War rages in the skies as Team Rocket and the League clash against one another, a full on platoon of each faction crashing into each other to claim dominance over the battlefield of the island they seek dominion over. It would prove to be a turning point in the war for these ruins certainly, but more importantly than that it was a chance to make one's bones no matter which side of the field you were on. It was a chance to establish reputation, to prove yourself amongst your peers, to show your chops and prove you're the best of the best. And this was something Xenon was very interested in as she spins through the skies atop her Iron Jugulis, blasting beams of Flash Cannon and Flamethrower at any passing Leaguer who thought they could take a chunk out of her for free.

Three heads makes for great line of sight coverage as the war machine constantly swivels its head to pinpoint and calculate the optimal targets coming for her, advanced gravity manipulation making for seemingly impossible maneuvers as Xenon and her Ultramodern Paradox rip and tear through the skies with brutal efficiency. There was little doubt that she was one of the focal points of Team Rocket's assault at this point, doing nothing to stop her was the same as surrendering the pure blue battlefield to Rocket completely as she brutalizes yet another League up and comer with a volley of Dark Pulses, sending them spiraling down to the ground where their graves await.

the conflict between the league and team rocket wages ever on. mika knows it's a bitter push-and-pull battle, but the league must be in dire straits to have asked her to join in on the fight, too. on the bright side, the skies are a familiar place to them, so being asked to patrol the horizons near the ruins feels natural to her. it feels safe. [break][break]

and atop her hydreigon — with her talonflame and corviknight flying nearby, as well — mika swears a small flame of determination burns within her, adrenaline and excitement, both, ramping up a notch. then, in the distance, she spots her: a rocket member soaring through the skies, her ride pokemon a terrible mechanical shadow in the form of hydreigon's twin, metal and cold in the places where even a cutthroat hydreigon would be warm. [break][break]

horror floods her features as a pidgeot and its league-affiliated rider spiral towards the ground, severe injuries or even death awaiting them as they plummet below. mika might be too late, but she can't help it: a sympathetic order is given to her corviknight, in the form of a whispered "help them if you can. come back if there's nothing to be done." and the raven pokemon descends, while mika maneuvers her hydreigon to meet the rocket member in mid-air — flanked by her talonflame, all the while. [break][break]

she says, "i can't let you keep doing that, and you just don't seem like the type of person who will be convinced with words alone." she nods at her talonflame, her and the fiery bird splitting paths, hydreigon below her rumbling with anticipation for a fight. "so let's do what trainers do best — and fight." wordlessly, she gives a signal to her hydreigon, and the three-headed dragon opens all its mouths for a tri attack against its paradoxical counterpart. A flitter of black in the corner of her eye catches her attention as a soaring steel knight zooms off to go rescue the last League Ranger she had shot down, yet no Trainer on their back as they dive beneath the cloud cover to the world below. Simple logic then dictated that that probably meant the trainer in question was rapidly approaching her, a hypothesis quickly made into reality as some screeching little voice preached to her about she couldn't let blah blah BLAH!

"Well at least you've got half a brain in there if you know how this is gonna go. Too bad the other half doesn't realize you're marching to your own death already." Xenon shouts with a smirk as she turns face towards Mika, and hey would you look at that! "Well shit, maybe you've only got a quarter of a brain in the end! You're challenging the 2.0 model with that archaic dinosaur!" The Iron Jugulis she rides almost seems to perk up as it analyzes the progenitor it came from so long ago, its first time seeing a Hydreigon in the flesh and sizing up the dark ancestor.

What it found didn't seem to impress it much as it lets out a chirruping scoff, the electronic lights adorning its holographic mane intensifying as it prepares for battle. Steel energy builds in its reactor, cycling over on itself over and over to harden the pure light into steel aspected beams of death. All maws open at the same time as the Hydreigon, the elemental forces of nature crashing into the cold steel of the future. Its a perfect cancellation as the energies mix and combust in midair, a massive explosion forcing the two trainers apart slightly and resetting the field. A perfectly even first salvo.

