How many bandages must have been on Genevieve by now? There were the ones on her face, the ones on her arm. The hefty bandage on her back. The beach, she lost so much already, and she was back. To keep watch. Recon. She'd lost Hazel here, thanks to a Rocket member. Among others. She felt so bitter, but the mission mattered more.[break][break]

It's a thought in her mind. One spurred on by her chance meeting with Melody Miro. To take the Gym Challenge on, and becoming stronger. Because losing more, risking more... she was done with it.[break][break]

Those without strength lack the ability to make a difference.[break][break]

Standing on the beach again, and walking next to her Teddiursa, little Orville would look up to her. Genny was so focused ahead, and readied. And beside her, the floating Togetic, little Wright. Both were worried for Genny. She should still be in bed.[break][break]

"Don't worry. I have to keep going." What she needed was to slow down. Unfortunately. Genevieve was stubborn. She had to help people. She had to stop Rocket. She had no time to sleep.[break][break]

That would cost her today. Greatly.

Where Genevieve Cromwell is worn out from so much time spent fighting, Fern is spry and clear-eyed. Coming into the fight late, as bolstered reinforcement, means that they have the energy that is waning within the league forces.[break][break]
Vitality strengthens their steps along the shoreline, sturdy and secure as electrical waves also situate a current in their system. Somewhere above, they know that Tapu Koko is flitting—remaining not far out of reach, but not exactly participating in the fun, either. Not yet.[break][break]
Instead, it is Sidhe who approaches them first, the sableye having split away from their side to scout in their shadowy, sneaky way. She tugs on Fern’s pant leg with earnest intent. Somewhere behind them, a hisuian goodra takes up a flanking position. Lumbering to catch up with the other two.[break][break]
“Show me what you’ve found, little imp,” they coo at their pokemon, and the sableye eagerly complies with a cackle before she skitters forward to lead Fern to their quarry.[break][break]
“Ah, what’s this?” Their voice is a playful trill that belies crueler intent. “A fletchling fallen from the nest.” Fern’s head tilts, fox mask covering the top half of their face, but the slyness of their smile remains visible.[break][break]
“Should you be out here on your own, Little Red?”[break][break]
They snap their fingers in one, crisp cracking sound as they smile. The attack is immediate—Niskus tilts forward onto all fours as the lash of a POWER WHIP unfurls in a sharp swipe that aims to take the ranger’s feet out from under her.

Oh.[break][break]

Oh they were already here. Genny had failed to even keep them off the banks once. Her hazel eyes look on with exhaustion. But cruel darker fox looks on. There was a level of uncertainty. Fear perhaps? She could feel it tug at her, as she takes a step back.[break][break]

"You're und... under..." Why had her voice gotten caught in her throat? She could do this, right? Trepidation hits her wobbling legs, and only exasperates by the POWER WHIP that slaps Genny right into the sand, her face hitting it hard. She had overworked herself. Now, staring down a malicious enemy, she was in the belly of the beast.[break][break]

She takes a moment to try and get up. Orville and Wright take steps around her, to keep Genny safe, the Teddiursa eyeing the Sableye, and the Togetic keeping eyes on her back as she wobbles to her feet.[break][break]

Inhale.[break][break]

"I'm taking you in myself." she holds her Ranger badge out. Her head moving upwards. The panic in her eyes telling more than her failing voice. "So do your worst. I'm going to win." She lies. To him? Or herself?[break][break]

Charging straight ahead, the Teddiursa comes in with a SLASH at the Sableye, while from behind, the fox is bombarded, or attempted to be, by an ANCIENT POWER from the Togetic.

Fern watches the ranger with an air of amusement. “I’m what?” he asks innocently, overly saccharine as she struggles to get the command out before Niskus sends her crashing to the sandy ground. Teal eyes study her from behind his mask, and allows her the opportunity to stand. Though as soon as she does, her claims draw a bark of incredulous laughter from his throat.[break][break]
“Oh darling,” he cooed, smile curling sharper under his mask, “you’re not taking me anywhere.” Wrangled and dragged into the powers that be by this little pipsqueak? That’s frankly absurd. But the more she bluffs, the wider Fern smiles.[break][break]
“My worst? Are you sure you want that?” As if to emphasize his point, electricity crackles from his hands as he curls them at his sides. He takes a step toward her in an attempt to back her toward the water’s edge, and the motion sends the flare of an ELECTRIC TERRAIN that flows out around them.[break][break]

fern can create ELECTRIC TERRAIN or an ordinary electrical field of reasonable size. those caught within the field are more liable to be shocked, revealed, and rendered with the PARALYSIS CONDITION.

