nabi nodded in understanding. she had never faced danger headfront like many others had. in a way, her grandparents coddled her. she underwent strict training, but never was she in any real danger. fear, nabi began to realize, was something she had yet to experience. it was partly what made her come off as so naive to the world, and careless.[break][break]

"ooh, yeah, rangers, i've heard about you guys," nabi said, thinking hand held to her chin. enemies of team rocket. if only her grandparents could see her now, working alongside the enemy.[break][break]

her eyes were drawn to the armband's sleek design and colors. ironically, similar to the police force. but ranger had a much cooler vibe to it.[break][break]

"maybe i should get one of those things for myself?" the pink-haired woman then laughed. "if i had your armband, i could go around kicking butt and serving justice." she did like the idea of kicking butts without suffering the legal repercussions.

lately, nabi thought to herself, something didn't feel right. it was simple intuition, but the number of missing persons was concerning. she didn't know what to expect, but at her core, she could tell danger was inevitable. how was she to best avoid it? or prepare for it?[break][break]

she supposed helping was one way. money wasn't a matter of interest to her in this case. nabi valued experience more than anything, and perhaps information. maybe one of these missing cases knew what was going on? in any case, after a night of thinking, nabi decided to volunteer herself in a search party.[break][break]

and thankfully, she wasn't alone. her partner was a familiar face, though it took her a moment and a sense of deja vu to recall his name.[break][break]

"oh! we met before," she replied, finger pointed at him. it was his incineroar that sparked her memories. just like last time, he was a flustering mess then, too. "at the vct? we battled each other." she offered a smile in turn to his awkwardness.[break][break]

unlike their last encounter, her swampert did not accompany her. instead, it was her beautifly, prince, settled atop her head like a crown.[break][break]

"yeah, i remember you had a weird name," she spoke bluntly. "cookie or whatever. anyways, i'm nabi, again. this is prince." she gestured to her beautifly with her eyes. "i'm not looking for anyone myself. just thought i'd help out. be a good samaritan and all."[break][break]

it would have been natural for her to ask him the same question, but instead, she asked, "so, any clues to go off of?" they were in rusturf tunnel, and although relatively simple to navigate, that didn't mean one couldn't go missing or get lost in here.

"sorry?" there was little time for her to process what had just happened. without warning, the weight of her body was pulled low to the ground. she fell to her knees and struggled to keep the upper half of her body up. meanwhile for poppy, she laid flat with all fours spread out.[break][break]

"that cheat!" nabi spoke through grit teeth. she urged herself to get up. behind her, she could hear a few of the others laughing at her failure to even leave the starting line.[break][break]

"you're going to have to go ahead of me, poppy," nabi said to her companion, lifting the small mouse in her hands. "i'll catch up. don't let them get too ahead, hear me?"[break][break]

poppy made a mewl, uncertain what the heck her trainer was insinuating.[break][break]

nabi took two steps forward, pushing herself into the next room, and looked straight ahead. she could still see greyson's figure. "on three," she warned poppy.[break][break]

poppy suddenly had a terrible feeling.[break][break]

on the number three, her body was sent flying through the air like a baseball. she had even curled herself into a ball, truly making her seem like an oncoming object. simply out of fear, poppy released a smokescreen, covering the area and the nearby voltorb in total blackness.

nabi's nose wrinkled in response to cian's touch. "i'm waaatching," she said in a lengthy drawl, eyes back on the machine. "gimmie the torchic this time."[break][break]

the claw's jankey movements returned to life. it was lined up perfectly, seemingly about to lift one of the torchic plushies up. and it did, until it was fully reclined, and then the doll bounced back into place.[break][break]

"see!" nabi's voice projected. without even realizing it, her foot kicked the crane machine. "it's not good to get hopes up, ki-ki." she wagged her finger at him like he had done a bad thing.[break][break]

her body slumped, a little, wobbly, but she could still find her balance. her arm reached into the prize door, attempting (and utterly failing) at digging for one of the dolls. "this is how i used to win them aaalll the time."

the safari ball titled back and forth in the grass with vigorous shaking, keeping both nabi and poppy on edge. she gulped, almost reaching to her waist to prepare another ball. and then--ding![break][break]

grinning big, nabi skipped to where the ball sat. "success!" she chimed to her cyndaquil. "not a bad start, huh?" she pocketed the ball. naming her newly caught fletchling would come later. what pokemon would she find next?[break][break]

she and poppy delved deeper into the safari zone, leaving behind the open grass plains for a more rugged, barren area. it was the perfect place for rock types, or even a lone fighting type.[break][break]

her eyes fixed on the mienfoo in the middle of a training session. with each invigorated yell, it pounded its palms against a large boulder. nabi liked that kind of energy.[break][break]

