It took a while for Josh to get to sleep last night, but he eventually did. It was hard to do so, what with the excitement that he had made it to Day Two of the tournament. The removal of participants with a low win-loss record had thinned the field substantially. Even so, he still had a lot of work to do. As he finished downing a bagel, Josh heard the tournament organizer make an announcement over the PA system.

"Attention all Vital City Tournament participants. Welcome to Day Two. With the number of players remaining in the tournament, the cut line is expected to be 48 points, and the money line is expected to be 37 points. These may shift as the tournament goes on. Pairings are up for round thirteen. Pairings are up for round thirteen."

The list of participants left in the tournament would almost certainly be all fierce competitors. Josh was one of them, and if his Zeraora hadn't been a known factor before, it was one by now. One his opponent, ollie morales , was almost certainly aware of. As he took his position on one side of their assigned arena, he waved to the Head Ranger. "Morning! Excited to score some cold, hard cash?" Josh asked, the quadrupedal Zeraora looking like he could disappear into a lightning bolt at any moment.

He was happy to see the other in brighter spirits than the last time that they had met. Ollie's gaze glanced down at the Zeroara at the trainer's side, recognizing him instantly. "Hey there, Raikiri!"

The demeanor between the two was friendly; in this moment, the Elite Ranger didn't see Ollie as his boss. He was as a friend. An equal. Raikiri would return the fist bump by raising a paw, giving the Head Ranger a feel for how hard and shock-absorbent the electric feline's paws were. They had to be, given the blistering speeds he ran at while ferrying Josh about Hoenn.

He would demonstrate those blistering speeds against Tofu, disappearing into a lightning-fast QUICK ATTACK the moment the horn sounded. The Zeraora was not only fast, but had incredible reaction time. And Josh rode this Pokémon? He truly was a speed demon to be willing to use such a ferocious yet majestic creature as a mount.

[attr="class","textbody"] Electricity sparked something fierce behind his knuckles, buzzing through him, even as he pulled away. It made Ollie grin; Raikiri certainly was strong, wasn't he?

[break][break] It would make battling him all the more fun.

[break][break] When the battle begins, neither Ollie or Tofu are prepared for how quick the Mythical feline is. It darts across the speed frighteningly fast, slamming into Tofu and tossing him through the air. He collides back into the floor, leaping quickly to his feet and shaking his pelt. He growls in frustration.

[break][break] A DISARMING VOICE echoes through the air, forming innocently looking pink notes that would explode on impact if touched.

Speed was a deadly weapon in Josh's hands. As useful as it was for evading pinpoint attacks, it would not do much against a sonic attack such as Tofu's DISARMING VOICE. Several of the pink spheres detonated in Raikiri's face, causing him to nearly run out of bounds. Sparks flew from his claws as he slammed on the brakes.

Purring loudly and menacingly, the big cat zoomed toward Tofu a second time. This time, the threat was less raw speed and more that his four paws were alight, bursting into flames from friction burn. Raikiri tried to spread that fire to Tofu's body, ramming and trampling with the force of a volley of FIRE PUNCHES.

[attr="class","textbody"] Tofu lets out a squeak of surprise as Raikiri's FIRE PUNCHES blaze past him. Though he's able to evade some of them, there's no evading the swift thrust of flames directly in his chest, causing him to tumble backwards against the ground.

[break][break] Grimacing, the Pikachu leapt to his feet again. This time, Tofu used all his energy to ressurrect a SURF in the air between them. It wouldn't do much in the way of damage, but would at least distract the mythical beast in time so he could come up with a back-up plan.

The wave of water would crush Raikiri if he couldn't get out of the way. That would be simple enough for the Zeraora, springing sky-high and BOUNCING above the wall of water. Or it would in theory. In practice, it was not so simple; with him being so close to Tofu, even the electric feline lacked the reaction time. The crest of the wave sent Josh's partner tumbling over, landing painfully on his back and leaving him stunned for a moment Ollie was sure to take advantage of.

While he was on the ground, Raikiri was very limited in what he could do; he could only expel a barrage of ELECTRO BALLS from his paws while he rolled onto his side and stood up. Running on four paws came with advantages, but it came with glaring weaknesses, including the ability to right himself!

