Oof, ow, ouch, what the fuck was that—

He hoped that whoever else had gotten involved in the little ‘accident’ was alright, but… where were they? Why was he alone?

(And in a fucking dark cave, to boot!)

He hoped he wasn’t going to run into someone from Team Rocket at this rate…

It would take some time for his eyes to adjust to the darkness; but no matter how hard he tried to quash the panic down, there was always this pinprick of fear that was there. Ever present, like a knife being twisted into his gut…

What if there was someone in the shadows, waiting to strike?!

Though his pioneer's path might prove instrumental in showing Rocket where not to step, Cillian is not so lucky as to make it across the unstable ground. He doesn't panic as he feels it crumble beneath him—[break][break]

At least, not until the ALLY SWITCH from his Dhelmise fails.[break][break]

His stomach drops as they start to fall. The grappling hook attached to his SYGNA SUIT would struggle to find purchase in the stone, but the Dhelmise's chain is made of stronger stuff.[break][break]

"Anchor!" he gasps, and clings tight to his Pokémon as it lodges into the wall with ANCHOR SHOT. The catch is jarring, but it saves him the trauma of broken bones as the chain breaks the fall. He dismounts from his Dhelmise, noticing that it had not been so lucky as to escape unscathed. A large crack ran along its anchor from where it had slammed into an obstruction on the way down, and parts of its colony had been shredded on rocky outcroppings that would've taken a limb had Cillian been so unlucky.[break][break]

Recalling it, his SYGNA SUIT going dormant in return, Rocket's underboss shrouds himself in SHADOW MIASMA as he gets his bearings. Only in the absence of the suit's warmth does he notice how cold it is down here.[break][break]

And he is not alone.[break][break]

When his gaze settles on Laurence Anderson some distance away, he assumes Articuno's Avatar to be the source of the chill that makes his breath mist in the air. A wordless snarl forms on Cillian's lips as he steps back. It seems like Lars hasn't noticed him yet. It could be an opportunity to sneak away... but it was also the perfect opportunity to strike.[break][break]

Perhaps fortunately for Lars, the appearance of Cillian's SHADOW DELPHOX would not be soundless. The click of an opening capsule precedes a brilliant purple-black flash of SHADOW FIRE that arcs toward the other man.

The heat is felt before it’s seen—

Snarling in ~~Italian~~ Alto Marean as he turned around, a split-second before he got incinerated by a… why were those flames black?!

“Shit, shit, shit!” he switched, quickly pulling out a random Pokéball and hearing something pop out of beam of red light; another split-second flash and a Protective screen is snapped in place by the Urshifu that takes up most of his space before backing down.

Black flame? Oh, shit, don’t tell me that’s…! he thought in a panic as the ursine Pokémon is forced backwards before the ‘shield’ broke apart.

There was a palpable bloodlust in the air…

Shadowed fire licks at the screen raised by an imposing ursine figure. Cillian's exposure to Kubfu's evolved forms was limited in scope, and he knew only that it was a powerful foe of legendary strength.[break][break]

Undeterred by her foe, the MAGICIAN lets out a throaty laugh as she twirls the obsidian wand in her claws. More fire forms at its tip, this with an ordinary orange hue that seems to draw the eye. The WILL-O-WISPS fire toward the Urshifu, aiming to BURN.[break][break]

Cillian doesn't speak, but his amber eyes narrow on his opponent.

Shadow Pokémon? There are several who have such… but supposedly only one who has a legendary by their side…

Despite their size, the ursine whirls around in a graceful evasive maneuver—his suspicions were right about this Urshifu, for one thing.

He knew that there were two variants—and he lucked out by getting the one that had the grace and agility of water in its style.

Water could put fire out, but could it put out a shadow-based flame? Only one way to find out!

In a bold move, the Urshifu charged forward, releasing multiple Strikes of Surging power, the force of water fully behind it as it tried to knock the Fire-type backwards.

Meanwhile, Lars had managed to recover and was now squinting into the darkness, hoping that whoever this was was not the person he was thinking of, because that would be all his shit luck dumped on him today…

The clicks of Cillian's tongue echo in the chasm.[break][break]

Instructed to hold in the face of her opponent's strength, Delphox plunges the immediate area into a magical DARKNESS. What little light managed to penetrate the chasm itself finds no purchase in the fox's domain, and with the speed and evasion of Cillian's SHADOW MIASMA, she manages to evade the surging strikes.[break][break]

Even Cillian cannot see through the umbral illusion, knowing only that the Delphox persisted by the empty weight of the luxury ball in his hand.[break][break]

The user creates a dark area in which all other Pokemon lose their vision, hearing, and sense of smell due to the darkness. Pokemon that have explicit abilities that say otherwise may not be affected. Any sources of light can illuminate this area but the lighting will be much dimmer than expected.

He hears the clicking noise, and he squinted into the gloom.

“Be careful,” he hissed as the darkness then spread around them and it was like Black 4.0 pressing into his eyeballs; seriously how was it this dark down here?

His suspicions were confirmed as he realized who he was fighting; his mind went back to the siege of Sootopolis back then; he knew he’d crossed paths with this person before.

