Man, she was out of touch. All those years spent training to be an elite ninja for Team Rocket, and for what? Nabi mentally made a note to get herself back on some sort of training regime and perhaps less junk food.[break][break]

After a series of explosions (one dangerously close to Nabi's money maker), the pinkette found herself heaving on the ground, arms and legs outstretched like a lifeless doll. "I'm... not... done..." she said out loud to no one.[break][break]

A squeak to her right forced her to turn and look at Poppy who was, thankfully, managing. The flames on her back were erupt with life. "You're right, Poppy. We can't give up now," Nabi said with newfound determination.[break][break]

She rose to her feet, body and bones and will aching, just in time to see a faint shine cover the obstacle course. The hairs on her skin stood in response. At this rate...[break][break]

"We're both going to QUICK ATTACK the rest of the way," she said to Poppy, giving the cyndaquil an affirmative nod before breaking into a dash. She could watch for the voltorb clearly now and had full intentions of bounding around them until several pointed-like objects came flying through the air, causing the voltorb to flee and retreat.[break][break]

On one hand, it helped to create a path for Nabi. On the other, she felt several needles scrape against her skin and rip her clothes. Nabi yelped but ignored the dissheveled clothes. She could feel his presence right behind her, closing in![break][break]

Almost there, almost there...!

"It's called gratitude," Nabi said slowly for him. She'd spell the word out for him, too, if he asked. She allowed herself in and set the basket on the first open counter space she saw. "As in, you have my gratitude for, uh, being a really swell guy to me." She eyed the bags on the ground. She had already assumed Elijah would be in the middle of work.[break][break]

Oh well. She liked being a distraction.[break][break]

"If you still have them, I can put them make on, nya," the pinkette joked in regards to the ears, remembering she had left them with him in case he ever wanted to use them again. She really, really tried to persuade him in wearing them. Unsuccessfully.[break][break]

Jiji jumped from Nabi's shoulders and began to explore and sniff at his own pleasure, always the curious one. Nabi came over to Elijah's side and pointed to the bags. "Should I show more of my gratitude by helping you out here?"

Frankly, Nabi didn't belond here. Her unworthy status aside, she did not consider herself a food critique and was unsure how helpful she would actually be to Yumi. She would continue to act the part though. "Exactly, and the taste of the water can say a lot about a place," Nabi added on with a confident nod. "Do they add fruit for flavor, do they have dirty ice cubes, is it room temp or cold?" She had no idea what she was talking about.[break][break]

When the chef offered his hand, Nabi held it perhaps a little too firmly out of habit. His hand was strangely soft for a chef, in her opinion.[break][break]

The menus were small in size, unlike a larger chain that appeal to families with rowdy children and picky tastes. It made it easy for Nabi to peruse the selection. But yet again, she found herself in unfamiliar territory without the faintest idea of what a "confit" or "omlette du fromage" was.[break][break]

She held the menu closer and squinted her eyes, as if that would suddenly help her understand the complexities of gourmet food language. Suddenly, it was her turn to order. The unprepared Nabi cleared her throat. Ordering the same thing as Yumi would be lame and show her inexperience.[break][break]

"I think I'll try this," she said, pointing to the item. The chef gave a nod that Nabi assumed meant she had picked something delicious. She would soon find out it was a boiled and stuffed corphish.[break][break]

The chef gave a small bow before disappearing into the depths of his kitchen. Just Yumi and Nabi again.[break][break]

"I'm a little surprised you asked me to come," she finally admitted, fingers finding their way around the base of her glass for a distraction. "You don't have other friends to take out for dinner?"

Nabi found herself groaning when she heard Josh's reply. How hard could it be to find a sea beheamoth? Even wearing her water-repellent suit, her skin was prickly from the cold wetness, and her hair kept sticking to her face. What a pain.[break][break]

Water billowed out from the surface in a beautiful display of power. Nabi's eyes shined. "Dive for a moment, Bruno," she whispered to her swampert and adjusted the goggles on her nose. She sucked in her breath and disappeared beneath the dark waters.[break][break]

The creature known as Kyogre was truly a sight with its mighty tail slapping currents into existence and its defined, sharp teeth threatening to crush anything in an instant. The yellow of its eyes glowed brightly, serene and frightening all at the same time.[break][break]

Bruno pulled them back up to the surface for air. "It's there!" she shouted to Josh. So, now what?[break][break]

She felt herself tense. Seriously, what was she going to do against Kyogre? She reached for a pokeball on the belt secured around her waist to call forth her next pokemon.[break][break]

The altaria let out a melodic chirp upon her release, immediately followed by a worrisome squawk when she realized the immense weight of rain on her wings. Nabi seemed to wait for something to happen.[break][break]