Sidhe cackles as the teddiursa SLASHES at her uselessly. Her little clawed hands come up and cover the wide stretch of her sharp-toothed grin. The mischievous sableye’s jewel-like eyes glitter then flash with light before she the shimmering blast of POWER GEM is aimed at the little bear.[break][break]
The earth underfoot begins to rumble near his feet, the old dirt rising up with sudden power. His goodra sails forward, nudging Fern out of the way as he takes the brunt of the togetic’s ANCIENT POWER. “Niskus, retaliate!”[break][break]
The goodra’s tail uncurls, lashing out with toxic infusion, the POISON TAIL aiming to snap the togetic from the air.

Fear takes hold, and bogged down by doubt she'll make it through this, it's in his amused response. That innocence, so sing-song... his innocence, as electricity crackles from his hands, telling her she has no chance. Taking him? The only one taking anything was the fox here...[break][break]

It makes her feel so powerless. Fear grips at her chest, she feels the harrowing edge, the step she takes back another for him to move forward her right where he wants her.[break][break]

Orville doesn't relent, but the blast of a POWER GEM pushes him back. It was like he got nowhere quickly, for good reason. Without Genny's words, he was aimlessly moving forward. Without direction, he cannot make progress. But eyes move towards Wright, and she's faring no better, a powerful, massive foe in the Goodra that retaliates against his mere ancient pebbles, and gifts the Togetic with a POISON TAIL in pass. With no direction, she was easily poisoned, and cries out in pain, feeling the effects of a super-effective attack, let alone one that hit with such strength back.[break][break]

Without Genny, they were unrefined. And her lack of battle experience, compiled on her exhaustion, only showed the gap between them.[break][break]

Can she even do this?[break][break]

Fear pulls the rug from her. She feels powerless. Her breathing starts to get ragged, her eyes attempt to focus on nothing, her mind ensnares itself... and then...[break][break]

The Teddiursa makes a cry out, wiping blood from his head. The Togetic does the same, shrugging off the discord in her, steadying despite the pain. Both stand at the ready. Their eyes move to her. Their eyes meet.[break][break]

"I-"[break][break]

They both charge hopelessly without direction. They wouldn't give up on her, and so once again, Orville goes in for the strike against Sidhe, more SLASHes, with Wright attempts another ANCIENT POWER. Both attackers fight with everything they have. There was still a fire in Genny.[break][break]

They just needed to re-ignite it.[break][break]

They fought for her out of love. They would win for her out of that love. Put everything down for this fight. All in.[break][break]

Tears start to mat her face, ruining her face in front of the Rocket in front of her. She didn't move another step.

“You’ve bitten off more than you can chew, Little Red,” they coo, head tilting as they draw nearer, stooping down to where she’s fallen thanks to their goodra’s efforts combined with their own electrical talents. “Perhaps you should give up now.”[break][break]
They glance at the pair of pokemon who refuse to give up, “Though, they’re putting up quite a fight for you,” Fern muses as the teddiursa and togetic push back against their larger opponents. “A shame you don’t do the same for them now.” How would they respect her that way? If their words sound encouraging, they are not. [break][break]
Pitying, maybe. But certainly mocking. “Sniffling will get you nowhere, dear,” they continue as they move away again, hands clasping behind their back. They don’t acknowledge the fact that this is probably far more stressful for her. That somewhere, deep down, there is a seed of sympathy. But many of their softer emotions have been stifled and buried today.[break][break]
Their nature is a far less stable thing than it once was, and it has always been a touch fickle. They have given into the chaotic tumult provided by their bond to Tapu Koko, even if they don’t fully realize that as the source of their delight in cruel mischief.[break][break]
The teddiursa’s ineffective SLASHES only emphasizes its lack of direction. Her inability to direct the little creature in this pivotal moment proves to be their benefit. Their sableye giggles again, peering back at Fern as they nod. The glimmer of a gem it holds shines in time with the matching stone on their lapel and the ruby grows as Sidhe mega evolves to shield herself using the enlarged gem she bears.[break][break]
Niskus, meanwhile, lets out a shrill sound as the earth quakes underneath him again. The goodra tumbles from the onslaught of ANCIENT POWER, but pushes through it out of a dedication to his trainer, much the same as Genny’s do. Though the retaliation of spewed DRAGON BREATH is far less effective than its prior efforts.

