[break][break] the head ranger lead the way down the hallway of a secure part of the ever grande headquarters, the cool air from the AC humming softly through the vents. one by one, he unlocked doors, each requiring a higher level of security clearance than the one before.

[break][break] "here," he said, handing robin coello a medical kit that he'd brought along, courtesy of the SAPPHIRE budget. "hold this for a sec."

[break][break] briefly, ollie glanced at the door ahead, juggling the keycard in his hand.

[break][break] "alright, last time i used this, it got stuck, so fingers crossed," he said with a chuckle.

[break][break] in front of them laid a heavy metal door, alongside a simple security panel with an yellow glowing light at the top alongside the league emblem. ollie swiped the card and after a moment of silence, the light blinked blue, granting them access.

"I hope you got a fat paycheck this month because I can put some serious food away." And he still deserved payback for the Toxapex incident. She accepted the med kit as they traveled through the Super Secret hallways. [break][break]

The heavy metal reinforcements that yielded under his keycard were interesting to say the least. She wondered what kind of things they kept down here. She had fought a Tapu with Greyson Connors , so she imagined there were various deities that could be released in the depths of the building for training purposes. Avatars probably also practiced down here to learn what they could do with their new pact. [break][break]

As the latest door opened, she found her gaze glued to his keycard. "Kinda crazy that one little card opens up all these reinforced doors, y'know?" She hummed thoughtfully. "Does Greyson have one? He shouldn't have one. I'm gonna take his spot any day now." She shrugged nonchalantly, hoping Ollie wouldn't ask about her badge progress, which was a whopping one badge out of four gym attempts. [break][break]

She couldn't shake the feeling of how foreign this was. Not just being tucked in the guts of League HQ but the prospect of legendaries being contained in something people built. "I feel weird seeing legendary pokemon up close. Also, Bulu hits hard."

"you would think so, right?"

[break][break] ollie chuckled, shaking his head.

[break][break] there were always rumors that the rangers weren't paid enough, and perhaps that was due to the fact that some of the amnesty volunteers didn't get as much as they would if they were truly rangers. and while none of that was true, ollie often felt that some of his paycheck went missing whenever he went to go pay for his monthly bills.

[break][break] but maybe that had to do with the exorbitant amount of food that tofu - a small, seemingly lithe pikachu - could eat in one sitting.

[break][break] "oh? are you?" ollie turned, eyes widening in mock surprise. "but then what am i gonna do? we can't lose you, robin!"

[break][break] surely, that whole toxipex incident couldn't have been that traumatizing.

[break][break] "but yeah - " he said, shuffling through another doorway and then leading the way down a stairwell. "it's all very high priority, security, that kinda stuff." stuff that people like paxton concordas or Greyson Connors were better off explaining. "i didn't even know this place existed until dahlia offered me my seat."

[break][break] and still, every day, no matter how much time had passed, he often wondered what it was exactly that she saw in him.

[break][break] "you've met bulu?" he asks, head tilted. he'd read the report that Genevieve Cromwell had been granted it; not that he was surprised, if there was anyone who could be trusted with something as powerful as that, it would have been genny.

[break][break] "i used ta think so too, you know."

[break][break] he still remembered the first time that he saw a legendary up close, and it was basically his sister's own avatarship, which he'd had to have found out through a third party of all things.

[break][break] "they're kinda cute, you know, once you get over the whole, slightly-terrifying, they-could-probably-kill-you if they wanted to factor."

She rolled her eyes at his mock surprise, but she couldn't fight the smile, either. "You can't get rid of me," she insisted, "I'll be around forever, shepherding ghosts out of grocery stores and pulling skitties out of trees." Ranger life made her happy, though she felt an untamed pit of guilt in her stomach that gnawed at her all the time. She hadn't told anyone about strangling her mom, and she knew the criminality of it would ruin her life. [break][break]

She wasn't ready to give up the armband, though.[break][break]

"Yeah, fought Bulu with Grey and it was like, very persistent. I carried, though. Greyson's Nidoking is pretty mid." Poison had been a good strategy, but she hadn't been very familiar with those pokemon overall. Her specialty was truly ghost types. Only recently, she'd worked hard to diversify her teams. She needed to, if she wanted to be prepared for any scenario. [break][break]

She raised an unbelieving brow at his assessment of legendaries. "Cute?" Maybe a few were. Melody's Meloetta was, but she promised not to tell, so she couldn't mention it here, even if she trusted Ollie (outside of The Incident). "Maybe the sprite-like ones like Azelf. I just learned about Victini recently." She had so recently learned about the last one, from lam logan. Her phone had been blowing up all week while she tried to learn more.[break][break]

"That little guy... I've been trying to learn a lot about him. You ever see that one? Since you're like, old and all?" Surely Victini had appeared during Ollie's time.

