it's the same simulation she'd found herself in with Remiel Calcifet. she braces for the explosion before ollie tells her to and by the time the lava starts for them, her cyclizar is already spinning its wheels.

the cave constructs itself for them and she dismounts from the drake, leaving it to its heaving.

"i've come this way before," she says, breathless too, and swallows some of the humid cave air. "i think...if we go deeper, we'll find something. there's no way back out without burning in that lava."

she has the same idea as him and so, together they go, absconding into the cave together. it's a far cry away from their false promises of running away from all their troubles, but in this virtual space, it at least gives relief to the thing that is chasing them.

[break][break] smoke clouds his lungs and ollie coughs as he stumbles into the dark space, grasping hastily for his belt. the BLAZIKEN that PENELOPE LIVY gives him glows with embers, lighting the path forward.

[break][break] cut into the crevice of the cave is a WISHING STAR. ollie, however, is no howard slayte. he does not recognize it, not right away. oddly, he feels similarly to the same afternoon that Eva Morales had led him to greet jirachi.

[break][break] "let's... let's go deeper in. they won't be able to see us there."

[break][break] ollie flashes a smile at the councilwoman, leading deeper into the cave until he can touch the piece of eternatus' heart. the crystal feels sharp and uneven under his fingers as he grazes the side.

the cave is not welcoming in the slightest. shadows stretch along the walls. a crackling fire, a slow, crawling roar, follows behind them. she knows, from past experience, that the lava will not reach its way in here, but paranoia settles into the pockmarks of her digital skin.

it's a familiar feeling, though tinged with the artificial, and somewhere in the back of her mind the deep calls her name. eternatus lay waiting out there.

"careful," she says when he brushes his fingers against it. "it can still do damage to the psyche. it's part of eternatus."

she looks at him peculiarly and steps neatly around the wishing star, looking over its softly glowing form. computerized reconstructions, but still so tangible, so very real that she can feel the nausea and unease gnawing at her belly.

"we still don't know everything about this machine. what it can do. and besides, not all pain's physical.

"or are we so lost no amount of horrors we could witness will phase us anymore?" there is a sallow bitterness to her jesting, more than she means, and with an exhale, she steels her mind, wanting to move away from this place.

fernando's home had been taken from him too, but he'd been there. he'd fought for it. still, he'd lost, but that has to stand for something.

she can't say the same for sootopolis.

debris lay at her feet - remains from a blasted-apart building - and she takes care to step around the mortar. blood squelches under her boot. an indistinguishable pokemon bleeds out in the street.

civilians run by, faces dirtied, all of them too focused on surviving to scream. she steps aside as they pass, feels her veins hum with anger.

"no, i wasn't here. but i'll be at the next one, wherever they try to strike next."

"because i had been broken," she says. she crouches down, hovers her hands over scattered shards of glass. her reflection is warped and twisted - half a dozen golden eyes look up at her, impasse.

they are manipulated, forced to behold horrors they cannot change. pain is gone, but fear still lingers in her gaze when she stares down the sharp teeth of the cat that goes to rip open her throat.

i will not be broken again.

even if they fail, even if none of this simulation matters, she does not go down without baring her own fangs, without sinking her own teeth.
