one ball remained, and the time ticked away. "let's move quickly," nabi said to her cyndaquil as she picked up the lileep's ball.[break][break]

their search took them to a new area now, away from the rocky crags and towards more greenery. however, there seemed to be no pokemon in the vicinity. nabi bit her lip in anticipation, not wanting the last ball to go to waste.[break][break]

at the first sight of yellow, nabi locked on. "i choose you!" she announced, tossing the ball at the surprise pichu.[break][break]

now that re-introductions were out of the way, nabi followed beside biscotti and his incineroar. "i do have a preference for beautiful and cute pokemon," she casually added, realizing full well bruno did not fit in either of those categories. there were some special exceptions, such as him. "a beautiful girl should be surrounded by beautiful pokemon," she then said with a small smirk, and--did she just flick her hair?[break][break]

silently, she observed biscotti interact with his incineroar. like his name implied, if there was a taste to describe him, it would be sweet. it seemed an unlikely match with the punchy wrestling cat beside him, but she already knew they were well-paired. she had seen it on the battlefield.[break][break]

"pitchforks?" she repeated, confused. that didn't sound right. "uh, ok. so we're looking for... pitchforks..." nabi looked ahead into the cave. she wondered if they would have to prepare for any wild pokemon attacks.[break][break]

as if on cue, a low grumble sounded throughout the cave. nabi flinched in her steps before quickly shrugging it off and continuing onward. "how many of them are there?" she decided to ask to break any awkward silence. she spied the list but hadn't seen the names of those they were looking for.

if it weren't for her ninja training, nabi was certain she would have already toppled over from the effects of the gravity. perhaps those days of meditating under a waterfall counted for something![break][break]

her body pushed through, and as the seconds passed, so did the heavy pressure surrounding her. she looked up ahead to watch the results of her and poppy's combined power. little did she suspect that her opponent would have the same thought.[break][break]

"poppy, look out!" she tried to warn the cyndaquil, but there was no stopping the collision of the two rodents. and with the smokescreen up, nabi could not see the end result.[break][break]

meanwhile, poppy's body hit against the protective spikes of the togedemaru, eliciting a yelp from her. she fell to the ground, jumping around as if she had just stepped on a nail.[break][break]

now making her way through the smoke, a certain pink-haired individual raced to catch up to greyson, both arms locked at 90-degree angles and eyes shining on the target she could not yet see.[break][break]

she had somehow forgotten the main goal: avoid the voltorbs.[break][break]

somewhere in the smoke, a pair of voltorb bided their time.

"underdog?" nabi snorted. "naaah, you're more like a... like a..." she drifted off as the crane kicks back to life. while cian attemps to win the plush legitamately, nabi's hand continues to swipe at the walls of the machine. she could feel the tips of her finger at the edge, just milimeters away from fabric.[break][break]

something soft grazed her index finger. following the momentum, nabi shoves her shoulder into the machine to reach and grab the little tuft at the top of the torchic's head. in one swift, yet unsmooth motion, she pulled the torchic from the machine's depths and displayed it for cian to see.[break][break]

"you're my heeerrroo," she finally said with a grin too goofy for her face splattered across red cheek to red cheek. all senses were completely relaxed now.[break][break]

the treecko and torchic plushies cuddled against her chest in one arm. with the other, she hooked herself with cian and slumped against his body, head messily on his shoulder. "you have to get me mudkipz now! otherwise, these guys will be so looonley," she slurred.

their next encounter would be a lonely lileep perched at the bottom of a cavern. its head hung low. perhaps it was sleeping?[break][break]

the plant-like pokemon caught nabi's interest. the colors, its unique shape and biology-- in a way, she did find it cute. she particularly enjoyed the little pink tendrils coming out of its face as if it were hair. in which case, they were matching![break][break]

nabi instructed for poppy to wait and readied a safari ball. there were few left remaining, so she had to make these last ones count! not wanting to startle it, she quietly tossed the ball.[break][break]

Nabi felt a twinge in her little heart. Could she really do that, too? Save pokemon, protect the world. Would it be okay for someone like her to do that?[break][break]

She tried not to react to Yuina's invintation, but the corners of her mouth couldn't help but jerk up a little. "Well, maybe I'll think on it," the girl said, knowing full well herself that she would find the time to look into the Rangers more later.[break][break]

"Statements. Right, can do," she then said with a short nod. "And... it was my pleasure." She allowed herself to smile without restraint this time. Even though she had mainly interfered for personal reasons, she did feel a sense of fulfillment having helped fight the bad guys. It was certainly a more rewarding feeling than when she stole from others... would the rangers know about that? The thought was fleeting and to be saved for another day.[break][break]

For now, she would give her statement, bid the ranger goodbye, and then try and see what she could do about the money she just lost.