her second safari ball was sent flying and hit against the mienfoo's back.[break][break]

nabi was just one of several others lined up at the starting line for the voltorb obstacle course, a training exercise provided by the league. for someone like nabi, a cadet candidate testing out the waters and wondering whether joining the league was what she truly desired, this sort of thing was right up her alley. "how hard can it be?" she thought to herself when she originally saw the posted ad for the event.[break][break]

the obstacle course was to be completed with one's pokemon partner of choice and in groups of two. nabi had chosen poppy. and beside her stood a taller gentleman of dark hair. what was his name? she glanced at him, noting his physique.[break][break]

one by one, each group was given the signal to run into the next room where the obstacle course starter. even from behind the wall, nabi could hear the faint explosions of voltorb triggering. the unknown gave her a sense of thrill.[break][break]

she and her assigned mate were called forward. they were next in line.[break][break]

"you have experience with this sort of thing?" she asked him, lips edged into a small smile. "i'm nabi, by the way."[break][break]

a countdown was given. ten seconds till their turn.[break][break]

"i hope it rains voltorb on us, or it won't be fun," she then chuckled, wholeheartedly serious in her comment.[break][break]

seven, six...[break][break]

"oh, is this supposed to be a race?" she then thought. was she supposed to prove she was better than this guy? or was this a team job? she couldn't quite remember the instructions they gave earlier.[break][break]

three, two, one...

nabi's head swung like a whip when she saw the strangely-colored fletchling take landing up ahead. "no way! a shiny?" she exclaimed in a low voice. "poppy, look!" she pointed a finger at the brown-ish bird. she had no expectations of encountering a shiny today, and of all the chances, her very first one?[break][break]

the tip of her tongue stuck out from the corner of her mouth. "how can i say no to that?" she already had a safari ball at the ready.[break][break]

poppy followed, sticking close to nabi's ankles. if cyndaquil had eyes to see into, one would be able to see the innocent curiosity in poppy.[break][break]

nabi gave herself an internal countdown. the fletchling was not dumb. it had made a sparing glance at nabi and poppy but no intention of running away as it continued to peck at the ground. the last thing nabi wanted to do was scare the thing away. on the count of three, she sent the safari ball flying, hoping luck would continue to be on her side.[break][break]

jasmine chirped in excitement when she saw nabi approach the garden. it had been much too long since nabi was able to drop by and check on her berries. she couldn't help but feel a little guilty, in fact, especially when she saw the bellossom's petals sway in dance. "hope you weren't too lonely," she said to jasmine with a small smile. jasmine replied with a joyful tune.[break][break]

despite her abscence, she could see that the bellossom was doing a job well done in tending both the berries and surrounding greenery. not only that, but there seemed to be a few other wild pokemon hanging around, none that seemed threatening. perhaps the bellossom wasn't so alone then.[break][break]

with a basket in hand, nabi began to gently pluck at the fully grown berries. thankfully none of them had turned rotten. "next time, i'll bring you a treat," nabi said to the bellossom. jasmine raised her hands and hopped in place.[break][break]

the basket was filled to the brim by the time nabi was done. the trees seemed bare now, but it would only be a few days before berries were back on the branches. "here you go," she said, tossing one of the fresh pickings to jasmine as thanks for all her hard work.[break][break]

with the berries collected, it was time to go.

"don't worry, poppy, you won't have to do too much battling here," spoke nabi to her cyndaquil. she was crouched with her hands at her knees to better talk with her much smaller pokemon. the reassurance of her trainer's words helped put some pep in poppy's steps. she was a timid one, unlike most of nabi's other pokemon. it was for that reason she brought poppy along with her today. exposure to wild pokemon, she hoped, would help the little one gain some confidence. fortunately, the safari zone did not call for intense battles.[break][break]

together, nabi and poppy took their first steps into the safari zone. grass practically littered the area, overgrown yet clean-cut. it was perfect for wild pokemon.

shoulders slumped as nabi sighed in relief. like the end of an action movie, the proper authorities were on the scene to clean up the aftermath. both of nabi's pokemon returned to her side, and both would receive a "job well done" from her before returning to the safety of their pokeballs.[break][break]

the bad guys were defeated and would be taken care of. but nabi was never going to get that money back. the thought remained on her mind, as well as her grumbling stomach.[break][break]

"huh?" she spoke up, head turning to look at the other girl. whoever she was, she acted like a pro. "oh, no problem. i mean, i kind of just acted on my own..." whether or not she was actually any help or if she had just gotten in the way was questionable. "sorry, actually," she decided to say. "you must be a cop? i should have just hid with the others."[break][break]

she gave the girl a quick glance, noting her build, age, and attire. nabi had never liked cops. she was usually the one causing trouble.
