Porter liked to think he was pretty okay at a number of things: he’d been a barista for a while, so he could make a mean latte; he’d had a green thumb since birth; and he was very good at swimming.

But if he was filling out, say, a resume, and there was a slot for dragon training: years of experience, he’d have to put a big, fat zero.

Ermenesande was willful, but he’d had her since she was an egg, and ‘tiri was still a baby.

T’neri was a full grown adult, with the scars to prove it, like rings in a cut-down tree. She was stubborn and, at times, vicious, and Porter was nursing a series of burns and bite marks, some from T’neri herself, and some from wild Pokemon she had decided not to intervene with on Porter’s behalf.

Luckily, the League had the perfect resource for learning how to deal with dragons.

“Once she was healed up, I tried to let her go,” Porter explains to freya morningstar , after a brief summary of his and T’neri’s relationship thus far. “I’d hate for her to feel… domesticated. But she wouldn’t leave.”

the dragon's own wounds, the worst of them, are reminiscent of lyune's. though this ranger has done a hell of a job patching her up, freya can see the twinging muscles on her shoulders, the intermittent flexing of claws when she shifts. she won't let any of her team close. she's still wild.

"you saved her life," she says, still watching the beast. "salamence value loyalty, even the wild ones."

they're in a secluded part of the draciary. other dragons that might have set her off are kept away. even lyune keeps his distance some yards off, large head on his paws and eyes trained on his mistress and the newcomers.

freya's lips twitch. "don't you worry about her feeling domesticated. she's not going to turn into a mewling kitten. porter, was it? are you ready to tame her?"

Freya had known what she was about do a degree that even Porter found astonishing. Not that he’d doubted it, of course, but he hadn’t expected her to take a single look at the situation and go about arranging and ordering things. It filled him with hope.

The sounds of other dragons calling in the near distance, like birdsong, almost distracted him. He rubbed a hand at the back of his head, frowning.

“I… I don’t know,” he said, honestly, then flushed. “I mean, yes. Porter. Is my name. But, um. I don’t--,” he gestured at T’neri with both hands, “taming sounds so… like… brutal? I would just really like for her not to try and eat me.”

T’neri lashes her tail, perhaps insulted at the thought of putting such junk food in her mouth.

"that's because it is," she says bluntly, but there's a hint of amusement in her gaze.

she doesn't dare take another step closer to t'neri, but she does move in a wide circle around her. no doubt she's been pent up since the injury. the easiest way to treat her would be after expending most of her energy, but freya doesn't want to risk more damage until she's taken a good look at her wing and ensured it's healed properly.

the dragon lowers her head and hisses lowly. lyune hisses back, but freya waves a hand towards him.

"she's itching for a fight," freya says and then tilts her chin towards her. "you have another pokemon on you?"

a pokemon he can depend on. better that than one of her dragons.

Porter does his best not to quail in the face of Freya’s frank approach to dealing with his inexperience. He does step back as she begins to move, watching closely, but feeling like he can breathe again, if only slightly, one she’d left his personal space.

T’neri turns, tail lashing, head lowered. Porter thinks, at first, Freya’s going to wrestle her bare-handed-- bring out some Kung Fu Panda like skadoosh that would turn the dragon to mewling pulp in her fingers-- but then she asks if he has another Pokemon and he startles and begins slapping at his pockets even though he knows where his Pokeballs are.

“Oh, yes. Um. Hold on.” He finally finds Ermenesande’s ball and releases the Empoleon, who, after a brief scan of the situation, locks her gaze in on T’neri, because she’s had to step in when the dragon’s become to rough-- or been too distant-- before.

“Are you going to want them to battle?” he asks, feeling a little stupid-- you’re not stupid, you’re just out of your depth-- as he does so.

Ermenesande’s head tilts at a sharp angle, low, warbling trill suggesting she might like that idea, a lot.

she doesn't yet know if he has it in him to tame dragons. he's timid and easily flustered. not good signs to start off with, but not impossible. people like Gwendolyn Conway have flourished here, working among the dragons. still, maybe she's better off starting him with a goomy than the cross salamence and its anxious hissing.

when the empoleon emerges, freya is satisfied and nods to him before stepping away to join lyune's side. his presence will keep the smaller female in check.

"you can't hold back," she says. "salamence - they're ruthless. she won't respect you until you beat her. really beat her."

He really tries his best not to show it but his face contorts in an expression of absolute horror almost without his permission. He covers his mouth and then slides his hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose. “Oh my god. Okay.”

Porter’s whole creed is do no harm. His entire life has been dedicated to, essentially, the scientific study of doing no harm. The thought of physical violence makes his stomach turn.

Which isn’t to say he’s not seen blood. He’s watched the ruthlessness of nature up close and personal many times. Braviary killing their newly hatched young; Arbok cannibalizing smaller members of their own species; male Pyroar killing unrelated cubs to bring a female back into estrus; a Tinkaton smashing in a Corviknight’s skull.

But it’s different, when it comes from a place of humanity. There’s a power imbalance there. He specializes in rectifying ways humanity has harmed nature. Fixing it, running it back. In all those other situations, he was just a bystander, taking notes, watching from a distance, learning and gathering experience to further his own cause.

He wants to close his eyes and shut out the stimuli and think. Think this through, examine what makes him so reticent about (attempting) to beat T’neri into the ground, consider how unsteady it makes him feel, and analyze the repercussions of it.

But, fortunately for him, as it usually does, nature moves faster than he can think.
[break] [break]
Ermenesande has no qualms about beating the shit out of this interloping dragon. From empty air she summons founts of water, cloaking herself in it and shooting forward, golden pronged head couched for the charge.

T’neri drops her head and roars. The Empoleon’s aqua jet brings her to within striking distance, placing her just off-center of the Salamence’s head, which she reaches for with metal claw, aiming to pin the oversized lizard down.
[break] [break]
Porter swallows. Ermenesande has always been willful, even as a Piplup, but she’s never inherently been bloodthirsty. He trusts her with his life, and so, with a slow, measured exhale, he lowers his shoulders, relaxing the tiniest bit.
[break] [break]
Maybe this is what nature, such as it is in this interaction, needs. Maybe Ermenesande knows, better than he does.

Actually, that wouldn’t surprise him at all.

“Are they all like this?” he wonders, his mind turning the problem around in his head, seeking the questions. Curiosity calms him, a little.
