This was the Gym Leader of Rustboro City. Despite being dense in more ways than one, Roy was aware of this. He had heard of Cian's expertise. Even if this wasn't a proper Gym Battle, the draconid could still measure his own might on the battlefield.

With both hands stationed in his pockets, a stream of light beckons a charizard to the arena. A violent growl initiates combat between the two.

Roy didn't mean any harm by his words. That's just how he talked. He just wasn't one for pleasantries, even if this was the Rustboro Gym Leader in the best-looking cosplay at the event.

"Get him."

He's straight to the point. Balmung reacts by trying to maneuver through the Smokescreen. Using both his wings and his claws, the dragon attempts to dig through the fumes only to encounter the small blue frog on the other side. Just as the amphibian barfs up his attack, the charizard launches his fist covered in electricity.

The exchange could go either way.

the early lead goes to Roy Aker as charizard manages to claw its way through to find froakie. froakie should've known better than to simply hide; it needs to go on the offensive.[break][break]

recovering from the THUNDER PUNCH, froakie slips to the side and bounces up, slamming into charizard's belly with a SMACK DOWN.[break][break]

Where the amphibian lacks in strength, it succeeds in agility. As Balmung is in the process of reeling back from its successful attack, the ninja frog is already on the move. There's little time to react but the charizard tries anyway. He charges another jab, but this one is powered by the way of dragons instead of thunder.

"Tch."

Revealing a fist from one of his pockets, a sudden burst of infinity energy is unleashed around the trainer. A small marble hidden in his palm initiates a transformation within his partner pokemon. In a similar way to Roy's hand, Balmung explodes into an assortment of colors. A sudden gust of wind removes the exterior and a black demon is revealed upon the battlefield.

He continues his attack all the same, but this time it's faster. His jaws unleash a blue flame similar to the energy surrounding his knuckles.

mirroring Roy Aker's movements, froakie reaches into its pocket as well and pulls out a small marble, but when it tosses it into the ground, a SMOKESCREEN puffs out instead of INFINITY ENERGY.[break][break]

using the cover of SMOKESCREEN, froakie avoids the blue flames and leaps to the side, vomiting HYDRO PUMP instead.[break][break]

This wasn't how it was supposed to go. Mega Evolution was meant to be an increase in power. Clearly, Balmung wasn't ready. Neither was Roy. Even if they were going to lose, at least they could practice with a powerful trainer with a ninja motif.

The charizard shields himself with a wing, but his new dragon-type isn't enough to protect him from the attack.

"Don't let him get the jump on you."

His orders are open and abstract, but Balmung understands them. This time his entire body is charged with a blue aura and he strikes the smoke with a full-body tackle.

open and abstract is the way to go it seems as Roy Aker gets the jump on cian and froakie. after shielding itself with a wing, charizard returns with vengeance, seeking froakie's little throat as it TACKLES through the SMOKESCREEN.[break][break]

when the two pokemon appear out the other end, froakie's clinging on for dear life as its tongue is suction cupped to charizard's head, LICKING away.[break][break]

Balmung twists and turns, blinded by his new amphibian blindfold. With his claws, he attempts to remove the tangled tongue, but he cannot reach it. Even with his jaws, he attempts to blow flames but it is tied shut. He's powerless to the ninja frog.

"Break free, already!"

Roy is embarrassed and that's where their synchronization ends. After a subtle glow, the charizard is returned to his original form but the froakie is still latched onto his face. Engulfing his head with another flame of blue, he tries a new method. He swings his head downward towards the arena floor. Obviously, he might hurt himself in the process, but maybe he could hurt the froakie too.

This was the one final blow to determine it all. The results of this exchange would establish a winner between the dragon and the ninja frog.

A loud bang could be heard across the arena, but nothing could be seen. Everything was covered in smoke caused by the smokescreen. Balmung's roar escapes the smog, but it reveals no details about the battle. This could be anyone's game. There was no way to tell until the smoke was clear.

Like Cian, Roy stays quiet. He trusts his partner pokemon, but the suspense takes a little bit of a toll on him. Even if he does lose, at least he was able to test the effects of Mega Evolution.

That's all it took. Ultimately, the battle was close but froakie came out on top. How embarrassing.

Unlike most trainers that rush to assist their defeated partners, Roy appears unconcerned. The trainer walks across the arena towards his charizard, but very slowly. With a gentle kick, he nudges his dragon.

"Get up."

There was no time to rest. If they wanted to truly master the power of Mega Evolution, they needed to participate in more battles.

Instead of replying to the cosplay ninja, the draconid only returns a wave and a fake smile. Even if he was unhappy with the results of the battle, he wouldn't make it completely obvious.
