[attr="class","text"] Exhaustion had begun to creep heavier on his shoulders, the longer the fighting continued. Even now, it was apparently little scrapes had been patched with simple bandages. But most notably was the arm bound up in a sling close to his chest, the fracture a parting gift courtesy of THEO BECKETT. Splinting it had done little to alleviate the steady, throbbing ache. And most of the pain killers he'd been given had started to wear through.[break][break]

The shores of the island were littered with skirmishes that he tried to pick his way around as subtly as possible. He probably shouldn't have been testing his luck so blatantly. He shouldn't have even really been there.[break][break]

But still, Lam found himself reluctant to leave.[break][break]

The last thing he wanted to do was leave his friends when they might need him. Or maybe it was just his inability to accept the fact that he was sort of useless as he was now. His toxitricity seemed pretty skeptical. Mac eyed him with those lazy eyes that were usually apathetic. Now, did he detect dubiousness? In the gloom of the fading light, the lizard's spine cast a soft light to light their way as they traveled further down the shoreline in hopes of reaching one of the nearby supply points without any trouble.

Xiura stretched, looking down the expanse of the island’s jagged shoreline, dotted with rock formations and sandy peaks.

She was tired and alone but for her trusty Pokemon. So, in that case, she shouldn’t consider herself alone. She looked over at her Hatterene, who dutifully glided beside her over the sand, leaving nary a trace of her path. Only Xiura’s lone set of footprints dotted the wave-slithered white sands.

“What a nice view,” Xiura commented brightly, though the bags under her eyes felt and looked deeper than they usually were. It had been a long time since they landed here, and fitful bouts of sleep weren’t the rest her body needed. In fact, it felt like her body had been thrown and battered through an ultra wormhole and spat out.

Along the edge of the sand, far in the distance, she spotted a light glow from a Toxitricity and its trainer. She looked carefully, stopping in the sand. Was it a Rocket or a League member? She supposed she’d find out soon enough. Her mask was up, covering her face, and she faintly thought the other would peg her as a Rocket soon enough. Things would proceed from there. She smiled up at Hatterene tiredly.

[attr="class","text"] How nice it would be to finally be home, tucked comfortably in bed. Well, as comfortable as he could be with his arm like this. And, well, given how the call to his partner had gone… Lam could probably expect a scolding from his boyfriend for getting so injured. But he’d been careful! Really! He couldn’t help that he’d been curb stomped by one of Rocket’s big bad underbosses.[break][break]
All the same, it was nice to think about. A warm shower, soft blankets, and sleep. It far outweighed the pretty ocean scenery. He’d seen enough of it in the last few days. But the jostle of nearby movement unfortunately pulled him from his daydreams.[break][break]
Duty calls. It was a dry thought.[break][break]
A tired sigh slipped free as he turned to better face the young woman. The corners of his mouth quirked upward and then fell flat. Masked up, she was unidentifiable, but that made it easy to determine that this wasn’t someone headed the same way he was. “I’m gonna spare you the witty battle banter,” he called out as he stepped toward her.[break][break]
In a beam of light a psyduck joined his toxitricity.[break][break]
“It’s been a long day, I’d rather be on my way.” He didn’t stop to consider that maybe they could’ve skirted one another, a friendly ceasefire, albeit it tense and strained. If he took the time to study her posture and body language, he might’ve been able to figure out that she seemed just as tired and done with the squabbling as he was. But Lam’s trust for the reputability for those on the opposite side had thinned considerably that day. He wasn’t inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt.[break][break]

Little did Xiura know how parallel her thoughts ran to her opponent’s.

“It would’ve been nice if we could have gone home today,” she said under her breath to Hatterene, wishing fruitlessly that she was back in Lilycove City, tucked away in her room above the boba cafe. Nothing chaotic like a faction war, constant battling for one's life, or heavens forbid, an ultra wormhole out of nowhere.

"I appreciate it!” she called back to the apparent League member. “I’ll also try to make this as quick as possible for the both of us.”
[break][break]
She smiled beneath her mask, her eyebrows rising in surprise as a Psyduck joined the Toxtricity. With nary a word, she touched the waistbelt of Pokeballs at her side and summoned her Sableye, Jin. Hatterene swayed side to side patiently, awaiting an order.

“Shadow Sneak,” she said, keeping her gaze on their three opponents. Her Sableye cackled in response, rushing at the Psyduck to attack.

