It was always because he had something to do, someplace to be. When he did use it for its own sake, it was usually to kick back, relax, and enjoy the world blurring by, rather than for a competition. "I'd still win, though. There's nothing alive that's gonna catch me."[break][break]

With a proud smile, he gave Eris' hair a quick, affectionate ruffle. "Well, almost nothing."[break][break]

It wasn't just blind faith, either. Whether adventuring together, combat training, or even goofy little games like this, Eris always rose to the occasion. For all her doubts in herself, the girl was capable of so much more than she gave herself credit for. Heck, when it came to books, half the time she was the one helping him![break][break]

He wondered if she knew just how often she'd done that.

It was funny. For all their lives had been touched by legends, they never let it consume them. Far more Pokemon than just Suicune and Mesprit held positions of honor in their lives. Hell, with how stubborn and willful those two were, Isaac and Eris were probably away from them more often than not![break][break]

Instead, they had their own ways of showing they cared.[break][break]

"Pretty sure if I sent out every Pokemon I wanted to bring along, there wouldn't be any room left to skate," Isaac mused, a fond smile on his face. "That means you gotta party a hundred times as hard in their honor, alright, Twitch?"[break][break]

The Galarian mismatch wiggled her tiny arms in affirmation.[break][break]

"We could always spin in circles till we're all dizzy." Even a joking smile carries a hint of seriousness, her eyes gleaming at the very thought. "Or we could go on an adventure to look for a place big enough for all of us to skate! Like the crystal sea!"

[attr="class","textbox"]Luckily for Reiner, Isaac was well accustomed to Halla family nonsense by now. Reiner would get all the scritches he wanted from Isaac. Who knows? Maybe the poor thing would end up pancaking right there on the ice. If that as the case, Isaac and Eris would be in for some trouble. A lazy Reiner was nigh-impossible to lift.[break][break]

"Oh, man. If I knew we were adventuring, I totally would've packed a bigger lunch," Isaac half-joked. There wasn't a lot of room to go adventuring when all they had to work with was a teeny little pond. Nevertheless, the idea of adventuring through the ice and snow now that he could no longer feel their biting chill was an appealing one.[break][break]

Maybe during better times.[break][break]

"But if I don't have a lunch, then I can't lose it, now can I?" Oh no. This was a horrendous idea. Isaac briefly disentangled himself from Eris and Reiner, kicking off to the middle of the pond. He wedged his heels against the ice, starting to rub them back and forth. He may not have had blades, but he could still fake it 'til he made it. "You know what that means . . ."[break][break]

With a dramatic flourish, he started to twirl. "Last one to stop spinning's a rotten egg-!" he called, his voice seeming to drift away along the breeze as he began a whirling blur.[break][break]

There was no way in Hell that this could end well.

Before Reiner can tilt his head for a scritch right behind his other ear, Isaac pulls away, leaving him disgruntled and glaring at the man. And Eris laughs at the sight, leaning on him and pulling herself closer to give him that good ol' scritch herself.[break][break]

If he wants to spin for the bit, who is she to stop him? She knows for certain that she isn't going to try because once she falls on the ice, she won't be able to pick herself up and her ass is gonna to get uncomfortably cold. Instead she looks up, watching as molded clouds slip and slide across the icy blue sky.[break][break]

Blue like her mother's eyes. Like her father's... Like paxton concordas...[break][break]

Dropping her gaze, she leans deeper into Reiner's mane and frowns.

Oh. She wasn't even watching anymore, was she?[break][break]

As if the power had been snatched from him, Isaac's dizziness caught up to him. His spinning slowed, leaving him gracelessly stumbling as he made his way back over to Eris. With his water-walking abilities, he seemed to slip and slide across the ice even moreso than usual. The poor guy had practically zigged and zagged across the frozen pond's surface by the time he finally reached his little sis.[break][break]

It was just in time to see the girl's frown, etched on her features as she lost herself in her thoughts.[break][break]

"Hey, you," he said, peeking down at her from the other side of Reiner's wild mane. "You've got a lot on your mind too, huh?"

Reiner, on the other hand, is the same as ever, grunting at just how they two seem to treat him like a great wall. Which he is at times, but right now, he's feeling a little cheeky as he raises his head a little to bop Isaac's chin.

Eris was a lot less good at hiding her feelings than she thought she was. Her mood swings tended to make themselves quite obvious. People tended not to go from giggling about adventures all around the world to morosely hiding their faces for no reason.[break][break]

At the same time, it was clear Eris didn't want to call too much attention to the big shift. Perhaps that was why, instead of just saying Eris was wrong about herself, he just pointed out what he could see.[break][break]

"You don't gotta talk about it if you don't wanna, you know." His voice was as gentle as the way he cheekily bopped Reiner back. "Just know that, if you need to, you always can. I'm always gonna be here for you, except when you don't want me to be. And even then, soon as you need me again, I'll be right back for you."[break][break]

"That okay?"

That look on his face, still clear as day. In that very instant she'd spoken those words, everything had changed.[break][break]

"I'm a really bad person... I'm so messed up in the head that I can't even trust my own brother. Can you believe it? My very own brother, who held my hand when I was just a baby. And was there for me growing up."[break][break]

But the war had taken it all. Her heart. Her head. And with her own two hands, she had destroyed whatever remained of their bond.[break][break]

"I couldn't trust him.... and I said all those horrible things. And he probably doesn't think I'm his sister anymore."[break][break]

Once upon a time, Isaac had been an angry young man. Nearly two years spent in the warzone that is Hoenn gave him far more perspective. However, the memories of those old days still gnawed at the back of his head. If he'd spent his past more constructively, instead of wandering from burned bridge to burned bridge, who knows how much better off he'd be?[break][break]

And to think, in spite of all of that, he was barely a fraction as haunted as Eris had become.[break][break]

"Eris-" he started, nearly the second she began, but he clamped down on his tongue before the rest could come tumbling out. This was her story. This was her time to speak. Even if hearing her call herself an awful person stung, he couldn't cut her off. Not until she was done.[break][break]

It was only when she finished that he slipped around Reiner, pulling Eris in for a warm, protective hug. That alone, he hoped, would be all the assurance she'd need that he wasn't going anywhere. Yet, even then, he spoke.[break][break]

"You never had the chance to build that trust," he pointed out, painfully aware of just how small the girl had been when her life was turned upside down. "The people that raised you were the people that hurt you most. And you don't know if you want to hate them or love them after all that. And you're afraid no matter which answer you pick, it's gonna be the wrong one."[break][break]

"How can you trust anyone, when that's the burden that's been put on you?"[break][break]

For Eris, family was pain. Friend was foe. The League, the only people who could have helped her through all of this, imprisoned her instead. Her life had been turned upside down more times than she could count, and at this point she feared people so much that she could never open enough to be helped with it.[break][break]

"There's times you stressed me out, that's for shit sure. But you're the best kid I've ever known, and I'm never going anywhere, alright?" He ruffled her hair with a soft, gentle hand, smiling down at her all the while. "It might do you some good to unpack it one day. But I know that's a big, scary thing. So we're not gonna rush it."[break][break]

"Just know, if the time comes, you're not gonna have to face it alone."
