an assortment of noises and colors filled her senses, and all around were a variety of arcade-style games. it appeared to her the kind of place that the locals flocked to. she hummed while her eyes scanned the room.[break][break]

"are you going to win me a stuffed doll, too?" she probed when she saw a crane machine. her eyes migrated towards the counter where one would order drinks. what was she in the mood for?

nabi made a mental note about the doll. she wasn't so much interested in actually taking a doll home with her today as she was in seeing cian fail at a crane machine. there was one that had caught her eye.[break][break]

"shots?" nabi made a small gulp. she should have known 'drinks' meant alcoholic beverages. "of course! shots are the way to go, right?" she quickly followed with, letting him take the lead to order the drinks.[break][break]

the truth was that alcohol was a fast-acting poison for nabi. her experiences with it always led to her making a fool out of herself and forgetting events. her grandparents quickly learned she would be a failure of a ninja if alcohol was involved in the mission.[break][break]

but nabi didn't want cian to know that she was some sort of wimp.

nabi accepted the shot glass with a flicker of hesitation. her brain tried to reason with her, tell her that this was a mistake. she would only make a fool of herself if she consumed the liquid in the glass. but when she looked at cian just across from her with his semi-goofy smile and uplifting attitude, she found herself listening more to her heart. her brain could take a back seat for now.[break][break]

"to us?" she repeated, uncertain.[break][break]

she stared down at the shot glass, thinking once, twice—and then it was at her lips, sliding past her throat and into the chambers. this was quickly followed by the jaeger bomb.[break][break]

her face soured, and she hummed a soft sort of moan in reaction to the alcohol. it was her first time trying tequila.[break][break]

"um, what exactly does to us mean?" she asked for clarification and set the glass down on the counter.

the toast had been made almost passingly without much of a thought, the 'to us' casual to him but perhaps not to her; a realization he comes to only after.[break][break]

he swallows as though it'd help ease the sting in his throat. without lingering on the thought, he tugs on her arm and leads them away.[break][break]

"now that we're all warmed up, let's go win something," competitive flames ignite in him as he scans the area before landing on a row of claw machines.[break][break]

nabi still didn't understand, but at cian's tug, she followed without anymore inquiries. her eyes scanned the machine and its plushies. this was not a hard choice for her to make.[break][break]

"treecko," she said simply, eyes falling on one of the plushies in an upright position. it was perfect for grabbing. she flashed cian a small smile then and elbowed him gently. "i probably don't look like a treecko kind of girl," said the pinkette.[break][break]

her jade eyes turned back to the crane machine with its goodies. "are you good at these?" she had a feeling he would lie about his skills. wasn't it all luck?

"nope. would've guessed torchic," he chuckles in response, calling back to how they met an hour ago, backdropped by a burning tree. but that's not why she reminds him of a torchic. "you look like you could burn me."[break][break]

tapping a card against the machine, the claw activates. he moves it with precision, tapping once, twice, before nodding.[break][break]

"of course. watch."[break][break]

he pushes the button and watches the claw fall around the treecko that had been clearly set up to be grabbed. the claw comes back up before moving to safely deposit treecko.[break][break]

"heh, told you."

nabi watched with her nose gently pressed agains the glass of the crane machine, her eyes wide and unblinking like a hoothoot. her expectations were low, but the child in her was excited nonetheless. she held her breath when the claw latched onto the lifeless treecko.[break][break]

it teetered. the seconds carried with anticipation.[break][break]

oh-so-cool cian was practically unnerved by his win. nabi could not contain herself. her immediate reaction was to punch him in his arm. "no way, twinkle hands!" she exclaimed, faced littered with blushing joy. at her feet, her cyndaquil sang in praise.[break][break]

nabi reached into the machine for her new toy. she would have liked for the real thing, but a plush toy was acceptable for now. "that was luck," she insisted. "take another shot. do it again."

nabi's nose wrinkled in response to cian's touch. "i'm waaatching," she said in a lengthy drawl, eyes back on the machine. "gimmie the torchic this time."[break][break]

the claw's jankey movements returned to life. it was lined up perfectly, seemingly about to lift one of the torchic plushies up. and it did, until it was fully reclined, and then the doll bounced back into place.[break][break]

"see!" nabi's voice projected. without even realizing it, her foot kicked the crane machine. "it's not good to get hopes up, ki-ki." she wagged her finger at him like he had done a bad thing.[break][break]

her body slumped, a little, wobbly, but she could still find her balance. her arm reached into the prize door, attempting (and utterly failing) at digging for one of the dolls. "this is how i used to win them aaalll the time."

that's just how it goes with these machines. they're a scam, set up to steal money from unsuspecting buffoons like him trying to impress cute girls. his eyes can't help but flutter shut in disappointment the moment the torchic falls out of the claws.[break][break]

"haven't you heard? every story needs a good underdog to root for. that's me."[break][break]

ignoring her brazen attempt at theft — add it to the list of crimes she's done in his presence — he taps his card and continues playing. he goes for the same torchic.[break][break]

"i'm not going to help you if you get kicked out."[break][break]

he mutters as he focuses.[break][break]

"just kidding. i would, but i wouldn't be happy about it."[break][break]

tap! the claw drops, picking up the torchic and carrying it over to the zone. it bounces off the side, but perhaps close enough for her to grab it.

"underdog?" nabi snorted. "naaah, you're more like a... like a..." she drifted off as the crane kicks back to life. while cian attemps to win the plush legitamately, nabi's hand continues to swipe at the walls of the machine. she could feel the tips of her finger at the edge, just milimeters away from fabric.[break][break]

something soft grazed her index finger. following the momentum, nabi shoves her shoulder into the machine to reach and grab the little tuft at the top of the torchic's head. in one swift, yet unsmooth motion, she pulled the torchic from the machine's depths and displayed it for cian to see.[break][break]

"you're my heeerrroo," she finally said with a grin too goofy for her face splattered across red cheek to red cheek. all senses were completely relaxed now.[break][break]

the treecko and torchic plushies cuddled against her chest in one arm. with the other, she hooked herself with cian and slumped against his body, head messily on his shoulder. "you have to get me mudkipz now! otherwise, these guys will be so looonley," she slurred.