[attr="class","text"]It was sort of funny, how their minds mirrored one another—as Lilycove’s gym leader, he too wished he was back in the very same city. The same notions of domesticity in the same city. The comfort and familiarity of it all. Things that weren’t bigger than the both of them.[break][break]
In spite of himself, he laughed as his good hand tossed up in the air. “Finally! Someone gets it!” He shook his head, a wan smile slipped across his lips. “Peas in a pod.”[break][break]
Kinda funny, that.[break][break]
Lam observed the sableye with curiosity, but made no further remarks. “Mac, you know what to do,” he said instead. The toxitricity moved forward, a spewed GUNK SHOT aiming a slew of toxins at the hatterene.[break][break]
Peaches, however, struggled to keep up with the crafty sableye. The psyduck honked in confusion, looking around as the little creature disappeared from view, only to sneak up from behind. She fell forward and smacked the ground. As she pushed back up, though, she swiped out with a watery AQUA TAIL.

Xiura’s muscles felt so very sore, a fact she acknowledged silently in the corner of her mind. But for now she had to concentrate on the fight. “I hope this won’t impede your weekend plans,” she called out. “Though if your plans were to rest, like me, I think I can can help out.” She smiled beneath her mask. Although she was tired, the unfamiliar thrill of a dual Pokemon battle was re-energizing her enough for a bit more time.

Her Hatterene was unfortunately covered in a mess of toxic goo, and the Pokemon shuddered in distress, trying to shake it off. The Gunk Shot was far too sticky, however. “Psycho Cut,” Xiura requested, and the subsequent slash of purple psychic force flew towards the Toxtricity.

Now that she looked at Hatterene, she didn’t look so good. Ah, she had been poisoned. Xiura winced underneath the cover of her mask, the sudden chill of concern running up her back. That wasn’t good. She’d need her Sableye Jin to step it up. The Sableye staggered back from the Pokemon’s watery attack, but maintained his ground.

“Now, Jin, use Foul Play!” she pointed at the Psyduck.

“I’d be kinda pissed if it did,” he replied honestly, the huff of a dry laugh curling the end of his words. His head canted to the side, though, at her addition. “And how would you do that?” Lam’s brows furrowed together, obviously puzzled. If it was a game to her, he was too tired for that. Fatigue had settled heavy on his shoulders, and all of the playful banter he’d kept up with throughout this whole ordeal had long faded away. He wasn’t all that great of an actor to begin with.[break][break]
But all the same, he sort of wanted to hear what she would say.[break][break]
His toxitricity’s arm lifted in front of him, and he let out a garbled bellow as the PSYCHO CUT pushed him back a few paces. “Keep it up, bud,” Lam encouraged, and the lizard looked over with a thumbs up. In a quick turn, the toxitricity lumbered forward with a quick hit of his toxic fists—the POISON JAB aimed at the hatterene.[break][break]
Peaches, meanwhile, tried and failed to scramble away from the Rocket’s sableye. She let out a flurry of squawks as she was smacked down by dark energy. “Get it when it moves in again!” The psyduck grumbled as she pushed herself back up with a little more difficulty than the first time. Psychic energy weighted the air around her as she pointed her head down and closed in with a ZEN HEADBUTT.

"Well, let's see. If your Pokemon faint, you could all just have a nap together here on the beach." Xiura spread her arms, gesturing at the wide, sweeping dunes of white sand, as pale as a field of crystablooms. It all looked very soft. She shifted her weight, the sand sinking under her boot. Well, admittedly, the sand was very soft.

A nap sounded very tempting, now that she thought about it. Weariness sagged at her shoulders and her eyelids.
[break][break]
"Ah, Hatterene!" she exclaimed as Toxtricity attacked. Her Pokemon staggered back beneath the acute force of the Toxtricity's Poison Jab. Hatterene was woozily swaying back and forth, looking much weaker. If she and Xiura weren't careful, they'd be on the beach dozing away instead! "Hatterene, use Psychic!" Hatterene groaned, straining to follow Xiura's command.

As for Sableye: "Take care of that Psyduck! Watch out for that headbutt!" Her Sableye cackled, aiming a Zen Headbutt at the Psyduck as well, meeting its psychic energy-fueled force with its own chaotic darkness.

But Xiura had no time to chastise the Sableye for taking this battle so apparently lightly, because Hatterene swayed farther, farther to one side and finally lost her balance, toppling over into the sand, unconscious.

"Hatterene!" she shouted in dismay, as Sableye shrieked with wild mischief. Xiura recalled her fallen Pokemon to her Pokeball, quickly turning to see what the League-aligned stranger would do next.

