“Well, if it’s any consolation, neither did I.” He shrugged. Whether he was personable or not, Lam had never really considered this for himself before Rook. It had never been on his radar–he’d been content to drift through his life, complacent in a job he hadn’t really cared for. The second Rook showed up, or well, the meeting afterward, he’d finally begun to consider that there was maybe more out there for him. “There’s no one I’d choose, though, but you.”[break][break]
It had been the excitement that jarred him into that push. And the realization that he could actually care for someone the way he did for Rook.[break][break]
He laughed, “Honestly, you still could. You know I’m not difficult to surprise. And what am I gonna do? Say no after I already asked?” It’d be silly, but what were they, if not exactly that?[break][break]
“She is adorable,” he confirmed with a nod, “and very sweet. But she does get a little testy if she doesn’t get groomed every day.” A fact he’d learned the hard way. Pampered, this stunky had become, before he’d even handed her over to Rook.[break][break]
The stunky watched him with plaintive eyes, but Lam only reached over and gave her a scratch on the head. “‘Course. She looked so cute in the ad, I couldn’t help it, really.” His hand shifted up to wipe at the corners of Rook’s eyes. “Always, so weepy,” he teased, before returning the kiss with another muttered I love you— their foreheads bumping together.[break][break]
“Nah, no redos necessary. I have no doubt I’ll like your gifts, because you’re super good at them,” he retorted, rubbing their noses together before something mischievous twisted up his smile. “Besides–” he continued, pausing to carefully take the stunky and set her on the couch to curl up.[break][break]
Only to quickly snag Rook by the waist and heave him up into his arms. “There are other celebratory things we can do instead that are just as good as presents.” He peered up at him with a suggestive lift of his brow, and then hoisted him over his shoulder so that he could carry Rook–his fiance out of the room.
