Perhaps something to help occupy someone while they wait for their appointment?

What appeared to draw Isaac's attention in particular though, was a number of vending machines. El blinked as Isaac tied the crystal with a bit of string - and they couldn't help but wonder if it'd work the same as with a coin-operated vending machine. "What do they have?" El questioned in response, walking up to see what the machines had on display.

The snack-based machines seemed as though they'd already been more-or-less emptied, and El wasn't sure if they were willing to trust the snacks that remained - they'd probably get some form of alien food poisoning... But one of the drink vending machines caught their eye - and they'd gesture to one of the cans. "Let's... Try one of those?" They suggested to Isaac - an adventurous smile growing across their expression.

If they were gonna be here awhile, then might as well have a little fun trying new things, right?

(Bibidi, all the whilst, would give the two siblings a skeptical look. What - and why - in the world were her charges doing, drinking potentially expired soft drinks..??)

[attr="class","textbox"]And their father said he was the reckless one.[break][break]

"If we don't, it'll haunt us forever." What was worse? A night of food poisoning? Or an eternity of knowing they could have had the Ultra Space soda, but were too cowardly to try? Isaac slipped the crystal into the slot, waiting to hear the telltale CLUNK of machinery processing. Once he did, he fished it out with a flourish.[break][break]

Text in a language he couldn't comprehend flooded the screen, surrounded by a number of symbols. Normally, this would be the cause for indecision. Thanks to the coin trick, such indecision was a thing of the past. Isaac rinsed, washed, and repeated until he had a rainbow of cans spread out before him.[break][break]

in this case, "rainbow" was literal. The cans were color coded, including a few at the ends that seemed to have nothing but outlines on their labels. "You kidding me? These run out of ink or something?" asked Isaac, who clearly slept through that lesson in class. Though, really, would they still be called infrared and ultraviolet in a world where they could be seen? Or were they just More Colors?[break][break]

Knowing how much Isaac tended to overthink things, perhaps it was for the best he was out of the loop here.[break][break]

"So. Theydies first?" Isaac asked, motioning towards the rainbow of colors. If El was going to get the first sip, it was only fair they'd get to pick the color they'd be trying out, too. With their bulky screw tops, vaguely hexagonal shape, and incomprehensibly-written labels, they looked more like Bionicle canisters than soda cans. At least the symbols on the front vaguely looked like pictures of food. Between that and the color, their taste could at least be sleuthed out.[break][break]

Probably.

While El had certainly expected for Isaac to do more than one soda - they had to at least try a few, and he had the whole string trick going on - they didn't expect for him to get one of every drink the machine had to offer..!

Though there were a few drinks that appeared to have been out of stock - given that there wasn't anyone to refill the machines in an apocalypse - there was still a veritable spectrum of sodas to choose from. A whole light spectrum, in fact - not that El immediately realized it, either.

It would be Bibidi who noticed this - able to better percieve the colors that neither human could. She'd give Isaac a mental negatory in response to his question - but would provide nothing else.

Mostly because she suspected that trying to actually show them what she could see would break the siblings' heads a little.

Which left to the two to figure out which ones they wanted to try first. As Isaac beckoned El forward, they couldn't help but make a soft laugh and smile at the 'theydies', clearly appreciative of the inherent affirmation. "You pick the next can, then?" They suggested as they stepped forward, to carefully sort through the oddly-shaped cans.

Eventually though, they'd settle upon a green one - it was one of their favorite colors, so why not? And after taking a second to figure out how to get the screw tops off, they'd take a bold gulp from the can..

... Upon which, they couldn't help but stare at the can with straightfaced befuddlement. This was... A taste. An experience, even, for how strange it was on their tongue and going down. Completely inexplicable. They couldn't even wholly compare it to anything, aside from the fact that it was certainly soda. It had some form of sweetness to it. And it was bubbly. But past that, they had no reference point to start from.

They wanted to see how Isaac would react.

So, with a smile that somehow was still the most straightfaced they'd ever been, they'd offer the can to him.
