When Nabi first came to Hoenn, she had disembarked right here in Slateport. She remembered feeling helpless, lost, alone. When her cyndaquil was suddenly poisoned by a wild pokemon, she even considered that running away from her family had been the wrong option.[break][break]

But she had learned and grown a lot in the short amount of time since then. Now, back in Slateport, Nabi began to feel a little nostalgic. She recalled a particular green-haired man and his tangrowth. Images of herself dressed in skitty-like ears—against his wishes—returned to her mind, when she helped him at his stall. She had thought a cute girl wearing cute pokemon ears would attract more attention. She was certain she was right.[break][break]

She came in regular attire this time. No skitty ears or tail to draw in hungry men. Instead, a sneasel sat at her shoulder, curiously people-watching as they walked through the Night Market stalls, and a gift in hand.[break][break]

"There it is," she whispered to herself when she saw the apothecary's stall up ahead. She skipped the rest of the way.[break][break]

"Yoo hoo!" she announced, head popping inside to find the owner. "Remember me?" She offered a basket of goodies with an assortment of berries and plants. She couldn't forget Elijah's kindness when she felt most useless.

elijah is in the middle of hauling stuffed grow bags. he's hunched over like a drowzee or some kind of crusty, brick bridge. [break][break]

he recognizes the voice first.[break][break]

he drops the bags, the landscape fabric creasing as he draws his heavy torso straight, forearm gliding across his forehead to swipe sweat and shield him from the sun.[break][break]

"oh." elijah says. "i almost didn't recognize you without the skitty ears."[break][break]

he notices the gift basket second. [break][break]

"what is this for?" [break][break]

even the movement of generosity, of offering, is met with his stubborn skepticism.

"It's called gratitude," Nabi said slowly for him. She'd spell the word out for him, too, if he asked. She allowed herself in and set the basket on the first open counter space she saw. "As in, you have my gratitude for, uh, being a really swell guy to me." She eyed the bags on the ground. She had already assumed Elijah would be in the middle of work.[break][break]

Oh well. She liked being a distraction.[break][break]

"If you still have them, I can put them make on, nya," the pinkette joked in regards to the ears, remembering she had left them with him in case he ever wanted to use them again. She really, really tried to persuade him in wearing them. Unsuccessfully.[break][break]

Jiji jumped from Nabi's shoulders and began to explore and sniff at his own pleasure, always the curious one. Nabi came over to Elijah's side and pointed to the bags. "Should I show more of my gratitude by helping you out here?"

elijah scoffs at the praise. it tastes like soil and grit in his mouth and like a clamperl spitting nacre, he smothers the compliments with scowling.[break][break]

"don't do that." he says of her 'nya-ing'. "don't ever do that again."[break][break]

he heaves a bag from the floor as nabi's sneasel sniffs around. he would be able to smell the earthy musk. the sharp smell of bitter herbs.[break][break]

"if you want to help?"[break][break]

elijah tosses the bag toward her.[break][break]

The tip of her tongue perked out from her lips. "Grumpy old man."[break][break]

With quick reaction, she steadied the bag in both of her arms. It was hefty and had caused her to shift her weight when she caught it. "You and your gorilla arms," she commented. "You know, I was kind of just offering to help to be nice..." She sighed. It was too late to take it back now.[break][break]

"How about you treat me to something nice after?" she then suggested. "So, what do you want me to do with this?" She weighs the bag in her hands.

With a quiet grunt, Nabi lugged the bag to the corner as directed. A small whiff of dust lifted from underneath the bag. As Nabi wiped her hands, she said back, "Oh, you know, a nice big, juicy steak with a side of buttery mashed potatoes and fresh, vibrant vegetables."[break][break]

She looked back to Elijah and then around the stall with its assortment of plants, herbs, pots, soils and the sorts. Elijah's business screamed "I have no money."[break][break]

"Ice cream is also good," she said with an affirmative nod. "Do old men eat ice cream? Actually, how old are you anyways? You're like, kind of in this weird state where you could be in your thirties or forties, but you could be younger if you smiled more."

She had never groaned as fast as she did just then. "I get it, I get it," she said, searching for somewhere to sit in his workspace. She settled on a pile of soil, or dirt, or beans or whatever it was. "You have no friends. You're single. Very alone." She nodded as she spoke, as if in deep contemplation. "You're unfamiliar with socialization. That's ok."[break][break]

The sneasel returned to his perch on his trainer's shoulders. At some point, he had managed to swipe a berry and was now taking small bites of it from his claw.[break][break]

"I think it's time for you to take a break. Get out of this stall. You're inhaling too much dirt. We're right by the ocean—how about it?" She clapped her hands together and put on an abnormally huge smile for him. "I bet your pokemon could use a break. And screw you, I'm gonna look this cute even when they're puttin' me in my grave."

elijah stills. his face is akin to that of a popped balloon, eyes wide, lips stretched wide by impidimps of indignation and shock. the audacity of nabi—and of her sneasel having swiped one of his hard-grown berries.[break][break]

"fine! out we get before i blow my fucking lid." elijah snarls in sarcasm. "after you!"[break][break]

he gestures to the outside with a stiff hand, and his gogoat bleats, brushing by nabi's side as it is already happy to pursue the pink-promised beach.

Beaming, Nabi hopped right off the stack of bags and ushered for Elijah to follow her. "Great! Beach time!" She was a tad too excited to get more than a monotone scowl from him.[break][break]

She stepped into the open road where lines of other stalls stood with their wares on display. She hadn't bothered to explore the area, knowing only Elijah's small and comfy shop.[break][break]

Nabi glanced back at him, slightly suspecting he would hide or dip away. "My eyes are on you," she said, gesturing between him and her vision with a pair of fingers. Thankfully, his gogoat seemed eager to get out, and so she let the grass pokemon lead the way to the sands.[break][break]

"I can't imagine you're wearing swim trunks underneath that," she then said, eyeing his attire. With a shrug, she added, "No biggie. Just take your shirt off, and you'll be ok."
