keep any unseemly parties out. away. that is the task that fern set out with earlier that day. there are no squadrons at their beck and call. not this time.[break][break]
they've made no request for extra numbers. that will only bog them down.[break][break]
their purpose isn't to run over any bases or lead charges this time around. instead, they take on the subtler task of getting a lay of the land.[break][break]
it is much more fun to chase away pesky interlopers, after all.[break][break]
the ones who think they can sneak in like little rattata intent on building hidden nests.[break][break]
of course, they have also laid their own proactive measures out too.[break][break]
idly, they watch and wait from the lazy perch of a large tree branch for anyone who might step just a bit too far into the unseen charge of an ELECTRIC TERRAIN that they have infused with the space around them.[break][break]
sure, there might be shocks and flickers of snapping, sparking light that give it away here and there. to those who are paying attention. but if one doesn't look closely, they might just miss it.[break][break]

there is a tension in his shoulders, one that is rarely - if ever - there.

[break][break] for anyone who knew him, ollie morales was known to be almost painfully optimistic. always being light-hearted, always expecting the best of things. until recently, it would've been him comforting a skeptical annalise henderson.

[break][break] but the battle of sootopolis had left many injuries, not all of them visible, and the same could be said true for the league's head ranger. he glanced at his friend as she reached for him. she was one of the few that he would let see the torrent of emotions that currently crossed his face.

[break][break] "i don't know. it has to be - or they're running from something, just like it was with meteno. pokemon don't just - "

[break][break] before he could finish his train of thought, however, there was a sudden disturbance. this one way more palpable than the absence of pokemon.

[break][break] a lone Pidgey soars through the air above, briefly catching Ollie’s attention as it nears the forest's edge—or it would have, had it not been struck by a sudden jolt of electricity, plummeting from the sky.

[break][break] ollie's eyes widen.

[break][break] "what the hell?"

[break][break] he's running for the fallen creature - and the invisible barrier - before he knows what's happening.

ollie's concerns cut away as he's distracted by something. annalise follows his pinned attention to the fleeing pidgey, feeling the very same bolt of shock race through her as electricity singes along its wings and grounds it. ollie has none of her ugly hypervigilance — he just sees an injured pokemon and rushes for it as her mind spins with a thousand scenarios. [break][break]"ollie!"[break][break]her hand snaps out to try and stop him, but his momentum is already propelling him across the grass toward the trap laid out ahead. she follows after, but her eyes are everywhere but on the head ranger in front of her. she's scanning the canopy ahead, she's turning her head on a swivel in search of something unperceivable. [break][break]"mew — protect him!"[break][break]the air above him warps as the psychic-type sheds its invisibility. its large eyes flash, but no attack follows. instead, it withholds, waiting for the decisive moment to strike or defend.

They hear the pair first, and then they are able to sense them. They haven’t fully come into view, but Fern can see them through the trees. At the sacrifice of their own comfort they concentrate on the hum of electricity that moves through and around them. The dial in their mind ticks up, and pain flares under their skin, but they grit their teeth and look closely. There, through the trees, is the source of the commotion. The infrared glow of body heat and all of that energy flaring brightly through dense green undergrowth.

⚡ FERN DELANEY is now able to generate electricity that induces pain in his own body and/or others' within a proximity. the pain can be dialed up or dialed down.
when using this ability, fern will also be able to detect people by sensing their natural electrical charge.

[break][break]

Crouched on their perch, they tense. Waiting.[break][break]

The surge of their ELECTRIC TERRAIN pulls a pidgey from the air, and truthfully Fern would not have given it a second glance had it not pulled the attention of one ranger—luring him in closer. A smile splits wide across their face, and they wait for the moment he steps too close. Electricty crackles and spider webs upward, eager to meet his feet.[break][break]

Only they’re focus stops short, attention swiveling back to the other presence.[break][break]

The cadence of her shout rings…familiar. Their gaze sharpens as their head tilts. The movement is near animalistic—not unlike the trill of a purrloin catching sight of a starly outside the window.[break][break]

Fern snaps their fingers and the sound is like a crack of sound in the quiet. But they’re no longer on the tree branch. The speed that carries them down and closer to the source of the disturbance is no more than a blink. The space before annalise henderson and ollie morales is empty, and then they are there. Still just within the terrain, daring the two to step closer, onto to their turf.[break][break]

Like a bolt from the blue.[break][break]

“Well well,” they drawl, their hand finding their chin to cup it as they observe annalise henderson. “The rat is back.” Their gaze flits skyward to Mew, and they recall the last time they encountered the ranger and her charge. The blessing of their new gift, and the spread of all that pain. Synapses on fire before she plummeted into the cold waters swallowing up Sootopolis.[break][break]

