Stuffing half of a protein bar into his mouth, Caleb hurried over to the location of his next match. He chewed, swallowed, then turned his attention to the man standing across from him. He could really use a coffee right about now, but it would have to wait.[break][break]
"Hey," he greeted his opponent. The guy seemed young - maybe college-aged? Caleb felt old all of a sudden.[break][break]
The Ranger released Lyra, and the Lapras eyed him expectantly. He might be growing weary, but she seemed as energetic as ever, eager to face her next challenger. Caleb couldn't help but smile at that. He'd known her his entire life, and she'd always been there to bolster him in pretty much any circumstance.[break][break]
"My name's Caleb Harcourt," he told the blue-haired young man. "Elite Ranger out of Slateport." He paused, then smiled somewhat sheepishly. "Hoping this will be a quick one. I could really use a nap."

Here was another new face that would be added to his memory. The name Caleb wasn't at all familiar to Noel, however such was the case with many of the challengers he had met through this tournament. It was a great way to meet new faces, and maybe even future friends. Watching as his opponent finished off a protein bar, he would notice how a few crumbs had stained his cheeks. They sure were in a hurry, but if possible, Noel would want to make this a long and exciting match.[break][break]

Returning the smile to the ranger, he waves a hand in greeting, his Shaymin popping out from behind him and running into position, carrying the same happy expression it normally has. Standing idly by as it gazes up to have its eyes meet against the Lapras it would be facing, it wondered if this maybe was a bit too large of an undertaking.[break][break]

"I'm Noel Parker. Just your normal every day trainer, or at least that's what I like to think I am. You know, a lot of people have been telling me they're pretty tired even though they sign up for matches. Not me though, I'm raring to go."[break][break]

As if to signal the start of the match, he presses on his Tera orb accessory and lets it work its magic. A swirl of energy flowing out from inside it and enveloping his Shaymin, changing it to its Grass Tera. With its new boost in power, its smile turns devilish, now awaiting their foe to make the first move and to properly begin the match.

"Oh to be young again," Caleb laughed. Not that being in one's thirties was old, per se. But "raring to go" wasn't exactly in his lexicon.[break][break]
All the same, Noel seemed like a nice enough guy. Worthy of his best effort. So Caleb straightened, suppressed a yawned, and rolled his shoulders back. The familiar shimmer of Tera energy encased the Shaymin across from Lyra, and Caleb smiled, amused. Grass was the logical choice, but the world didn't exactly make much sense anymore. One had to be prepared for the illogical these days.[break][break]
So Caleb activated his own Tera Orb, and Lyra began to glow a fiery orange. Carnelian glittered, growing along her shell like sparkling barnacles. When she opened her maw, it wasn't water or ice that emerged, but fire - the TERA BLAST rocketing towards the Shaymin.[break][break]

The sudden change in Lapras' type was a cause for concern. Where once they had the advantage now they were already put up against the wall. A fiery inferno is sent out towards Noel's Shaymin and one hit from it would spell doom. They would have to plan accordingly if they wanted to take this foe down.[break][break]

Taking a leap up into the air, the heated blast slightly singes the hedgehog, it could feel the burn just from a light touch. Escaping slightly unharmed, it would now go on the attack, firing off an Energy Ball towards their opponent. While not the most effective means, it would give them enough time to distract them in order to come up with a better plan.[break][break]

"Hmph, looks like you were prepared for this. Turns out I'm the one in danger now. But that just makes the match even more interesting, we'll find a way out of this!"[break][break]

The intriguing turnaround only pumps him up more. A smile flashes across his face as the battle heated up to a rousing start. When put into a corner is when he shined the greatest, there was only going up from here. Perhaps he was enjoying this a little too much, anyone could see that he was a battle-crazed maniac.

The Shaymin was quick.[break][break]
Energy slammed into Lyra, and she bristled defensively, turning away so that her great shell could better protect the rest of her body. The fiery beam missed, much to her chagrin. She narrowed her eyes, the only sign that she was truly frustrated.[break][break]
Noel launched into a heroic-sounding speech and Caleb rolled his eyes. So he was one of those types, all try-hard-do-your-best and then some. At least he could back it up with some actual battling prowess. Caleb sighed, rolled his shoulders. Time to step it up a notch, he supposed.[break][break]
"Come on, girl," he encouraged Lyra. She nodded, then attempted to hit the Shaymin once more with her FIRE TERA BLAST.[break][break]

Noel could tell that Caleb didn't believe him. All the more reason for him to take this battle even more seriously and prove his skill. He won't be so dismissive once he's put up against the wall. However the second round of fire projectiles was to be unexpected. With his Shaymin still in the air, there was no escaping or moving out of the way. Forced to take the flaming meteoric strike, its knocked back into the air and sent crashing down. Landing squarely on the floor, it rises back up to its feet in a slight daze, shaking itself away and preparing for its counterattack.[break][break]

Noel looks to his companion and they both meet each other's gazes, nodding to each other as if they both understood what was to happen next.[break][break]

"Nice shot there, and your Lapras is a lot more bulky than I realized. We've got something just for the likes of it though. A full out attack!"[break][break]

With the boost of its Tera power, the hedgehog begins to gather up the grass energy around itself, radiating an intense glow that soon faded away, absorbing into itself. Once ready, it would yell out a battle cry and fire off an amazing Solar Beam headed towards their opponent. Even if they used the same tactic, some damage would surely be dealt.

