A week ago he would've put his hands on any person who was saying what he was now. Today? He just embraces the emotions.

They come freely.

"Then give up, ye?" He says with a bite. "Ye wouldn't be the first, nor would ye be the last." He adds in a bitter, quiet voice.

Before the whiskey hits the shelf, he pours himself a shot. The irony of him judging the customer, only for himself to partake, isn't lost on him.

"I don't do therapy, or talkin' my way ta feelin' better. Ye say we're friends? Ye should already know that."

He licks the liquor from his teeth.

"As for the Princess — check the nearest hospital. Knowin' 'er she's probably takin' up a bed after some idiotic crusade went wrong."

[attr="class","snub-greyson"]He's silent as he nurses a new round of liquor. The bitterness of the cheap booze was nothing to the sour taste already in his mouth, but he found comfort in losing himself, even slightly, at the bottom of the glass.

After a few breathes he.. relents. Placing the glass on the counter, King twitches his nose and turns away from his kid and looks at Mei.

"Xen'll do most of it, but—" he starts, before hesitating. The next few words feel heavy in this throat, but he spits them out anyways. "—Thanks, Mei."

He flashes her a week, tired smile, knuckles knocking against the wood of his bar counter. Lingering, as if to say more, he pushes off to say a few quiet word to Delta. When he's finished, he shares a look with the Lucario that was her shadow, before finally moving to the elevator.

Even when he exits, crestfallen footfalls leading to his bedroom, he just barely stops the tears that threaten to fall.

Safe beneath the covers and behind closed doors, he loses that fight too.

She watched him stalk away, knowing he would hole up in a lonely bedroom meant for two, and it should have felt more like a victory, but it didn't.[break][break]
Mei sighed, took a final swig of whisky, then set the empty bottle on the countertop with a decisive clink. She rounded the bar, sashayed over to the little girl and her Lucario, kneeled before them in supplication.[break][break]
"You know me, right?" Mei greeted the child, marveling at the way her hair was the exact same shade of blue as King's. Manicured fingernails stroked the top of Delta's head with a gentle reassurance. The girl stared up at Mei with wide, round eyes, but after a few heartbeats, nodded.[break][break]
And it was a beautiful thing, to wrap her arms around the fragile body of King's precious daughter and feel those tiny, sticky hands against her exposed back, and to think, this must be what family feels like even if King never loved her, even if Freya never loved her, even if all she ever did was watch their backs.
