Dressed in casual clothing, Julien sat at a table in the window of a highly-rated seafood restaurant in Lilycove. While it was not as grandiose or luxurious as he usually preferred, its food had earned it one of the highest marks a restaurant could attain. Therefore, he had no reason not to try its menu. [break][break]

But he was not there to dine alone. Recent news of Duncan Calcifet's arrival in Hoenn had piqued Julien's interest; the men were acquaintances, having met during the latter's tenure as Kalosian ambassador in Galar. [break][break]

Though Julien has his misgivings about members of the Calcifet family, it would have been remiss of him not to extend a welcome to the Duke of Hammerlocke. [break][break]

The conversation led from one topic to another, until Duncan suggested they try some local cuisine during the upcoming Vital City Tournament. Naturally, Julien agreed. He selected this restaurant overlooking the sea and set a time and date for them to meet. [break][break]

Julien was reading the VCT rankings on his phone when movement in the corner of his eye drew his attention. Looking up, he found himself face-to-face with Duncan as he approached their table. Julien immediately stowed away his phone and stood to shake the other man's hand. [break][break]

"Your Grace," he said smoothly. "It's a pleasure to see you again."

"Few years too young to be considered a Grace, isn't it friend?" the entering silver-haired fox of a man speaks in a deep Northern Galarian accent. When his hand moves to clasp around Julien's, he gives a firm, strong handshake to the oh-so-slightly taller gentleman, before pulling the chair out to sit down. He's in his black leather jacket, hair done up in the long ponytail. Some might consider it unkempt, but he preferred it. Keeping it fluffy like this and all.[break][break]

"You're looking well, Julien! Or should I say monsieur?" The way he chuckles is friendly, light, airy.[break][break]

Business and pleasure, regardless of which, Duncan always has a smile on his face. What sits behind those golden eyes is anyone's guess.[break][break]

Moment he does take pause, his eyes immediately gaze at all the seafood options, and he's quick to pick it up, trailing a finger down the menu. "Ooooh, isn't that fitting, a king crab for scran." He knows it's a matter of time before they talk business. It's not stalling for time, just small talk. Duncan knows that soon he'll have to take the role of Duke, and Julien his own role as Kalosian Ambassador. This would inevitably turn to business, but for now, a little small talk.[break][break]

He'll let Julien set the pace for now.

Julien blinked at Duncan's blithe comment. "Your Grace" was the proper way for someone of lesser status to address a Duke, especially since the men were not close. Julien considered Duncan an acquaintance at best. [break][break]

Still, it was even more improper to correct the Duke, so Julien simply offered a polite smile as the men shook hands. "I am, thank you. You look to be in good health as well." [break][break]

They took their seats, picking up the menu to peruse it. Julien's pale eyes fell upon the king crab when Duncan mentioned it. As he grew up in a city ringed by mountains, Julien was not as accustomed to seafood, but he was willing to try anything. [break][break]

"The king crab does look good," he agreed. "Are you in the mood for an appetizer? I might get a lobster bisque. This cold weather is perfect for soup." [break][break]

At that moment, a waitress appeared to take their drink orders. [break][break]

"Water with lemon, please."

Good health is certainly a word! Even if it seemed his prior refusal to be addressed by his own status seemed to take his friend off guard, that polite smile quickly fixed mirrored his own.[break][break]

He held back a chuckle, returning the smile, and enjoying the menu when, as Julian responds to his comment over the king crab, he offers an appetizer. Some lobster bisque? Ah yes, when its cold in Galar, soup tastes fantastic. "That sounds quite wonderful, Julien," he traces a finger towards it, a little picture agreeing with his own imagination, before the waitress comes over.[break][break]

"Same for me, lass." the pleasant look on his face, dreamy a moment. When the waitress goes away, however...[break][break]

His smile shifts a little. One eye remains hidden. The other, opens and shows yellow, a gaze merely set to the vista outside, towards the sea. He observes everything he can without having to look Julien's way, but he always ensures one eye is visible to the Kalosian Ambassador.[break][break]

"While we await for our food... tell me of Kalos as of late, friend," he deeply inquires, warm in tone.

"It's what you might expect." Julien's reply was smooth and neutral. Though he kept a close eye on affairs back home, nothing new had arisen in the past year. Nothing worth sharing with a Galarian, at any rate. [break][break]

The waitress returned with their water and took their orders of soup before disappearing again. Julien picked up his glass and sipped thoughtfully before speaking again. [break][break]

"What about Galar? How is the reconstruction effort progressing?" he asked. Then, after a pause, he added, "I'm sure you know your cousins are here." [break][break]

The subtle comment implied that they—and Duncan—should be home helping to rebuild.