In so short words, the Rocket dismantles her entirely. Hazel eyes emptily stare forward... at the hopeless fight here. The push that they are giving, how much they give off in turn. Genny's eyes are pouring now, and as he tells her that sniffling will get her nowhere... her knees buckle under that weight. The load too much.[break][break]

She should give up. Even so, Orville doesn't stop, even when given such a terrible fighter, even when they MEGA-evolve, and take it with the gem effortlessly. Even so, Wright is stricken with the DRAGON BREATH, the pain still there, as both Pokemon give it their all, every step they can, every push. They would not fall here. Their eyes once again, are on Genny.[break][break]

She can't save them. So many of them died for her. And for what reason? Out of love? Her talk with DEREK HOFFMAN floods her mind... all that good... it didn't matter where it put her. Was she about to lose? Was she not going to have a chance to avenge them?[break][break]

Were they about to die?[break][break]

And then she responded to him before. They gave it their all to give me the world. She stops sniffling. She remembers the words she spoke. "I want to give it back." She whispers, and reinforces herself, fists clinching into the sand, grabbing at it. She was being so weak... this whole time, they threw their lives away. Every one of them. When it should be an equal partnership. This wasn't fair. If she lost that belief... then that was the same as leaving them to die.[break][break]

"You're right." She climbs to her feet. "I've been pathetic." She stares on. Both the Teddiursa and the Togetic stop, both having eyes fully on her. Both of them start to tear up at once. The fight they gave wasn't meaningless. "One day... I'll be Champion. I'll make them proud." She digs her fingers into her hands... and lets the sand fall away.[break][break]

Both the Teddiursa and the Togetic watch on. Hazel eyes meet both of them, one after another.[break][break]

"My dream isn't a mistake. So fight your hardest. I'm with you. All the way."[break][break]

The blast of white light engulfs both the Teddiursa and Togetic, at the same time. Their forms changing immensely, Orville growing in scale, at least tripling in size, as Wright's wings become all of her. The duo together shining brilliantly.[break][break]

The light fades.[break][break]

"Play Rough." The new Ursaring lands next to the Sableye, and throws a left claw out, intent to swipe downwards into the ghost, to dig their claws into the specter.[break][break]

"Double Edge." The new Togekiss follows in kind, racing through the sky, to collide into the Hisuian Goodra, no matter the damage dealt back.[break][break]

Her vision is more determined. She may be exhausted. But for the moment, despite her tiny frame, she could do it.

- A double evolution. Oh baby. The new Ursaring PLAYS ROUGH on the Sableye, as the new Togekiss DOUBLE EDGES the Goodra.[break]
- The real fight begins now.

“Ahhh, now there’s some fighting spirit.” This pleases Fern. As easy as it was to taunt her and cut her down, perhaps it is simply not quite as fun to batter back a sitting duck. Their smile sharpens, eyes gleaming behind the canid mask they wear. On the cusp of surrender, her hollowed-eyed countenance from before was a sore disappointment.[break][break]
This, however, they can work with.[break][break]
“Champion?” He barks out a laugh. “Isn’t that a bit trivial in the grand scheme of things?”[break][break]
Her words must be a helluva motivational talk, though, because it causes both of her pokemon to glow with evolutionary light. For a moment, Fern stills, as do his team. “Well, how about that,” they hum with curiosity. “Definitely a formidable sight, but will it be enough?” Fern calls out next, as they sweep a hand to usher his own forward to clash with the attacks that greet them.[break][break]
Sidhe cowers under the swipe of the ursaring’s claws, but she isn’t the sort to retreat. With another cackle, she pushes back after reeling from the brunt of the fairy-attack. She ducks behind the bulk of her shielding gem before retaliating with a ZEN HEADBUTT—jumping free to aim her noggin straight at the larger bear’s middle.[break][break]
Niskus is not so lucky. He lashes out with another swiping POISON TAIL, but the DOUBLE EDGE from the togekiss bowls the Hisuian goodra over and he topples. Despite an effort to stand again, his legs crumple under him and he collapses, only to disappear back into his pokeball.[break][break]
Fern tuts in disappointment. “Lucky strike,” he huffs before his glance turns upward again from the togekiss. “Perhaps you’d like a more terrible opponent, then?”[break][break]
It is spoken like an announcement, but no big reveal follows. Fern clears his throat and looks up. “A more terrible opponent?” he repeats, louder and more irritable.[break][break]
Only then does the shiny Tapu Koko descend from somewhere in the sky, dropping away from the shroud of gloomy clouds to eye the ranger and her team. “We need to work on your timing,” Fern grumbles at it. Tapu Koko ignores him, a curious clicking sound in its throat that is surely the precursor to some sort attack as it evaluates and builds energy.

