That being said, there were still no less dangerous than they had been before &mdash and so it was up to the rangers to make sure that any threats were well-contained.

[break][break] When he arrived, the Head Ranger was on the back of his Dragonite. The pokemon's broad wings formed a shadow over the back of newly-primed Champion status Melody Miro as he landed, boots hitting the soft soil of Fortree forest's coast, where the distortion had already begun to form. Lightning streaked across the sky as the Ranger reached for his belt, tossing his Wyrdeer's pokebalsl into the air.

[break][break] A family of Skovet trembled underneath the trees, fearful of their fate. Both Wyrdeer were quick to work, using their PSYCHIC power to barricade the pokemon inside for protection.

[break][break] ollie morales's relationship with MATIAS SILPH has always been complicated. first as would-be brothers, then as jealous rivals, and finally, a weird sort of acceptance when knowing how exactly the volatile fit into the league, and how even those who hated him would vouch for him. he thinks of the way that PENELOPE LIVY and freya morningstar spoke about him, thinks about the way that he felt about him, in that terastallized tunnel, when they'd been caved in from the snowstorm. how far away they were from everything, away from the reality that bound them, and how bewildered matias had been when ollie had expressed his upset.

[break][break] Such things made it easy for anyone to walk into his office, whether or not he was there.

[break][break] Which was inconvenient when people like Greyson Connors barged in without an appointment. Something that happened far more these days than Ollie would like to admit. After all, tensions were high these days — not just within the League, but in general. With the increased reports of "infected" pokemon and humans from rangers like annalise henderson, there was more work to do than ever.

[break][break] So naturally, it surprised him when Greyson Connors burst in half-way through a meeting with a senior ranger who was giving him a similar report. Both men turned to stare at the intruder.

[break][break] 'Uh? We do?'

[break][break] Ollie stared at the Elite Four member for a moment, before waving his hand at the ranger he was speaking to.

[break][break] "Thanks for these, Thompson. Give us a minute?"

[break][break] The redhead gave Greyson Connors a look before shuffling out of the office.

[break][break] Ollie cleared his throat.

[break][break] "What's the matter?" he frowned, striding over to where the other man sat on his - admittingly messy - couch. "Are you okay?"

[break][break] Verdant green eyes scanned the other for injuries, though he knew it was hypocritical to judge him. After all, Ollie had jumped back into the fray shortly after getting the clean bill of health from Eva Morales after the Kyurem fight. Perhaps a little too shortly if the likes of willow atkins had anything to say about it.

[break][break] "that's not what i'm saying!" he said, his voice felt hoarse. whether it was from the shouting in the great chasm from their battle, or from this one. "i'm not saying it's alright, i'm not saying that nothing happened, but it - "

[break][break] 'it doesn't matter,' he wanted to say. it didn't matter because as much as she would try to push him away, he wouldn't let her. not again. but his words fall short when streaks of cold fall down her cheeks and then her voice spilled into the shape of dribbling diamond tears.

[break][break] Behind the kaleidoscope of color, Ollie leaps back. The armored Rocket leaps towards him with all the maliciousness of a wolf unchained, growling at him with the sort of feral energy of a boy who's lifetime was twisted and warped by invisible chains of malice.

[break][break] The same chain that every Rocket inevitably held.

[break][break] He thought about the words of Isaac Merlo — how his friends had been burdened by the system, how it wasn't their fault, how they needed to be saved.

[break][break] Ollie didn't know this boy, not anymore than he'd known Ashley Shepard, and yet he wanted to save him anyway.

[break][break] "Wait - hold on -"

[break][break] The Head Ranger lacked formal training, but growing up in a family of muscular boys instilled in him natural athleticism and luck. When he dodged the stray kick, he felt fingers clamp around his arm. Digging his heels in, he refused to retreat. He knew he couldn't outpace his opponent, but he leveraged his weight, standing firm as the other grabbed him. After a brief pause, he thrust his arm forward, seeking to disrupt the other's balance in response.

[break][break] Blood splatters as the unnatural METAL CLAW slashes against Tofu. He skids across the linoleum floor of the building, the room pulsating with erratic flashes of electric blue and sickly green, before leaping back again to slash down an IRON TAIL against the metallic beast.

[break][break] The Rocket doesn't relent. His assaults are ceaseless, the abrupt and chaotic strikes relentlessly pounding against Ollie's sturdy frame. With each blow, the Head Ranger grunts in response, until he suddenly reaches out, attempting to grasp the Rocket's wrists.

[break][break] "HOLD ON!"

[break][break] Ollie grits his teeth, eyes flashing like green lightening.

[break][break] "Stop it. Stop this. You're not - you can't be - come on, shake out of it! Wake up!"

It wasn't that he didn't sometimes think about Pallet Town, or Kanto for that matter, but whenever he did, it was filled with ideas of Eva Morales or Caleb Harcourt, not any legendary pokemon.

Ollie knows Lam enough to know that it isn't a trap — that Lam isn't the type to steer him into a conversation, only to clamp down on him like an Ursaring's trap, yet he couldn't help but feel a moment of apprehension anyway. Especially considering all the conversation around it lately, it was only natural.

[break][break] The word, for some reason, sent a shiver down the Head Ranger's spine. Despite not having heard it before, at least, not in any real capacity. Ollie was from Kanto, then transplanted to Hoenn, and then had spent a number of years vacationing off the shores of Kalos. There was no reason that he should've known about the nightmare that was Eternatus. The thing that had razed down all the walls of Galarian soil.

[break][break] Even the word triggered a flash of a memory behind the Ranger's eyes. A flood of poison pools sunken into graveyard soil, the clash of two storming titans in the sky, a battle that had felt more like dream - nightmare - then memory.

[break][break] Suddenly, his throat felt dry.

[break][break] So he's relieved then when the topic changes, back to the VITAL CITY TOURNAMENT and lam logan. Things that he's much happier discussing, because it's much more grounded in reality. At least his reality.
