ollie was endlessly glad that Eduardo Hisakawa wasn't going to make his little embarrasment more mortifying than it could've been. it was probably then that he decided that he liked him.

[break][break] "of course, whatever you need! i got your back dude," he said with a bright grin, before stepping away from him and the rest of the mudpie and deeper down the path.

[break][break] annalise henderson was going to lead the group closer to AREA ZERO so ollie decided that he and eddie would be hanging out in the great chasm. it didn't bother him at all to have to hang out with a newbie — in fact, he quite liked it, if he were honest.

[break][break] reaching for his utility belt, he released out more of his pokemon.

[break][break] "mocha, mozz, nutty and meg, scout the area for us, yeah? let us know if you see anything weird." the pair of wyrdeer and sawsbuck galloped outwards at the head ranger's command.

[break][break] "they'll be back soon," he said with a nod. "until then, we can just take a walk. hopefully nothing crazy comes up while they're gone."

Sympathy glimmered in Ollie's eyes. He'd heard a story a hundred times before. Not just people like John Sullivan, or even paxton concordas, but him and Eva Morales too. Their homes were razed by TEAM ROCKET. It was hard to believe such a thing happened, and even harder to forgive.

[break][break] A warm hand clasped around the kid's shoulder.

[break][break] "I know what ya mean," he said. "It's a hard thing to forgive."

[break][break] He stepped back as the other pulled out a lighter, the flame casting a bright reflection in his emerald green eyes.

[break][break] 'Lots of your friends?'

[break][break] In an instant, the station EXPLODED and engulfed in vibrant flame. The force of the explosion was overwhelming, tearing through the remnants of the Rocket outpost with unstoppable power, leaving nothing but scattered debris in its wake.

[break][break] A queasy feeling twisted in Ollie's stomach, and he turned his back to it.

[break][break] "Yeah," he found himself saying. "Let's head back."

[break][break] He flashed a smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes.

[break][break] What if Caleb Harcourt had been in that station? In another life, another universe, he could've been.

"Really?" Ollie was surprised, but then again, there was always a first time for everyone. "Well, then it's a first for both of us then!"

[break][break] He grinned, easygoing as ever. Though, Remiel definitely had a lot more experience in general — especially with what he said about having done this kind of thing above ground.

[break][break] "I gotchu."

[break][break] The Head Ranger wandered over with a nod, pulling apart the contraption's tripod legs. It was not quite anything like Ollie had seen before, but he was also used to dealing with all sorts of strange equipment. The League often had Rangers test things out first — considering how many of it's Rangers were used to dealing with field work.

[break][break] Ollie trusted Roy Aker to get rid of the equipment while he and his Tyrantrum attempted to hold their opponents back. Whether or not his DRAGON CLAW struck, it wouldn't matter. An EXPLOSION turned the weapon into a heaping pile of ash, and it wasn't long before their enemies were being blown back to bits too.

[break][break] "Pistachio, quick, before they - " get away, he wanted to say, but didn't get to. Because suddenly shadows leaped out of nowhere, and although both his dragons thundered forward in a combination of TWISTER and EARTHQUAKE, there was no stopping them.

[break][break] They disappeared, and that devestating roar echoed across the crystal caverns again. A shudder ran through the Head Ranger and he locked eyes with the other man.

[break][break] "Okay," he said, a bit breathless as he climbed upon his Dragonite. "Let's go."

[break][break] He swallowed thickly, glancing at the cindered pile of ash.

[break][break] "We'll come back to inspect it later."

[break][break] "Come on, Pistachio! Lead us outta here!"

[break][break] With a burst of air, the Dragonite used EXTREME SPEED to quick evacuate them from the area.

Eva Morales, alongside probably illeana reyes or GIDEON GRAVES, would have more to be glimpsed from these unusual creatures — maybe even more than what could be found in the depths of the glimmering caverns.

[break][break] the last time he'd seen the elite four was when they were navigating those tera tunnels together.

