You've known the streets all your life. Sure, your mom did her best to raise you, but whores can't provide a kid with stability. You know what it means when your mom brings home a new man. Stay in your room and don't come out until you hear three knocks. It's a message that you and your mom came up with. She didn't want you around the men that she brought home, and you never knew why.

It wasn't wise for your mother to bring them home, but it was cheaper than some sleazy motel.

Where teeth couldn't gnash, you used your body for money. (They don't make a soap strong enough to wash away how disgusted you are with yourself for it. You feel ashamed.) Where those two factors couldn't play, there was always theft. You were just a petty criminal by the age of twenty. But twenties are meant for being a little reckless.

That's when you get yourself involved with some loudmouth who won't stop swinging his fists around. A bar brawl is enough to settle your differences. You can respect someone who can knock your block off, so after you get your nose to stop bleeding, the two of you bond over drinks.

Jack Magnus. It's a name you won't forget. Dude's got some dreams, and you can respect it. His parents are shit, the least you can do is offer him some sympathy and share your mom and your home with him. (It's pretty cliché to say, but the guy becomes the brother you never had.)

How easy it'd be to just be at the thrall of a desk job or work the drive thru. (The second's all your teachers ever said you'd be good for anyway. Fuck that place, you're glad you dropped out.) But dreams are what kept the two of you connected. He had your back and you had his.