The same hand that cradles their chin shifts to cover their mouth, blue eyes alight with faux shock and understanding. “Back for more? I had no idea you were a glutton for punishment, Blondie.”[break][break]

Coolly, they survey Ollie, “And the Head Ranger too? How exciting~” Their mouth splits in a toothy smile void of true congeniality as a dusk ball rolls into their hand. Worn from years of use, scratched on the surface, but indicative of a lifetime of companionship. Cecilia hisses as she is released from the ball, citrine eyes pinning to the man immediately. “Happy to see a familiar face?” they trill to the dragapult as her lips curl to reveal needle teeth.[break][break]

They were masked on Mt. Pyre the day Meteno descended over Hoenn, and again when they encountered Ollie in the deep sea. But they had to wonder if he would know them now, with still no love lost between them.[break][break]

[break][break] but it's too late. caught between them is a person that even ollie morales can recognize — someone that he's met too many times before, on the battlefield. just before the meteor, with annalise henderson, the painful reminder of his staraptor's death. in the ultra deep sea alongside Caleb Harcourt and against NEON (mint frost). he grits his teeth.

[break][break] "what... what are you doing here?"

[break][break] his body tense, hands gripped around his own pokeball. the league's colors of the sphere matches his own ranger uniform, but it too is scratched with used, love and worn.

[break][break] beside him, his jolteon crackles with electricity, teeth bared as it glares at their sudden foe.

[break][break] "fall back," he says, mouth forced into a stubborn frown. "it's two against one. you don't stand a chance."

[break][break] but even as he said it, he doubted himself.

[break][break] could they really hold them back?

from nowhere, they appear. annalise draws up short, her breath catching in her throat. she can feel it, almost — the ghost of the pain she had felt in sootopolis, a reprimand from her brain for being so close to them. terror pools in her blue eyes, but then they call her blondie and it's all the flint she needs to spark the embers of anger. it gives her something to hold onto that isn't fear. and she takes it, white-knuckled. [break][break]her eyes narrow, alight with her contempt. it warms through her, thawing fear-frozen limbs. she hears ollie, just barely over her racing thoughts, telling them to fall back. [break][break]fall back? [break][break] her mind falls silent, poring over the kind gesture of warning, the thinly-veiled threat. a muscle flexes in her jaw, betraying her defiance through clenched teeth. she isn't going to let them fall back even if they concede to ollie — she's going to kill them. [break][break] "psychic!"[break][break]mew's eyes glow as its power concentrates. an invisible hand snaps out for fern's ankle to try to drag them down to the electrified ground they stand on.

The arrival of Ollie's jolteon earns a tilt of their head. They bat their eyes at him, and take in the warning before a bright laugh lights up the terrain as hotly as the electricity that still simmers in the air. "Am I meant to be scared of you?"[break][break]

They snap their fingers and the dragapult moves. Phantasmic and unnatural as she slithers through the air - jaws opening wide as flame licks at the back of her throat before the FIRE BLAST propels outward at his jolteon.[break][break]

The snap of a psychic cord yanking their ankles out from under them catches Fern unaware, no matter the speed they are blessed with. it was not mew that their sight had turned upward for, but the arrival of their own patron. the air whistles from their lungs as they hit the dirt. the electricity doesn't faze them - only the impact.[break][break]

"bad idea, blondie," they hiss, and their blue eyes narrow at her before their snarling mouth twists into that sharp, vulpine grin of theirs. jackal-mawed as they seek retribution for the petty slight.[break][break]

⚡ FERN DELANEY is now able to generate electricity that induces pain in his own body and/or others' within a proximity. the pain can be dialed up or dialed down. when using this ability, fern will also be able to detect people by sensing their natural electrical charge.

[break][break]

but it is not annalise henderson they set their eyes upon as their hands twist together, claw-like in their conjuring, to hone in on the humming static of pain as it thickens in the air. nor is it mew.[break][break]

their sights pin on ollie morales instead. they manipulate the generated pain and seize it in their mind. as the sensation dulls throughout their own nervous system, they picture the dial steadily ticking upward in the head ranger's to reach fever pitch.[break][break]

it won't be until he is wracked with the feeling of his body turning traitor that their wild eyes drift back to Annalise as they rise to their feet once more.[break][break]

they are of the same mind here: there is no falling back here.[break][break]

they know it. she knows it.[break][break]

and this is a lesson that Ollie will learn too.[break][break]

they hold that invisible tether in their hand, and it doesn't go slack. he is granted no reprieve.[break][break]

or perhaps it is annalise who holds the tether.[break][break]

this the choice fern presents her with. it is only a matter of her response.

[break][break] a PIN-MISSILE shoots out wildly, set aflame with the other's attack.

