"She's trouble. Her parents must have a handful with her." "Sit straight, Nabi!" "You're going to live with your grandparents from now on." "You're like them... aren't you?" "Why did you turn out this way?"[break][break]
Nabi inhaled sharply as her body sprung forward from sleep. She realized her skin was wet with sweat and her throat dry upon several gasps. "...why?" she practically whimpered and held her head in her hands.[break][break]
It was morning. The sunlight seemed to peel away the curtains, brightly illuminating the room and heating it aggressively. Nabi tried to calm herself in bed with simple breathing techniques, but it didn't help her parched tongue.[break][break]
She gathered herself and checked out of the Center, only to feel the waves of sun weigh heavy on her shoulders. Oldale Town would turn into a desert at this rate.[break][break]
She unlocked her phone. The screen twitched. Swipe. The screen twitched again.[break][break]
After a few taps of her thumbs, her phone made the decision to shut down, despite being at full charge. She was certain of it, at least. A disgruntled Nabi pocketed her phone and moved through the streets.[break][break]
Why did her old memories torment her? It wasn't like her to dwell on painful things.[break][break]
Her eyes shifted back and forth between people: young kids playing, older folks taking their sweet time, middle-aged women negotiating the prices of fruit. They all seemed so content. Her throat tightened.[break][break]
She stopped near a small alley and leaned against the wall. Was it the sun? She was awfully hot. Maybe she was having a heat stroke. Maybe that's what was causing her to think about her parents and her grandparents and the things they said to her and the people that continuously talked down about her behavior and she didn't meant to cause so much trouble but she hated being still and being prim and proper like her parents wanted her to. They had wanted perfection, but not in the way she could provide, and then the rest of her family had wanted her to be perfect, too, and that was when she realized she couldn't live her own life without following someone else's orders, someone else's expectations, and that was why she always acted out because she hated doing as told or maybe she like the attention or the thrill. Why did she have to listen to others? Why was her mind racing?[break][break]
Since coming to Hoenn, Nabi had been doing so much better on her own. She was starting to feel like she was coming into her own.[break][break]
A single man stood at the end of alley, frustrated that his phone seemed out of service.[break][break]
Nabi watched him, counting her heart rate and her breathing as it pounded louder in her ears. It had been awhile since she had acted out. It was an unhealthy way for her to let off steam.[break][break]
She could do it now. With no one around. A single, unsuspecting man that probably had money in a wallet somewhere on his body.[break][break]
"...birthday present..." she heard him mumble to himself in the midst of her own loud, conflicting thoughts.[break][break]
She coiled her fist. It would be quick. It would be quick.