"another addition to the team," nabi thought to herself as she picked up her newly caught meinfoo's ball.[break][break]

something caught poppy's attention then. a noise, and fumes. with piqued interest, the cyndaquil and her newfound bravery trotted towards the source. nabi followed after with matching speed.[break][break]

behind a series of others boulders, a varoom revved its engine and raced circles over and over again. puffs of black occassionaly rose from its exhaust. or was that its mouth? nose?[break][break]

poppy watched quietly and in awe.[break][break]

"we should move on," nabi whispered to the cyndaquil. "it doesn't look like it wants to be bothered."[break][break]

poppy nodded, and the pair left the varoom in its solo race.[break][break]

nabi nodded in understanding. she had never faced danger headfront like many others had. in a way, her grandparents coddled her. she underwent strict training, but never was she in any real danger. fear, nabi began to realize, was something she had yet to experience. it was partly what made her come off as so naive to the world, and careless.[break][break]

"ooh, yeah, rangers, i've heard about you guys," nabi said, thinking hand held to her chin. enemies of team rocket. if only her grandparents could see her now, working alongside the enemy.[break][break]

her eyes were drawn to the armband's sleek design and colors. ironically, similar to the police force. but ranger had a much cooler vibe to it.[break][break]

"maybe i should get one of those things for myself?" the pink-haired woman then laughed. "if i had your armband, i could go around kicking butt and serving justice." she did like the idea of kicking butts without suffering the legal repercussions.

lately, nabi thought to herself, something didn't feel right. it was simple intuition, but the number of missing persons was concerning. she didn't know what to expect, but at her core, she could tell danger was inevitable. how was she to best avoid it? or prepare for it?[break][break]

she supposed helping was one way. money wasn't a matter of interest to her in this case. nabi valued experience more than anything, and perhaps information. maybe one of these missing cases knew what was going on? in any case, after a night of thinking, nabi decided to volunteer herself in a search party.[break][break]

and thankfully, she wasn't alone. her partner was a familiar face, though it took her a moment and a sense of deja vu to recall his name.[break][break]

"oh! we met before," she replied, finger pointed at him. it was his incineroar that sparked her memories. just like last time, he was a flustering mess then, too. "at the vct? we battled each other." she offered a smile in turn to his awkwardness.[break][break]

unlike their last encounter, her swampert did not accompany her. instead, it was her beautifly, prince, settled atop her head like a crown.[break][break]

"yeah, i remember you had a weird name," she spoke bluntly. "cookie or whatever. anyways, i'm nabi, again. this is prince." she gestured to her beautifly with her eyes. "i'm not looking for anyone myself. just thought i'd help out. be a good samaritan and all."[break][break]

it would have been natural for her to ask him the same question, but instead, she asked, "so, any clues to go off of?" they were in rusturf tunnel, and although relatively simple to navigate, that didn't mean one couldn't go missing or get lost in here.

"sorry?" there was little time for her to process what had just happened. without warning, the weight of her body was pulled low to the ground. she fell to her knees and struggled to keep the upper half of her body up. meanwhile for poppy, she laid flat with all fours spread out.[break][break]

"that cheat!" nabi spoke through grit teeth. she urged herself to get up. behind her, she could hear a few of the others laughing at her failure to even leave the starting line.[break][break]

"you're going to have to go ahead of me, poppy," nabi said to her companion, lifting the small mouse in her hands. "i'll catch up. don't let them get too ahead, hear me?"[break][break]

poppy made a mewl, uncertain what the heck her trainer was insinuating.[break][break]

nabi took two steps forward, pushing herself into the next room, and looked straight ahead. she could still see greyson's figure. "on three," she warned poppy.[break][break]

poppy suddenly had a terrible feeling.[break][break]

on the number three, her body was sent flying through the air like a baseball. she had even curled herself into a ball, truly making her seem like an oncoming object. simply out of fear, poppy released a smokescreen, covering the area and the nearby voltorb in total blackness.

nabi's nose wrinkled in response to cian's touch. "i'm waaatching," she said in a lengthy drawl, eyes back on the machine. "gimmie the torchic this time."[break][break]

the claw's jankey movements returned to life. it was lined up perfectly, seemingly about to lift one of the torchic plushies up. and it did, until it was fully reclined, and then the doll bounced back into place.[break][break]

"see!" nabi's voice projected. without even realizing it, her foot kicked the crane machine. "it's not good to get hopes up, ki-ki." she wagged her finger at him like he had done a bad thing.[break][break]

her body slumped, a little, wobbly, but she could still find her balance. her arm reached into the prize door, attempting (and utterly failing) at digging for one of the dolls. "this is how i used to win them aaalll the time."

the safari ball titled back and forth in the grass with vigorous shaking, keeping both nabi and poppy on edge. she gulped, almost reaching to her waist to prepare another ball. and then--ding![break][break]

grinning big, nabi skipped to where the ball sat. "success!" she chimed to her cyndaquil. "not a bad start, huh?" she pocketed the ball. naming her newly caught fletchling would come later. what pokemon would she find next?[break][break]

she and poppy delved deeper into the safari zone, leaving behind the open grass plains for a more rugged, barren area. it was the perfect place for rock types, or even a lone fighting type.[break][break]

her eyes fixed on the mienfoo in the middle of a training session. with each invigorated yell, it pounded its palms against a large boulder. nabi liked that kind of energy.[break][break]

her second safari ball was sent flying and hit against the mienfoo's back.[break][break]