[break][break] in the chaos, out of the corner of his eye, MEW suddenly bolts forward and lancing PSYCHIC shoots forward from annalise henderson's command. ollie's attention snapped betwen the two attacks, torn, unable to decide where to turn. and then, then everything goes wrong.

[break][break] his entire world goes white with pain.

[break][break] he screams, worse than when ameena abadi set him on fire.

[break][break] the head ranger's knees buckle from the effort, as his vision blanks from the pain, and he crumples against the sand beneath him, body convulsing, while fern delaney takes advantage of his heart — twisting all the goodness into nothing more than ashes and cinder-dust.

"ollie?"[break][break] her voice rises, high and sharp with panic, as he hits the ground. she knows, even if she had never glimpsed the gesture fern is making, that he's experiencing what she had in sootopolis. instinct compels her to drop to her knees and try to help him, but it's a futile endeavor. she has to deal with them. [break][break]her gaze snaps toward fern, mirroring them with a wild-eyed look of her own. blue eyes, dark and apocalyptic, promising ruin as ollie writhes in the dirt. [break][break]i will kill you.[break][break] she takes a decisive step in their direction.[break][break]"stop it," she demands, anger tightening her throat around the words. "let him go!"[break][break]mew looks back at ollie, chirping in distress at his condition, then at annalise as she advances towards fern. the psychic-type surges forward, seamlessly transforming into a perfect copy of biscuit. [break][break]it wastes no time in its new body — its four paws hit the floor, then it kicks off its back legs to launch itself at the admin, teeth bared to try and bite them and break their concentration long enough to spare ollie from more pain.

A shrill, reptilian sound vibrates in Ceci’s throat, her tail lashing behind her in fury as the burst of heated pin missiles shoot outward toward her, several embedding themselves in the gaps of her smooth scales. But she is far from done with the jolteon. Eyes aglow, the dragapult unleashes a cloud of dragon breath at the smoking biscuit.[break][break]
With luck, the paralytic agent in her breath will take hold before she dives in again.[break][break]
But Fern is not watching the ensuing conflict between pokemon. Their eyes shift to ollie morales as the screaming begins, and their smile widens as it greets annalise henderson. [break][break]
They mull over her furious words, head tilting from side to side in consideration. But they do not relent. “Should I?” they ask her, rife with coy sarcasm. “You don’t think he can take it? Would you like to instead?”[break][break]
Fern’s hands twist together with intent to amplify the sensation, though it’s for show. They really only need their mind for this skill. “Perhaps you should be the one who falls back. This is your turf anymore.”[break][break]
But this isn’t about the territorial dispute, is it?[break][break]
This is about Fern’s desire to play with whatever they catch, like a meowth with a particularly tricky ratatta. And they’re not certain they would like Annalise to relent. That would make for a boring game, no?[break][break]
Tapu Koko watches Mew as it transforms, but as it braces for attack, it dives for Fern instead.[break][break]
The admin’s teeth grit around a muffled sound of pain as the false jolteon’s fangs tear into the flesh of his arm, through the sleeve. It’s just enough to sever their focus–freeing ollie morales from the steady flow of pain as it rolls back into their own body instead. As their blood spurts up in a spray across their face, however, they make no effort to shake mew free.[break][break]
Instead, the pained sound warps into a laugh.[break][break]
Annalise charges them, and Fern laughs in the face of it. This is what they wanted, after all. For her to get just close enough for it to matter. [break][break]
The humming energy around them thickens as they find the control and turn it down. Their firing synapses slow until they feel so little, those sharp teeth are no more than the whisper of a tickle. Just enough for them to know it’s there, but not enough to give it much mind–no matter how much damage the attack does on their arm.[break][break]
Above them, Tapu Koko’s mask has come together–crackling with the mingling intensity of electricity and z-energy. The glow around their patron swells and then it hurtles downward as Fern hoists their arm out and up–an effort to pull mew!jolteon’s paws off the ground before it lets go.[break][break]
A prime target for the island guardian to aim at with the sharp prods of the beak of its mask (paralysis parry.) Maybe it will actually manage to skewer the rat through this time.
[break][break]

paralysis parry (z-move): when tapu koko brings its shield together, it begins to charge mass amounts of electricity so that its pincers can then be used as sharpened, high-voltage prods until it lands an attack.

this pain is different. it is unlike anything he's ever experienced before.

[break][break] different from the pain that he experienced in childhood, in harmless circumstantial things like a wild ponyta accidentally throwing him off course, or getting dunk face-first into lake-water by his brothers. different from the harsh way that sometimes ranger training could be — getting scuffed knees and ankles, thrown from trees, getting a mouthful of mud. different from the way cuts and burns and scorch-marks could sometimes be. different from the way - even - those flames had burned him alive in sootopolis city.

[break][break] it was pain on a whole different level — soundless, unending, eternal wrath.