"Ooh, not bad, not bad~ But don't think that little wild card you threw out escaped my attention." The ultramodernist slaps a Pokeball from her hip and into the sky, releasing her Gengar out into the open blue as he dives down to find that Talonflame that flew away a moment ago. As soon as the Pokeball flies back into her hand, the machine mount is off like a lightning bolt as they start to zip in and out of clouds, firing more blasts of Flash Cannon at Mika and San

mika grits her teeth, the venomous comments from the rocket member stabbing at her good conscience. objectively, there is some truth there: mika isn't an elite battler by any means, and compared to the woman in front of her that's downing league fliers left and right, it seems like a horribly uneven fight. [break][break]

but if the situation were reversed and mika had been the one falling from the sky, she'd want someone to avenge her, too. or at least try. so despite the discomfort and terror filling her lungs, mika continues her fight against xenon, too mired in her own faith to back down now. [break][break]

the two dark creatures meet eyes. it seems that the iron jugulis shares its trainer's cruel but calculative nature, for mika can sense no warmth in its shrill voice. her hydreigon is similar in appearance, so she'd also expect that same sort of callous behavior from the dragon beneath her. [break][break]

and yet, that doesn't seem to be the case. her hydreigon undulates and growls beneath her, his love for bloodthirsty battle accompanied by another feeling. a deeper feeling. as though it recognizes the true danger in this moment, and how when compared to a strategic but heartless duo like the rocket and her paradox pokemon before him, hydreigon realizes how important it is to keep mika safe. it fires more and more tri attack blasts, each bolt of energy colliding with iron jugulis' flash cannons. [break][break]

in response to xenon's taunt, mika says, "not bad, yourself! you should reconsider whose side you're on!" it's not too late for someone to change, but mika only says that as a way to fill the empty space. she doesn't expect anyone to change sides so easily, and instead puts the rest of her energy into navigating the dangerous airfield. but when the opponent summons a gengar to trail after her talonflame, mika shouts below her: "watch out!" [break][break]

and it sounds like an exchange of blows happens below them, too. unable to focus on both talonflame and hydreigon at once, mika has no choice but to focus on the opponent before her. each flash cannon comes out faster than the last one, and san the hydreigon can only dodge so many attacks at once. one steel-imbued energy blast almost makes contact, but hydreigon just pulls out of the way. maybe tri-attack takes to long to charge? mika orders her pokemon to use dragon pulse, instead, in the hopes that it can stave off more attacks long enough for her to locate where the gengar and her talonflame are. [break][break]

Even if the girl was not nearly as proficient as Xenon in terms of pure combat, the natural instincts and talent of her mount was most definitely making up some of the difference as it matches the Flash Cannons with more blasts of elemental energy, Tri-Attacks colliding with the metal beams and creating clouds of drifting smoke through the sky. "Oho, trying to recruit me now of all times huh? You've got some moxie for a baby trainer, you're funny! Alright, sell me on your side kid! Why should I abandon the freedom I've got under Rocket to join up with you stuffy League losers huh?" It might seem a taunt, a ridiculous hypothetical thrown out to make fun of such a ludicrous offer to switch teams, but perhaps she was serious in that moment. If there was anyone who would accept such a ridiculous offer without question, it would surely be the woman who had dedicated herself to evolving herself at every second.

And the barrage of Flash Cannons only grows stronger as Rhodium analyzes the Hydreigon's flight and firing patterns, only just barely missing its last shot as the dragon narrowly pulls back and switches to faster Dragon Pulses to keep up with the machine's tempo. In response the dragon activates its Quark Drive in full as it deploys an Electric Terrain through the sky, a web of electricity pulsing out from the war machine's body. The woman can feel her skin contracting as the static electricity tingles against her, the slight hairs on her arms rising as Rhodium suddenly speeds up, throwing out even more Flash Cannons from each of its triplet heads like a machine gun!

"better late than never!" mika retorts, face flushed with excitement and nervousness, both. but xenon raises a fair question: why should she give up the freedom she has to join the league that has, objectively, more constraints than team rocket? mika thinks about her own sense of freedom, then says, "not many can claim they've made waves in both rocket and league. and those that do are always hounded by their past affairs. you look like you're above all that, so you could do great things there," which is an astute claim, but not one rooted in sincerity. mika just wants to survive this encounter, and if exchanging barbs helps keep her and her pokemon alive for even a second more, she'll do it. [break][break]

but her opponent doesn't let up. the iron jugulis seems to thrive in these dire conditions, and electricity from its futuristic body begins to emanate, moving with increased speed and power. naturally, mika's hydreigon will only get more tired as the battle goes on. [break][break]

so when the barrage of flash cannons come hurtling their way, mika holds on tightly, yelping as the movement of a blast of steel-imbued power strikes her hydreigon straight on — the dragon staggering in the air, screeching out of pain. in a last bid to keep themselves in the game, mika silently grits her teeth, and hydreigon lets out a hyper voice, sound waves blasting from the triple heads, air rippling with static all around them. [break][break]