"haha! well that's a load off my back then," he grinned. "i dunno if the rangers could survive without you."

[break][break] though, he was sure that Elise Calcifet had a pretty unique connection to ghost pokemon too, but that was neither here nor there.

[break][break] his footsteps carried through the empty hallway as their easygoing chitchatter continued.

[break][break] "woah, that's pretty neat. did ya know that bulu gave Genevieve Cromwell it's blessing?"

[break][break] or dahlia goode did. he sorely hoped that TAPU BULU could help the redhead in ways that he'd so far been unable to.

[break][break] "can't say i've ever fought Greyson Connors before myself — it's been a while since i tried to gym trainer circuit. that was back in kanto, when i was a kid. and well, you know."

[break][break] one more door that led down a stairwell and to a large, but awfully quiet room. it almost felt like one of robin coello's ghosts would come jumping out. ollie didn't seem deterred, as congenial and relaxed as he always seemed to be.

[break][break] "hey! i'm not old. well," he paused, as if seeming to consider it. "not that old."

[break][break] he was pretty sure that Greyson Connors had more gray hairs than him, anyway. not that anyone would be able to tell, on account of the fact that he dyed it.

[break][break] "but woah, victini's pretty cool. i've never seen it myself, but i'm pretty sure it's spirit - like - flew off after we fought on mt. pyre."

[break][break] those v-shaped wisps that soared through the air, mingled with palkia's pink-tinged energy and through the living gates of heaven and hell. the day that people like paxton concordas were reborn. it was unforgettable.

[break][break] but where was VICTINI now? if moltres was dead, burned into a volcanic crater with CHI YU'S rebirth, and PALKIA was in the hands of the league's head professor, illeana reyes, where was the victory pokemon when the region needed its luck the most?

"Woah, Bulu's got a bestie?" She had not expected the legendary island guardian to pick a human companion. After all, it had been so disagreeable. She laughed at Ollie's explanation about his experience with the gym circuit. Maybe he hadn't fought her rival, but they could make the dream a reality. "You and I can always jump him." She waved the thought off lightly, though she would love an impromptu fight with Greyson. [break][break]

Her brow furrowed. "You fought its spirit?" She shoved at Ollie with disbelief. "What the hell? Why are you fighting spirits!" Her outrage was largely ingenuine, but she couldn't believe he'd seen its little soul thing. She'd kill for the opportunity to do that, too. [break][break]

"I'm gonna find his little spirit shards and like, put him together. Y'know me, communing with the dead and all." She did her best to look spooky, but Ollie had seen her flip her lid in public, so she didn't think it would do anything at all. "Okay, yeah. Let's see what's behind door number one." She grinned at him.

She shoves him, and he laughs.

[break][break] Or well, they're the visitors.

[break][break] Surely enough, a shadow glimmers and from the previous absence, there is a sudden, very strong presence. Emerald eyes shifts and he sees the prowling form of the SOLGALEO appear before them, regal and majestic. It regards robin coello with a certain curiosity — never having met her before.

[break][break] "Hey dude," Ollie grins, friendly, as if he's talking to someone like lam logan or noah faber. "We came with supplies."

[break][break] He lifts a hand and sure enough, procures a can of what appears to be pokemon poffins. Ollie twists open the container, pooling it's contents into a nearby bowl.

[break][break] "As I was saying," he continues the previous thread of conversation. "I didn't fight any spirits. We were - actually - fighting Palkia. It gave me quite a whopping."

[break][break] He still remembers being laid up in the hospital, cracked rib and all.

[break][break] "But something happened and that's when the Wild rifts opened up." A pause. "You ever been to the Border?"