[break][break] his screams become silent to even his own ears, as the white noise takes over.

[break][break] here, there is no Yuina Higashi to save him and his inconsequential life.

[break][break] there is only suffering.

[break][break] biscuit peals in distress as ollie writhes on the floor, but there's no time to go to him. a DRAGON BREATH cuts through the air towards him, it's flames the same color as annalise henderson's apocalyptic, hateful gaze, as the mauville captain launches mew at their opponent. a DISCHARGE explodes haphazardly from the pokemon, trying to edge off some of the pain from the incoming attack and also provide a rebuttal as it's thrown backwards into the dirt.

[break][break] Blood splatters as a transformed Mew makes purchase into fern delaney's foreharm, relinquishing Ollie from an endless slaughter of pain.

[break][break] The Head Ranger gasps —

[break][break] "Anna! Anna - we have to - "

[break][break] He stumbles to his feet, vision foggy. He grapples for his belt again, eyes sharp, as he notices the calm way that fern delaney regards Anna, even as she turns towards him.

[break][break] No.

[break][break] "Anna!"

[break][break] His Wyrdeer appears, suddenly, it's bright blue horns glowing with light as it expends it's Z-MOVE attack.

with each step, annalise's world narrows in on fern delaney. she doesn't see the blurred shape of mew lunging in to deliver a nasty bite. she doesn't feel the air crackle with electricity upon tapu koko's arrival. she doesn't hear ollie screaming her name over and over in a desperate attempt to stop the momentum of war. [break][break]it's just her.[break][break] and fern.[break][break] and the shrinking distance between. [break][break]mt. pyre. the prison. sootopolis. each encounter more damaging than the last. she won't let it happen again — especially not to ollie, whose only transgression is being at the wrong place at the wrong time. z-moves live and die around them. mew senses the sudden surge of electricity and the distraction is enough for fern to lift it off the ground. ollie's wyrdeer prevents tapu koko's promised skewering, but mew is thrown aside nonetheless. [break][break]and in the legendary pokemon's place, capitalizing on the chaos erupting all around them, annalise's hand shoots out to claim hair or throat or arm or anything she might be able to close a white-knuckled fist around. [break][break] "try it again!" she snarls, ragged and furious. she yanks, hard. "it'll be the last fucking thing you do! go ahead and give mew a reason to stop holding back!"[break][break]mew sheds its bloodstained fur like snakeskin, transforming back into itself. it flies into the air, forming a bubble around itself. [break][break] "do you want to die by your own god? or someone else's? pick one! pick!"

The flare of the jolteon’s discharge lights up the space—panicked and strengthened by the terrain underfoot. A volley of dragon darts fire off from the dragapult just before the electricity reaches her. Before she can swerve out of the way, it crackles up over her limbs. Stunning her as she drops to the ground in an unconscious heap.[break][break]
Somewhere, outside of their vision tunneling on annalise henderson, they can hear ollie morales shouting to her. Attempting to prevent something that has long been set in motion. A button that Fern has continued to press finally yields detonation.[break][break]
The eruption of the starry shield flares up, and Tapu Koko’s attack is buffered and rendered useless, much to their guardian’s fury. It twists in the air—bouncing as their shield snaps up in what looks like an impassioned war dance. Its sights turn on the wydeer, and an electro ball hurtles outward at it in retaliation before it turns furious eyes on the head ranger.[break][break]
But Fern is only watching as Annalise closes the distance. They barely notice Mew’s vulpine jaws detaching from their arm.[break][break]
They barely register the sensation of their hair being pulled, muted as their pain is. But Fern knows that it is being yanked as hard as Annalise can manage, because their head is forced backward with the motion. The suddenness of the jerking movement causes them to bite the inside of their mouth hard enough to taste the copper tang of blood as it coats their tongue. Wild eyes roll down toward hers and their hand reaches up to close around her wrist.[break][break]
Laughter spills like water from their lips, pinkish froth bubbling up between their teeth.[break][break]
“Try what again? I didn’t touch him.” They shrug, the lie is an obvious one—not meant to be anything other than obvious goading. Briefly, their eyes shift away from her, up to where Mew has encased itself in a bubble of safety. “Is Mew capable of that violence, though? Or will you bend it to your will? Tsk tsk, the manipulation of pokemon for your gain.”[break][break]
Their gaze goes cool as it returns to her. Similar shades, but hers burn. An ocean set ablaze with intent. “All you need add is for the glory of Rocket and you’ll fit right in.”[break][break]
“Pick one! pick!”[break][break]
Blood continues to congeal in their mouth as she howls her ultimatum. Their chin tips back just a little bit more—defiant, as they suck it back and spit it in her face.[break][break]
On her demands.[break][break]
Neither, is a far more appealing choice, after all.
