He may not have been keen on flying off to other regions to fight off rampaging Legendaries, but never let it be said that Guillermo Chrístian Nataniel Isaiah Hernán Marceliño ran away from a fight on home soil.

Nike was a lime-green missile shooting through the air, punching through fogbanks, bobbing and weaving in between heady waves of seafoam. If it weren’t for the sounds of distant combat and the faint sheen of something Memo really hoped wasn’t blood in the water, it’d just be another day.

He catches sight of a blur in the middle distance and queues into his comms, “Operative Frog Prince to unknown channel. Identify yourself.”

It is only a matter of time before they meet air traffic. And they had been having such a nice flight too. Tucked on the back of their dragapult, Fern hopes that it was nothing, that it would be a blip on the radar—[break][break]
Fern hums as static fills their earpiece. The demand of an opposing force, of course. They consider turning the notch of the device and going dark, but for better or worse, Fern is the sort to toy and taunt and tease.[break][break]
The meowth that likes to play with its food.[break][break]
“Well, I’m just that. Unknown. Toodles!”[break][break]
Rather than engage directly, they curl their arm around a swoobat that had been lazily fluttering alongside, and pick up speed in a furious burst— away from the league operative. In a practiced maneuver, Ceci opens up a portal and they pass through, the PHANTOM FORCE winking them away.[break][break]
Only for the trio to reappear at a distance behind the man on his flygon. Fern laughs, the sound drifting over the wind. Then their hand lifts to eye level close to the lupine mask they don, fingers wiggling in a coquettish wave.

Fern’s voice wreathed through the comms in his ears. Memo sat back on his dragonfly, making a face.

“Who the fuck says ‘toodles’?” he asked, frowning at the purple miasma burst. When the target disappeared, Memo tapped up on Nike’s sides with his heels, and the dragonfly cut a sharp hook in the air and flipped over, putting them back on an intersecting course with Memo flying upside down.

“Predictable,” he said. With a flick of his wrist a Yanma shot out of a flash of light, aiming at the Rocket (he assumed, at least) with an air slash.

They say ‘toodles,’ obviously. Else they would’ve chosen some other word. Fern makes no apologies or amendments for their dramatic flourish and odd manner of speaking.[break][break]
Because, of course, they are too busy avoiding any sort of capture.[break][break]
When the ranger reads their disappearing act, they puff out a sigh—forlorn. But not defeated![break][break]
“Well we can’t have that, can we?”[break][break]
They have tricks up their sleeve. But they aren’t about to use them immediately, it is best to wait for the right moment. Instead, they release their temporary hold on the swoobat and it flutters forward to take the gusty slash so that Fern and their dragapult can shift backward.[break][break]
In retaliation, a blast of PSYCHIC energy rips through the air toward the yanma.

‘Toodles’ makes Memo think of old ladies in voluminous skirts with big fancy hats and lots of cats. Or maybe he’s just thinking of Aristocats. Do they even say toodles in that move?

“It’s just--,” he presses a hand on his Flygon’s back and she drops, wind whipping against his ears, “--teleporting and then appearing behind me? Saw that one coming.”

Nike hooks sharply upwards and whips her tail, firing off a boom burst towards the slippery customer.

Meanwhile, the air slash shreds through the Woobat, sending puffs of fur flying; the psychic, meanwhile, hits Alaclar, stopping him, briefly, and making him wobble like a glitching video game asset. He whips his head side-to-side to shake it off, curling his hind end around to pew-pew off a sonic boom.

Toodles is a very posh thing to say, isn’t it? It makes sense–given Fern’s Galarian upbringing. Never mind the fact that any level of posh Galarian behavior has nothing to do with their childhood in the more casual, slang-heavy Stow-on-Side.[break][break]
It’s like everything else about them–a learned act.[break][break]
The BOOMBURST blasts the pair back with a soundwave that feels akin to being smacked with solid force, but Ceci is a practiced flier, and she flows with the motion, peeling away and firing a spray of noxious DRAGON BREATH in the flygon’s direction.[break][break]
Fern shrugs, “Beats reappearing in front of you again.” They could probably disappear into another PHANTOM FORCE, try the vantage of yet another angle. But something tells them that this guy would likely call whichever direction they came from ‘predictable.’[break][break]
The swoobat shrieks as the SONIC BOOM bursts around it, its ears far too sensitive for an attack at that decibel it hits. There is a ringing in the bat’s sonar ears, an addling in its head that skews the balance of its flight and its wings tilt its small, battered body at angle. But it persists, surging forward to collide head on with the yanma in an ASSURANCE that it will do the job Fern has tasked it with.[break][break]

Memo’s Galarian, too, though he’s well and truly ripped out his roots and set fire to them.

The Dragapult is pushed back and peels easily away, the fade of its tail flashing teal against gray clouds. It pulls a simple loop-de-loop and surges up to spit dragon breath in Memo’s direction.

But Nike is an experienced flyer, too, and she cranks her head and flattens her wings, flying diagonally along the edge of the blue flame. It singes her underside and fills the air with the scent of cooked meat; the soles of Memo’s boots take the brunt of the attack for him, and the dragonfly curls away, thankfully not much worse for wear.

Nike corkscrews and spins, flipping around to dash in close to the Dragapult and lash out with dragon tail.

“Probably. Does get points for sheer stupidity, though.”

Alaclar doesn’t expect the Swoobat to charge straight for him, so the two of them collide, head first. The Yanma is stunned and staggers back, wings stilling, and it drops through the air, falling for a short bit before getting its shit in gear again and curling it’s tail around for another air slash.

They’re a good flying team, Fern will give them that as they continue to circle and loop around one another in their little game of chase and catch. But Fern has no intention of allowing themself to be caught.[break][break]
Ceci shrieks as the flygon swoops in close, twisting herself so that her hindquarters takes the brunt of the smack of the other dragon’s tail. She wheels back to face their opponent’s head on so that she can fire the dreepy from her horns, the DRAGON DARTS a direct launch meant to push them back.[break][break]
Fern scoffs in irritation, not bothering to quip back again. But their fight hasn’t been extinguished yet. If anything, it only riles them up further. “Take out that yanma,” they hiss at the swoobat, who is already worse for wear—battered back by the multiple AIR SLASHES.[break][break]
But it follows the order to its detriment, and flies forward to lock with the bug, an ENDEAVOR to pull it down from the sky, even if it goes down in the process too.

Nike’s tail sweeps through foggy ghost-dragon emissions.

Memo counts it as a victory that their adversary is done with the witty repartee. A small one, but a victory all the same.

The dragon darts pepper Nike’s sides, and arms. One sinks into her throat, making her give off a horrendous gurgle; another punctures through the bottom of Memo’s boot and hits his foot, sending waves of pain shooting up his leg. He grits his teeth until his jaw cracks to keep from screaming.

Alaclar is tackled by the Swoobat, and the two of them go spinning down and down, a shrieking, buzzing, humming mess; Alaclar’s wings get ripped off and the Swoobat’s mouth closes around his head, biting it off and ending his life just as he detonates an ancient power at close range.
[break][break]
Badly wounded, he pulls Nike off with a flick of his fingers against her neck. She falls away from the Rocket, wings closing in to allow them to drop away. Blood drips down Nike’s neck and Memo can hear her breath becoming ragged-- he needs to find somewhere to dip out, heal up, and resupply.

So they keep dropping, dropping, dropping, through cloud banks and fog, hoping the many layers of condensation give them cover and stop the Rocket from chasing.