Same old same old. Duncan's happy to hear that. But it's when they get their waters and their order, that Duncan begins to drink and listens. The obvious questions, as he expects.[break][break]

"With the rise of the new Prime Minister after certain incidents, the wealth of Galar is being reformatted for its' restoration," Duncan begins, swirling the water as if it were the finest wine he could ever ask for, a clatter of ice chinking the side of the glass.[break][break]

Never once does he mention his stance.[break][break]

"The Queen is simply acting accordingly. She's sent me here to speak with Remiel Calcifet for restoration, as well as to wed me off to the woman known as Estelle Valentine. I stay at her home in Rustboro for now." Said so matter-of-factly, no hints, not even by his facial expression.[break][break]

His visible yellow eye peers at Julien.[break][break]

"Orders from the Queen are not to be taken so lightly, Julien. As I'm sure you know."[break][break]

Another sip. The water trickles down his parched throat.

Julien sipped his water, taking in the information and mentally noting it for future reference. Kalos had their eyes and ears in Galar, of course, so he had no imperative to report back about the Galarian queen's decisions. [break][break]

"Of course," he said mildly. Time to shift the topic. "I did not know you were engaged. Congratulations. When and where is the wedding taking place?" [break][break]

Judging by Duncan's delivery of the news, this Estelle Valentine woman was, at best, an acquaintance. Julien himself did not recognize her name. He waited to see how much information his companion was willing to divulge. [break][break]

The nature and quality of details shared would be an indicator of how much Duncan truly cared about his fiancée and their upcoming nuptials.

Always perceptive. An able mind like Julien's is dangerous, and one who is taking careful attention to his words should be handled with a little caution on his tongue. It ends with him beaming more.[break][break]

"Thank you, friend. An arranged marriage to a beautiful bonnie, good with a blade, loyal to the Queen. What's not to love?" He does well to hide his true feelings, behind a friendly, happy grin. Keep them all guessing.[break][break]

As for the date of the wedding, he smiles ear-to-ear. "Aye, you'll get an invitation, old friend. Perhaps even a groomsmen role. I'd hate to not see you in a suit, so you're coming regardless," his accented tone gets a little higher in an airy little flirt, meaning nothing really, but a friendly jest all the same.

Julien's smile grew tight. As amicable as Duncan was, the two men were barely more than acquaintances. Julien knew right away that he would never actually be a groomsman, nor did he want such an honor. [break][break]

"I appreciate the thought, Your Grace," he replied, putting social distance between them, "but I must decline the offer to be part of your wedding party. I believe I would serve you best as a regular guest." [break][break]

His thoughts turned to Duncan's future bride. The duke's description of her suggested that Estelle was employed as a member of the royal guard, but he failed to mention an affiliation with any family. Julien arrived at the most logical conclusion as a result. [break][break]

"Your fiancée is a commoner, then?" he probed, sipping more water. [break][break]

Not that such a relationship was inconceivable. Plenty of noble children married for love, and married commoners, too. But if that was the case, why had Duncan's marriage to Estelle been arranged?

Hm. Did he strike a nerve? Duncan wanted no such thing, but the way he tightens up, Duncan's grin returns to a smile, and to his declining the offer, Duncan nods, raising his glass again. "I assure you, as we're blethering on here, that choice is out of my hands. Do not fret, Julien." Glass on his feet, every word must be danced around with for the least amount of pain later.[break][break]

The question about Estelle's heritage does a somersault. For the first time, Duncan's smile disappears entirely, a flash of nigh-offense. The smile returns by the mere sipping of water, as he sets the glass back down.[break][break]

"She is a self-made woman. She rose through knighthood at a young age, talented in swordsmanship, more so than I, and joined the Royal Guard. Estelle is known as the Queen's Hound. I've seen her duels before. Graceful. Like a wild flower on the fields, standing out amongst the crowd." He recalls something in his mind, the times they shared a duel, in a dance of blades. An icy bloom, always keeping others at arm's length. A familiar approach.[break][break]

His golden eye moves back up towards Julien. This man truly was dangerous. That's what made it fun to talk with him. "Are you looking to wed soon yourself, Julien?"