[attr="class","text"]Now that was a thought... it drew a chuckle, the air wheezing from tired lungs. "Fair, but you could do that just as easily." His gaze swept out over the expanse of beach, taking in just how calm it looked in this emptier stretch. Void of any other conflicts. How it was intended to be.[break][break]
As if the mere mention prompted it, he failed to suppress the sudden yawn that crept up on him. "How'd you know I'm a chronic napper? takes one to know one?"[break][break]
Their conversation dimmed from the rising tide of battle - the hatterene obviously struggling under the constant pressure from his toxitricity. "Good job, bud! Watch out, though!" The PSYCHIC pulse was weak at best, and he skirted it easily - eyes sharp as he evaluated the need to make another move. He wouldn't if it wasn't necessary.[break][break]
It seemed not, as the hatterene soon toppled on her own.[break][break]
Peaches, however, struggled to keep up. She collided with the cackling sableye, only to be met with the same hefty headbutt. Knocked off her feet with a squawk, the psyduck faceplanted in the sand as Lam's toxitricity sent another poorly-aimed GUNK SHOT at the sableye in an attempt to cover her.[break][break]
"Ah, Peaches!" His own distress echoed that of the other trainer's. Lam skidded forward and slid to his knees, gathering up the unconscious psyduck rather than collect her into a pokeball. It made the fracture in his arm throb with a nauseating pain as it was jostled, but he ignored it as he pulled her up into his lap with the other hand.

“I wouldn’t call myself a chronic napper, but I know one very well,” Xiura responded, thinking of her Incineroar lounging in the sunlight streaming through the front window of her boba cafe.

What she wouldn’t give to be there right now, she thought as Hatterene lay unconscious in the sand. She apologized silently to her Pokemon companion, falling to her knees in the sand beside her, then looked up to see Psyduck struck unconscious by her Sableye.
[break][break]
Her position was parallel to the League trainer’s, cradling his Psyduck in his lap. She looked at the Toxtricity and Sableye in turn, gauging their relative exertion levels. They seemed about equal; if she chose to go on, then it was a distinct possibility she’d have two unconscious Pokemon to nurse back to health instead of one. She looked down at Hatterene’s battered face, reaching out to wipe away some of the poisonous gunk from her shoulder.

“How about a truce?” Xiura called out, her tone friendly but strained. She and Sableye sat down by Hatterene, eyeing the other trainer with watchful vigilance in case they made any aggressive movements.

Unfortunately, the trials and tribulations of the day and many days past soon became evident as she and Sableye fell into a light doze, there on the sands of the beach. In the sleep-addled haze of her periphery, she thought she saw the other trainer slumbering as well.

When she awoke, the other trainer was no longer there. Xiura could only imagine the picture they must have made, twin unconscious figures on the beach, an oasis-like interlude of peace in the middle of the island war.

[attr="class","text"]“Fair enough. Still leaves an impression,” Lam replied, a short sigh growing wistful at the idea of being able to indulge in something so mundane and nice. But there they were, the both of them left fretting over their fallen pokemon. All of his bravado and bluster from the prior days were long gone.[break][break]
A moment that felt ridiculous, if he were to be wholly honest.[break][break]
His head lifted again at her suggestion, and Lam carefully watched the woman who really wasn’t all that far away. Neither of them were really all that much of a threat, were they? Not like this–that much was for sure. He looked up at Mac for a moment and the toxitricity shrugged, leaving it definitively in his trainer’s hands.[break][break]
Lam raised one hand, fingers curling in a thumbs up. “Yeah, yeah. Truce.” Maybe that would be frowned upon, but he was running on empty. His team was running on empty. Surely it wouldn’t be too problematic if a white flag waved from both sides for just a minute. He was on his way out, after all.[break][break]
Carefully, he collected his psyduck into her pokeball after another moment of fawning over her. Then, cradling his arm he flopped backward. Mac plopped down next to Lam in the sand to keep a quiet watch as both sides succumbed to short lived sleep.[break][break]
Granted, Lam didn’t realize she had drifted off too until he woke to see her there with her drowsy Sableye. Figuring Mac deserved as much rest as the others, he swapped the toxitricity for his xatu. Using TELEPORT made him nauseous, but by that point Lam wasn’t keen on being stopped by anyone else.[break][break]
Finding a random twig, he carved a succinct message in the sand for her before he made his exit–[break][break]

For a moment, it was easier to remember there were normal people mixed up in this. On both sides of the drawn line. And right then, it made him want to go home that much more.
