Onyx wasn't operating under his given name for the tournament. He'd gone back and forth about signing up for a long time. Moral dilemma and historical scars aside, he'd obviously decided to take part, as was made evident by his standing here.

The substitute smacks to the ground with a squeaky-toy noise and Lucan does a double take, narrowing his eyes and glaring at the offending article in confusion.

Onyx touches the mega-stone in his pocket. Underneath where the Froakie is plastered to Lucan’s back, wings burst through the carapace, sending a spray of olive-green blood skyward. Onyx isn’t entirely sure what happens next. Lucan’s got the Froakie dead to rights, poised to deliver a disastrously hard hit, and somehow, he misses. The bug crashes into the ground and is hit with recoil, causing his trainer to inhale and exhale measuredly through his nose to keep his temper.

They still have a little bit more juice left in the Mega-Evolution, so Lucan picks himself up, dusts himself off, and tries to reverse people’s elbow the slippery frog with superpower.

A long, long time ago, Onyx was the type of person-- the type of trainer-- who would get mad about things like this. His Pokemon’s constant stream of failures would have riled him up to an angry, fever pitch, and the poor creatures would have born the brunt of his temper, not in any true physical or verbal abuse, mind, but simply in the mere act of repetitive training until perfection was achieved, the sting of this failure burnt deep into their tired bones, so as not to forget it.

Today, Onyx merely cranks one side of his mouth up in a confused look, then exhales a short, humorless laugh, and recalls his Pokemon. There are more battles to fight, and certainly more failure to be wrought, and at the end of it all they’ll come back and go through it, as a team.

He does wonder where the old Onyx went. Wonders if he’s dead in the ground, somewhere.
