or so it might seem.

for how cold and rigid he is, the head ranger brings warmth and light with every budding step. it is as how it has always bene — him, the burning sun and her the frigid moon, two gilded sides of the same coin.

ollie nods as he follows her along the path, well-aware of where they're headed. he tracked as much with his rangers, who'd then reported back to him to confirm exactly what dahlia goode had initially said. he wasn't sure how they'd missed it before. but with everything that had been happening as a result of the recent skirmishes, it only made enough sense.

some things could be put to the side in the face of the greater good. but not this.

because this could effect more than petty squabbles. this could effect the environment.

"have you made any guesses about what's causing this yet?"

"no, not really."

thumbs in his pockets, ollie cocks his head at her. he smiles blithely, and then lets out a laugh.

[break][break] he and annalise henderson have always had an easygoing relationship, or at least one he'd like to think. sure, things had become complicated after her kidnapping, and worse even still when he was forced to inherit her position, but he had always tried to prioritize their friendship over anything else.

Foothill Town.

[break][break] It isn't Ollie's first time here, which makes it slightly better, knowing what he's there to expect. But this time, he isn't there to expect ghouls — he shudders — but rather the investigation of some ruins that were reported to appear by his fellow Rangers.

[break][break] The abandoned town is depressing, but no less depressing then the other reminders of war as of late. After the events of Sootopolis City and the countless numbers of those that had been lost, it was hard to find anything surprising.

[break][break] But he was surprised at the crunch of boots against pavement and the sound of someone's voice echoing in the small, cavernous space — not his own.

[break][break] "Oh hey!" he said, looking relieved to find someone else here. "You must be the specialist they sent over." He stabs a thumb at his chest, and his cap-wearing Pikachu that rests on his shoulder chimes in a greeting as well.

[break][break] "The name's Ollie," he said, offering a hand out to shake. "Some of my Rangers found some ruins, so I was sent over to investigate. You know anything about Draconids?"

[break][break] Ollie's voice echoes wearily in the strange space, emerald eyes dazed for a moment before it settled upon the familiar ultramarine hue of his friend. A hand clasped readily against the other's, relying on the other's weight as he was pulled back to his feet.

[break][break] A hand runs through his hair as he glances at where they've landed up.

[break][break] This definitely wasn't Verdanturf.

[break][break] "Where the hell are we?"

[break][break] Far away, he can hear what he thinks the sound is the sound of a roaring waterfall. He's reminded, suddenly, of the shrine that Roy Aker had shown him. As far as he knew, there wasn't one this close to Verdanturf. He reached for his belt to call the new Ranger, only to find that his Ranger communicator was missing. He frowned.

[break][break] The cheeky Pikachu was nowhere to be found. Only the unsettling sensation of a spirit whistling on the wind. Ollie shuddered.

[break][break] He glanced back at his friend warily, and then cleared his throat.

[break][break] "Looks like Tofu's nowhere to be found either. C'mon! Let's investigate. They can't be that far away."

After the events the AQUA meeting, Ollie had been frazzled. It felt strange to know that he had a strand of white hair now — it made him feel old. Too old to mention, so that's why he always either tucked it behind his ear or dyed it with the other elements of his hair.

[break][break] But it was more than the strange white-hair-strand. It was the appearance of the DRK Triad, the strange conversation that revolved around Yuina Higashi, and the fact that the Amnesty Program — that he'd been trying so hard to save — had been cut by the very person that he'd treasured the most, PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] It was with such grief that he found himself to the farthest edges of the sea, hoping to seek some semblance of relief. He blinked, however, upon hearing an unfamiliar voice.

[break][break] "Huh?" He turned around, brow furrowing for a moment, before grinning at the other man, waving a hand in greeting. "Yep! That's right. Um... do I know you?"

[break][break] Some guilt wormed in the Head Ranger's heart — he should've known. But between everything that he had to do at the head office now, in preparation for the upcoming fight and his attempts at keeping a healthy amount of distance between him and willow atkins, in respect for her relationship with boruta maher, Ollie honestly hadn't been as close with the florist as he used to be. As he should've been.

[break][break] "You know," he said, tilting his head. "If you guys ever need some extra help, just say the word. Or if there's anything at all that I can do, ya know."

[break][break] "You guys are some of my best friends, after all."

[break][break] He opened his mouth to suggest that they maybe work out a solution — perhaps he could send some Rangers over to see if there was any fertile ground, now that Isaac Merlo had helped so much with Petalburg, but he stopped, stunned, at the other man's words.

[break][break] Ollie stared for another long moment, flabbergasted, before he shook his head and closed his jaw.

[attr="class","postbox"] everywhere around them was evidence of simutaneously how similar ollie morales was to GIDEON GRAVES, and yet how different. educational books that littered the table, to journal articles detailing different vivillon migration patterns, to the very paperwork that ollie detested and gideon probably adored.

[break][break] but somehow, they fit together like two puzzle pieces.

[break][break] at least, that was the story that ollie liked to think about. the comfort of something new and uncertain was far easier to deal with then the reality of something that was known but complicated.

[break][break] "you know me so well," he teased, a smile tucked into the corner of his mouth.

[break][break] the head ranger glanced at his friend as the couch cushion deepened with the other man sitting beside him. ollie leaned back against the other man's arm, wincing only slightly from the movement, as he closed his eyes. his body ached. his heart ached. everything ached.

[break][break] but his eyes blinked open when the other spoke again, emerald eyes seeking bright-flecked gold, the way that a wilted sunflower looks towards the sun.

[break][break] a flirtatious quip was on the tip of his tongue; it would've been so easy to deflect. to flirt with the other man and lose himself in the other's embrace. to lie, just like he had in front of the paramedic van.

His limbs felt sluggish, tired, and yet blissful all at once. Ollie sat on the other man's lap, forehead placed against his shoulder as he tried to regain his breath.

[break][break] Golden light seeped into the room, tinging his auburn hair and tanned skin with it's glow. The sun was setting. Ollie knew that he probably should have peeled himself off the other man, should have stepped away and led them back to somewhere safer — somewhere where they were less likely to get barged in on.

[break][break] (Because how scandalous would that have been? The Head Ranger and Museum Director? Together?)

[break][break] But Ollie didn't do any of those things. He didn't move, because for some reason, at least for the moment, he could think of no other place he'd rather be.

[break][break] "Mm," Ollie said, arms wrapped loosely around the other man's broad shoulders. His expression was half-dazed with leftover bliss. A hand reached for the other's cheek, brushing it with a thumb. "I think you're the bad influence on me, actually. You're the first guy that I've - " He smiled, lop-sided and goofy. "You know. That I've done this with."

[break][break] Which was - after all - technically true. He and Caleb had been together, but he'd always chalked it up to teenage hormones and impulse. He had kissed men like boruta maher in bars, but always under the influence of alcohol.
