Something had snapped in Nabi since that day. And ever since, she felt herself drifting back into old habits, searching for conflict, hearing voices.[break][break]

The heat seemed to drive her mad.[break][break]

Her own pokemon could not understand what had become of their trainer. They followed, listened, did as told. She did most of the handywork, anyways.[break][break]

And today, with the unbearable sun and electrifying air surrounding them, Nabi had found herself another victim.[break][break]

The young man laid unconscious on the ground, face covered in blood. Fresh paints of red colored Nabi's right fist.[break][break]

While he laid there, unmoving, she began to dig through his pockets, his bag—for anything she could claim as her own.

the unfortunate victim of his beration is an acro bike, freshly bought and out of the box; bits of the plastic wrapping still cling to its steel frame; it suffers a disgruntled kick which almost topples them to the ground. thankfully, he rights the bike in time to save himself from the humiliation.[break][break]

he'd gotten the acro bike to learn how to do cool tricks and instead he's been failing over and over again, unable to do even a simple wheelie. he blames the make of the bike, of course, or the handle or the wheel, but never himself.[break][break]

his frustrations take a backseat as something strange comes into sight. he can count on one hand the number of people he knows who has stark, pink hair like her, so he jumps to the assumption that—[break][break]

She froze at the call of her own name. The voice felt inherently familiar, but she didn't recognize them until she turned her head and saw the face of Rustboro's gym leader.[break][break]

She sucked in her breath.[break][break]

Several options came to Nabi's mind in that moment. She could attack Cian. It was better he didn't know anymore. She could also run away, but what would stop him from chasing? She could lie, make up an excuse for the unconscious man beneath her. Cian wouldn't be that dumb, though.[break][break]

Her grandfather's voice echoed inside her head, urging her to kill the witnesses.[break][break]

She considered him a friend, or something. Nabi knew she didn't want to hurt him, but the memories of her grandparents pushing her to finish the job made her fingers twitch to take action.[break][break]

Running at least would keep her from hurting him.[break][break]

Nabi finally exhaled and turned to the opposite direction, leaving behind the beaten man with his belongings still intact. Her feet shuffled across the ground's natural terrain, dodging anything that would cause her to slip. But with water surrounding the man-made path and the cycling road hovering above, there was little room for her to make a proper escape.[break][break]

She raced on, forcing herself to keep looking ahead, but when she thought she heard Cian call out to her again, Nabi made the mistake of looking back.[break][break]

And running off the path into cold ocean water.

the cogs in his head churn slowly; painfully slow for someone of his stature; by the time he realizes what's happening, he's left scrambling to catch up.[break][break]

"wait, nabi!"[break][break]

naturally, he defers to what he knows best, so he takes off running after her. the acro bike falls to the ground, clattering right as he reaches the unconscious man only to end up ignoring them in favor of pursuing his friend(?).[break][break]

"big mouth, stay with him and make sure he's okay!"[break][break]

the weepinbell plops off cian's back and lands right by the man. cian may be silly but he's not negligent. his gaze remains ahead, fixed on the path as he tries his best to reach her.[break][break]

"nabi!"[break][break]

except he doesn't. she falls right off the path and into cold ocean water. thankfully, he's also a swimmer, so he doesn't hesitate to plunge right in with her.[break][break]

a pokeball flashes open. together with his froakie, they search for her.

The unexpected crash of water against her skin sent Nabi into shock. When she opened her eyes, all she could make out was a blue-tinted blur. Disoriented, she paddled through the water, straight toward an unassuming lanturn.[break][break]

The moment her hand accidentally clutched the lanturn's bulb, electricity consumed her and the surrounding water. A gurgle of bubbles escaped her mouth, along with the last of her oxygen reserves. And just like that, she lost conscious, and her body floated still in the water while the lanturn furiously swam off.

all he sees is a burst of yellow muted by murky blue before he plunges into the water after her. a chill sweeps over him but he feels little of it; adrenaline warms him; fires him.[break][break]

with blurred vision, he trusts his froakie to guide them. his sygna suit activates, keeping them safe against the push and pull of the waters.[break][break]

"...!"[break][break]

he sees her. froakie sees her. together, they swim to her, hoping that her lifelessness is merely temporary. froakie's tongue extends out to wrap around her before they ascend to break through the surface.[break][break]

he gasps for air.[break][break]

"nabi!"