She doesn't believe anything she says, even a woman as obdurate and unsympathetic as Xenon can taste bullshit on a line that desperate. But just because she's not genuine doesn't mean she's not convincing. If one could get a clear view of Xenon in the mid-air fracas they could almost see the gears in her head turning as she processes this line of thinking, to cause such a splash on both sides of the war between League and Rocket would be a very nice notch on her belt. But more importantly than that, it was a New experience, something novel and interesting even if she couldn't see herself sticking with the goody two shoes in the long run.

And it even seems to buy Mika that precious second of breathing room that she so desperately longed for as Xenon signals for Rhodium to pull back a tad, the combination of a decisive strike on the Hydreigon and the decisive strike on Xenon's ego convincing her to let up just a little. If she were the type to look back in hindsight, she might have viewed this as a mistake as the League trainer's Hydreigon lets out a furious screech of pain from its triplet heads, a shockwave of Hyper Voice slamming directly into scientist and machine as a punishment for this grave error.

The Iron Jugulis lets out a static screech, the energy in the air around them crackles dangerously as LED eyes sharpen and focus in on the screaming beast assaulting its auditory processors, it angles its anti-gravity propulsion ports at the duo and a violent Hurricane rips forth towards them as Rhodium tries to knock them out of the sky entirely.

It is as this happens that the battle below the cloud line breaks through into their battlefield, Xenon's Gengar cackling as he bursts up through the cloud cover and throws a violent Thunderbolt at the pursuing Talonflame, more than a few singes present on his ghostly shell yet none of his mirth lost as he brings the battle back up high.

when the rocket member has nothing left to say to mika, that's when the ranger knows she's a lost cause. even if mika's words had been wholehearted, it's clear that xenon is quite experienced and self-assured, and the raging battle is the only answer to an empty bluff. [break][break]

the hurricane and thunderbolt combination are too powerful to contend with. mika sees the onslaught of wind and energy coming towards her, but her hydreigon feels heavy beneath her — not enough speed or stamina to dodge this attack. she holds onto the dragon's body and reins, bracing for impact and grimacing hard against draconic scale. "san—" [break][break]

WHOOSH! the attack collides with the dragon, and both the pokemon and trainer are sent for a loop. mika resists the urge to scream, and opens her eyes slowly against the plummeting sensations. in the corner of her vision, she sees the gengar and talonflame, locked in each other's space, a wild thunderbolt from the gengar sending the talonflame backward, static electricity riveting through its wings. [break][break]

hydreigon struggles to maintain balance, a serious lack of altitude signaling it doesn't have much fight left in it. neither does talonflame, by the look of things, its body surging with electricity and ghostly energy, alike. fine, mika thinks to herself. nobody said it was easy. [break][break]

deciding not to order her hydreigon yet, mika focuses on her talonflame who is now in sight, and calls out to him with a shaky voice: "acrobatics!" at this point, there's no chance of mika winning this fight, but she calls out to talonflame to endure, until the very end. until xenon has them in her sights once more. [break][break]

It was just never a fair fight from its very premise, the future had been decided the moment this foolish little girl tried to be a hero. A wild fit of Acrobatics from the Talonflame manages to push back Argon a few yards as claws rake into his ghostly hide, but its more than evident who would be the winner of both of these fights as the two Pokemon ready the finishing blow.

"The future was decided, but things can always change." Yet the final blow never comes. A sharp whistle slices through the cacophony and both Pokemon suddenly pull back, Xenon's steady eyes locked on Mika, a light smile adorning her lips. "Come back when you're strong enough to put up a real fight kid. Maybe then I'll consider joining your little powwow over in the League." She calls as she dives down towards the ground, something more interesting than Mika catching her eye down below. Maybe she was hoping for a challenge in the future, maybe she didn't see Mika as being worth the effort to kill, maybe she just got bored, to try and discern the inner thoughts of a girl who was never the same was a fool's errand even for her closest "friends." One should simply count their blessings that they would live to see the next day at all.