That fighting spirit really was coming in clutch now, as she was able to stand. Her legs felt a slight tremble, but there was no way she was backing down anymore. She was feeling so sorry for herself, and now it came back. Grinning now, confidence glazes over her expression.[break][break]

"It will be." she declares. They weren't going down, not so easy. As Orville gets the ZEN HEADBUTT into his mid-section, the bear takes it in full, the impact hitting him with a powerful force, but one that he will not falter from.[break][break]

Wright is luckier, but nearly crumbles herself at the recoil of her DOUBLE EDGE, and the connecting POISON TAIL, leaving the Togekiss barely standing. But neither of them refused to let her down.[break][break]

Genny takes a step forward, eyes on the Rocket. Though luck did seem to benefit the moment, her Pokemon both were on their last legs. Even with that though...[break][break]

She doesn't back down.[break][break]

"I told you. All the way." Even upon the descending Tapu Koko, her hazel eyes do not falter, and though the fear mounts upon her neck, she doesn't let the fear stop her anymore. She takes another step forward.

Orville takes the moment to walk away from the Sableye, Sidhe nothing compared to the foe up above in his mind. The Togekiss flies lazily towards Genny as well. Both acting as her shields. The new Ursaring gets in position to grapple this monster and throw them into the ground, and the new Togekiss prepares a MOONBLAST for the Sableye, if they come near.[break][break]

"Come at me with all you have. I won't go down."[break][break]

She requests.

- Finally finding her footing, Genny declares that it is enough. This is enough to turn the tide.[break]
- As Wright is POISON'd by the tail, she flies lazily near Genny, with Orville even taking the ZEN HEADBUTT, and walking to Genny's side.[break]
- The Tapu Koko does not deter her thinking. She can take it. She's determined with everything she has.[break]
- Goads the Rocket to come at her with all they have. Genny won't go down. Orville and Wright prepare to fight back.

If Tapu Koko is aware of Fern’s annoyance at its delay, it does not acknowledge as much. Instead, it watches the ranger curiously, though its eyes remain impassive. Maybe it can sense her connection to Alola—a home it should know. But this Tapu Koko has not been connected to its home land.[break][break]
At least as far as Fern is aware. When they think about it, they’re still not sure where it came from. If Lesser Megalopolis is truly its real home. Not that it matters right now. The way it continues to stare is not indicative of benevolence for the redhead.[break][break]
“Well,” he trills in response, arms thrown up in a dramatic shrug, “If you insist~” A laugh crawls up Fern’s throat, as they let electricity flow from them, reinforcing that ELECTRIC TERRAIN they had created earlier. Though the mega sableye grumbles a protest as a stray shock catches her leg, she does indeed scuttle forward—only to be blasted back by the MOONBLAST.[break][break]
A crack builds in her gem shield and she titters irritably, swinging the shield to the side as she conjures the dark energy of a SHADOW BALL that she soon chucks in the togekiss’ direction.[break][break]
It is clear, though, that she’s winded and annoyed—sending erratic attacks in the general direction of their opposition.[break][break]
Fern is not worried, however. Sidhe will retreat when she wishes to, and in any case, while her power might be dwindling the Tapu Koko is far from exhausted. Empowered by the terrain, Fern’s patron circles the ranger and her pair. Lighting cracks around it as it shakes its arms in a strange little war dance.[break][break]
The display all a dramatic little show before it lets loose a flare of DISCHARGE at all three.[break][break]

Fern grins again. "All the way." He echoes her words, equally as intent in his desire to see this through. He wants to cause that fear again. Wants to see her run.

The SHADOW BALL does connect to Wright, but she make sure to push it away from Genny. If only because, Genny is focused on the Rocket before her. They are too erratic to make the connection. But Genny is busy looking up at the monster above. Tapu Koko. Orville is ready to tank this in full. Wright is ready to protect Genny. Genny is ready too.[break][break]

And then...[break][break]

The DISCHARGE hits all three of them at once, the ELECTRIC TERRAIN upping that voltage. It feels like every synapse is firing, every nerve is electrocuting itself. Hazel eyes shoot open, as she screams out, both Orville and Wright unable to fully protect her. Pain shoots through the trio. Both Pokemon fall, hitting the ground with the exhaustion taking them both down before the move is even finished. Fainted. Not dead, not yet, but definitely out for the count. As the move finishes, Genny, however...[break][break]

Still standing.[break][break]

Her hazel eyes are glazed over, unfocused and unable to properly look at the Rocket. Everything he had. And she could barely stand. But defiance has her smile. "Told... you." It wouldn't knock her down. No way.[break][break]

And that was the last thing she remembered. Genevieve Cromwell passes out, standing on her two feet in defiance.