"I was hoping Nico's CLOUD NINE would dispel the rain... guess Kyogre is just too strong," she sighed.

the idea of frying the guard to a crisp appealed to nabi more than cian would know, but she shook her head aggressively. "i don't wanna go to jaaail," she whined to him. then again, it wouldn't be her fault if the guard were electrified on the spot... it'd be his! hm, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea.[break][break]

nabi could feel the space in between her arm and her assortment of baggage loosen. she was losing her grip on something. "wait!" she shouted when the treecko plush dropped to the ground. she tugged cian back and unlocked herself from him.[break][break]

as her hand reached toward the treecko, the guard made his approach, now with a growlithe by his side. he said an order of sorts—nabi didn't quite catch it—but the growlithe was now on them with bared teeth.[break][break]

the little cyndaquil in her grip squirmed out and jumped forward, tiny hands held out defensively to protect her trainer. "that's it!" nabi swiped her treecko plushie and said, "SMOKESCREEN, poppy!"[break][break]

the black fume spilled into the arcade, causing others nearby to cough and complain. "let's go!" she whispered to cian, her hand somehow finding his in the darkness.

"Careful, now, Mango," Nabi speaks to the eager pichu in the middle of absorbing the electrical currents all around them. There's only so much a baby pichu can take in before it's too much, so when she starts to see Mango's cheeks fluff up, she tells him to use NUZZLE on the nearest electrike. It's not particularly effective, given the newborn's strength, even with the boosted electricity. In any case, Nabi's more interested in testing the pichu's capabilities.[break][break]

To her right is Taiga, claws flicking for a taste of battle himself. He growls lowly when a manectric steps up to the scene to assist the electrike Mango has just attacked.[break][break]

Nabi pounds a fist into her hand. "Alright then, a double-battle, eh?" She flashes a grin to Taiga.[break][break]

The zeraroa dives into action with a POWER-UP PUNCH while Mango unleahes a THUNDERSHOCK this time. Snap, crackle, and pop![break][break]

A pokeball flies out from Nabi's hand, swift as lightning.[break][break]

nabi couldn't help but snicker to herself with biscotti's awkward slip ups. not in a haha-you're-a-dork kind of way (although she had already decided that he definitely was, without a doubt, a dork), but as a term of endearment. she was particularly drawn by his relationship with jangle. "you act more like siblings than trainer and pokemon," she commented absentmindedly. if he had looked, he would have been able to make out the faint marks of a smile.[break][break]

there was a sudden change in the air. a quiet eeriness filled the space of the cave. it was clear that, at one point, humans had been here. "so, relatives?" nabi said then, wondering if the missing persons at least felt comforted by the fact that they were all missing together.[break][break]

"you know," nabi began to think out loud, "there's only so many places they could actually be, right? are they really in this cave?" something just felt... off about it all. she took a step forward.[break][break]

instincts kicked in then when something from above creaked and shifted. before even warning him, nabi had already reached out to tug biscotti by his wrist as pieces of rocks and dirt dropped. "look out!"

"Relax," Nabi kept repeating in her head. "Yeah, right! How can I relax in this situation?" she would then reply back to her inner thoughts.[break][break]

The taxi ride itself was nerve-wrecking with Nabi attempting to seem distracted by looking out the window. Yumi simply made her feel that way, and she did it so effortlessly.[break][break]

However, Nabi refused to be the reason for sullying Yumi's image. She swallowed her girlish anxiety deep, deep down as they exited the cab. She appeared more calm, poised, though perhaps a bit too serious for a meal outing. She hung her arm carefully against Yumi's. "I won't hold back," she replied smoothly, mostly joking. Inside, she couldn't deny that she was more than curious to have her tastes refined and replenished. Hopefully the chef delivered on their reputation.[break][break]

She first waited for Yumi to seat herself before taking the chair from across. Even the table itself was elegantly dressed with tablecloth fancier than some of her own clothes.[break][break]

The wait was short before a server was standing by their table to greet them and immediately asking for their choice of beverages. Nabi suddenly felt her stomach tighten a bit thinking about alcohol. She was not going to let herself dance naked on a table in front of Yumi.[break][break]

"Just water for me," she said with a small squeak.

