[break][break] The word, for some reason, sent a shiver down the Head Ranger's spine. Despite not having heard it before, at least, not in any real capacity. Ollie was from Kanto, then transplanted to Hoenn, and then had spent a number of years vacationing off the shores of Kalos. There was no reason that he should've known about the nightmare that was Eternatus. The thing that had razed down all the walls of Galarian soil.

[break][break] And yet -

[break][break] Even the word triggered a flash of a memory behind the Ranger's eyes. A flood of poison pools sunken into graveyard soil, the clash of two storming titans in the sky, a battle that had felt more like dream - nightmare - then memory.

[break][break] Suddenly, his throat felt dry.

[break][break] So he's relieved then when the topic changes, back to the VITAL CITY TOURNAMENT and lam logan. Things that he's much happier discussing, because it's much more grounded in reality. At least his reality.

[break][break] "You think?" His head tilts towards the other as he talks of his criticism of the DYNAMAX phenomena. Ollie is carefully to keep his voice light-hearted, despite the rather dark topic. "What do you think, then, that we should do?"

[break][break] "Rocket's probably got all kinds of tricks up their sleeve. Well - though, I guess you'd know that best, huh?"

[break][break] His lips dimple into a smile, easygoing, as if he hadn't brought Remiel Calcifet's most bitter regrets right to the surface in such a simple inquiry.

[break][break] ollie doesn't pretend to know the relationship that his sister holds with this man — or the monster of the man that he's become — but he remembers the last conversation that they held about him. how similar it seemed to the toxic strain of his own with league's favored councilwoman of accountability, PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] "she drives me crazy," he'd told her back then. "but i can't help it. i can't leave her alone."

[break][break] and just like that, Eva Morales couldn't leave MATIAS SILPH alone. they couldn't, not like this. they couldn't just leave him to — to die, or whatever —

[break][break] wordless, Eva Morales conveys something stronger than any of them could hope to convey.

[break][break] and yet. it wasn't enough.

[break][break] "matias!" the head ranger's words rise over paxton concordas's devestating no!

[break][break] with a destructive CRACK, the earth rumbles. the mountain caves in on itself, a flood of cascading red and black. the world fills with the scorching smell of burning lava and neverending heat.

[break][break] before the world can truly corrode, true salvation arrives in the form of hoenn's CHAMPION. of course, they should not have been surprised. lam logan speaks first, and ollie answers him with a sigh of relief. "yeah, that's kyle."

[break][break] and thank arceus for that.

[break][break] but then Eva Morales ascends to the sky too, atop her dragon, her body swelled with brilliant gold light. ollie's stomach burns with cinders, worry tearing through his face like the scars that carve through the earth, flooding with fire. but there's no time to waste on things so nonconsequential. there are things to be done.

[break][break] he stands atop his own dragonite, aching to follow, but knowing better. there is a choice to be made here, a choice he must follow.

[break][break] "we need damage control," he says, calling to the remaining three. "divert the flow of lava away from the town for as long you can, and - " briefly, he looks back to lam logan, he glances at his friend and the half-god that has befriended him. "if one of you wants to come, i'm going down to warn them and see if we can get anyone to evacuate."

[break][break] if he can reach at least one person before the burning eclipse falls down from the sky, it will be worth it.

[break][break] his throat is scorched with heat.

[break][break] "let's go."

[break][break] and with that, ollie leads a blazing path out of the sky with his dragonite's EXTREME SPEED, only hoping that they can arrive in time before the world ends.

[break][break] "matias!" his voice cracked as he abruptly bounded onto the back of his dragonite, soaring into the air behind his shimmering teracrystal. but they were too late to save him, and the volatile crashed into a pile of bubbling lava and a fallen sun.

[break][break] but he did not die.

[break][break] the world is black and white, and the demon rises from the ash. glowing eyes gleam from behind empty craters, just as the mountain roars to life, an eruption on the rise.

[break][break] "get the fuck away from him!"

[break][break] the EXTREME SPEED bolsters both dragon and the head ranger as the duo charge through lava and smoke, lungs filling with the stench of burning flesh, not unlike the way that PENELOPE LIVY had scalded him back in the face of kyurem.

[break][break] stubborn. defiant. unwilling to let him go.

[break][break] filled with fearless valor, despite the cowardly beating of his own heart.

[break][break] "matias, we won't let you die like this!"

[break][break] without pause, the head ranger and his dragon charged at the distorted rendition of kanto's hero in attempt to stop the world before it bursts into flame. [break][break]

[break][break] ollie is glad when lam accepts virizion's offer. one more person on their side is what they need.

[break][break] eyes glimmer like cut emeralds as they look back to the gargantuan beast wreaking havoc on hoenn's landscape. ollie doesn't have the memory of groudon's first rampage all those years ago. ollie doesn't know of the devestation first-hand. it makes him bold, it makes him reckless, it makes him hope.

