miyako theatrically sighs as she kicks her feet up onto the chief's desk, leaning back into her chair. "so let me get this straight—"[break][break]

the chief cuts her off with a huff, then slams a fist onto the table. "i already told you everything you need to know, noguchi! people've been coming back from meteor falls spouting nonsense about some scary crap happening over there, and we need someone to investigate to say we did our job and make them stop reporting this shit."[break][break]

his eyes drag over to miyako's coworkers, who are currently battling it out over who gets to use the coffee machine first. "but apparently the rest of my fucking department is too chickenshit to do anything about it, and you're the only one with enough brain cells to handle the job."[break][break]

miyako blinks slowly. "wow." she says. "so what you're saying is, i'm the best person for this job?"[break][break]

the chief fixes her with a hard stare. "what i'm saying is that if you don't get your ass out of that chair in the next five seconds, you're fired."[break][break]

a pause. then miyako flies out of her seat faster than a rapidash on roller skates, winking at the chief as she saunters past him. "just needed to hear you say it, boss."[break][break]

miyako parks her bike just shy of meteor falls, the steep cliffs looming like jagged teeth against the twilight sky. lighting a cigarette, she kicks at the loose gravel underfoot, already feeling the oppressive atmosphere settling over her like a second skin. the air is thick, humming with something old. something dangerous.[break][break]

the path ahead twists through gnarled trees and patches of overgrown grass, leading her to the ruins that supposedly belonged to the draconids. what remains is little more than weathered stone, carved into arches and columns that stretch like skeletal hands toward the heavens.[break][break]

it’s eerie, sure. but ghostly dragons? miyako takes a long drag of her cigarette and exhales slowly, unimpressed. "right. ghosts. i’ll believe it when i see it."[break][break]

her boots crunch over the broken remains of what might have been ceremonial tiles, worn down by centuries of weather and the occasional heavy-footed Pokémon. the ruins don’t feel abandoned, though. something’s been here—recently.[break][break]

she won't find out by just standing around. time to investigate!

[break][break] It isn't Ollie's first time here, which makes it slightly better, knowing what he's there to expect. But this time, he isn't there to expect ghouls — he shudders — but rather the investigation of some ruins that were reported to appear by his fellow Rangers.

[break][break] The abandoned town is depressing, but no less depressing then the other reminders of war as of late. After the events of Sootopolis City and the countless numbers of those that had been lost, it was hard to find anything surprising.

[break][break] But he was surprised at the crunch of boots against pavement and the sound of someone's voice echoing in the small, cavernous space — not his own.

[break][break] "Oh hey!" he said, looking relieved to find someone else here. "You must be the specialist they sent over." He stabs a thumb at his chest, and his cap-wearing Pikachu that rests on his shoulder chimes in a greeting as well.

[break][break] "The name's Ollie," he said, offering a hand out to shake. "Some of my Rangers found some ruins, so I was sent over to investigate. You know anything about Draconids?"

miyako nearly jumps out of her skin at the sudden noise, whirling around and immediately regretting it as her hand flies to her forehead to try to quell the headache pounding there. instead of focusing on pain management techniques, however, her attention is quickly drawn away by the surprisingly tall guy addressing her.[break][break]

oh. she'd almost forgotten that there could be other people investigating this stuff. cool. neat. nice.[break][break]

"...nope," she answers succinctly, not moving to return the handshake offered. then again - "wait, wait—"[break][break]

her hand comes away from her brow and flies up in the universal symbol of 'hold on,' momentarily forgetting her audience as she recalls a fragment of ancient lore drilled into her during elementary school, alongside basic arithmetic and how to properly fold origami cranes.[break][break]

dragons—no wait, draconids—lived among people back when everybody lived in caves and hunted woolly mammoths or whatever, right? they worshipped rayquaza, she thinks.[break][break]

trying to seem knowledgeable, she repeats all that to ollie, only remembering to introduce herself halfway through the explanation.[break][break]

"—anyway, i’m miyako, a detective or something."[break][break]

he doesn't need to know she’s just a glorified paper-pusher most days. he definitely doesn't need to know she's hungover. absolutely no one needs to know she's contemplating dipping out of this shitshow to get high under a tree.