It was time to… bring out the big weapons. Taking a deep breath, he then tapped the rainbow-colored stone he wore; before a (dimmed) burst of light surrounded the ursine Pokémon in front of him…

As the change took hold and the Urshifu powered up. Hopefully the burst of light would break through the darkness…

The ordinarily blinding light of evolution is blessedly muted on Cillian's side of the darkness... though, as expected, the glow does indeed manage to penetrate that gloam for as long as it lasts. It wouldn't be as bright as expected, but it was something.[break][break]

Enough to reveal the silhouette of the fox as she casts another WILL-O-WISP from her wand.[break][break]

And, sheltered beneath a rocky outcropping of the chasm they'd fell down and wreathed in his SHADOW MIASMA, Laurence Anderson would indeed be able to spot the silhouette of another figure in the fog. Though his features were obscured by its presence, the presence of that power alone was enough to identify the ranger's foe.[break][break]

Like a spider on a web, he waits. Patient.

Where was that fire coming from!

The only way to handle the flames was to counter it with water… much as he was hoping for his opponent to reveal themselves; it was time to fight in the (blind) darkness this time around as the Urshifu attempted to bat back the flames with another series of Surging Strikes from its rapidly-moving fists!

Looks like it’s a waiting game… shit… he thought as he clenched and unclenched his hands nervously; not realizing that there was a little handful of arctic energy slowly forming into the rough shape of a jagged blade as he held the blade out at arm’s length in case something came flying from the Black 4.0 darkness ahead of them both.

This time, the fox is not so fortunate as to avoid the graceful strikes of the Urshifu. The particularly powerful blow nearly topples her outright, a sharp yip echoing through the cavern. It transitions into a growl as the shadow Pokémon bares her teeth.[break][break]

She could not take another blow of such strength. Cillian can see that in the way she falters. But he does not recall her.[break][break]

The MAGICIAN instead turns its attention to the one who commands the bear, a blur of pink psychic energy telegraphing the PSYBEAM aimed toward him. She was trying to steal the icy blade right from his hand!

It was true what they said—about how Pokémon eyesight was infinitely better than human eyesight especially in low light like this; as the Urshifu moved—not to block what was coming, but to try and cut off the incoming Delphox (it looked like a Delphox in the low light) with a surprise Iron Head!

“Oh no, you don’t.”

As if by command, the singular blade of ice multiplied behind him; while the blades were definitely more jagged than normal, they were still made of ice—though not as pristine as it normally would be.

“Don’t come any closer,” he warned the Delphox; and if they were careful enough to look, the blades that had formed behind him were now trained on the other dual-type, following their… every move.

IRON impacts a vulpine warrior built of FIRE, an ineffective tool in bringing her to heel. The Urshifu's bulk standing in her way is what proves more detrimental, though she does not stop. She giggles, instead, a horribly rough sound, and lowers her head.[break][break]

SHADOW FIRE erupts around Laurence Anderson, aiming to melt the blades.[break][break]

From the shadows, Cillian speaks at last.[break][break]

"Perhaps you ought to consider your own position."[break][break]

Though only a silhouette in the fog, careful observation might spot the pokeball in his hand.[break][break]

"Do you think you can stand against me?"[break][break]

Cillian's thoughts are on Rocket above, on how they might yet need him when holding off the League. Though he speaks with bravado, his voice edged with a sneer, it is concern for his family that drives the bluff.

Well, if the Delphox-adjacent Pokémon was going to make this harder for the ursine Pokémon, the Urshifu had several options…

There was a reason why he absolutely disliked fire in all its myriad forms. The moment the temperature began to rise, the more the ‘ice’ recoiled and reacted around him; increasing in thickness and intensity.

I really, honestly, fucking hate fire! he thought to himself; yet kept an impassive face the longer he continued the staredown.

“Try me,” he taunted back.

The Urshifu, just in case things got nasty, prepared to Detect any incoming attacks headed their way…

Anderson refuses to back down. Disappointment tugs Cillian's pressed lips into a frown. Shame. He'd hoped to make a cleaner break, one that would not risk his injured Dhelmise further.[break][break]

But each second that ticked by was time in which Rocket might suffer in his absence.[break][break]

"I could," he acknowledges. "But I don't know that you're worth my time."[break][break]

As an Avatar, an A.Q.U.A. member, Laurence Anderson most certainly was. Cillian's arrogance serves only as a shield for the concern he feels for those above, and his Dhelmise manifests next to him with a soft hiss of seaweed curling around its rusted anchor. It vanishes into the umbral sanctuary of its PHANTOM FORCE, and Cillian's silhouette shifts as he steps toward it.[break][break]

The Delphox makes a solemn WISH for their safe escape.

Even in the dimmed darkness of ‘Black 4.0’, the ‘power’ of light surrounding the Urshifu fades away; reverting the ursine Pokémon back to normal.

He was so cheesed off at how… how arrogant his opponent was; never mind if there were even more darker-colored icicles being summoned due to sheer force of will as he squinted into the gloom—

The Urshifu took a bold step forward; attempting to slam into the Delphox with an Aerial Ace while he sent the multitude of icicles flying—zipping safely past beyond the ursine Pokémon; like missiles coming to pick, or at the very least betray the other’s location should they make contact with the owner of that voice taunting him from the darkness.

(Because even in this darkness still, it was hard finding exactly where they were; much tempted as he was to go for a full frontal assault!)