Bulky? Well, Caleb supposed Lyra was large, even for a Lapras.[break][break]
As the beam charged, Lyra readied herself. Flames circled her, shield-like, the crystals covering her body glittering in the mid-day sun. She could work with this. The solar energy could be absorbed, transformed, molded into a counterattack. All around her, water surged, a boiling hot HYDRO PUMP meant to engulf the Shaymin's attack and send it back in a devastating tidal wave.[break][break]
"You should consider joining the Rangers," Caleb called out to Noel. The kid had a lot of spirit, that was for sure. The region could use every willing fighter, what with some new disaster always looming on the horizon.[break][break]

It wasn't the first time the topic had been brought up to him, nor was it the first time the thought came across his mind. While he would love nothing more than to join alongside his fellow companions all in the name of helping others, something about it made him unsure. Maybe it was the idea of being bogged down by an organization that made him so hesitant. But if it meant making the world a better place, then why shouldn't he join? Such questions would have to be asked at a later time, for now there was a match to see through.[break][break]

"Is this your attempt at distracting us? Such tricks may have worked on me in the past... but not anymore. I suggest you put your full focus into this match or else you'll face the consequences."[break][break]

The torrent of water was strong enough to completely dissipate the Shaymin's attack. Now the blast had completely pushed through and landed itself squarely against the hedgehog, causing it to be blasted away against a metal streetlamp. The knockback was so strong that it bent the steel. Noel's Pokemon lands onto the floor, dazed from the sheer force of the attack but shaking itself back into full speed not long after. Sending an Earth Power travelling through the floor, it would appear beneath the Lapras, the ground beneath it caving in to reappear as giant pillars of rock that would smash themselves against the aquatic creature unless they found a way out.

Distraction? Tricks? What the hell - ?[break][break]
Caleb blinked, genuinely confused. Meanwhile, Lyra tried to avoid getting impaled by the Shaymin's giant pillars of earth as they shot towards the sky. Summoning another torrent of water, the Lapras attempted to lift herself off the ground and away from the crumbling rock. Mud coalesced around both Pokemon, threatening to hold them both in place. Knowing the nimble Shaymin would likely escape before she would be able to, Lyra quickly shot an ICE BEAM at it to further trap the smaller creature.[break][break]
"If it's my full focus you want, you've got it," Caleb assured Noel, half-amused half-exasperated. "Trust me, I don't have time for ulterior motives. Just looking to train, that's all."[break][break]

The dirty water was beginning to form around the Shaymin's feet. If they stood in it any longer, it would compromise their movement should it need to dodge in any sort of fashion. With quick thinking, it notices a street lamp within range that it could hop to. With this goal set,the hedgehog leaps upwards towards its new perch. Yet this all seemed to be calculated by Caleb's Pokemon. A frozen projectiles is shot at Noel's partner, hitting it directly and causing it to fall to the ground, completely frozen as a side effect. Encased in ice, it plummets downward onto the mud, the texture breaking its fall which didn't allow the prison to crack.[break][break]

Noel watches on anxiously, things were not turning out well for him any longer and soon the curtain would fall. There was but one last shot for him and his Shaymin to pull things through.[break][break]

"Come on Shaymin! Show them what you're made of! It's not over yet!"[break][break]

As if responding to its trainer's wishes a blinding light emanates from the enclosed Shaymin. Suddenly, it breaks free and grass energy is taking from its surrounding area. A Seed Flare is shot out in all directions, hoping to land at least one good shot against the Lapras.

Seeds flew and Lyra ducked. She couldn't avoid all of them, however: the Shaymin's well-timed barrage was simply too intense. Caleb had to admit, Noel and his Shaymin had a pretty undeniable bond. If Noel was really the type of trainer to care so deeply about his Pokemon, to put the time in to grow so close, then he really would make a good Ranger.[break][break]
But Caleb knew you couldn't force such a big life decision onto someone. Perhaps in time Noel would figure out his path. For now, though, Caleb really just wanted to beat him.[break][break]
"Last push!" He called out to Lyra. Recovering, she charged her energy, then fired a final FIRE TERA BLAST at the Shaymin. Might as well use the one move she had that was truly the right type advantage...[break][break]

Now Caleb was really getting into it. Noel smirked to himself seeing his opponent get more heated up in this battle. It was rare to see people get so involved in fights just like he did. Maybe he and Caleb could get along after all. He'd have to remember to speak with him afterwards about possibly becoming a ranger and all that it entails.[break][break]

But now was the time for the finale. Still recovering from its last attack, the Shaymin is left exposed to the fire blast coming its way. With no way of dodging or deflecting the attack, it would try and knock the Lapras out before it would take any more damage. Sending one final Earth Power out coursing into the ground, it once more seeks out the ice-type. This time jagged spear-like rock spew out from underneath while traveling across, aiming to deal the final blow.[break][break]

"This is it Shaymin! Hang in there just a little longer!"[break][break]

Often times, people talked a big game and couldn't back it up. Unfortunately for Caleb, Noel was not actually that sort of person.[break][break]
All of his positivity, all of his enthusiasm, all of his confidence, and all of his passion for battling was, in the end, sincere. And because it was sincere, the Shaymin's next onslaught of earthy spikes had just enough power to topple the Terastallized Lapras, slamming her into the ground with a decisive finality.[break][break]
Caleb sighed, returned Lyra to her Pokeball, then approached the infuriatingly upbeat Noel and held out his hand.[break][break]
"Nice job," he relented. "You're pretty good."[break][break]
He paused, regarding the blue-haired young man. Then, despite his annoyance, he smiled.[break][break]
"I meant what I said earlier. If you have any interest in the Rangers, hit me up."