Nabi nodded back to Josh, trying not to stare at the obvious injury holding him back. Injured or not, she had a feeling he could still carry himself in battle.[break][break]

And her intuition was correct. Without further ado, the very image of lightning itself appeared before them. Nabi had already thought herself lucky to be encountering Kyogre today, but with a raikou being her second legendary encounter, well... now she was starting to think this was some sort of bad omen.[break][break]

Nevertheless, with a raikou on their side, surely, that would mean they had the advantage?[break][break]

Nabi slapped herself to rid of the gawk on her face. "You look like a fool," she told herself. "Ok, let's go, Bruno!"[break][break]

While Josh flew from above, Nabi claimed the water route. Hurdles of waves tossed them around, but her swampert charged forward with determination. Occassionally, when a bigger wave approached, Nabi held her breath, and Bruno ducked into the water itself, kicking against the pull of the tidal.[break][break]

"We can't be too far!" she yelled to Josh above. How did she know? Because rain began to hit them—hard—and the waters only continued to churn with relentless, unforgiving aggression. "Josh! Can you see Kyogre?" she asked, hoping he could hear her over the rising storm.

"i have forever and ever," nabi claimed, not really understanding herself. she focused her attention back on the crane machine, eager and strung on liquid courage.[break][break]

she was not, however, expecting the heroic gym leader himself to turn to less noble methods. her eyes widened slightly at the sight of the pincurchin, its needles just asking to be poked by a curiously drunken girl, but she witheld. with a little bit of zappy-zap energy, the crane is in their favor, and the final mudkip joins her rank of hoenn starters.[break][break]

"ahahaha!" nabi blurts as she hugged all three plus her cyndaquil in her arms. "feels gooood to break the law, huh, cici?" she chimed.[break][break]

she wasn't sure if it was her announcement that drew attention or the pincurchin's suspicious activity, but regardless, sights were on the pair now.[break][break]

"you two!" a security guard yelled out, baton pointed at them.[break][break]

"shiiiiiit, we gotta ruuun!" nabi then exclaimed, hooking an arm around cian an dragging him to literally anywhere but the entrance of the arcade, which would have made much more sense for a getaway.

When Nabi first came to Hoenn, she had disembarked right here in Slateport. She remembered feeling helpless, lost, alone. When her cyndaquil was suddenly poisoned by a wild pokemon, she even considered that running away from her family had been the wrong option.[break][break]

But she had learned and grown a lot in the short amount of time since then. Now, back in Slateport, Nabi began to feel a little nostalgic. She recalled a particular green-haired man and his tangrowth. Images of herself dressed in skitty-like ears—against his wishes—returned to her mind, when she helped him at his stall. She had thought a cute girl wearing cute pokemon ears would attract more attention. She was certain she was right.[break][break]

She came in regular attire this time. No skitty ears or tail to draw in hungry men. Instead, a sneasel sat at her shoulder, curiously people-watching as they walked through the Night Market stalls, and a gift in hand.[break][break]

"There it is," she whispered to herself when she saw the apothecary's stall up ahead. She skipped the rest of the way.[break][break]

"Yoo hoo!" she announced, head popping inside to find the owner. "Remember me?" She offered a basket of goodies with an assortment of berries and plants. She couldn't forget Elijah's kindness when she felt most useless.

"Chance!" Nabi said under her breath. The smoke lifted, and there huddled on the ground, she saw her cyndaquil rolled into a ball. "Gotcha!" She swiped Poppy into her hand and held her against her chest.[break][break]

From above, not one, not two, not even three—but many voltorb began to rain from the cieling. These guys weren't holding anything back in this test, were they?[break][break]

Nabi looked up in terror, just in time for one of the voltorb to hit her plank in the face and cause her to lose her balance. One leg whipped up in the air as her body fell onto her back.[break][break]

It was her turn to scream.

nabi suddenly drops both her treecko and torchic plushie. her cyndaquil grabs them and shuffles them to the side, away from her wobbly feet. "you know what we need? more shots!" she decided and dashed back to the bar while cian tried his luck for the final plush. before returning, she had already downed her glass.[break][break]

"for my hero," she offered him the shot glass. "now, win me that mudkip, and i'll do something good for you, too!"[break][break]

and what would that be exactly? well, cian would just have to find out, wouldn't he?

The idea of fighting a kyogre was, well, frightening. What had Nabi gotten herself into?[break][break]

Supposedly, the creature had been loose in the oceans for awhile now, with both factions testing their luck at claiming its power. One would think that after all the failed attempts, catching Kyogre was impossible. And yet, here she was, partnered with Josh Devlin, a mighty name she felt lucky to be paired with. Perhaps there was some hope in their quest to tame the sea beast?[break][break]

Nabi shifted her weight on Bruno for better seating. Her lower half was nearly submerged in the water, but thankfully, she had not come unprepared for the occassion. She wore a one-piece wetsuit, knowing full well this mission would leave her drenched from head to toe.[break][break]

"I guess we're ready?" she spoke out, eyes now on Josh Devlin and his pokemon. She remembered him from the VCT, and she recalled he was a talented gym leader.[break][break]

The ocean's waves were calm, for now, but she knew that would not last for long. They had received word Kyogre was further out on Route 124, causing a torrential downpour.
