"shut up!" ollie shouts in her defense, eyes flashing. "you don't know what you're talking about!"

[break][break] a gleam of PROTECT shakes around his pidgeot as the altaria slams into them, just as ollie's arms stretch outwards in an attempt to grab that awful helmet. bright mint-blue. digitized colors. his fingers dig into the fabric, sharp.

[break][break] his eyes widen.

[break][break] "it's... you!"

[break][break] but suddenly there is a blast towards them as the WHIRLWIND surges the air beneath him, tugging him off his pidgeot. his heart gives a dedicated lurch, his strong biceps wrapping around the rocket agent as they plummet steadily towards their death.

the weight on his shoulder is nearly enough to bring him back. to remind him of that first death, which would be the start of all the other's. why did this all have to be so awful?

[break][break] his eyes grow wide as the pup races along the sand with relentless effort. his loyalty to his master and the battle itself precedes any amount of fear that he could possibly feel. ollie leaps forward, almost as if to stop him, but there is something that pulls him back.

[break][break] as if an invisible string pulling taut against him, her voice that has always tethered him to her.

[break][break] 'stay close.'

[break][break] "but - " his words are cut off though with a roar, as ocean crashes around the yamper. the canine gargles his last breath, swords stabbing into ollie's death as he witnesses the relentless death of his pokemon. the DARK SANDSTREAM persists, lashing into his skin. but his eyes can't look away. he can't — "nugget!"

[break][break] the strings snap.

[break][break] ollie sprints, straight into the sloshing darkness, as he covers himself over the crumpled body of his pup.

[break][break] it was too late.

[break][break] nugget was dead.

[break][break] the apology feels empty. by now, ollie knows that pokemon death - or perhaps simply death in general - is just an outcome of war. it reminds him of that day that he spent with Melody Miro on mt. pyre, crying over the loss of his staraptor, hands full of soot and ash. ollie knows it all and yet, it doesn't make it feel any less bitter.

[break][break] his fingers tighten around the limp figure in his arms.

[break][break] it feels empty, but at least lam gets it too.

[break][break] his mouth warps into a smile, lopsided and sheepish.

[break][break] Ollie's curiosity is peaked. He wondered how much of the contents of these letters would differ from what a normal teenage boy might talk about. Come to think of it — how old was Andrew?

[break][break] He wondered how much, if any, would detail his fire-type Monferno...

[break][break] "That's a good idea!" he said, looking over at Josh Devlin. Ollie walked over to the bed, following after the Gym Leader, to pool the rest of the letters on the bed. He skimmed through them, looking to organize them.

[break][break] "Man, this guy writes a lot of letters!"

[break][break] Maybe after, they could go see where that other guy went (Kouji Matsubara.)

it works. by some miracle, it works.

[break][break] reeses manages to pierce their opponents pokemon, just as lam logan's shinx paralyzes the assailants with electricity. something bitter sets on ollie's tongue at the sight of it; of the people who just killed pepper.

[break][break] there's no time to hesitate, though. he reaches for his comm device, calling for reinforcements to take them away.

[break][break] with a flash of his wrist, he returns reeses to his pokeball before the wild beast can do any more damage. in it's place he releases his tropius. the pokemon's SWEET SCENT is enough to stun the rockets into silence, just as lam logan helps the civilians get to safety.

[break][break] after several moments, when the rockets are set away by incoming league officers, ollie turns.

[break][break] "hey, lam! everything good?"

[break][break] in his arms is his dead watchog, limp in his arms.

his gaze is sharp, when the ground rumbles something fierce and the earthquake creates a fissure in the ground.

[break][break] "pepper..!" his warning is cut off though, with emerald eyes as wide as saucers, as he watches his watchog get swallowed up by the crater. not even lam logan's toucannon is fast enough to save her.

[break][break] for a minute, time slows to a stop. ollie is brought back onto the cliff months ago, where he'd already lost —

[break][break] no! he wasn't going to give up. he wasn't going to be pathetic here.

[break][break] not when he had lam logan counting on him.

[break][break] "reeses!" he shouts, voice taking on a rough edge. "rock tomb!"

[break][break] the iron thorns lets out a roar of defiance, before it's body is swallowed by hot-whtie energy. it's claws raise to the sky, just as a ROCK TOMB pierces the ground where they stand, crushing their opponent's numels under the weight of the attack.

the interdream mist still unsettles him. it pools in the base of his spine, trickling uncertainty into his bones. but by this point, he has to be used to it.

[break][break] at least, not enough to blink when illeana reyes comes jogging out of the mist, like an angel from pink air.

[break][break] illie's quick to cut off their communications with her pokemon and ollie aims to assist. his blaziken stands behind them on guard, aiming to DETECT the rocket mob as they grow closer. to see if her porygon had worked.

[break][break] in the meantime:

[break][break] "how've you been doing?" he asked, head turning towards her. "must be rough - scientists aren't usually on the frontlines, are they?"

[break][break] then again, neither are rangers. this is an unusual situation all around.

[break][break] a country at war broke no means for peace.

'she has a nice smile,' the thought passes, followed by the curious one of why he didn't seem to recognize it. then again, he was sure, illeana reyes and Eva Morales had many assistants, so it was easy to miss one or two.

[break][break] the words that spilled from her lips were confusing and pretty and intelligent — all things that someone like ollie wasn't too familiar with. he appreciated it all the same.

[break][break] "the work you do for the league is well-appreciated," he said, bobbing his head with a nod. he leans back, rubbing the back of his neck. "can't say i understand most of it."

[break][break] emerald eyes glimmer as he looks back at her.

[break][break] "not a civilian," he said, but his uniform was too obvious to lie. he wore the same bright colors that the league was branded for, not to mention the bright red band along his arm that spoke of his ranger status. but then again, ollie was not really in the policy of lying to begin with. he was no good at it.

pain bled into the swoobat's wings as the braviary brings him close. unwillign to give up just yet, the swoobat tears herself away with an AIR CUTTER to push some distance between them.

[break][break] ollie glances down towards the water, breathing a sigh of relief as the shaymin doesn't hit the water completely. he didn't want the pokemon to drown.

[break][break] but that brought forth another problem. the pokemon was on attack.

[break][break] "c'mon," he urged his dragonite, attempting to pull some of the seeds off the pokemon's scaly back. "let's get out of here before it's too late." a foolhardy attempt for sure, but maybe they'd be able to escape with EXTREME SPEED.