Julien caught the flash of Duncan's eyes, a split-second of wrath darkening the duke's face before it vanished behind another smile. [break][break]

Ah, thought Julien. So the young duke at least admires his fiancée, even if he doesn't love her. Judging by the way Duncan rattled off Estelle's accomplishments and endearing qualities, it was only a matter of time before he actually fell in love with the woman. [break][break]

He did not respond at first, instead thanking the waitress for bringing their lobster bisques. Julien spread his napkin over his lap and scooped a small spoonful of soup. [break][break]

"You shall have to introduce me to Miss Valentine. I'm eager to see the quality of her for myself, if she has captivated you so thoroughly," he suggested, the corner of his mouth curling his smile into a smirk. [break][break]

Then he raised the spoon to his lips and blew gently to cool the soup before tasting it. The consistency was thick and warm, the flavor rich. An excellent appetizer, all told. [break][break]

Duncan's question about Julien's own personal life prompted a raised eyebrow. "I suppose I should," the Kalosian admitted, "but I'm not interested in the dullness of domesticity. No woman has proven herself interesting enough to spend that kind of time with." [break][break]

For some strange reason, he thought of Mei Liu, seated across from him in identical armchairs as snow fell outside their hotel window. He dismissed the memory at once. She was an escort and nothing more.

Lobster arrives, and though the soup looks particularly good, he mirrors Julien in placing the napkin underneath, upon his lap, before taking a small bite, blowing upon the spoonful of soup, when Julien suggests a meeting. For a moment, he pauses, spoon by his lips. Then, Duncan takes his first bite. Thick. Warm. Hoenn truly surprises him. Delicacies of seafood were to be enjoyed![break][break]

The way Julien smirks has Duncan, momentarily, on the backfoot, but he recovers within seconds. "I'll invite you over for dinner. Her servants will surely cook at the future husband's behest, especially for an old friend." Though his eye never once meets his gaze, merely at his smirk, he turns back to the lobster bisque, another bite now in his mouth.[break][break]

Now that Duncan had finished squirming, it was time to prod at his own friend's fortunes..[break][break]

"You look far too narrowly, Julien! Meeting them on their level, sure, any flower would fawn to be plucked by Monsieur Demassieux. But if they meet you on your own? Lithe with tongue, more ways than one? That's the kind of woman best suited for you, aye?" His golden eye finally rests on his friend's again, the glass of water back to his lips.[break][break]

"Domesticity doesn't suit you, my friend."[break][break]

It never did.

Duncan's suggestion of dinner was more than acceptable, so Julien inclined his head graciously. The visit would not only allow him to meet this unknown woman and judge her for himself, but improve his relationship with the young duke. [break][break]

"A woman at my level is a rare specimen," Julien said as they ate their soups. "Very rarely did I meet one at that caliber back in Kalos. Perhaps it is different here in Hoenn, but I doubt it." [break][break]

The region didn't even have an aristrocracy. [break][break]

Time to pivot the conversation again. Julien had enough of discussion about his personal life and preferences. [break][break]

"I imagine you'll have an enjoyable time here, though. There's quite a lot to see and do in terms of entertainment. I can't imagine you'd spend all day and night in the company of your family and fiancée."

Always fun to discuss such matters with Julien. He doesn't get flustered, and he bats it away, and yet pays it enough mind to respond. He at least puts some stock into that part of the conversation. Enjoyable, without being overbeared by it. How to live like his Kalosian friend![break][break]

Conversation pivoting away again, Julien would remark about the personal life choices. Duncan doesn't stop his signature smile.[break][break]

"Interesting and enjoyable so far, yes. The entertainment is quite nice," he mulls over his time at the museum meeting Yuina Higashi, or his time helping Elise Calcifet with a dragon problem. He leans back. "-in truth, I like getting out and around. Seeing the sights. Meeting the locals. Reconvening with the family"[break][break]

The soup was getting closer and closer to finished. "My friend," he says, beginning to propose quite the question. "-shall I invite you for dinner one night soon? I'll put it in my agenda for us!"

Duncan's answer was shallow and superficial, which only implied to Julien that the duke was there for other, more confidential business outside of his engagement and public discussions with his cousin. Julien was certain of it. [break][break]

"Whenever you like," the Kalosian said with a polite smile. "I am at your disposal." [break][break]

Which was not at all true, but royalty liked to believe it was. [break][break]

Their conversation continued to other small talk—economics, politics, and their respective pastimes. The waitress brought their entrées: steamed Kingler legs and claws with hot butter and fresh lemon wedges. Julien had not expected it to taste good, considering the establishment. However, the taste was excellent, even if the presentation was lacking. [break][break]

Of course, when the meal was over, the Kalosian Embassy paid for everything. [break][break]

"It was good to see you again, Your Grace," Julien said to Duncan as they prepared to depart. "I look forward to dinner with you and your fiancée. Please give my regards to Miss Valentine." [break][break]