[break][break] he watches his mega pidgeot chip determinedly at the scorching lava and mysterious black scales. relief bubbles in his chest as he sees his sister in the air, watches RAYQUAZA strike their mountain predator. pop! he flinches at the sound of the devastating ROAR, but his voice still carries strong across the burning sky.

[break][break] "don't give up guys!"

[break][break] the flicker of color is all the lifeblood that ollie needs. his faith in those he loves is unwavering.

[break][break] they're going to do this.

[break][break] or at least ollie thinks they are, they have to, when suddenly the lava bubbles and something bursts and suddenly, he is there, all along but he's —

[break][break] "matias!" ollie gasps, part in shock and other in worry and a tempest of emotions that he has no time to think about now. because that man is not MATIAS SILPH. as terrible as matias could be, this was not him. this was not the person who'd won Eva Morales's heart, who had won the trust of league's citizens as one of hoenn's elite four, and certainly not the man who had apologized to ollie morales all those months ago, trying to mend a burning bridge.

[break][break] briefly, his attention is cut short when paxton concordas and lam logan break out into yells at the sight of their friend.

[break][break] 'alluded to this?' ollie can't help but think.

[break][break] but there's no time for second guessing.

[break][break] the head ranger clenches his fists, joining the mantle of league support.

[break][break] "lam and pax are right. this isn't you," he calls, cupping his hands over his mouth. "snap out of it, matias!"

[break][break] you're better than this.

[break][break] is he speaking of himself or of matias?

[break][break] before he can think on it, suddenly PRESCIPICE BLADES rise into the air before him, attempting to impale ollie from where he stood. before it can explode, however, there is a gust of wind as his mega pidgeot flashes past with a latent PROTECT. a guttural cry of pain rips from the pokemon as it pierces one of saffron's wings.

[break][break] "saffron!" ollie - startled but grateful - fumbles for his pokeball, returning the pidgeot before he can faint, and instead throws another pokeball to replace him.

[break][break] it's pistachio this time, the pokemon's glimmering DRAGON TERA SHARD crystallizing into the air in a heartbeat as it proudly soars into the sky. protected by VIRIZION'S PROTECTIVE BARRIER, the dragonite takes on the offense. orange light glows around his body, attempting to compete with the blinding sun, as he summons a TWISTER to try to knock MATIAS SILPH away from his poisonous patron.

[break][break] "try and get him away from groudon!"

[break][break] because, more than anything, ollie knows this.

[break][break] matias can't survive like this.

[break][break] the head ranger's panicked shouts are cut off, broken into relief, as he watches the blades shatter at the sudden intervention of VIRIZION. it is the first time that ollie finds himself so close to the mythical beast, despite having had enough interactions with it's former partner. as lam logan is left with a choice, ollie can't help the thought that strikes through his chest.

[break][break] virizion is here, so where is MATIAS SILPH?

[break][break] but despite the absence of the elite four, ollie at least knows one thing to be true. he glances skyward, catching a glimpse of something that he's seen in the lab alongside Eva Morales and illeana reyes enough time. mew.

[break][break] matias may not be here, matias may be missing but —

[break][break] one thing stands to be true. they're not alone.

[break][break] matias isn't alone either — after all, if he had truly been abandoned, would have all of these people come to his aid? would they all have joined efforts, threatening their own lives, to forsake his?

[break][break] as the battle surges, ollie catches the same thing that paxton concordas does. it's just a hunch but — "something's on the back of it's neck. and it's avoiding it."

[break][break] he nods towards his pidgeot.

[break][break] "you heard him saff, c'mon. help 'em out!'

[break][break] the pidgeot glances at ollie, hesitating briefly to leave ollie to his own devices, before spreading it's wings and taking flight with the octillery on it's black. it's wide wings cut through the thinning smog, letting out a powerful cry as it nears. aiding the octillery as it is flung into the air, a TAILWIND aids them both to veer closer and avoid any potential attacks that come near. following up, a STEEL WING slides down as it aims to meet the groudon's neck if it attempts to dodge those SUCTION CUPS.

[break][break] back on ground-level, the head ranger stares hard as their pokemon take to their air, body tense in case another series of PRESCIPICE BLADES spike towards them. however instead, there is nothing.

[break][break] ollie glances back, realizing that lam logan hasn't move yet. hasn't said anything. ollie can already read the hesitation on his face before he says anything —

[break][break] he thinks back to their conversation at the battle of dewford.

[break][break]

[break][break] "lam!" in an instant, the head ranger's voice sliced through the chaos, urging him to snap out of it. trying to take them both back to the present. "take the help! we're going to need it!"

[break][break] 'you are important, lam.'

[break][break] they all were.