[break][break] But of course, things weren't over. Sure enough, Raikiri was making his combat with the barrage of ELECTRO BALLS that cascaded through the air. Luckily enough, though, that was exactly when Tofu's LIGHTNING ROD took effect. Bright energy consumed the Pikachu, who's tiny teeth crunched on the last bits of electricity, grinning like a shark.

TRAILBLAZING through the minefield of Electro Balls, Tofu was wicked fast. If the Pikachu evolved, he might make a fantastic racing Pokémon. Even so, Josh would not allow himself and his Pokémon to be outdone at his own game. There was no one in Hoenn faster than he was.

No one.

It took a chain of QUICK ATTACKS for Raikiri to outpace Tofu, The grassy trail the Pikachu left behind was convenient, too: once he had enough distance, the mythical thundercat sharply about-faced, his four paws catching fire from the friction burn. He trampled over the grass, FIRE PUNCHES setting it alight. The flames would lead back to Tofu and set him on fire if he wasn't careful!

[attr="class","textbody"] Ollie knew enough about Josh Devlin to know that he was the master of speed, a title that he didn't quite plan on fighting. But Tofu, of course, had other things in mind.

[break][break] Ollie couldn't help but let out a laugh as the Pikachu tried to defeat the mythical beast in a test of speed.

[break][break] Still, he had to support him!

[break][break] "Tofu! Let's raise the stakes!"

[break][break] The dynamax band around his arm glowed vibrantly just as tendrils of light encapsulated the electric-type. It tripled Tofu to size, just as he took the blazing fists to his heart. The Pikachu roared with pain, before a glow of energy in the shape of an IRON TAIL swiped against Raikiri.

Tofu's IRON TAIL was one of the quickest Josh had ever seen. Normally a cumbersome attack, particularly when the Pikachu was a giant, this one was simply too fast for even Raikiri to dodge.

So this was the Dynamax Phenomenon in action. He had seen it in the Galar Memory before, but his recollection of it was so hazy, the only details he vividly remembered being sitting in Raikou's thundercloud saddle, slicing and dicing through hordes of Slowbro and Slowking at dizzying speeds. It was a fleeting memory he grasped onto for dear life, a memory of a world where he got to live his dream of being Raikou's friend.

Josh had to tilt his head all the way up just to see the Pikachu's ears. Speedy attacks would no longer work against the titanic vermin.

All but one.

Raising his Z-GLOVE above his head, the Gym Leader's Z-Crystal and his feline partner's QUICKINIUM-Z glowed a brilliant yellow. The Zeraora vanished into a HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE, on a course to trample the Pikachu's enormous feet. Even if the Dynamaxed mouse could step out of the way, his LIGHTNING ROD would be no good against the piercing lightning bolts trailing the electric cat, nor the aural explosion that boomed from Raikiri passing his own sound waves.

[attr="class","textbody"] As expected, the LIGHTNING ROD was quick to trigger once the Zeroara raced towards him. Electricity was easily zapped up by the ability, but like a cup of water that spilled over when it was too full, the incoming electrical damage caused the gigantic Pikachu agony as it became too overzealous for the Pikachu to maintain.

[break][break] But it was too late. The energy pummeled against him and Tofu let out a groan of pain, as green energy surged around him in a last fail-safe attempt at a TRAILBLAZE. Vines and leaves grew underfoot in an attempt to tangle the Zeroara, but it was likely too late.

Though the Pikachu was incredibly speedy in TRAILBLAZING a path to the Zeraora, there was simply no outrunning the fastest Pokémon raised by the Master of Faster when using the fastest Z-Move known throughout Hoenn. In today's contest between Z-Energy and Dynergy, Z-Energy had won. Yet another reason for Josh to avoid the accursed Dynamax Bands as long as he could.

"Those things are terrifying," Josh answered shakily despite his win, his eyes shifting toward Ollie's Dynamax Band. "I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I really don't want to use one unless the League deems it absolutely necessary. Regardless, this battle was fun. Thanks again."
