Oh, you're cute," Nabi immediately said when she saw the fellow pink-haired girl, wholehearted in her statement. She was like a doll with her oversized frames against her button nose. "I almost feel bad about having to destroy you." Nabi reached out, as if to pat the (unbeknownst to her) older woman's head. "No hard feelings?"[break][break]

Adorable or not, Nabi wasn't the type to show mercy. Once introductions were out of the way, she walked to the other side. A drop of water hit against her bare shoulder, hinting at the oncoming rain. Her swampert welcomed the falling water.

Being mistaken as younger than she was, well, wasn't exactly an unusual thing for Marianne Lovelace. She was petite, her frazzled anxiety made her seem constantly a few years short of the maturity that approaching thirty supposedly endowed on a person, and enmeshment with an overbearing mother had taught her to be a little too yielding for a grown woman.[break][break]

Which is to say that when nabi park patted her on the head, the sentiment wasn't a wholly surprising one, though it was still surprising. And flattering? Being cute was flattering, usually.[break][break]

"That's nice of you to say..." She blinked, the rest of the introduction slowly registering. "...pardon, what was that about destroying things?"[break][break]

Her Klefki swerved onto the field, droplets of rainwater shimmering off her metallic rings as she prepared for battle!

Nabi dismissed her own comment with a shake of her hand. "Oh, don't worry about it," she replied to Marianne. "Anyways, good luck." Nabi retreated to her side of the field while Bruno took his place.[break][break]

"Klefki, huh?" The pink-haired woman muttered to herself in thought, trying to consider the strengths and weaknesses of they keychain pokemon. "Use your SUPERSONIC, Bruno," Nabi decided on, this time choosing to begin things with simplicity.[break][break]

Bruno excelled in mid to long-range attacks, and she suspected the klefki was the same. At her request, the swampert focused his first move on producing a high-pitched SUPERSONIC to throw the opposing klefki off her A-game.[break][break]

Marianne could have sworn the other woman said something about destroying her. Had she imagined it, though? Her opponent otherwise seemed so nice![break][break]

Yeah, maybe she was imagining things. Surely this person couldn't be as competitive as CIAN MAHER, right? ...Right?[break][break]

One ranged attack met with another! A gentle chiming noise preceded the arrival of a FAIRY WIND as the Klefki attempted to weather the confusion of SUPERSONIC, hoping not to hit herself in confusion.[break][break]

The FAIRY WIND, though simple, chilled the air and made Bruno's skin tingle like needles plucking away at him. He shook it off quickly.[break][break]

Nabi gave the next order--MUDDY WATER. All around him, water piled up seemingly out of no where and moved in strong currents. Bruno directed the waves towards the klefki from a distance.[break][break]

The bespectacled woman flinched as MUDDY WATER splashed across the battlefield -- and across her cashmere sweater! Ugh, this was dry clean only, too. What a bother. Why did she think to dress up for something like this?![break][break]

So silly. She should have worn sweatpants and a T-shirt. This was a sport, after all.[break][break]

Her Klefki let out a soft chime of distress as the filthy water sought to muck up and rust her metal, resounding as a defensive METAL SOUND![break][break]

The METAL SOUND was more bothersome than anything else, like an annoying itch that couldn't be reached. It may not have physically hurt the swampert as an actual attack would have, but it was successful in lowering Bruno's defensive capabilities, little to the swampert's realization.[break][break]

Nabi did know though and suspected her opponent would fire off with an attack next. They had to be ready.[break][break]

"Surround it with a ROCK SLIDE!" Nabi told Bruno.[break][break]

As commanded, Bruno began to lift and throw rocks towards the klefki, specifically aiming to enclose it in a ring.[break][break]

Bruno slid across the muddy ground, using it to his advantage to move across the field with speed. The swampert continued sliding, finding himself behind the klefki. Before she could retaliate, Bruno made his attempt to bring his opponent down with a power-pumped HYDRO PUMP.[break][break]

The FLASH CANNON forced Bruno to shut his eyes and teeter on his feet. Unfortunately, his last attack hadn't been enough, and now, he himself was on the verge of losing this battle. Another attack like that from the klefki and he could be out.[break][break]

Bruno's final attack was unleashed in a full-frontal MUDDY WATER, trying to use the scope of the attack to his advantage.[break][break]

This was it! The final round! The final blow! What an expectedly heart-pounding battle this had been.[break][break]

The MUDDY WATER sprayed in all directions, coating the Klefki in its icky sludge, but Angel fought back with a mighty FAIRY WIND that swirled with a newfound strength given the closeness of the battle.[break][break]

Whatever happened next, both Pokemon were giving it their all.[break][break]

Bruno covered his face to protect against the FAIRY WIND. Nabi was just about to give the next order when she heard the referee call the match. Nabi sighed in relief. It had been another close battle for her and Bruno and one of their few wins.[break][break]

She walked out to where her swampert stood and praised him for a job well done. "Your klefki was stronger than it seemed," she said to Marianne Lovelace, genuine in her words. Pokemon always found a way of surprising her, no matter their appearance or their size. "It was a fun battle. Good luck in your next one."[break][break]

She bowed her head and then turned on her heel, exiting the battlefield with her swampert by her side.

"You and your Swampert were so in-sync, it was impressive," Marianne replied, equally genuine as well as the battle concluded. Her early jitters about battling had evaporated, and she'd begun to just start enjoying the rhythm that battles naturally fell into.[break][break]

Some people, like Nabi, seemed to have an inherent understanding of that rhythm. You could just tell, sometimes.[break][break]

"Very well-earned win! I hope you continue to do well."[break][break]

As for Marianne, her next plan of action was to go get her sweater cleaned up from being in the MUDDY WATER's splash zone... Whoops.[break][break]