[break][break] ollie folds his arms, tilting his head as he listens to her explanation of discovery. other rangers had come across similar beats, which he was sure he would read in the pile of paperwork annalise henderson gave him.

[break][break] "well," he says eventually, rearranging his grip on the stack of papers and evening them out with the palm of his hand. "whatever it is. be careful. you don't want to anger anything in there — and let me know if you need support. i'll be there for you, no matter what i'm doing. okay?"

"i'll ask paxton." maybe the council's own security would be able to spare some forces to petition around AREA ZERO. if not, paxton concordas would at least know the people to ask. "he has a lot of contacts, i'm sure we can figure out some way to increase the security around the area."

[break][break] it was a temporary solution, not a permanent fix. after all, if they'd learned anything from the silence icelands in general, it was that they couldn't gatekeep it forever.

[break][break] The Rocket that they'd fought in the Ultra Deep Sea, not just once but twice. The Rocket that had killed Nougat. The Rocket that had been littered through countless League reports.

[break][break] Ollie does not ordinarily feel FEAR, or at least he tries his best to avoid it. He thrives in sunlight, in brazenly thundering forward despite his best interests. He pretends like none of it matters, none of it all, because it is so much worse to sit in that discomfort, that fear.

[break][break] It's why he's an expert in running away.

[break][break] But he can't run away now.

[break][break] He thinks about the panicked, nearly grief-stricken expression of GIDEON GRAVES as he shoved him away. He thinks about the call to his Rangers that are coming - surely. He stares back at the static crackle of the strange robot that steers towards him, of the other's unmistakable helmet, the blank, expressionless screen.

[break][break] And then, suddenly, as if the screen had not been dead to begin with, as if he had not witnessed the other man's struggle.

[break][break] "i'm perfectly fine, head ranger morales."

[break][break] Ollie thinks about NOUGAT. Thinks about Caleb Harcourt. Thinks about Ashley Shepard.

[break][break] 'You don't look fine,' he wants to say, but doesn't.

[break][break] As they advance, the Head Ranger remains rooted in place. His shoulders square, heels planted firmly on the linoleum floor. Immovable. Impossible to budge.

[break][break] 'You're the shield, you're the wall.' He thinks about Galar, about the conversations he shared with freya morningstar, and the life that he'd almost shared with PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] But then there's that sound again, and Ollie flinches, and his eyes fly up to see NEON scaling up a statue and then a sudden brilliant glow as the Genesect turns towards them. Fuck! The Head Ranger leaps, crashing into the floor, as something shatters behind him. His grasps for his belt, and his Pikachu leaps off his shoulder, defending with a vibrant DISCHARGE.

[break][break] The word echoes in the air and Ollie grimaces from his spot in the dirt, cheek pressed into the earth. It's not a word that he recognizes, which makes him wonder if it's a name but that's not quite right either. There is something about it that doesn't seem human.

[break][break] There's not a lot of time for him to process, however, before his face is quickly slammed back into the ground as the GRAVITY is spammed. Again and again and again. Ollie grunts as agony twists his gut, feeling his organs and brain matter and everything simply just melt before -

[break][break] Relief.

[break][break] He gasps with relief when the feeling is alleviated, glancing up to find his Dragonite lowered to the ground near him. The pokemon wraps the electric webbing in his fiery fist, burning a hole big enough for Ollie to crawl through. The Head Ranger grunts to his feet, just in time to see the psychic-type fall into a blackened pile of ash.

It wasn't like paxton concordas didn't make good points. They were good points, ones that were hard to refute, but it brought more insight to the Head Ranger about the deputy's character.

[break][break] And on the topic of the Council, and more importantly the Amnesty Program as a whole, Ollie grows quiet. He thinks about all the members of the program that he knows well, that he's not only worked with but also knows how hard they've tried to leave their mistakes behind them. He thinks of Isaac Merlo, Caleb Harcourt, or Remiel Calcifet.

[break][break] "Choice isn't black and white though," Ollie said, shaking his head. "They're human just as much as we are. They make mistakes, we make mistakes — haven't you ever done something you regret?"
